Outside our room. The patio doors were wooden and unable to be secured. The small balcony could be stepped onto my a public path outside.

BEWARE!!!!!!! BAIT & SWITCH HOTEL!!!! Several of us were conned by this unprincipled hotel. They confirmed our pre cruise booking (3 months in advance - for one night/2 rooms). We received a WhatsApp day before travel - so incompetent. They used the overbooking tact and told us we were rebooked too another associate hotel. Where they moved us was beyond shocking! I can't describe the horror and concern my family and I had when we arrived at the Mercure Sunbay... San Giorgio we're paid a lot of money and they robbed us of over £180. I am currently going through a recall with my credit card and I am disputing the transaction. The 2 star hotel in which they moved us to required taxis to get us to the town or literally anywhere that a store existed. The taxi driver couldn't believe we were staying in this hotel! The doors in our rooms didn't lock, the pool was absolutely disgusting!!!! The rooms were not suitable for anyone! I was so scared... NEVER WILL I SET FOOT OR MAKE A RESERVATION WITH SAN GIORGIO. Crooks!

Spent 1 night pre-cruise in a triple room. The room was comfortably spread out over two floors with an internal staircase. The queen size bed was on the upper level and sofa bed on the main level. There were several available electrical outlets by the queen bed nightstand. Room was well kept and clean. Room was also quiet throughout the day and night; no noise from neighboring rooms. Wifi connection worked well in most areas of the room, but did seem to slow during peak times (morning and evening). Hotel location was excellent as there were many restaurants and shops within walking distance. Breakfast: excellent! Served buffet style with a variety of hot foods (eggs/meats) and cold foods (cheeses, fruits, pastries, breads, cereals, and yogurt). The coffee machine worked so well, I wish I could have taken it home. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. Bellman was prompt to deliver our bags at check in. The hotel provided shuttle to the the cruise port was quick, convenient, and included in the room rate.

Hotel San Giorgio had a lot of positive aspects with just a couple of negatives but overall, I would still recommend it for a pre-cruise hotel. A couple months in advance, we chose and paid for a "gold" package. This included pick up from Rome airport, one night's accommodation, dinner, breakfast buffet, Internet and cruise ship drop off. Sure, you could take a train into Civitavecchia but having never been to Italy before as well as a bunch of luggage, I chose convenience over cost saving. High marks for the airport pick up. The driver pretty much spotted us in a crowd (wow, do we really look that obvious?) and took us directly to the hotel. It took about 45 minutes and after traveling for something like 20 hours at this point, I actually hallucinated that the couple traveling to the hotel at the same time had a young Asian son. I later found out he was actually a middle aged man not with them at all and probably not even Asian. My husband has yet to let me live it down. Luckily, through my haze of no sleep and hallucinating jet lag, the front desk had a room ready for us a 10:30 am. The room was nice, had everything we needed including a partial ocean view and a huge marble bathroom. The shower is ridiculously small and has a huge step down when getting out so be careful. We were able to get the room super cold and super dark (my favorite sleep combo) and snoozed for three hours. The location is right across the street from a gravel beach but also right in the heart of Civitavecchia which is nice to explore for maybe a couple of hours. There are a lot of restaurants and some shops nearby as well. Because it was included in our package, we dined at their restaurant. Though there is a fixed menu, we added in an appetizer off the regular menu - scallops in a really nice white wine cream sauce which were amazing (see the pic). We then returned to the lackluster menu geared toward Americans (whom according to the menu, have no taste buds or sense of refinement). I had a rather blah pasta starter and then the pork limone which came with what I can only describe as shriveled up home fries. The lemon sauce was terrible and gelatinous with only a hint of lemon. The hubby ordered up some sort of innocuous sounding Italian fried chicken breast and was treated to a plate of over-fried, thin, dry chicken with french fries. No sauce. Just dry as bone chicken and french fries - because apparently that's what every American wants on their first night eating out in Italy, LOL. Our waitress was bizarre and defensive though we pleasantly muddled through the mess of our entrees. The restaurant isn't really worth your time unless dry and boring is what you are going for and eat for sustenance instead of pleasure. The check out is very early (1030 am) but I was able to snag an extra 30 minutes due to sleeping in. A shuttle took us straight to our cruise ship around noon. This was very convenient and you don't have to carry your own bags. Yeah! The front desk was pretty friendly. They forgot that Internet was included in our package and when we were told we'd have to pay for it, I was just too tired to argue and went without. Side note: why are some hotels so stingy with the Internet? So in the end, I'd probably stay at this hotel for the convenience of hotel pick up, good location and cruise ship drop off. Be picky about what you eat and this works out to be a good deal.

