Afternoon tea at the Townsend is something that was on my wishlist for a long time and it did not disappoint. The hotel is beautiful! The service was outstanding. We enjoyed seasonal baked goods and mini sandwiches but the desserts were bar far my favorite. I went with girlfriends and we had so much fun dressing up and making a day of it. read more

Was able to get in on the NYE 2025 hotel package! I'm so excited cause these were selling fast right? From the moment that we pulled up, we were treated with high standards I didn't feel sized up by what I had, or looked like. I knew I was gonna be treated with respect regardless of who employees crossed my path. And that is exactly what I got The room was exceptional, I'm pretty sure it was a standard fully stock bar, walk in shower & walk in closet w/safe. it was enough to be next to perfect for us. I'm pretty sure it was less than 150 steps from my hotel room, to the elevator, to the party they were hosting for NYE. Talk about finding a good parking spot! (But w/rooms & location to event) We found a great hotel room located not too close, but not too far to the party or traffic. It sounded amazing knowing I didn't have that many steps to go to carrying my dude if he had one too many party drinks, you know. Not saying he would just wanted to give him the chance to switch the roles. Reason why I say sounded amazing and why unfortunately Townsend hotel did not get all the stars is for the reason we were not able to get into the party to enjoy celebrating ringing in the new year. I guess they hired the Security team to handle entrance into the party. (I am kicking myself why not double checking, my dude's luggage for right attire.)He came in with a brand new pair of all blk adidas dmt. I believe they're called. Also a tan pair of the Dude shoes. We were not able to get in and celebrate ringing the countdown. So we were hanging in the room, we went down not quite 30 minutes before midnight. By time we found out we try to hop in the car, We're getting over to Meijers. They're going to lock the door as he's jumping out of the car to asked to buy a pair of shoes real quick. They're like heck no I gotta get home. So we spent New Year's in the car on our way back to the hotel, that won't let us into the party because of the misunderstanding of the atire. The extra money and time spent wasted. I'm glad I was able to see and experience all of it. That just helps me to read the fine print know that certain places aren't willing to accept their rules being broken, (which I honestly ok w/on other rules) but being half naked could get in, not sneakers). I was stupid and told him to grab his brown shoes and he grabbed the dude shoes SMH. It was really a chance to never mind doesn't matter. Sorry, I have a birthday this month and he having another next month. if the experience was 4+ stars this may be a place we would've been spending one of our birthdays. But kind of feel it last spent more than my values worth already on this merchant. Again, as far as the employees, everyone was amazing it was just a door guy at the party, Wasn't willing to ask anybody (management )if they would let us in to the party based off the shoes my guy was wearing. Kind of a big disappointment. But that's because I let it be more of a fairytale than what it really was. I built the anticipation up.‍ Was able to have a chance to talk to different employees get to know a little bit more about them, where they were from if they were locals, bringing my service dog in was a breeze. I tried to give documentation to show not emotional support dog. It didn't matter. They were comfortable and seem to know the service animal laws. Big kudos for that. On a cold winter day, about 6 years ago, we went to Birmingham and enjoyed a romantic dinner and walk through the park. I remember the tree was lit for Christmas and was absolutely perfect for pictures. It is one of those days that I would consider to be perfect and I was truly very happy. It was that day that we walked past the Townsend Hotel, and I noticed a couple of signs highlighting events that they hosted. One of the signs was advertising their first masquerade ball to be held in October. I have always wanted to go to a masquerade ball. The idea is so seductive to me. A couple of years had passed and we had planned to go to the 2020 ball. Unfortunately, the world shut down and that didn't happen. Last year, the date didn't align for us. So when this year rolled around, I was excited to see that it was a convenient day for us, and our planning began! There were a few hiccups with the ticket sales. Not sure what happened there. It was difficult to find information regarding the ball, and even after figuring out who to contact, it was tough to get a response. Eventually though we got our response and we were able to get our tickets. We chose to get VIP tickets because that's how we roll. This allowed us to have early entry (which was helpful if you wanted pics). We also had a private bar area and a buffet featuring a variety of finger type foods. The tickets do not include alcohol, which we knew, but I was quite surprised at the prices of the extremely limited drink options. $13 for a very small pour of wine. $16 for a mixed drink. No beer options. Some bar areas only accepted cash. Others only credit cards. You cannot run a tab. In all honesty, I think it would be worth it to get bottle service even though the total would have come to $1000 for two tickets (you get 6 tickets with that but we would only need two). The convenience and service would most definitely be worth it in my opinion, even if there is no way two of us could drink a full bottle of bourbon haha. The food and entertainment was superb and everyone was having a magnificent time. We met a lot of fun new people that we will likely remain friends with. The ball was everything I had hoped it would be. I loved having the best dressed and most handsome date in the room. Definitely plan to get a room if you go. It's absolutely super convenient! I was interested to see how the Townsend would compare to the Daxon, which we stayed in very recently. Upon arrival, the staff was very quick to greet us and help us with our numerous bags. The thing about a formal event is that women have a ton of things needed to prepare. We checked in and it was convenient and friendly. Our bellhop walked us to our room and explained all of the amenities. He departed and we began to unpack. I recommend getting a suite. The room is large and suitable for getting ready for a formal event. There are doors closing the bedroom area off so if one of you drinks too much champagne and requires a nap *ahem* they (I) could do so without being disturbed. The bathroom was perfect. Very large and there is a separate vanity where I was able to get ready. This area had a light up mirror and a hair dryer as well. They also provided robes which I think is an amazing touch because we love robes but they are bulky to pack. There is a nice bar area that is pretty solidly stocked. Oddly enough no sink, however. I recommend bringing cash. You have to call the front desk for everything and they deliver it; Even ice. Since I hadn't considered this I ended up tipping $20 for ice lol. We got change from the front desk after that. They have a very small restaurant located inside the hotel. It gets booked quickly so make reservations! It's also pretty costly so expect that. They offer room service until midnight and we chose to take advantage of that throughout the weekend. Room service was a very nice and convenient touch. Overall, our stay was fabulous and we will definitely be back. We considered doing the "Little Black Dress Fundraiser" coming up this weekend but it was too short of notice. We will be first in line next year for the ball for sure. Now that we have a better idea of what to expect we can really do it up right! read more

