Checked into this hotel on 6-19-26 for one night for the royal oak gone country bar crawl, not usually a motel person, but the photos online showed a nice renovated place to go and the courtyard with the bar sparked me and my boyfriends interest, and also we got a discount on a room with our bar crawl tickets. Upon arrival to the room I was quickly proven wrong, it seems our room was not cleaned before us. There was a random pill on the chair (not sure how you miss a light blue pill on a black chair) that really made me uncomfortable. Next I opened one of the drawers and there was a pair of socks, a tank top, a bandana and a magazine, very disturbing. But wait there was also blonde hair all over the bench, I felt really grossed out by this experience so we went down to the front desk and asked for a refund and went to the Hyatt house on Woodward. read more

It was fine. We paid $200 for a double for one night which was a bit steep but it was near the concert venue. It truly is a hotel which had been remodeled with the drive up feature. The rooms are ok, they will not feel luxurious. They are going to feel like an old motel that was run down and they put on a new coat of paint and a new window AC unit. The bed was ok comfort wise. For breakfast they set out coffee, bagels and danishes in the main office. We went elsewhere as this wasn't really going to be enough for what we wanted. I dislike that they make you download a key card app to use to open your door. It was very slow and took several seconds each time. The day of checkout it decided to stop working and they revealed they had key cards they can also give you (which I would have preferred as my friend was unable to put the key app on her phone). Maybe they should offer the room key and if you fail to return it then charge a fee, if it's such a cost issue. Something else that didn't sit right with me was after we checked out via the room key app, they left us the availability to leave an optional tip for housekeeping. We've already paid $200 to stay in a glorified motel, pay your staff enough that you aren't asking for more money. At lease the surrounding area is nice and walkable. I wouldn't mind staying here again if I had to, for a much better price. But if I ever come back to the area I will probably check somewhere else out instead like a more traditional hotel with better amenities. read more

This motel used to be an eyesore here on 11Mile. It looks much better since the current owners took it over. The lobby looks updated and although it's small, it's cozy and inviting. The building and lot looks better and all of the doors are covered in this faux wood panel. They have plastic lawn chairs for guests. There was one food truck offering at the event. We thought about trying out a walking taco. The parking lot regularly features small concerts. We went with my parents to spend some time with them, along with a few of their friends. There was some bad called Reefer playing and it was free for guests of the hotel and to the public. The motel is very active and seems engaged in the downtown activities and does some good for the city for sure. The entire main parking lot was set up for the conference. I think it's a cool thing what the motel does for locals as well as guests. read more

We stayed here from last Wed thru Sunday. We had mixed feelings about the place. First of all, we did not realize it is really more of a motel with access to all the rooms only from the parking lot. Our biggest frustration though was that our room had a lot of tiny ants everywhere including by the sink area and some in our bed, which was surprising because it was really cold outside and snowy. The room was dated and the carpet really needed cleaning. Our sink drain pipe was leaking but I tightened that and the bathroom (barn door style) would not shut the whole way and luckily I had access to some allen wrenches and adjusted that. The hotel small lobby was clean and they did offer coffee and bagels and small pastries. All in all we were not elated with the place and only chose it because it was pet-friendly and not real expensive. read more

This previous seedy motel is now a cute trendy boutique motel. Upon arrival I was instantly drawn to the abstract wall mural. The center of the parking lot is a fun activity area including picnic tables, lawn chairs, hammocks, fire pit, and lawn games. It's a great place to read, play corn hole, or picnic. The receptionist was very helpful at checkin and recommended things to do in the area. Our first room was smokey, so they upgraded us to a room with a kitchen. I loved the quirky motif. What an awesome place to stayl! This hotel has been carefully renovated from a cookie cutter, standard "Days Inn" to a kitchy, quaint, welcoming little oasis. Our son is here for the summer, and unfortunately Royal Oak was hit with a massive heat wave and he was stuck without air conditioning. When we explained our situation the staff was more than accommodating, making allowances during our stay. There's free coffee in the lobby, a discount at a neighboring diner, and a nice area with cornhole and games and a fire pit. All in all a great experience in a great little town. Things to know- the campus is smoke free, there is no pool, and they are renovating next year to include a bar and grill. read more

