Luna had a great "staycation" at HT. She normally makes her way to our bed, even before our bedtime. Last night she never made it off the couch. Let me preface this by saying that I am a dog trainer, and I managed a training and daycare facility for six years. I asked every question under the sun at my dog's evaluation, and every answer was the one I was looking for. Additionally, my dog is not an 'easy' dog, he can be standoffish with strangers, but every staff member knew how to approach him without my having to comment, and he settled in really well. I appreciate especially their honesty when I asked if Arlo played with any other dogs - instead of lying to me and saying "of course!" without thinking, they explained to me that he needs to get used to a new environment and that "the play will come." That answer was stellar, and I feel comfortable knowing that staff will give me uncomfortable truths when they are needed rather than sugar coating their answers for a sale. I know my dog well, and their description of his behavior today was on point, I know for a fact that staff was watching him carefully and that makes me happy. I am glad to have a place to bring him now that I no longer work in the industry, it's a huge weight off of my shoulders. As to the reviews stating that the place smells - I have twice walked in during what seemed like rush hour and smelled nothing other than typical 'dog' smell, so I'm not sure what all that is about. read more

Thank goodness for Houndstown! My husky mix suffered from severe separation anxiety and was fearful of other dogs. Three months ago I brought my little Ruby in for the temperament test anxious that she wasn't going to pass, but from the second I handed the leash over and talking to the employees I felt more relaxed. I have used this facility before, when I lived in Port Jeff, for bathing for a previous dog on 3 occasions. Previously, I would have given them 3 stars for providing an adequate service. In this instance, however, I boarded my dog with them for one night beginning at 4 PM with the understanding that we would pick her up at 12 PM the next day. I would never repeat this experience and I would certainly never recommend this business to a friend again. The staff agreed to this time after performing a rudimentary "temperament" test that was at best useless and at worst dangerously incomplete as there was no testing of food or toy guarding behaviors involved. Additionally, they repeatedly refused my request to take her off the choke slip lead they had put her on and use my harness or martingale collar, telling me "The best way to get them to stop pulling and choking themselves is to let them choke." We arrived at noon today to find the front door locked with a sign that read "Lobby closed noon-2." None of the staff warned us that we would not even be able to pick up our dog at the agreed on time. We were left waiting for two hours before beginning our hour and a half ride home to a different part of NY. After 1 hour of waiting, a staffer walked out into the parking lot to get something from his car. We asked if it would be possible to pop in and pick up our dog and pay. He said no, that there was no manager available to check us out, and went back inside without a second look. No one came or went in the next hour to indicate there was any truth to his statement that the manager had to come back to help us. Finally, at 2 PM, the staff insisted on charging us a half day EXTRA fee because we were literally unable to pick her up at noon (to avoid incurring such a fee) due to THEIR policy on an apparently 2-hour lunch break. To clarify, our dog stayed at their facility for 22 hours and we were charged a day and a half fee ($67) because they neglected to tell us they were, in fact, NOT open to customers at noon, the time we had agreed to get our dog. We asked them to reconsider and were denied several times. To add insult to this, we left and had to actually turn around and go BACK when we realized they returned our dog's belongings without either of her stainless steel bowls. The customer service here was despicable and we will be disputing charges with our credit card company as that seems to be the only way to remedy any of this situation. Edit in response to the owners comment to me: I'm sorry you felt the need to publicly call me a liar. We are of course disputing the fee your company has charged us. I will note that I didn't see a sign advising customers that audio and video recordings are kept of all interactions in the lobby--that is highly unprofessional if that is indeed the case. Furthermore, it was a large, Caucasian, man with blond, shaved hair who took our dog and let her choke while pulling on the slip lead. If you have video of this, you will surely see it and hear me asking him to use either her collar or harness. If he had introduced himself to me, I would give you his name specifically. Looking back, I wish the circumstances of our visit to LI had allowed us to change our minds and not keep our dog at your facility. As you mentioned, there are many other similar businesses all over NY. I brought mine to yours because I had trusted the service before. You may be sure I will never make that mistake again and will choose one of the many other options available, as you suggested. read more

We board our dogs frequently at Hounds Town for anywhere from a couple of nights to ten days. Buddy and Mattie are two energetic Jack Russells who LOVE their visits to Hounds Town. In fact, we have to pack their bags in the car secretly while they are in the back yard because if they see us, they know they are going to Hounds Town and try to get out of the house and jump in the car. They know the way now, and when we turn the corner onto Bicycle Path they start jumping around with glee! Thank you, Hounds Town, for providing an awesome place for our dogs. We absolutely LOVE Hounds Town. Each and every time our dog Abbie comes back so happy and exhausted from playing all day. It is evident that the employees care about each and every dog and love them just as much as we do. They are very convenient and always are willing to take my last minute request for an overnight stay. We recently tried their grooming services and could not be happier. Abbie came back so fluffy and clean and her coat looked beautiful. It is so reassuring to know that we have a safe place to take our dogchild when we need to go away. I have to say I am very surprised at all the positive reviews this place has. I called yesterday to inquire about boarding my dog and made an appointment for today. I walked in and was overpowered by the smell of urine. While standing there, a girl that worked there was talking with another customer with a dog. She didn't greet me at all but ignored me and almost seemed annoyed that I was there. After a few minutes she finished up with the customer and walked off without saying a word to me. Another worker came up to me after a couple minutes and then left to answer the phone. I just got such a bad feeling about this place, I left. The customer that she was helping was actually nicer to me than she was. Oh well, that's an hour of my day I won't get back.. To reply to your response.... you are correct I drove from Manorville -so yes 30 min there and 30 min back. I was not there long to realize it was not a good fit for me. I was NOT greeted by the girl in the lobby as she was talking w another customer. I was actually confused as to how to get in the gate and no one said to just push it open. I have no problems with waiting, however I felt invisible. The girl in the lobby didn't say anything to me other than, "can you pull your dog away, this dog is nervous". I pulled my dog back but he was extremely nervous as well. The other girl came over to me and apparently wasn't even aware I had an appointment. But at least she was nice and said she would be right with me. I just got a bad taste in my mouth from the whole experience. I am looking for loving place to keep my dog and as a prospective customer I do not like the way I was treated at all. I will find a better place for him, I am sure of it. We have a super energetic black lab/pit bull mix puppy (only 1 year old) he frequents daycare at Houndstown about 2x a week and does overnight stays when my family and I are out of town. He loves going there as when we pass certain landmarks he starts crying/whining in excitement and can't get out of the car quick enough to get inside and see all his friends! read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE Hounds Town in Port Jeff Station!! I bring my doberman "Doc" there and I have never had issues. I get paid every two weeks and they allow me to pay them when I get paid. My dog is more well behaved and actually runs to go inside, he can't wait to get there! The best part is that my dog sleeps better and is better with my other dogs. The staff are always friendly and kind, and I have never had any issues. I TOTALLY recommend Hounds Town to anyone who truly cares about their dog, I am not the kind of person that would leave my dog with just anyone!
