Don (the owner) is a complete JERK! We bought a bed that was on display, despite the label that clearly read "SOLD Mendoza" the owner still had the nerve to come out screaming from across the warehouse in front of other customers to insult my husband for attempting to disassemble the display bed instead of taking a scratched, chipped, rusted inferior bed he had thrown in the storage truck. Why would we pay for something that is not as shown and is clearly marked sold to us? Don also threatened his employee for helping us. This guy has no work ethic. Love this place! COME HERE before going to the big name stores. They have great prices and the people are always very friendly. I've bought a dresser, an oversized leather chair, and I just recently bought a love seat. So far, their furniture has been great quality that will most certainly last through the years. Found these guys on craigslist and decided to check it out, since I am in the Valley once in a while. Easy to find (north side of the airport) and plenty of parking. It's used furniture, so it's hit and miss. Wanted to look at a brand-new console table, but it was too large for our space. Picked up a painting for pretty good price, and we plan to come back for smaller pieces. It's like any other used source: hit and miss, so go back regularly. We purchased a used model and we understood that we would be purchasing a model that worked but with the understanding that the model was used and being sold as is. The salesman advised that the model worked and was in great condition but the model was used. The appliance was delivered today Monday January 31st and once plugged in it did not work. Upon realizing that the appliance didn't work we phoned the company and they stated they would exchange the model but refused to deliver the model for free. The representative we spoke with said we would have to pay another $55 delivery charge making the total deliver charges $110.00. I asked the rep to let me speak to the owner and that's when Mr. Fenning picked up the phone and yelled that the frig was sold AS IS and that we should have looked at the fine print. I explained that I understand AS IS but AS IS does mean NOT WORKING. I also explained to Mr. Fenning that Monroe the gentleman who sold the refrigerator to my husband stated that ALL of the models worked. Mr. Fenning yelled and screamed out his policy and said we should have tested the model before we purchased it. How could we test a refrigerator that is sitting outside with no outlets? Mr. Fenning also yelled and told me he wouldn't be willing to pay for the new delivery charge of the exchanged mode and hung up on me. I'm not satisfied whatsoever with the level of customer service this company reflects. Once the item was sold we were no longer customers of this company. I would have been satisfied if Mr. Fenning at least paid for the new delivery charge being that they sold us a model that did not work. I feel like Mr. Fenning should not have charged us an additional delivery charge being that he sent us a model NOT TESTED and NOT WORKING. Why should we as the customer have to pay an additional delivery charge for models being sold that are not working and NOT being tested before they are delivered? Also after Mr. Fenning hung up the phone on me I called back and asked Terry who informed me that she was sales person what was their business license number was. Terry informed me that she didn't have it and didn't know where it was located in the office. I'm glad this happened because we were getting ready to furnish our entire new home from this store because we thought they had great deals. They might have great deals but I will never give a store money that treats their customers like crap. read more

I gotta say - after two visits - I'm a total fan of this place. No, it ain't Room and Board or Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, but it IS a fantastic place to find some exeptionally cool pieces. I went there twice over a couple of weeks to furnish an apartment I'm going to be using for 3-months. They have all kinds of stuff (read ALL KINDS OF STUFF). Some just ok, some nice and some really, really nice stuff. You have to cycle through though, and don't expect to find everytyhing you need on one visit. You will find some great, quality pieces for a great price, though. Go with a good attitude and a sense of adventure, and I think you'll find the sales folks extremely warm, funny and willing to help you in any way they can. Found this place by accident when I first moved to L.A. and was not disappointed. Picked out some stacking chairs, a desk and armchair, about $200 worth of pieces...lots of other great couches and stuff, but just don't have room for that in my small apartment. Anyway, when I went to pay they actually rounded all the prices down to make it an even number, and I got all of it for about $140! I don't know if they do this for everyone, but was very pleased and surprised at the discount. It can get busy, and the people that work there can be hard to track down if you have a question, they give their first attention to people buying bulk or who are buying furniture for staging. Also not everything has a price-tag on it. Not everything's as cheap as I ended up with, but I'm happy with what I got, so that makes up for it. No delivery, but I had someone with a van with me, so it worked out just fine for what I needed. read more