On top of being dated and not in a good way.....i found the staff to be less than helpful....a few levels below that. Took a earlier flight than expected(a red eye) and wasn't allowed a room even though there were different room types available for check in. I overlooked that they added items to my bill that shouldn't be there because this hotels location is convenient but being way outdated, not accommodating and things on my bill that shouldn't be there i give this hotel a resounding 2 thumbs down !!!!! Been coming here for 10 years + this might be one of the worst breakfasts I've ever had. This has went down to a point I think of no return. They Replaced the regular steak with a pub steak. What kind of high end hotel / brunch is this? There's pure oil all over my food bits of blood I asked for well done. I didn't send my food back, but I will never be back. I came to The Townsend for afternoon tea with my mom, and I have to say I left wanting more. We both had been to tea here in 2018 and had a lovely experience! Things have changed since then and it's not for the better. First, I do appreciate that when you reserve your seating you pay up front so there's nothing to worry about when you arrive. Did I think this was work $155 all in, inclusive of tip? No. When we arrived and valeted our car, there was no one greeting people to seat them at their tables for the tea. We had to stand around and wait for someone to walk by and ask to be seated. Tables were already partly set, and we had some comfy lounge chairs to sit in. We had 3 teas to choose from and the Earl Grey was delightful!! All of the food and desserts came out at once and this is where things got dicey for me. While they had tons of savory options, only 2 were vegetarian. There was no place in the reservation to make special requests, so I assumed I'd be able to tell them there that I was vegetarian and to bring a few extra veggie options. Nope! We were told the kitchen only has enough food options per reservation, and they could not accommodate extras. Absurd knowing there is a full kitchen back there. I was instead offered a salad, which was delicious but not very filling. My mom let me have the two veggie savory options (4 small bites total), and she enjoyed the 3-4 non-veggie options (6-8 bites total). Aside from the food, we expected to be left a tea pot full of the tea we each had as we'd experienced previously here and at other afternoon teas. They instead had someone walking around filling everyone's tea cup, but for a while towards the middle no one came around and my cup sat empty. For the Townsend being such a nice establishment, I expected a much higher level of operational excellence from the afternoon tea experience. The five-star Townsend Hotel I used to frequent is no longer! Stayed in a suite for six nights. The concierge desk couldn't care less about their guests. They barely pay attention to you. One day after our room was cleaned we came back to a partially made bed! Dirty towel still in shower. Asked a man from engineering to look at the bad picture on our television. He never returned. The clincher was the hotel manager who rudely told us that we couldn't have a late checkout (only 2 hours). He was dismissive and unfriendly. Only had one breakfast in the Rugby Grill. It was awful. We stayed here years ago for my brothers wedding and had a great experience. Last year when visiting the adorable town of birmingham we tried the Daxton, which we thought was a bit too trendy for our kids...so went back to the Townsend this year. We got a suite for our family a 5, which consisted of a king bed and living room area. And then we added 2 rollaways to the living room area. They just dropped off the beds and we had to put them down, which I thought was odd for a hotel this nice/pricey. It was a bit cramped for our family of 5, but worked for the little bit of time we spent in the room. We ordered room service one morning, which was tasty. Housekeeping came in after and left many of the dirty empty dishes in the room instead of taking them all. They also didn't make the rollaway beds. I know all hotels are short staffing right now so hopefully housekeeping improves with time. The location is perfect and walking distance to everything in birmingham. It was just an ok experience for the price (over $500/night) , but overall worked just fine for our family so we would consider again when visiting the area. read more

