I had a wonderful experience at this hotel, but what truly set them apart was their exceptional honesty and customer service. After hopping cruise to Alaska, I realized I had left behind two very valuable pieces of jewelry--a diamond tennis bracelet and necklace. I was incredibly relieved when the hotel staff located both items and promptly arranged to have them shipped back to me. In a world where outstanding service can be hard to find, this team demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and genuine care for their guests. This is an overhyped and overpriced hostel. I wish I saw other Yelp reviews before booking. Other sites somehow list this as a 4+ star stay with good reviews. I don't know if they're bought, but if you appreciate return on your investment, DO NOT STAY HERE. There are other, cheaper, accommodations that will meet your hygienic needs. To charge extra for a room that's already prepped prior to check-in time is bizarre! But to do so knowing the conditions of the room is despicable. The hallways smells like musty seafood with lamps breaking. As for the room itself, it is falling apart. We stayed away from shelving because it is falling of the wall. You can't use AC, because there's a paper on the wall instructing you to use the wall unit instead (and that is disgusting, use clorox wipes!). The cork board on the wall is peeling off. The wall is disgustingly dirty and I can't explain how every part of the room is scuffed up - from walls, to doors, to furniture. Oh, god, the bathroom - there was unknown hair, a tub that desperately needed refinishing with the texture lifting at the bottom of my feet, it's poorly caulked, with dark spots (mold?), and rust. It's hard to feel clean in this space that you don't want to touch or leave your towel in. The charging outlets near the beds are also broken. Keep in mind this is what's obviously noticeable and I'm scared to look more for. But there's a fire pit though (sarcastic eyeroll) For the GM that replies to these reviews, stop saying you'll improve on people's experiences to placate them and DO BETTER - you've read enough of them by now. I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel other guests should be aware of my experience. We stayed in a second-floor room on the parking garage level, and it turned into a very unsettling stay. Late one evening, someone came up to our window and knocked several times. When I didn't respond, the individual apparently assumed the room was vacant and then used what looked like a scraping tool to try to pry open the window. I immediately pulled back the curtain and asked what he was doing, and he ran off. I called the front desk immediately to report the incident. I asked whether there were security cameras covering that area, and I was told there were and that security would be sent to investigate. The staff apologized, which I appreciated, but the experience left me questioning the property's security. If there are security cameras, they should be actively monitored. Access to the parking garage should also be restricted so only registered hotel guests can enter, as it appears far too easy for unauthorized individuals to access on that level. Unfortunately, that wasn't the only issue. The toilet in our room wouldn't flush, and we had to call maintenance to come repair it. On top of that, the Wi-Fi signal was extremely weak, and we had little to no internet access for much of our stay. I understand that no hotel is perfect, but guest safety should always be the highest priority. An attempted break-in outside our room, combined with the maintenance issues and unreliable Wi-Fi, made this a disappointing and stressful experience. read more

Room smelled like dead insects, like a storage room in a musty garage. Saw a few bugs too, most notably a large spider on the wall. It is just a plain dirty, old, musty, banged up, rip off dump (and not housekeeping's fault so don't blame them). The door lock did not work most of the time. The bed is a brick. The air conditioner was so loud it kept me up all night. The carpet is crusty. The bathroom smelled like sewerage. And after being charged $50 just to access my room 90 minutes before 4pm, even though the room was ready, they tried to gouge my wife for $2 bottled water. Then they hit you with a $35 amenity fee for basically nothing. A game room and a s'mores kit are not worth $35. They will nickel and dime you to death. Front desk is full of attitude too. We only stayed two nights, but the overall experience of the room was pretty terrible. The room had this musty moldy smell to it. The toilet did not work pretty much the entire time. They came to fix it and replaced a part but later that night it still didn't work. So we were battling the toilet issues both nights. There were blankets on the bed that were dirty. There was duck tape on the floor where the bathroom door meets the carpet , so basically something they didn't want to try to fix instead they just duct taped it. And in the shower the shampoo and conditioner bottles weren't even filled up, so the second night I had to call them that we had no shampoo. So they obviously didn't check for those things to be done before they put someone in a room. Overall not a good experience. read more