Hotel staff I give 5 star. The property= 0 star. They charged me $170 on a Monday night in the winter. The rooms are super beat up, old beds/linens/carpet. They are trying to be boutique chic but it's not working. Bathrooms have original tile and in bad shape. This property as is should be no more than a 2 star hotel. And should be priced in $75 range. The good- Open Key is convenient, beds were fine, it was mostly clean, shower was hot, like the microwave and fridge. It was nice getting free coffee and some discounted food at the diner. It's diner food- but it's fine. Other not so great things- upgrades are badly needed. Outlets are not in convenient locations, bathroom is incredibly small. I shared a room with a girl I didn't know (bachelorette party) and although the room was under my name and I didn't indicate I was expecting a guest they just handed her keys without IDing her or checking with me. It's fine- she's a lovely person- but that was troubling that keys were blindly given out. My cards were deactivated- which is not the fault of the hotel. However the server for Open Key was down so we had to call someone to come help at 2am because no one was in the office after hours. Also someone in my party (not in my room) wanted a vape and without my authorization or consent the manager gave it to her and charged my room. I had no idea this took place. I did not receive a receipt and asked for an itemized one for the room and charges- luckily then the charge was taken off... HOWEVER- they double charged me for my room. No apology and was told "we weren't even supposed to take off the $20 charge and did that for you." Ok? In the process you charged me an extra $275 that I have to wait around to find out if it's actually going to be refunded! I also was confused by the $100 holding fee.. awful steep. I just don't think the price of this place matches what you receive. read more