This is my second time staying at the Townsend, and both times the service has been excellent. The staff here are so wonderful, starting at the front door with Gary. Christian at the front desk is another delight. I cannot name all of the wonderful people who helped us at one time or another during our stay, but I can say that they do their best to make you feel at home. It is a shining example of mid-western warmth and hospitality. The rooms are spacious and quiet. The beds are comfortable, including the sheets. Housekeeping does a great job of cleaning and turndown service. The food at the hotel is also delicious. We had room service every morning and ate at the Rugby Grill. There are plenty of options for food and shopping within walking distance, but its nice to start the day with a cup of coffee in bed when you are away from home. We love the Townsend and will be back next time we are in the area. Thank you for taking such good care of us again. read more

Recently visited Michigan and decided to have a girls day out so we decided we wanted to try afternoon tea at Townsend hotel. Looked at pictures and it looked promising however I was very disappointed. The teas that were available weren't anything extraordinary, we only three options we could choose from, they choose the desserts and the sandwiches. Mind you I'm not very adventurous so quails egg just doesn't sound appetizing to me. It was 65 per person and this was not my first time visiting a tea place however it would be nice to choose what you want to eat as well as have better options for teas. I have had mother's day afternoon tea and afternoon tea with the ladies here, both were great. A bit on the pricey side, but the food is good and worth it. I recalled it being around $60+ with a glass of champagne. My mom and my friends loved their experience here. Hard to go to another afternoon spot after having this experience. Victorian tea parlor in Berkeley was a good spot and a bit cheaper, but it has since closed, so this is the last great afternoon tea spot left. Service is top notch here. It can be a bit cool if seated by the door and it's cold outside. read more

1988: Townsend hotel Rugby Grille was like a 1920s movie, complete with French hostess, amiable bartender tending his patrons, with a massive vintage brass espresso maker behind him, alongside perfectly polished crystal wares, waiters who knew the entire menu, a maitre d' who never forgot a bottle of wine or cognac, and invisible busboys, all polished brass and Italian marble, hardwoods and tasteful decor, and every dish precise. The guests were cameo stars in their own personalized dinner theater. Johnny Cash is literally sitting at the best corner table, enjoying a piece of cheese cake. 2023: Townsend hotel Rugby Grille is like a Hungarian train station restaurant from a bad Tarantino film. The hostess doesn't even bother to brush her hair. The waiters are wearing ill-fitting bus driver uniforms, and are clueless as to the most basic requests. The busboys are surly, and wearing ratty track shoes on the dining room floor. There is no maitre d'. The squat surly bartender stands glowering, staring at a soccer match on the tv, entirely ignoring the bar he is ostensibly tending. The food is sub-par at best. Somebody in the kitchen has no idea how to shuck an oyster. Depressing. read more