I had a good stay overall and the customer service was genuinely solid. Staff was friendly, helpful, and welcoming, which honestly goes a long way. Parking is $65 a day with in and outs included, so keep that in mind before you arrive. Location is cool but make sure you bring snacks or food because there really isn't much open late at night nearby. The hotel does not have a pool, but they do have a game room and an outdoor s'mores area, which is a nice touch. Just a heads up though, there is an automatic $30 game room fee added to your stay even if you do not use it. That should be way more clearly communicated. Also worth noting, there is no airport shuttle service offered. One thing that did concern me was finding rat traps placed near the nightstand and under the bed. While I understand pest prevention, it was unsettling to see this inside the room and definitely took away from the experience. Overall, it's a decent stay with good service and fun amenities, but there are extra fees and details you should know about ahead of time so there are no surprises. read more

Not terribly impressed, especially for the price. My husband booked a bay view room for our anniversary and what we got was a noise filled run down room. They thankfully agreed to move us, but all the bay view rooms were gone, so we got a partial. Part obstructed bay and courtyard view. Now I realize that the hotel didn't build that gigantic monstrosity of a Ferris wheel, but it kills what would have been a great view. The courtyard is LOUD, but they close that all down at10pm. Mixed feelings about this hotel. Was in town for a large event and stayed for a whole business week (Mon-Fri). Somehow ended up staying in three different rooms on the 4th floor. The location by the tourist wharf isn't bad at all. You can hear the sealions :-) The hotel has hip vibes with a courtyard with fire pits and games. The courtyard leads into a restaurant on the next street in the back with small bar etc. The hotel has thin walls (you can hear full conversations), no drink/snack option at night (when everything else is closed, but a sketchy 7-Eleven around the corner). The first night upon checkin the room had an awful musty smell, and windows are sealed so no fresh air is circulated. A\C is the older type near the window. Got another room but hotel is booked solid, so had to be moved to a third for the last two nights. Clear to see that the size, layout and bathroom size varies between the rooms. The room in the 41xx corridor was the best and the bathroom was a normal size compared to a converted closet :-) read more

Could hear every noise above us. Most disappointing part is trying to get ahold of anyone. First checked in, our sink was clogged. Had to wait to on the phone 25 minutes for the front desk. We left behind our 2 year olds stuffed animal we just got him from the Oakland zoo. (Our fault of course for forgetting it) I have called,at least 10 times to try to recover it but the front desk will not help with this, just transfers call to housekeeping who never returns the voicemails. Horrible communication. Filled out the lost stuff form as instructed weeks ago with of course zero reply. Super bummed and would NEVER stay there again. We checked in at 2pm & paid extra as requested - no problem. Got to room & AC not working. Call front desk & said someone would be up to look at it. Went to grab a bite to eat & came back and still no one had come to fix it. Called front desk, same statement that someone would be up to fix it. After another hour, went down to desk & they said they could change rooms but then noted we had a premium room and someone would be right up, that was over an hour ago. It has now 5 hours since we checked in with no one ever coming to fix AC! Customer service does not seem to be something they do very well. Don't stay here!!! So every single hotel I've ever stayed in during my decades of life on this planet will let you check in before 4PM and just notify you when a room is ready. For whatever reason, this hotel will charge you $75 for that privilege. They also won't setup your parking until you've checked in, so if you want to leave while waiting in the lobby for 6 hours, you have to pay the hourly parking rate. There's no elevator access to the lobby from the parking garage so you have to drag your luggage down a bumpy ramp and around the sidewalk to the street. This is our third time staying at Hotel Zephyr for business, and unfortunately, each visit has been more disappointing than the last. The biggest issue has been the customer service. The front desk staff has come across as unfriendly and, at times, even hostile. Instead of feeling welcomed, every check-in feels like we're inconveniencing them. Last weekend, we booked two rooms under my grandfather's name, and neither room was up to the standard we'd expect. It was obvious that surfaces hadn't been thoroughly cleaned, and overall the rooms didn't feel properly prepared for guests. Another frustrating issue is the constant additional fees. It feels like there are always unexpected charges that weren't clearly explained when booking, making the experience feel more like we're being nickel-and-dimed than valued as returning guests. This trip has been even more frustrating. Last time, we were told we couldn't check in until 4:00 p.m. unless we paid nearly $100 for an early check-in. We arrived at 4:00 p.m. as instructed, only to find a line nearly out the door, and we still had to wait close to an hour just to receive our room keys. Charging guests for early check-in while making them wait so long at the standard check-in time doesn't make sense and takes away valuable time from their stay. I really wanted to continue recommending this hotel because of its location, but after three stays with the same recurring issues, I can't honestly say I'd stay here again. Loved this hotel. This is a family friendly hotel. It's reasonably priced. For the years I've visited San Francisco and even lived nearby in the past, I never hung out in the touristy wharf zone. Totally loved it with my family. I have kids, and this place has tons of games inside and outside. They have fire pits and give you s'mores. The concierge helps you book tours. There's a difference between retro/eclectic vs lack of maintenance. Hotel Zephyr is definitely on the lack of maintenance side. My air conditioning sounded like there was a diesel truck revving its engine all night. When I let the front desk know, the maintenance worker came to my room and told me that I didn't need air conditioning overnight - I'm pretty sure that should be my decision not his. He also told me if I moved rooms I'd probably get one where the air conditioning didn't work at all. Also half of the power outlets in my room didn't work at all. They also wanted to charge me $30 to check in 1 hour early. I know that's their published policy, but it's not particularly customer obsessed. Lastly they never emailed me my bill after checkout and it took 1 week and multiple calls and emails to get it. read more