My uncle once said "There are mess ups and there are f***ups".... And this hotel f***ed up big time! Long story short, they double booked our room and since there are no dead bolts (only an electric one that opens with a working key) the men started coming inside! Before I start my explanation, let me start with the good: -This hotel was a nice attempt to convert a motel into something more modern. The room still felt like a motel but the newer furniture was a nice touch -Staying at the hotel gives several perks at restaurants nearby like discounted meals. Ask the front desk for details -There are daily and nightly events like live bands and car shows. There are also yard games! -Walking distance from local bars and restaurants The Bad: -Toilet ring in toilet on entry -No full length mirror and the only mirror is in the bathroom (not ideal with 3 girls getting ready for a special event) -Lighting is not the best (especially for makeup) The f***up: We were a room of 3 girls, had just checked in and were sitting on the bed talking about "the new" sex trafficking operation where they give key cards to men to rooms with girls in them, so you can only imagine our surprise and fright when the door opens and 2 big men are on the other side. We all ran to the door, held it closed and asked what they wanted but the men weren't responding and kept trying to come in. After they kept trying to come in and THEM shouting this is our room, one finally left and said "be right back". One of us rushed to the phone and called the lobby. The guy at the desk said he accidentally assigned the key card to our room and told them a different room number... that didn't make sense because why would they even try to come in our room?!? For our scare, he apologized and offered to give us a hot dog. We didn't feel the hotel was taking the situation seriously enough because now we were scared for our safety at night knowing that anyone with a working card could come into the room. We also didn't have options for other hotels since it was Marathon and Sweetest Day Weekend. We decided to go down to the front desk to reexplain the seriousness of our experience. I admit to being just slightly conflicted about writing this review for a few reasons. This old roadside motel is cute from outside, the vibe very colorful and charming from the street. The phone and text staff were professional and accommodating at every step. I was happy to have "contact-free check in" with an easy to use downloadable ap and room key on my phone. I was looking forward to my stay for a family event close by. That is all. The marketing promise is "trendy", "retro", which is arguable,, but the claim Is also "gorgeous, modern", which is absolutely false. The photo online is laughable. And the complaints in 4 year old reviews that managers claim will be rectified immediately? Still the same. I would like to believe that you cannot say you are a hip chic re do unless you actually accomplish a hip chic redo. This is still a pretty gross roadside hotel and the only updating is the contactless keyless entry via text and the very high rate. So, arrival. Then it all went hugely sideways. The room was very small, not a problem. But oh my god. Unhealthy, my husband describes it, "I couldn't shower there or even take my socks off." Luke warm water at best. We never had any hot water at arrival or the next day. See my photos if you can stand it. Filth behind toilet and shower curtain. Cracked tiles, gross grout, mold. The smell of mold. Filthy windows full of bugs and spider webs. Disgusting bathroom with no place to set toiletries, threshold loose. One bedside table. No clock. No radio. Tiny TV. No fridge or microwave. I mean, this isn't a "vibe", Hotel Royal Oak is, sadly, a dump. I mean puleeeeze. Terrible towels, horrible pillow, lumpy bed. Past guests dirty socks in empty cupboard where an old refrigerator or mini bar used to be. What in the world is this???Batteries gone from remotes. Incredibly loud heating/cooling unit. Rusted obsolete non functioning hot water baseboard heat laying on floor and on wall. Furniture plastic and very cheap. Worst coffee I've ever tasted in my life from a machine in the lobby, one sip and spit. (Great tip: Head over to locally owned Atomic Coffee at Main and 4th for a Lavender Latte and a blueberry cream cheese croissant which was more like a fat pie.) Here's the saddest part: I considered not writing a review. But the hotel texted and asked my opinion so I sent the photos from my room. The staff member texted back that I should have asked to change rooms and gotten an upgrade. I said the room should not have been so filthy, and I was on my way to an event. Why would I expect another room to be better? I got another response, including that "other guests appreciate the vibe", again like it was my fault. Yes, I appreciated the refund and I acknowledge it here, but it does not buy off the fact that this hotel is selling $200.00+ per night rooms that are falsely advertised as modern and clean. Why did they put me in such an obscenely filthy room? I was supposed to "appreciate the vibe"??? Gaslight much? I cannot explain the many rave reviews here except to say that perhaps people are now accepting such grossly inferior accommodation for such inflated prices. Or maybe there really are renovated sections of this hotel where there is hot water and someone cleans the rooms? I leave this review in hopes that the hotel will clean itself up, deliver on the promise of modern and clean, stop blaming the customer, and I thank them for the refund for this horrible experience. My company booked me to this hotel and I was very excited since I used to live nearby and passed by a few times and loved the look of the outside. Check-In with text was a breeze but as soon as I opened the door I was shocked at the state of the room. No hotel matches it's photos but this was a unclean tiny dim lit room with a bed that would better be described as a cot. The stains on the headboard seemed to be dirty handprints and the bathroom had stains in the tub and floor to the point I decided to shower at my nearby local gym. I went immediately to the front desk to see if they had another room since I thought my company booked a bigger bed and it was supposed to have a fridge and microwave not just the wires where they were. The front desk person was asleep at the desk at 6pm so I said "hello" and he didn't stir. I went back to my room and texted the help line and my phone immediately rang. The front desk person was rude and insisted I was never in the lobby, I laughed him off and ate dinner accepting that I needed to find another hotel. He then called back again and said I was only in the lobby for a few seconds and that my reservations were not for the larger bed, continuing to reaffirm that I wasn't in the lobby long enough for him to wake up. I spent one night there where due to a mirror but the door and cheap blinds I watched the other guests smoke and talk outside and got no sleep. In the morning I texted and asked them to cancel the rest of my stay, they told me to contact the booking group. Booking.com was very apologetic and thought my request was reasonable considering the stay, hotel Royal oak declined my request and blamed it on the booking group. So I was charged $300 for a one night stay in a dingy hotel and the person via text was not apologetic again blaming me for not waking the front desk person when I came in the lobby. It's really disappointing to see them using the clout of a fun neighborhood to take advantage of people. Like many others I wish I could give them a 0 but a 1 is the the lowest rating! read more