*Ballroom Review* Top of the line food, service and an overall great experience! My fiance and I have been invited to a couple events in the Townsend's Main Ballroom and their Ballroom Foyer. It was a classy event so we had high expectations, especially because this hotel is located in downtown Birmingham. The event consisted of a cocktail hour beforehand and the main event and dancing in the ballroom. There was a mini bar setup in the foyer and it was stocked with some top of the line liquor and wine. We were really impressed and the bartender made the drinks quite strong. The main event space was much of the same impression. The space looked incredible and there was a lot of space to move around so it didn't feel cramped. We've actually looked at this place for a wedding venue when it was setup and it looked stunning! Google some images of it set up, I didn't feel it was appropriate to take photos of someone else's setup. The meal we had for our event was a three course meal (Caesar salad, filet mignon and a slice of chocolate cake). It was all fantastic and the servers were very speedy and professional. After the event had ended, the dance floor opened up for all of us. The space was quite large for everyone to dance, which was nice. I would definitely recommend booking an event here. Quality service and a professional and beautiful looking venue. I'm sure the prices are worth the experience! read more

I am not going to disagree on the fact that this is a really nice hotel with luxurious feel and nice professional staff but I will be honest there is no way I would stay here again or recommend this place to anyone. I am coming back to our room (2nd floor) today 10/16/21 at 8:30 to put my 18 month to bed just to find the room shaking by a loud DJ party music beneath us. I call the desk multiple times and one of the staff comes and sees how bad the music is but nothing changes. Its 9:15 now and I am trying to find a room in other nearby hotels but everything is sold out so we are stuck here. The whole concept behind hotels is "travelers rest area", I am driving back interstate tomorrow but definitely won't be resting tonight. I don't care how nice this place is if they simply ignore basic hospitality requirements. What am I going to do with your nice smelling shower gel or marble floor in the bathroom if I can't get a restful night sleep? The staff mentioned a couple of times that they were fully booked and I am not blaming them but this is a lousy excuse from the management. If you're planning to host parties, make sure you don't have guests with families/kids staying in the room next to that ( not that I think it's okay to be in this situation if you don't have kids; it's beyond horrible anyways ) but I simply can't till my overwhelmed toddler to hold together three more hours till the party ends. I have been in this situation in apartment complexes with college students before but NEVER heard of this happening in a hotel. You could do better Townsend, you definitely could. read more

We came here for our friend's birthday party. We parked with valet, but the parking structure is near by as is street parking. It's $10 to valet, but if you park in the structure it's free for 2 hours and $10 after. We had had a cocktail hour, then buffet. The food was very good, as were the drinks. The service was very attentive and our beverages were always full. We didn't stay over night so i can't speak to how that is, but the rest of the night was very nice. read more

I will start by saying that the hotel rooms were beautiful and the location was perfect as the wedding we attended was just across the street. Unfortunately, customer service left a ton to be desired. I booked 2 rooms months ago and informed staff at the time we were booking 2 rooms and need them next to each other (or at least within a few rooms of each other). They told me there was no way to guarantee it, but they would leave a note. I also asked if early check-in time was possible as the wedding was beginning about check-in time and they told me I could call that day to find out if it would be possible. We called around lunchtime that day as instructed and were told the earliest we could check-in was 3:00 pm (an hour early). Okay, so when my friend went to check us in a little after 3:00 she was first told we had only reserved one room (which we did not) and it took time to clear that up. After that, she was told only one room was ready and the other one would be ready shortly and they would call us when it was. At that time she double-checked about rooms together and was told the other room was "3 doors down". By 4:20 we had not received a call about our room so I sent my husband to go get us checked in before the ceremony started. At that time he was able to check-in but they told him the room was "down the hall" from the other. When my husband actually went to the room it was on the entire other side of the hotel a 2-plus minute walk from the first room. Of course, there was no time to do anything as the wedding was beginning and we had to be in attendance. Thankfully, we had an adult who could be in each room because if this had been a second room for my kids alone this would have been absolutely unacceptable. In addition, when we returned from the wedding at midnight no one was at the front desk in the lobby. I didn't think much of this as it was the middle of the night and likely the one employee was doing random tasks, but my friend told me when she had come in at 3:00 pm there had also been no one at the desk and a valet had needed to hunt down someone to help her. So I guess if you like a nice room and don't care about check-in times or room locations or number of rooms this is a great place to stay. Otherwise, I would be very careful. read more

