I discovered this place while writing a chapter for a guidebook on small inns. It does not look…read morelike much from the outside. But the rooms are museum pieces of old Swiss chalet life. Arolla pine walls and ceilings, featherbeds, antiques. And everywhere it all feels real. The family lives there and you will see the grandchildren running around. The views are naturally great. You can walk to the nearby botanical gardens or visit an underground Swiss artillery fort from ww2 just a few steps away. Down in the village is the lake with boats for hire and ski lifts. This is a simple old fashioned inn with excellent cooking of the bourgeois style by the owner and his wife. The guy has his own cows and shoots his own game. It is not at all pretentious but people from Geneva have made sure it is far from unknown. I ate there at Easter and there was no crowding at all. The restaurant is very simple, a large room with big glass windows for seeing the views. I have sent several friends here for romantic weekends and anniversaries and they all loved it, because it is unique. It is not for high maintenance types looking for a five star hotel. But in this day and age it is a revelation, to me, to find something so authentic and flat out charming. Rooms are small and each is different, most with balconies. They have put tv in the rooms now. Be warned that it is very simple. The owner is a big guy, rather shy and their daughter now takes a hand in running the inn. Check the prices but a room should run about 150 dollars, less than half what you pay in nearby Verbier

Given the state of the W brand ever since Marriott took over I was very skeptical that this hotel…read morewould impress me but impress it did. W Verbier is a throwback to what the W hotels used to be like with their tasteful and cheeky modern design, plentiful considered amenities and great service. Actually the service here is better than any W I've ever stayed at, even before the Marriott purchase. We were provided with a personalized tour of the facilties, a welcome gift, and a very warm reception from the staff at the front. When they learned our check out had to be really early in order to take a car two hours away to catch a train, the staff arranged for the private driver and made sure we had breakfast packed for our morning journey. Fabulous! The rooms are fun cross between quirky modern W design and chalet, just as you'd expected. Ours came with a large balcony overlooking the valley and the cable cars which couldn't be more appropriate for this kind of place. I do take issue with the tedency of some W hotels to partially expose the bathrooms; this should be an option to enable rather than the default as not every stay is going to result in lewd behavior but it's a nitpick. The only minor gripe with the hotel is the main restaurant brasserie is just O.K. While the design of the space is spectacular and the service is great, the food is standard issue Switzerland: just O.K. and extremely expensive. Overall, wonderful. Recommended.