My wife and I stayed here just one night for her 30th birthday. Very close to downtown, we walked from the Hotel to all the local bars and restaurants. It was less than a half mile. Rooms are great for what it is, they did a good job with renovating this old building. Great choices on furniture and fixtures in the room. Very reasonable for us, it was under $200 for the one night, granted we had one of the smaller rooms but definitely worth it for the location and the good vibes that this place has. The center courtyard is the best part, we hung out here for 4 hours on a Saturday night. The owner has live entertainment every Saturday night and a Cars and Coffee every Sunday at 11am. We met one of the owners and his circle of friends and they are great people. Offered us drinks and bought pizza for everyone sitting with us, a group of about 10-12 people. It was a surprise ending to a great day we had in Royal Oak after shopping, drinking at about 8 different bars and eating lunch and dinner at some local restaurants. Overall great experience, would definitely return! Next time we will definitely stay more than one night!!! read more

When checking in, the guy at the front desk helping us "knew" we would not want a bluetooth entry (I guess because we looked old), so gave us a key card. Then he told us he put us in a room on the back side of the hotel because they have live music and it might be loud for us. He then told us the WiFi code THREE times and wrote it down and then highlighted it! Like we were 90 years old. The room we were assigned was in a back corner. The 2 lamps on the bedside stands flickered like strobes and the floor lamp had no light bulb in it. We went back to the desk and were assigned another room. They did not make us feel welcome. My experience there was, unfortunately, not good. I love that they promote local musicians and wanted to support that effort. So we got a deluxe room and were told that we'd have a room on the courtyard. We didn't and I was unhappy with that and spiritedly let them know. DO NOT BE FOOLED into thinking this is some hip and upscale hotel. This is a cheaply converted motel. There are a few pieces of modern furniture, carpeting and sinks thrown into painted and fixed rooms that are still old, cruddy and dirty. The motel looks like a ma & pop DIY (do-it-yourself) project rather than the upscale hotel they are claiming to be. This would be okay if they were charging ma & pop prices. They are charging Marriott or Sheraton prices when they should be charging Motel 6 prices. There is no elevator so you will have to struggle to get your luggage up the dangerous cement stairs with unsafe railings. The walk from the room to the office was down a dark and creepy looking corridor that looked unsafe. It is not in the best part of Royal Oak, but I did see a police car cruising by. I was not sure if my car was safe in the parking lot. The late night staff member was a tall Black guy with a very bad attitude! Maybe he could have provided better customer service if he was not busy talking on his cell phone. I am sure there are code violations that the City of Royal Oak could find if they inspected this place. The whole time I was at this place, I kept envisioning the Bates Motel. LOVE the kitschy vibe of this hotel. I did have an issue but EMILY WAS ALL OVER IT AND FANTASTIC. I fully admit that I'm a hotel snob and this hotel is just perfect for a stay for work or for sure coming into town just to enjoy the local atmosphere. Holly was also OUTSTANDING. They have to be the best in customer service, in my hotel experience. (Which is a lot) if you're hesitant to book, don't be. You won't be disappointed. In a nutshell, this is clearly a Super 8 Motel that was renovated and sold as a Ritz Carlton, but as we found in our stay the bones are still a Super 8 Motel. We drove up and our first instinct was that we missed the hotel. The photos of the outside don't quite capture the energy, BUT once you walk into the lobby it's quiet funky and fresh. The lobby attendant, Amy, was LOVELY. She was welcoming in a way that made me feel like she worked at this hotel when it was a motel, talking about how busy it was and how she popped 4 fingernails that morning. We liked Amy as our welcoming committee. She gave us vouchers to the free breakfast at the next door cafe (which you have to pick up daily). Onto the nitty gritty....where this hotel missed the mark: 1) Starting small -- No mini fridge. Not much to say here. I just appreciate a mini fridge and microwave for leftovers or in room food options. Especially with no room service. Bloop. 2) The Wi-Fi didn't work in my room or my neighbors. We spoke to the Front Desk (Amy) who told us it had to be our devices because of all the routers and hotspots they have rigged up. This couldn't be true because we got it in the lobby and in the ice room and in the parking lot but not in our rooms....she said she'd reset the router but there was nothing she could do....? What? Not acceptable, right? But I believe Amy when she said there is nothing she can do. Finally, a guy on the morning crew (Devon?) gave me the pass to the corporate wifi which was full strength in my room --- why didn't Amy know this? 3) The TV has no remote control. They've rigged everything with Google ChromeCast. First, I didn't know how to use ChromeCast, Amy said "look it up on the internet." But....."I can't get ON THE WIFI!" Next, I went to the parking lot and found out you had to download an app (that I did by the ice machine) but when you don't have Wi-Fi NEAR THE DEVICE, you can't connect. I decided to leeched a very weak xfinity-wifi signal from the nearby cafe, but I could only connected to the TV device in room 225 but I wasn't in room 225!!! 4) I decide "F-it! I'll take a hot shower and go to bed." -- NO hot water for a good 15 mins of wasting natures resources. Just ice water for 15 mins, then Luke warm and then it's was hot-ish but for only turning on the HOT, it never really got hot hot. The next day NO HOT water at all, we took showers at Anytime Fitness post workout. The next day, NO HOT WATER? I called the front desk and he explained that the boiler on our side of the hotel is sketchy. I requested a new room, but there was nothing he could do until the maids cleaned the hotel. Which was several hours later. Um.....here's a thought, don't rent out rooms that don't have hot water? Like I said, I asked for a new room a couple times but there were none available....well, none available that were "finished" was the clarification. And there are NO REFUNDS. Convenient, right? This made it all crystal clear that this hotel is still in the works. I feel the contractor was someone's friend who needed work because upon a second look everything seemed to lack the professional touch --- cracked tiles in the bathroom (photo), a manufacturer's sticker still on the sink (photo), and subtle sloppiness throughout when you look closely. Outside of these ESSENTIALS failing, the room is VERY spiffy. They made some nice design choices with the sleak black furniture, bedding/towels, update fixtures, decor and carpet. The bath products were funky and fresh (photo) and the bed was a comfy queen. All and all, this motel, sorry Hotel, is lipstick on a pig. The lipstick is Sephora and fabulous shade but it's still lipstick on a pig being sold as Grade A Beef. They need to figure out the essentials that I listed before I would recommend anyone stay here. NO WIFI, NO TV, NO HOT WATER - makes me unimpressed. read more