Came here a couple times in the past for afternoon tea with a bunch of friends, but I'll be reviewing my latest visit. My friends and I were restaurant hopping around Birmingham and this was our last stop for dessert. It was around 10:00pm when we arrived. The man that served us was extremely proper and thorough in his explanations and suggestions for desserts. It made us feel really fancy. He showed us a box with a selection of tea for us to choose. The temperature of the tea was perfect. It was just under boiling so it didn't taste bitter and was easy to sip on. It came with individual jam jars of honey. Just perfect for relaxing. (They serve tea here so well that it satisfies my inner tea enthusiast.) He rolled out a fancy cart with all of our desserts. Plus he made sure we all had the correct utensils based on what we ordered. Those extra steps! He's on a different level. So I ordered their signature chocolate cake with some berries on the side. It was really rich and paired well with the earl grey. It was a large slice of cake so you'll definitely have some to take home. (It is keeping well after one day of refrigeration so that's good in my opinion.) I just want to come back and experience this type of service again. Great hotel with amazing service. Upon entering, my room was set up with mood lighting and ambiant jazz music, with a little boxed chocolate on the bed. Amenities are great, love the slippers and robe that come with the room! I also tried their room service breakfast. I ordered two cinnamon buns with apple chicken sausage and a bowl of berries. The cinnamon buns were a little disappointing, they were small, cold, and hard. For some reason I was expecting warm and fluffy cinnamon buns. I would get something else next time! read more

Came here for Mothers' Day tea and it was wonderful. First off, the service was impeccable. We had about 4 people helping us, my tea was never empty, and everyone was so helpful and nice. The tea service included bottomless mimosas/champagne/wine and tea. For eats we had a scone with whipped mascarpone and lemon curd, 6 different finger sandwiches like chicken salad with walnut butter, asparagus with boursin cheese topped with a quail egg, salmon with egg salad topped with crème fraiche and caviar and more. Plus a variety of miniature tea pastries and several cakes to choose from. Desserts were self serve and basically all you can eat. So it was pretty amazing for a sweet tooth like myself. The sandwiches are small and admittedly when I sat down and saw the first two courses I thought, "well, this doesn't really seem like a lot of food" but when I left I was stuffed. Tea service is offered seven days a week from 12:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. but its by reservation only so give them a ring. Also regular tea service may be a bit different than the Mothers' Day tea so check their website first just in case. The price is a bit steep but for a nice "splurge" scenario where you get dressed up and treated fantastically it's totally worth it. read more

If anyone was wondering whether they should have tea at the Townsend Hotel... I will say a hard NO. This was the most ghetto tea I could imagine for over $150.00. All I have to say is the nerve of this establishment. I was in shock. I took a friend who was coming into town to the Townsend for Tea... and was raving about the fantastic tea that they served with the Piano player and the beautiful posh surroundings. Apparently the last time I was at tea there was over 10 years ago as the hostess in the restaurant reminded me that things change. You do not sit in the front looking out to the street in a beautiful surrounding. You sit in a dumpy area that looks like a basement and is a pass through for people rollling their luggage to the elevator. When we arrived, there was no tea coordinator as per the OLD DAYS. We were sat and somebody esle's table with the clotted cream and lemon curd already on the table with plastic wrap covering it - with a yellow stickie that said Ingrid something or other. The water glasses were already filled and it looked like someone had drinken some of my water. The staff seemed ill prepared and had no idea what was going on. The place had a din of sound with no atmosphere, no music and definitely no piano player. There was no ambiance... it was the most bargain basement tea I had ever been to for over $150.00. I was in shock. The service was horrible and it felt like a fast food place that just doled out a plate that was pre-prepared and put in the refrigerator with plastic the night before. Everything was cold like they kept it waiting and just pulled out the plate and shoved it on the rack... although there are 3 levels to the rack - everything came on 1 plate and the server took her yellow paper out to with her cliff notes to tell us what was on the plate. I was absolutely mortified with the Townsend, with the tea, with the staff, with the place. I have never been to a more expensive classless place. I am so sorry to be writing this about the Townsend, a place that I used to love. But this place is super ghetto now. read more