I love this place. As you will read in the other reviews, Hotel Surplus Outlet sells a mixture of used and new furniture as well as used textiles (rugs, drapes, tablecloths, etc), dishes and assorted decorative and electronic items. Some of the used pieces are in good condition and some are not, some are good quality and others average quality. Most things are priced accordingly and everything is negotiable. They are fair but the bottom line is - if you don't like the quality or feel that the price on something is too high - you have the option of not buying it. I have found some great things there at great prices and, because I have always been nice to the salespeople, they have always been generous with me on pricing and gone out of their way to help. Among the items I have bought there: an all-in-one Sony stereo (which works beautifully), an outdoor table and chairs, barware, daily dishes (a matching set of 18 in great condition - and at a price considerably lower than I could have found for inferior new stuff), serving pieces, new bar stools, a bunch of large mirrors which look much more expensive than the $30 - $50 I spent, and a bunch of other, assorted things. With all the money I have spent there, I do not regret a single purchase. If you are a savvy shopper, know how much the used items would cost if you were to buy them new, and are flexible or creative in the style of what you need, you have the opportunity to do very well at this store. If you go in thinking that everything will be a great buy or expecting to find a specific item in a specific style, you are likely to be dissatisfied. read more

I went here sole-ly on Beth T's review...I was curious to see what they have to offer, prices, and etc. (I do house staging sometimes)...anyway, this place has everything you could possibly want and especially cool if you are on a budget or moving to your first apartment/house...For people just getting into the work force for the first time...perfect place to buy what you need. I, on the other hand, am a bit spoiled...I can see where an end table, a lamp...something like that would be a good choice for a den/family room...in my abode, but, I would not buy a house full of their furnishings. If I could give ZERO stars, I would. We had bought a dining set and as soon as it was delivered, I sat on the chair, and it broke. I am far from heavy, so the only Conclusion that was made was that it was poorly constructed. We then called the "owner" Don, who was disrespectful, rude, and yelling at us for saying the chair was made cheaply, and we wanted a replacement. The price of furniture is modest, quality is poor to fair, staff (with one exception) are professional. We purchased there six times over a two year period On the seventh sale we had a problem with the delivered dinette set. It was broken. When I called to get a replacement, I was transferred to Don, the owner. Don was overly defensive, condescending, insulting, and bragged about the fact that use to implode buildings and he really understands furniture ... kind of strange. First and foremost, you must understand that this is a Hotel SURPLUS Outlet, meaning it is used furniture. I prefer and appreciate that because it is commercial grade and quality, that has been used and with a little cleaning, can be as good as new and last for YEARS longer than regular furniture. With that said, they have a great selection of hotel surplus as well as some new items. I stuck to the hotel items and got a LOT of great furniture. The staff was extremely helpful not only during my shopping, but also during the loading and preparation for shipping. Don made himself available and even ensured we were fully introduced to his team -- Gloria was AMAZING and Erin was very helpful. If you're looking for new and gently used furniture look no further. They are constantly getting new items and their prices can't be beat! Be advised they do not deliver but have a handy two-sided printout on hand. One side is delivery companies. Some are hard to get a hold of and all of them changed the delivery fees. I called one week and would be quoted one price the next week I was given a different number. Sometimes as much as a $50 difference for a delivery 7 miles away. Hotel Surplus Outlet has some really good deals. I was able to, nicely, furnish my guest bedroom for under $500 dollars, with good quality furniture. This included not just the furniture, but also some artwork and a couple of lamps. I also bought a large wall mirror, 2 accent chairs, and a couple of patio lounge chairs. In total, I saved a huge amount of money. While the saving are good on liquidation furniture, the new furniture they sell is a bit pricey for the quality. It's the same low quality, from China, furniture you see on Craig's list,except Hotel Surplus charges up to 75% more. In summary, go for the liquidation deals, you'll save money, I did. read more

I think this place has a fantastic concept to give new lives to the used Hotel furnitures, and they offers new products as well. The customer service was always great at the store. However, I was looking for a custom-made sofa, and I spent 2 hours to go through online catalog onsite, give sales person Erin my choice, dimension & fabrication, and waiting for her to contact sofa maker & get back to me on details/price/delivery, I followed up with her and left 3 messages in 7 weeks period, and never received a call back, this order could have been about 3k. now I have to start over and look for another store. read more

I did not end up finding anything that tickled my fancy but I had to come check out their options given all the good reviews. I think this place is hit or miss. The staff is very nice but I found the selection underwhelming. I think if you come back a few times and are checking out what new inventory they're getting consistently, you could find a needle in a haystack. Most pieces looked average and nothing very unique or special. They have both new pieces and used from hotels. Overall, it seems hit or miss. If you're in the area, it may be worth checking out. I drove about 40 minutes each way to check it out and regretted it. Their online inventory actually ended up being pretty representative of most of their stuff so try checking that out first. read more

I have bought several pieces at hotel surplus and I am generally happy. What has bothered me is the customer service. On my first jaunt in to the store everything was smooth sailing however the second go round it seemed the staff wanted to joke and talk to each other more than checking me out. My husband and I waited for some time while the owner and his staff talked. I do like the store but what is troubling is the owners response to negative feedback on yelp. As an owner take responsibility and accountability. Stop blaming your customers or giving you bad reviews. If reviewers keep commenting on the same issues than something must be wrong. read more