Hidden gem. Definitely a hidden gem that's less than $80 per night, at least during the time that I was staying here. Hotel Royal Oak is one of the most interesting Hotel/motel complexes I've ever been in. And it was fabulous. I would say it was very interesting or most interesting to stay here, just because it was the most luxurious I've ever stayed in, especially when you're paying pretty much rock-bottom prices and you're getting a really nice hotel room, based on the room itself and the furnishings inside the units. I for one was almost positive that that was a statue of a dude's head staring at me while I was eating dinner and watching tv during my stay in Royal Oak. I arrived here on my recent October 2016 trip, checking in on the 20th and checking out on the 21st, only here for one night. Wishing you was more just because the room is self was a little fantastic, at least for the price I paid. I think that the Hotel Royal Oak is a converted apartment building that has two floors and Plenty, but limited parking spaces within the private lot for guests. I found this property on hotels.com, checked out the pictures, I fell in love with the price per night. So I instantly booked this property, since it was close enough to Detroit, but not far enough to where I would actually be in the city. The overall experience here at the hotel Royal Oak was that of a four star experience and beyond. Even if it was a converted apartment complex from the outside, it was very very nice at least inside the hotel unit. For the price I pay for this, it was a very good stay. I kid you not. Sure, it was not the Marriott or a Hyatt or even a Sheraton, but it was definitely a comfortable stay and felt like a an apartment that was fully furnished and it was quite the surprise when I walked in for the first time after checking in. The Hotel Royal Oak is located at 811 E 11 mile road. You're in the Detroit suburbs, so your not in the rough inner city of Detroit, just yet. They accept major credit cards, which is always a good thing, as well as cash. Cash is always king too. There is private parking for guests, although it can be limited, there is nearby street parking as well too. Usually the private lot that's close to your room Is best, so you don't need to walk too far to get to your car. The room rates were very good, especially when you are paying less than $75 per night. At least, that's what I was quoted on hotels.com. Not sure what the regular room rates would be, but it is for the budget friendly hotel person who Who that's a good deal and doesn't mind staying in Royal Oak instead of in Detroit. The check in process was really good, really fast, and very friendly. They asked about what I was doing in Detroit and I said I was on vacation. I even asked about Eminem and whether or not they still get people asking about his childhood home in Detroit, and there are some people who do ask, which was pretty interesting. The room itself was as aforementioned very chic and comfortable. It's like a bachelor's pad complete with a mini bar / kitchen area and a bathroom. The bed itself was a king bed and I got about eight hours of sleep on it and it was very heavenly. Definitely well worth experience to be sleeping on this bed for Sure! There aren't really any amenities here, except for ice and vending machines. While it would have been nice to have a pool or anything fancy, I did really enjoy my stay here and enjoy the price per night. Checking out was nice, fast, and very friendly too. Wow I did not really enjoy the 2 Hour Dr. back and forth from Grand Rapids to Royal Oak, it was nice to be able to come here and enjoy Detroit and suburbs. And I did get to see Eminem's childhood home - well, after they demo'ed it a couple years back - before heading back to Grand Rapids. For a locally owned Motel, this place is great. Classic 60's Motel that has been updated very tastefully. Contemporary vibe. Clean. And if you want a great breakfast, lunch or dinner, the Village Restaurant, right next door, is excellent. This is where you get your free breakfast. Be aware they don't serve alcohol if you'd like an adult beverage in the evening. But food is great. I'll be back for sure as I travel to Detroit for business 2-3 times a week. read more

