Let's start with the great stuff. I give FIVE starts to the staff. Always helpful, kind, welcoming and trying to offer suggestions and solve problems. Great LOCATION, 3-7 minutes walk to beach and restaurants - but then, Catalina is very small so you can say that any other place would offer the same thing. The "Cottage" looked cute and promising from the outside. It had a cute fridge that proved helpful. The inside .... Old, sad, super basic with no attempts whatsoever to lighten it up. The beds were comfy there was AC, so that was good. But you truly felt as if you were inside a bad make shift box with two beds , a tiny tiny moldy shower. A tiny vanity with a tiny mirror. The bedroom space was clean, but the tiny shower was very uncomfortable. If I was the owner of that place I would add a cheap full length mirror, add some shelving for bags , a picture, I dunno something to make it more comfortable and mostly important clean that shower mold lines. The lobby offered good coffee. This place has potential to be better, but does it want to? read more

My wife and I stayed at this hotel on Catalina Island and had a very disappointing experience. On our first night, we returned from the grocery store and discovered we were completely locked out of our room. Our luggage, valuables, and groceries were trapped inside. For over two hours, hotel staff had us running up and down the stairs trying numerous different room keys that did not work. We were eventually told that the maintenance employee was asleep and not answering his phone. After more than two hours, we were finally offered a different room, but we still had to wait approximately another 30 minutes for maintenance to arrive and force the door open so we could retrieve our belongings. By then, the groceries we had just purchased were sitting unrefrigerated and beginning to spoil. To make matters worse, the replacement room had visible mold underneath the sink. We contacted management afterward regarding the significant inconvenience and lack of access to our room, but no refund, credit, or meaningful resolution was offered. Being locked out of your room for hours with your belongings trapped inside is unacceptable, and the lack of response from management made the situation even more frustrating. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend staying here based on our experience. read more

The lady at front desk wasn't very helpful, I informed them wifi password provided wasn't working so she said she will let maintenence know, never got an update once. My phone didn't have great reception so I was pretty bummed she never updated me on how to fix for my three night stay, place was dirty I found hair everywhere that was a dark brown color and I'm blonde. It was extremely disappointing that the hot water didn't stay on for more than a few seconds, I tried to be nice and politely ask the front desk about it and I never got a solution on that either. Overall great experience. Just a little bit of issues here and there. So amazing staff no issues there, but i did stay in the cottages, and first issue there was the bed not staying put as it would slide. Also the water would not be set at a stable temperature . It would go from scolding hot to really cold. Also shower heads need more pressure. The door also too close to the toilet and it wind up hitting my head. Also windows could use some sheers to let the light in while still maintaining privacy. Other than that amazing stay. Good bang for your buck. read more

We thought we got a room ended up in a very small cottage the room was very small bed was not attached to wall so it kept moving. The restroom door would not lock. Was not able to lock front door because it did not have the hole on the wall. Floors were super slippery like if they cleaned with baby oil. Unless you want to feel like your on a motel 6 I do not recommend this place read more

Our room was extremely small with no where to hang clothes or even a towel - we had to hang our towels on the curtain rods. Every detail felt very old, grimy, unkept, and in some cases rusty. We booked our stay with them && we did have an issue with our room door and they were quick to fix it and any issue that came up they were on top of it. The staff and maintenance is wonderful and so helpful. Definitely recommend staying here if you're ever on the island. My recent stay at Hermosa hotel in Catalina Island. There are total 75 stairway steps all the way we're our room at the worst part is going up with all our luggage we are family of 4 plus 1 small dog also I realize that the room has no carbon monoxide. The room is equip of stove utensils kitchen stuff except for baking. It has 1 room 1 queen bed and my children slept in the livingroom with portable hard sofa single size. ​6am my children are already awake because the livingroom is so bright In fairness the views are so beautiful! Other than that it's not worth it for me to spend $1,704 for 3nights 4days we have to climb the stairs all the way to our room like 75 stairway steps Like we are family of 4 we need comfortable bed not hard portable sofa bed read more

Just got back home and had to make a review. We LOVED this hotel. It was very affordable and perfect for me and my partner. We had cottage C it came with a kitchenette which included a small stove, sink, microwave, and mini fridge along with a counter top and storage with some dishes and silverware. Bathroom and TV were tiny but we made it work. The staff was absolutely amazing! Super friendly and helpful. I believe the staff who helped us was named Juan, he was great. read more