The team @ Townsend Hotel are exceptional. I've had a combination of needy requests during this trip and have not been in a great mood. But each time I called front desk, I was greeted and calmed by the staff's hospitality & responsiveness. Those that greet you at the entrance, room service, housekeeping, concierge - every individual was kinder and more helpful than I've ever experienced. The Townsend is a first class experience. I can't begin to explain the feeling you have walking through the door. I would imaging this is how Julia Roberts felt when she was transformed in Pretty Woman. The world is your oyster! We stayed her for a very special event and the Townsend exceeded our expectations. We reserved a King Suite with separate living room and wet bar. The suite was equipped with a small refrigerator, which was perfect for our stay. We were inviting a few friends up to our room for some pre-party celebrating. In the heart of Downtown Birmingham, the Townsend is centrally located and within walking distance to shops and amazing restaurants. Fortunately, our event was in the Townsend Ballroom. It was such a beautiful space and we truly enjoyed our time. The Rugby Grille is also located in the hotel and they offer a nice selection of food and drink. The presidential suite is absolutely stunning! You have access to a private gym, board room, room service and tons more. The bathrooms alone in the suites are worth the trip! The stunning marble walls and bathtubs are breath taking, and the makeup room/ vanity area is beautiful as well. When you call room service for a drink they actually wheel up a mini bar and have one of their bartenders come up to the room and make your drink on the spot. They have beautiful fresh flowers to decorate the room and the food from the Rugby Grill are all offered as well. read more

I just had afternoon tea at the Townsend for my mother's birthday today. It was such a wonderful experience. Marsha was fantastic and really made our experience one to remember. The service was phenomenal. The tea, tea sandwiches, and desserts were very good. The hotel is beautiful. If you haven't been, you must go, you will not be disappointed! read more

We didn't care too much for our stay at the Townsend Hotel, despite their perceived prestige and notable clientele. First, the air conditioning was sub-par. On a hot day, we tried lowering the temperature in our room, however, the room never got cold and stayed at a lukewarm temperature making it hard to sleep. Secondly, the morning that we left the hotel, none of the channels worked on the TV (which is hard to work with to begin with). Third, we were saddened by the lack of amenities offered during our stay. Also, be ready to pay for parking. Thankfully, we knew the area and knew to park in the parking garage next door and leave on a Sunday when the gates to the garage would be open (and not charge us the hourly wage). PROS: The bed was comfortable; the room was clean; the staff was SUPER nice and helpful; we were delivered champagne and strawberries for our anniversary...but we'll never be back. read more

The experience and stay was a nice surprise . I was in town to work on a Commerical . The staff in the hotel is what makes it great . They are warm and accommodating . I had a lovely stay and enjoyed the hotel . Food and wine list was excellent . The gym was better and well equipped than most hotels . Thank you Townsend hotel . read more

What a beautiful hotel! I was invited for a conference/seminar yesterday and upon arriving was intrigued about this hotel, as I've never been before. My mother always wanted us to have afternoon tea here, however never made the time to come. I parked in the parking garage across the street. Parking is free for the first two hours. There is valet parking available, however for the seminar, I noticed so many people were using the service, I didn't want to have to wait when I was ready to go. I was informed the conference would provide a continental breakfast. So I wasn't expecting much outside of bagels, coffee, and juice. Entering the hotel, I was blown away by the spread of tables filled with food. They served eggs, bacon, sausage, bagels, scones, cereal, hashbrowns and more. The waitstaff and the accommodations were wonderful! The conference room was set up beautifully and the sound system was perfect. During break, I wandered around the lobby area of the hotel and took a few photos. The hotel is simply beautiful! Even the bathrooms had their own flair of luxury! read more