We read reviews from other sites and were a little worried this would be sketchy, but since our visit was just an overnight, and the location was prime to downtown, we kept the booking. Check in was easy breezy. Payment is up front and can be cash or card, breakfast vouchers were given, a small map of premises was provided, and that was it. We booked the signature king room with wet bar and my only angst was that it was first floor. To be fair, I never inquired to a second floor room. I did like that we could park directly in front of our door. The room is true to pictures. I didn't find any dirt or debris that turned me off. Decor is boutique modern, I feel they could have gone retro modern and still hit the mark but it was nice. The ONLY three things we didn't like was 1) no deadbolt on the door, 2) the creepy head bust to which I put in the cabinet, and lastly the bathroom door was barnstyle and I never felt it was completely closed while we had guests stop by. Everything in our room was relatively clean and new. Bedding was white, and very clean, and ample pillows of various firmness. Our room did indeed have heat and air. Noise didn't travel through the walls. Check out was at 11:00, we were given a small grace period after calling front desk. We would totally book again, we were able to walk downtown, and even in the rain it wasn't too bad. Pricing I think is very fair, I think they know their market. read more

I would never stay here again. The maids didn't come and clean our room for starters. I inquired about it and they said the dryer wasn't working. I still don't understand why our bed wasn't made and the old towels taken away, but when I called to get fresh ones they delivered them right away. My main issue is the HVAC system. In order to keep it a comfortable temperature it was hooked up to an extremely old air conditioner that was so loud we couldn't hear the TV. It would go on and off all night making such loud noises it made it hard to sleep. The second night we opted to roast and keep the air conditioner off. The sheets were also itchy and the bathroom floor and tub were slimy. It was overpriced and we were underwhelmed. Also there weren't any water bottles of purchase or anything in the mini fridge. I recommend staying elsewhere. The only reason I'm not giving it a one star review is the staff was nice. read more