Our Yummy meal we made at our cooking lessons with Damy Mary.

We stayed at the Hotel San Giorgio for three days before leaving on our cruise. It is a sweet, older hotel with some amazing staff. I made arrangements before we arrived to pay extra so we could get our room early in the day. It was ready and waiting for us. The morning breakfast food is amazing. Such a big selection and all so fresh. You will not leave the breakfast hungry, maybe a little too full. We took a cooking class with Damy Mary and had the best fun!! I suggest that you make time in your schedule for this because it will be the highlight of your trip. They also provided a really nice transport for us to the cruise ship, free, and they also were able to arrange for someone to meet us when the ship docked to drive us back to Rome to the airport, 50 euros each.

The hotel is old but is well kept. The bathroom shower was very small. The staff are very friendly and speak English. There is a free continental breakfast in dining area on ground floor. The pastries were excellent. There is a barista during breakfast making you free coffee drinks or tea. I loved the cappuccinos. It can be noisy due to its location near fire station, ambulances and busy streets. I recommend you stay here for the reasonable price and proximity to the port and city attractions.

Our travel agent dropped the ball and we…read morediscovered shortly before leaving home that we had no lodging in Rome the night before the cruise, nor did we have transfers from Rome to the ship in Civitavecchia, which is an hour-plus drive. I won't go into all the details, but the alternatives she offered us were all unacceptable and overpriced. We decided to take matters into our own hands despite the language barrier. With the help of Google Maps, we found the Hotel Traghetto in Civitavecchia. I engaged in several rounds of email correspondence (sent in both English and an Italian translation thanks to Google Translate) with hotel staffers Michele (that's the Italian form of Michael) and Nicola, who both responded to my many detailed questions promptly despite the nine-hour time difference, regardless of whether I sent my messages in the morning or the evening, and they responded in perfect English every time. Not only was the Hotel Traghetto only 99 Euros per night (a bargain compared to the 600+ Euros we would have paid for lodging in Rome), but they also arranged to have a taxi waiting for us at Fiumicino/Da Vinci Airport. Marco, the taxi driver, was right outside baggage claim holding a sign with our name on it. He took our bags and drove us (fast! Apparently if you pay a fee, you can drive on roads where the speed limit is 130km/hr - that's 80mph for us Yanks) directly to the hotel. We paid him 130 Euros in cash for this speedy service, and it was worth every bit. When we entered the hotel, we were greeted by (forgive me, it's been three weeks and I'm jetlagged) either Luigi or Giovanni at the front desk, who checked us in and took our bags up to our room, while insisting that we be seated in the adjoining parlor, where Marina served us complimentary cappuccino, which was a welcome break after such a long journey (see photo of my husband). We then went up to our room to freshen up before taking a stroll around town. During our stay, we asked Luigi and Giovanni (whoever was manning the front desk at any given time) many questions about where we should eat, where we could find a pharmacy, where we could buy souvenirs, where we could find the free shuttle bus to the ship (literally around the corner!), and each time we were given a free map that they marked up for us: "You are here. Go out the front door, turn this way, and the place you are looking for is over here." The next morning, we enjoyed a complimentary buffet breakfast, again attended by Marina, and much better food than you would get at any hotel in the U.S. The room was basic by American standards, but you must remember that all we were seeking was a place to sleep for one night between our arrival in Italy and embarking on our cruise, so our needs were minimal. The only negative thing I can say is that the beds were beyond firm. I like a firm mattress, but these were super hard. Still, that was a small price to pay for all of the pluses to this place. The staff was awesome and delivered on every single promise made on the website and then some! We would 100% stay there again!

It's within walking distance of the cruise ship area. The train station is just a 5-minute walk away, and buses to the cruise port stop about 3 minutes from the hotel. The bus fare is €6 and conveniently drops you off inside the cruise ship terminal. For the convenience and the friendly service, I would definitely choose this hotel again.