What a dilapidated mess. It's kind of embarrassing that we stayed here. I was hopeful as recent reviewed stated there was remodeling happening. We had a remodeled cottage. The cottage is just a crappy hotel room that shares a wall and the other rooms are hostel style (aka shared shower). We stayed for a special event and were given 2 celebratory beer coupons at their "bar" which is a counter the front desk lady will give you a can of beer at. We took the cans to go and the beers were spoiled- the date on the can was over a year and a half old. Bleh! Unless you are on the 1st floor, you have a lot of stairs to climb. Cottages at the very top. No elevator. So if your key card doesn't work, etc then you are about to get your cardio in. The view at the cottages is city, not beach and is cut off. The worst part is the maintenance and cleanliness. The walls literally are splattered with stuff, sheets stained, mattress covers has holes. I mean, it's terrible. Tv in our room didn't work. Light bulb missing in the ceiling fan above the bed. Old toilet paper holder still in wall. Shower time so uneven, it looks like a kid installed it. Overloaded outlets all over the common area. Window ACs installed with styrofoam. Lead paint windows don't open. Bath fan cakes with dust and doesn't work. At check in there was a dirty (yellow/brown streaks) used wash cloth hanging on the curtain rod. The employees openly complained about their job and you can hear it coming down the stairs. The front door to the hotel is not secure (no key or fob, just open) and there is no one at the front desk after 8-9ish (they don't give a firm time). Omg and the bed is crazy. It's pushed up in the corner and moves like crazy- I think it's on wheels. There is a wall AC that's on a timer you turn and only stays on 2 hours max. The timer ticks - like a clock timer. It's a nightmare. I know there are only 2 pet friendly options on the island - this and the far away Canyon place so I recommend you do an air bnb or Vrbo if you have a pet. Hermosa is the official hotel for a local race that I participated in. The hotel is conveniently located close to the water and only a few minutes from the race start and finish. I stayed at one of the family units, which has a bedroom, a family room, a kitchen and a bathroom. I would describe the unit as rustic, similar to the Crystal Cove Cottages. It's a little like stepping back in time. Modern conveniences include only a small microwave, refrigerator, a wall unit heater in the family room and a TV. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. There is a coffee bar in the lobby where hot cocoa and apple cider packets were available throughout the day. For what I got, it was pricey but it was a busy weekend and the hotel was full. For a lower price I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Just keep in mind it is rustic and charming and don't expect to be in a modern hotel room. read more

This place is a bit of a dump. The one staff member we saw was nice and tried to be helpful. There is no one around after sunset. Hermosa Hotel is an old hotel and it shows. I do not know what the other hotels go for but sharing a bathroom with complete strangers is uncomfortable at best and dangerous at worst. There is a sink in the room that is "private", but the toilet and shower are shared with the room next door, so there is constant locking and unlocking of doors. The sink in the room is awkward. There is a coffee station in the lobby. And a lobby bar, but we never saw anyone working there. Hermosa Hotel, on Catalina Island was built in 1896 by Hungarian immigrant, Benjamin Rosin (1860-1935). Originally operated by the Rosin family, the historic Hermosa Hotel is a part of Catalina History. It offers visitors a glimpse into the island's past and is one of the few hotels that survived the 1915 fire. They once used the slogan "I Survived the Hermosa Hotel". They also once sold on t-shirts advertising "Sleep Cheap Catalina." They should probably still sell these shirts. read more

We came across Hermosa Hotel when we were looking for an affordable place to stay that was in the heart of Avalon. The rooms are fairly outdated, and rough around the edges, but for the price, it was all we should expect. We didn't run into any issue while we stayed there; staff was friendly, place was fairly clean. Things definitely need updating, but it was a pleasant stay for us, so we can't complain. Walking distance to shops, restaurants, and the heart of Avalon. my only gripe would be the shower; the curtain hanged on the outside of the shower which coupled with the high water pressure, left the bathroom floor pretty wet. I'm not entirely sure I'd return to Hermosa, unless they renovate the suites, because that place could be amazing! read more

Also really enjoyed having dishes, a stove, fridge, and utensils in the cottage. Baggage storage room was also super handy! I needed a hotel to stay in for one night at Catalina island. The front desk was very accommodating. I was given room 44 which had a cooking area, a nice bed and shower. The room was so clean I almost thought it was new. The only problem I had was a fan that wouldn't turn off. I called the management number late at night and within 10 minutes it was fixed. They also provided free coffee in the front lounge every day. In addition, there is a luggage area under camera surveillance, and you can put your bags there after you checkout but before you leave Catalina. The front desk employees were very helpful and friendly, and the experience was great! Just a warning - if you don't like stairs there are lots of them as this hotel was built in the nineteenth century. So get ready for a workout! read more