We stayed a night at Hotel Royal Oak. It's a converted motel and they have tried hard to make it nice. The rooms seemed clean but still had a smell that was annoying. The staff was helpful and let us switch rooms when the first one smelled like smoke. The location was walking distance to some bars, restaurants and shops so that made it worthwhile. I would not stay there again but I do understand they have entertainment and games on Saturdays and Sundays so that might make it fun! read more

The check-in desk staff was friendly and polite. As I went to my room, I noticed overflowing ashtrays on the outdoor windowsills, balcony and stairs. I thought that was odd, because I was admonished they had a firm no smoking rule. When I open the door to "my" room I was overwhelmed by the worst stench I've ever smelled. The room was dark & the bed was trashed, like 3 people had had a party in the bed. There were towels overflowing from the open bathroom door. I couldn't get out of the room fast enough, I didn't wait around to meet the naked person coming out of the bathroom. I was assigned a different room which had a mold odor but I was exhausted and wanted sleep so I could meet friends later in Royal Oak for dinner. Unfortunately the windows have no ability to block sound and men went back and forth by my room talking, I could hear every word they said and their clomping footsteps. Evidently their "maintenance" people work at night and don't have to follow the "quiet hours" rule. I tried playing white noise via my laptop and headphones but I could hear the hammering on whatever they were "fixing". No way was I getting into that bed, I laid on top of my own blanket, which I laundered as soon as I got home. I took my luggage when I went to dinner and stayed somewhere else. I'd sleep in my car before I went there again. I don't think the housekeeping staff had come to work that day or they lied about cleaning the rooms. Most bizarre experience I've ever had. Oh, and the photographs online are NOT what you will see there, they are a complete misrepresentation. Maybe it looked like that 20 years ago. I think this is the type of place people crash at after partying to much in Royal Oak and can't drive home. DON'T BRING CHILDREN HERE, SERIOUSLY. They texted me a few days later and asked for me to rate them between 1-5 stars. I gave them a 2 and they asked what they could do to improve. I told them what happened and I got THE RUDEST RESPONSE I'VE EVER HAD. Why did they ask if they wanted to argue? They told me their housekeepers were "rockstars". What incredible low cleanliness standards. Evidently the 'cleaners' are family members, no one would keep such slobs. And they told me not to ever come back, as if I would ever do that, lololo. Save your money . Avoid this hotel. This place makes Red Roof seem like the Hilton . The management is extremely rude . Now In response to Jim R - 1. Front desk clerk ( Devon I think ) handed both boyfriend and I the keys directly and was made aware that both of us were to be listed on the room upon booking. The fact that he failed to follow procedure is not my fault nor should a customer be expected to predict or enforce hotel policies because an employee fails to do so. 2. During my phone call with Eddie no mention was made of profane language , he hung up on me mid sentence . This is now the second lie this hotel has told to try to cover up their bad behavior regarding this situation . ( FYI - Eddie also hung up on my boyfriend when he called to inform him of his employees false story regarding me " looking out the window") I have contacted BBB in an attempt to avoid dealing with this hotel directly any more. Now ... Lets talk about the actual room - The temperature was outrageously hot , we asked to have it turned down and we were told to turn on the ac unit in the room because the hotel is all run off one thermostat. The bathroom door was a barn style door and offered no privacy or noise muffling not to mention the fact that because of the barn style door you can clearly see into the bathroom even when the door is "closed" The light switch for the bathroom is located inside the shower . That's right , INSIDE THE SHOWER . The room smelled faintly of mold - but we did not find any evidence of moisture present so we let it go . This hotel had great potential . It's not worth the price they ask for a room though . It is an old run down motel with a new coat of paint and some wood textured laminate slapped on the doors . Here's the worst part about the stay - My boy friend and I rented a room for New Year's Eve because the location was very close to Royal Oak . The cost of the room was being split between the two of us and this was made very clear to the front desk clerk Devon upon booking the room . My boyfriend and I both received keys from the clerk . Boyfriend locked himself out of the room after I had already fallen asleep and the front desk refused to let him in the room because "he didn't have an ID on file " - mind you Devon never asked for his ID upon check in . I spoke to the hotel after finding out my boyfriend had to sleep in his car and I was told by the hotels general manager Eddie Mitchell that "it wasn't their problem " he then proceeded to tell me that a hotel employee ( Jake) said I came to the window when boyfriend was knocking on the door and refused to let him in . - a complete and utter lie as I was fast asleep. This "manager" Eddie was extremely rude to me, and even hung up the phone on me . read more