This hotel is not what it is advertised to be. It is not comfortable or cozy or family friendly. The beds are uncomfortable The rooms have zero sound proofing and at random our entire room would shake from something going on in the hotel. Our coffee maker's water reservoir was so disgusting that we couldn't use it. Upon arriving they screwed up our payment and it was a circus getting checked in even though I had already checked in online and even called ahead to make sure everything was handled and was assured that it was. The layout of the hotel is confusing with very little signage to explain. If you are someone who likes to relax with tv at the end of the night have fun flipping through 50 channels with no guide or menu whatsoever. No option to watch your own streaming services or use screen mirroring either The parking, which they charge $65 a night for, is cramped and impossible when the lot is full. The staff is rude and dismissive. No one was polite to me until I was standing in line to check out. I will never stay here again. read more

Hiddem gem of a hotel in SF. Conveniently located right beside the Fisherman's Wharf with its own paid parking structure which we highly recommend using even if its pricey. We originally booked for 2 nights and 3 days last fall. We arrived here around 8pm on a Saturday evening. The check-in process was straightforward. Our room was roomier than we initially thought. We also got a connecting room for our family which made our living space feel even bigger. Our two beds in our room were only full so they were a little small. The rooms had nautical themed decor which was very fun. Our room even had a fun magnetic dartboard. We love that our window faced the parking structure so we could see our car right there. The hotel itself is very eclectic with various fun art pieces and a variety of games and fire pits for you to wind down and enjoy. They offer complimentary s'mores for hotel guests. Overall stay here was good. We love how it's a 2 minute walk to the Fisherman's Wharf and a 5 minute walk to Pier 39. Super convenient. It's not a cheap stay but it's a great location. Overall, the Hotel Zephyr is a good place to stay when you're visiting SF. Pros: The hotel is walking distance to the Fisherman's Wharf, the Pier, the Aquarium, many restaurants and even the exploratorium if you don't mind a 15 to 20 minute walk. It has a huge game room indoors and outdoors with ping pong, pool, shuffle board, foozeball, connect four and more. They give you the makings for s'mores to roast outside from 4-10pm. They offer early check-in and late check out for a fee. The room was cute and there was a nice view. They did have a coffee maker, fridge, safe and working AC. Cons: It's pretty pricey- around $350 a night for a king room. And the room is pretty small. The walls were thin, so you could hear anyone in the hallway. The morning we were getting ready to leave and at 10:00 AM, the staff just entered our room with no warning to clean (wtf) lol. I wish the mattress had a topper or something- it was kinda hard. The pricing for how close it is to fisherman's wharf is amazing. What you save on your nightly rate will go straight to the amount you spend on their private parking though. Then again, parking in this area, in general, is very expensive! BUTTT, the good thing with this hotel is that their private parking is at least safer than parking on the street or at one of the lots that are available blocks away. Hotel Zephyr is pretty great for its price range; and this review is based on that mainly. If they started charging a higher rate, this review would be two stars instead. I say this because it's not a huge hotel hotel and so I would think that they would take better care of each individual room. It's four stories tall and offers a lot of great amenities, such as a game room, bonfires, and an attached bar out in the courtyard. Their rooms are on the smaller side, but still very reasonable. The main issue I have is with the lack of cleanliness and amount of water damage and gunk I saw around the bathroom and just the nooks and crannies of the room itself. If you don't look too hard or care that much; it's wonderful. It's just a bit disappointing because they have a lot of potential to be better. A small update/reno to the bathrooms would do them justice. Oh, and before I forget.. the employees here are great, and I had no complaints about them. Very accommodating: which is always a plus! I know I've emphasized this before, but I would definitely stay here again mainly because of the price and the distance from everything. They offer a lot of great deals on Groupon and perks sites; so make sure to also check those before booking. read more