For context: We only stayed one night (my two teenage boys & I), in August at the peak of summer crowds. The staff was super nice, helpful, & accommodating to our needs. We arrived before checkin time & storing our luggage there was no problem while we went to explore the area. And our room was ready a little early so we got to enjoy our room sooner than expected. They also accommodated our request for a late checkout, so got to have the room until 1:00 instead of 11:00. The hotel is in a fantastic location. Short walk from the port where the ferries drop you off... short walk to everything actually. Great central location. We stayed in the Ocean View Deluxe (aka apartment with ocean view) room. I didn't realize when booking that THERE ARE 90 STEPS UP TO GET TO THIS ROOM. It's steep & there is no elevator. And if you're out of shape like me, it's not fun. It's the only negative about this room. The views from the two balconies are awesome (attaching pic of the sunrise view from this morning). There's air conditioning... LOVED that. So if you don't mind all the steps, then you'll love this room. Personally, I don't think I would book this room again because of all the steps. Overall, I liked the hotel, staff, & location so would definitely recommend. read more

This is the worst hotel on Catalina island. If you stay here be prepared to have random people posing as staff members from the mental institution on the hill. I kid you not. My wife and I after leaving a wedding were having trouble with our key getting into our room. The time was around 10pm and there was no hotel staff behind the desk or in the hotel to our knowledge. A man claiming to be maintenance came from the back room and said he was going to call the police on us for trespassing. Mind you we kept showing him our key and he kept refusing to help us. This whole time our dog is locked in our room and we cannot get to him. This asshole is telling us we have to either wait until morning or he will call the police. My wife starts cussing him out and yelling at him to get someone to help us. I do not give a sh!t if you think that's wrong. I started yelling at this worthless human being telling him to get maintenance. After about 30 minutes of this asshole claiming to be hotel staff he just leaves and we finally get ahold of someone on the phone. The actual maintenance comes down (his name is Kevin) and informs us this person is a mental patient that "gets out" from time to time and comes to the hotel. He goes on to tell us that he has been banned on several occasions. He then says we would be receiving a FULL REFUND on our stay which was over $600. Did we ever get a refund from Kevin or David (hotel manager) no we did not. Did we ever hear back from our multiple calls to the hotel to get our refund? No absolutely not. This place is trash wrapped up in deceit and horrible customer service. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. read more

It's worth splurging on a nicer hotel especially since most places on Catalina Island close around 8 PM, so you will spend a good chunk of time in your hotel. This hotel was not worth the money. It's very old, dirty, and tiny. The ceiling fan was caked with dust, when turned on, it flung dust right onto our bed below. The bathroom is so tiny and humid. If you try to open a window to let fresh air in, your window is 5 inches away from another guests window. The bathrooms are disgusting, it's practically falling apart. The shower handles don't work, it'll fluctuate between boiling hot water and ice cold water while you shower. The bathroom sink is so short, with handles that are covered in mind. The bathroom floor always just feels dirty too? It felt like they didn't even clean the bathroom floors. Showers are dingy and yellow, covered with old dirt and sand on the floors. I was looking forward to staying here since some people recommended it but our room was not pleasant unfortunately. :( read more

This place is a complete mess. Nothing is right and they need to invest a lot of money if they want to turn this establishment around. We understand that the hotel is old and we don't mind that but we feel that it was straight up deceiving compared to what we saw online. We stayed in room 50 and 51 and they are so small and pretty much have nothing in it. Not even a proper night stand!? Electric cables are dangling all over and what is left of the smoke detector is just the plastic support. The rooms appeared to be next to monthly tenants and on-property employees. The place is dirty and there is mold on the baseboards. We found a dirty beach towel under one of our bed. Some of our bathroom's towel were stained too. They apparently went through a remodeling but this must have been some quick fix type of work because nothing looks up to par. Windows are sealed by paint to the point that you can't open them from the inside (but you can push them open from the outside!), new curtains rods have been installed but they don't allow for any privacy. There are so much to point out but this will not fit in an online review. Feel free to look at the attached pictures to see how depleted this place is. This place is not it and for this price this looks more like a scam than anything else. Avoid it at all cost... it's not worth the $300+ a night price tag. read more