I stayed the night here on 04/16/19 while attending a concert at the Royal Oak Music Theatre the night of. First of all...let me just say...the front desk/management were friendly, hospitable, and attentive. Not to mention they gave me and my brother a totally sweet upgraded suite! We were very pleased with the epic master room and living area. I will definitely be coming back to this hotel the next time I am in Royal Oak for business or pleasure. Also, it's located in an excellent part of the city just walking distance from all the shops and restaurants. Lastly, the price for our (original room) was right on price point for our budget. read more

I loved this place! My family was in town for a wedding in Royal Oak. There is literally one option for a hotel in the downtown Royal Oak area. I'm so happy we booked reservations at this hotel. Everyone was very happy.....from checking in to checking out. The customer service was very attentive and friendly(Eddie). The rooms were very chic, clean and comfortable. My husband and I were in town for a friend's wedding and stayed here last Friday & Saturday night. The folks at the front desk and on the grounds were all super nice and friendly and helpful. Five stars for the customer service!!! The room: I get that they are working on updating this hotel, and they're doing a good job, just some stuff is a little weird in the meantime. For instance: only one bedside table. No mini fridge or microwave (just saying, usually when I pay $125/night I expect that stuff- certainly in the Boston area it would be default. But. I get that it's a process and you do what you can as you're able). Also need more outlets- all the ones in the room had stuff plugged in. Also, a few hooks for towels in the bathroom would really help, especially if you're someone who likes to conserve water and hang their towel up for re-use and to let it dry. Cleanliness was pretty good, there were a few corners on the window woodwork that were grubby, but overall very clean and nice. I really like that you can select either a liquid or solid flush on the toilet. Yay water saving! The shower head was amazing & water temp and pressure in the shower was excellent. I would stay here again. The connection with the diner next door (YUM) is lovely too. Free breakfast items or $2 off your order with hotel stay. Sweet!! We didn't ask about using them but it also looks like the hotel has several nice pedal bikes to rent. read more

We stayed here a few months ago. Chosen because the location and price were great. In response to some of the less than positive reviews - yes, some pieces and parts of the building are old but get over it - it's an old building so it's to be expected. You can tell they've made a great effort to update the rooms, the decor is cute and hip, staff are over-the-top accommodating and friendly. We walked downtown, to the Farmers Market, etc. There's no question that we'll return next time we come to Detroit. read more

Staying here again, this time 5 days. I have family in the area and enjoy staying here when ì come from Arizona. This is a great hotel with all the necessary amenities (free cable & WiFi, large desk, chair, toiletries, blow dryer, coffee, iron and board etc) I come back here because the location is safe, ample free parking, close to downtown Royal Oak's attractions; as well as major highway. The hotel is run professiinally including helpful and friendly staff. The rooms are large, modern and CLEAN! The price is reasonable, comfortable bed, ample lighting (including 3 Windows [main area, office area and bath]). The widows all have adjustable shades and the main big window also includes room darkening drapes to reduce noise, early morning sun and provides additional privacy). The HACV system is comfortable and there's plenty of outlets. Anyone with complaints need to assess the value here for a clean, safe and comfortable stay.