5/5 stars for convenience, amenities, and staff. I enjoyed my recent stay at Hotel Zephyr, which the total for 2 nights cost around $700-$800. Location: Walking distance from tourist attractions like Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square. We felt pretty safe walking around once it got dark (around 7-8pm), but we didn't venture out past that. Staff: The hotel has a very modern and laidback vibe and the staff even wears casual clothes (hoodies and t-shirts). We had a good experience checking in and they let us store our luggages for a few hours after we checked out. Lobby and courtyard: plenty of seating inside the lobby to wait or do your work. There is a game room downstairs with ping pong, a photo booth, shuffle board, pool, and chess. We loved spending time here. Outside in the courtyard there are more games and fire pits where you can roast your marshmallows from your complimentary s'mores packet that you can redeem at the front desk. The courtyard is connected to a restaurant and bar. Room: Each room had a dart board on the wall, which we thought was really fun. The king sized bed was very comfortable but the 4 pillows were really uncomfortable. They're so large and puffy that it strains the neck. As someone who has traveled extensively I have stayed in some bad hotels and all the way up to the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan, while this hotel is definitely no where near the worst hotel it certainly was not worth $400 plus a night. We stayed in what was there most deluxe expensive room and I would not do it again. Was not worth the money spent for a hotel room thats less than average. The room was small and the bathroom was extremely small. Barely enough room to sit with your feet not touching the bathtub. The air conditioning ,beside the screens being filthy, was poorly designed with the curtains and the side of a wall mounted desk blocking the air flow. Small refrigerator. Refrigerator cabinet door difficult to open and had 2 inches of ice frozen over the cooling coils. Room had a balcony and a very nice view of the ocean and a Ferris wheel ride. The courtyard was nice ,the games and gas fire pits. But when we received our bill, there was a service fee for hotel amenities that should be included as part of the hotel service. INCIDENT DATE & TIME: July 8, 2025 approx. 11am _____________________ REVIEW: The staff (with the exception of the bellhop) were not welcoming or helpful. I highly recommend double-checking any information you're given by the front desk. In my case, multiple employees gave me the wrong information, and when I brought it up, the on-site manager was incredibly rude and dismissive. _____________________ DETAILS OF MY EXPERIENCE: I asked twice whether I needed to pay for parking and was told by two different staff members that I did not and I just needed to use the room key to open the gate. Upon check-out, I was surprised to see a ~$60 parking charge on my bill. Had I known, I would have parked on the street for free using my placard--there were plenty of spots available. When I brought this up at the front desk, the woman I spoke to had a condescending attitude and facial expression that clearly showed irritation. I even offered to show my permit, and instead of assisting me, she asked if I wanted to speak to the manager. The manager, "Vijay," handled the situation terribly. (Side note: I called afterward to confirm his name, and the woman on the phone seemed hesitant and paranoid about sharing that information--so I can't be sure I was given the real name.) His behavior included: 1. RAISING HIS VOICE UNNECESSARILY--both embarrassing and unprofessional. 2. REPEATEDLY SAYING, "I DOUBT THAT," as I calmly explained the situation--implying I was lying. 3. REFUSING TO TAKE ME SERIOUSLY even when I offered to show my placard permit to support my reasoning, just like the front desk woman. 4. IGNORING THE CORE ISSUE, which was that I had been misinformed by his staff--by doubling down with, "I doubt that again." 5. DISMISSING LOGIC--When I explained that it made no logical sense for me to pay for parking when free options were available, he again responded, "I doubt that." _____________________ BOTTOM LINE: The customer service--particularly from the front desk associate and the manager "Vijay"--was appalling. Even if the parking charge couldn't be waived, a professional manager would have acknowledged the communication breakdown and reassured me that the issue would be addressed with staff. Instead, he chose to be argumentative, dismissive, and unhelpful--raising his voice unnecessarily, creating an embarrassing scene, and asserting authority in a completely inappropriate way. I stayed in one of the premium waterfront rooms, and for the price I paid, I expected at least basic courtesy and professionalism. Sadly, that was not the case. _____________________ WOULD I RETURN? Absolutely love this hotel. I've stayed here a few times on my trips to SF. It is a really nice hotel, the rooms are unique and themed. They have a game room and some outdoor games as well. In the evening they give complimentary s'mores packs to do in the fires outside. Great hospitality and great location right next to pier 39! read more