We stayed at this hotel from October 13-15 2023 for the Jazz Festival. The unit was Letter I.This place was horrible little to no lights. The bed was not secure mattress kept moving off of foundation. No hangers to hang your clothes, no luggage stand for your luggage. The shower was disgusting it had rust or some kind of stain in shower floor. No fan ventilation in bathroom had to keep opening the window which was a security issue. The pillows was dirty and dingy. I went to Catalina in early September with two relatives, and after not being satisfied with our cramped room, the wonderful lady at the front desk honored our request for a bigger room at no extra charge. My understanding is that she cleaned it herself. It was ideal. The bathroom connected two rooms on either side. I loved cuddling up in my twin bed. We'd all even return to the hotel during afternoons for a nap before we went back out. I still reminisce about it often when I go bed. Keep up the good work! read more

My party & 1 stayed in 2 OCEAN VIEW SUITES for 2 nights.  We were scheduled for 3 but these rooms were so disgusting that we checked out after 2 even though we couldn't get our money back.  There is nothing about these rooms that would make anyone enjoy staying here, nor does it justify the price. My mistake: I mistakenly interpreted 90 steps to mean steps, not STAIRS. Who in their right mind would stay in a room to which you have to climb 90 stairs with luggage, groceries, and a dog?  The rooms themselves are disgusting.  The floors are so filthy that your feet are black in minutes; every rug was so sticky it stuck to your feet.  And the furniture is below goodwill quality and filthy; one of the sofas only has 3 legs.  The kitchen had 1 coffee cup & 1 wine glass.  To say these are ocean view suites is a stretch.When I complained about the condition of the room, they said my 4# toy poodle left pet hair all over the room.  Except, poodles don't shed, just further proof that the room was dirty when we got there. read more

We stayed in the cottage at the top floor, and we absolutely loved that the views were amazing and so accessible and close to everything. It was only about a two-minute walk to the main street. The cottage was so beautiful and comfortable, we will definitely be coming back! The bedroom doors open right up to one of the balconies, which was our favorite part of the cottage! We had a terrible experience here. First of all the room looked nothing like pictures, secondly we didn't have a full set of towels (just two body towels,) but that's not the worse of it! The room we stayed in had BED BUGS! This was suppose to be a nice getaway and birthday gift from my man and instead it was on of the most miserable experience we've had together. I got bit sooo many times I'm still in shock about the whole situation, I can't believe it happened! I woke up like at 3:30am because I was itching so much, when I got up, I asked my boyfriend to check out my back and I had a big red bump! When we checked the bed we instantly saw three bed bugs. Unfortunately, we had some of our luggage right next to the bed. We got no sleep and we ended having to cancel the rest of the plans; which, caused us to look out in money. Where do I begin; My Gf & I came to visit Catalina Island for the first time. We also had signed up for the Marathon. This was back in March 2022. We decided to booked this hotel for the entire 3 days we were going to be staying. It was recommended by the Website where we had purchased the tickets for the marathon. Anyhow we arrived the day before the race around 7:30pm. We went directly to the hotel because we were exhausted and needed to rest for the next morning and run a marathon. When we got there the front lady was nowhere to be found for at least 10 mins. When she finally showed up she asked for the name of the reservation and first thing she said was " oh I'm glad you guys got here before 8pm because I was about to leave ". My gf & I were so tired that we ignored that comment. After a total of 25 mins... we get the keys and she start giving us directions to how to get to our room. Little strange but we were going with the flow. After leaving the hotel ... yes leaving the hotel we walked for about 3 mins away from " Hermosa Hotel " to this weird hallway and stairs surrounded of rooms that I thought they were abandoned. I immediately had a bad feeling about this. When we finally got to our room... it smelled like cigarette smoke , the bathroom was so tiny and filthy dirty. And no to mention the Bed Sheets had stains on it and some mold on the corners of the floor & walls. It was so bad that we decided to run back to the hotel and surprise... the front desk lady was gone. NOBODY was on-site to answer any questions or get some help. After insisting on calling the manager phone number.. we got a call back from the front desk lady. we immediately explained her the situation and told her we didn't feel safe sleeping in that room. She said there was nothing she could do to help until the next morning. So basically we had no other option. So I told her that If I got sick due to the conditions of the room I'd take'em to court. She flew to the hotel in matter of minutes and told us we could not stay in the hotel at all. Because of what I've said. I have been wanting to write this review for long time and I finally did it. Night and Day After new owners and a few rough patches Hermosa Hotel is slowly making its way into the 21st century. This place needed tons of attention and the new staff is chipping away at the 150 year old building one project at a time. New beds, floors, fresh paint, new carpet, new bar, new walkways , soon to be new staircase and murals . Still has its vintage charm, but has definitely upgraded from its dilapidated ruins. Still many projects and rooms to go, but you can tell their putting in the work to revive this piece of Catalina History. read more
