An escape room created by passionate escape room enthusiasts? YES, PLEASE! We had decided to check out Hour to Exit because they had decent reviews and we were trying to make the most of an "upstate" NY trip. We did the Elude the Illusionist room with no expectations and left thoroughly impressed. We booked an 8pm game on a Saturday, so the positive for parking is that it is ample and free. We freaked out a bit because the streets before the intersection were pretty crowded, but when we walked near the room, we realized that we had more options than we thought. Elude the Illusionist is created by Duane, one of the co-owners, who has done so many escape rooms. The room is appropriately challenging and the puzzles were enjoyed by even the most experienced escape room enthusiast in our group. I liked that the puzzles utilized a variety of skills and "lock" types (magnets and locks). The puzzles also matched with the magic theme, which is also more enjoyable. I have two minor critiques of the room. They have two puzzles that are based on lengths of things that are not the most obvious differences. Fortunately, there are other ways to solve those puzzles, but I think it could be a little more clear. Second, a previous reviewer mentioned that the room was not linear, but I think after the first major task, it does get linear. This is not the biggest issue because they allow private games, but that means a smaller group will work better! Honestly, the best thing about this room are the owners, Duane and Brittney. If you are an enthusiast, you NEED to do this room and speak with them! They are incredibly experienced and offered us a lot of other suggestions of rooms to do. We plan to come back and do their new room Robbin Tiffany's, but we hope that they are able to create another room similar to Elude the Illusionist in the future as well. read more

My daughter had her 15th Birthday Party here. We rented the private party room and had 6 of her friends join her in the Escape room. Every employee was super professional and friendly. We had an amazing experience and a few of Kaitlyn's friends want to do their birthday there as well. I highly recommend this place!! read more

A friend and I went today and had a wonderful time. This was a first for both of us, so we chose the easiest room. I won't spoil anything by giving details, but I will say that the staff was friendly, energetic, and very helpful. Finding the clues was challenging enough that we needed hints, but we managed to find a few on our own. I'll definitely recommend this to neighbors and return for more challenges! While driving to this, our first Escape Room experience, my wife and I got into a nasty argument about how to enter the location in Google - all the way there. So, contemplating an experience where she and I were going to try to figure things out together as a "team," didn't bode too well! Well, just the opposite happened. From the moment Dwayne explained the rules of the room, my wife and I clicked. We split the room into halves and swept 360 degrees in opposite directions, finding clues and having a blast. I won't say we were very proud of ourselves. Frankly, we missed a lot of obvious clues and bungled others. But Dwayne, acting as the unseen referee, nudged us along, gave us clues WITHOUT MAKING US FEEL DUMB, and basically established a fine balance between fun and frustration - with the equation always beingn +10 on the fun side. After we'd finally escaped (with just seconds to spare), Dwayne, who'd created the room with his partner, helped us understand the passion and incredible creativity that goes into making Escape Rooms. The post-game conversation was almost as fascinating as the game itself. My wife, myself and all the folks we could imaging bringing with us the next time, will surely agree: Escape Rooms are the best escape - and a hell of a lot of fun! read more

We did the illusion room and we had such a blast. The theme follows through to every clue and there isn't any random puzzles. Everything just fits. Run, do not walk, to this place! I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and we did the Escape the Illusionist room. Our game master Melissa (I think her name) was amazing. She gave great clues, explained the game well and was really kind. She really knew her stuff! The room itself was so much fun. The details were amazing. The room we had was set in the 1930's and had great decor related to that, and also magic. I will not give away any surprises but the room exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend Hour to Exit. I've gone there for a second time and it was awesome! My first time was in a dorm room which was a bit complicated but had some help from the staff. My second time today, I was in the Illusionist room, which was great! As I was figuring out clues with help from the staff, I figured out how to open the door to the next room and the next room! I believe what also made it easier for me was the experience in the dorm room. I've learned not to overthink. I would definitely visit again! read more

My girlfriend and I are escape game enthusiasts and we decided to make a stop at New Rochelle to try out HTE (Hour to Exit). We did a 830pm Pandora's Box room and 930pm Elude the Illusionist room back to back. Although it was very last second, they gladly accommodated us and we appreciated it! Pandora's Box: Non-linear room and everyone is kept busy. Multiple things to work on in the room but teamwork is still key. Room was chilly but we'll take that over a steamy room any day! While Brittney, our amazing game master and owner of HTE was going over game rules, the room interacted with what she was saying which was pretty cool. Room atmosphere, decor, props, and puzzles were on point and was extremely fun. Escaped with 10 min to spare! Elude the Illusionist: WAY different from Pandora's Box, non-linear, and follows a story line somewhat. Again, everyone will be working on something, a lot of detail is involved, and a bunch of fun interactions. Nice mixture of tech and traditional locks were in the room and the room looked well-thought out. We were immersed in the setting of the room and it made the experience that much more fun. Escaped with 10 min to spare as well! Street parking available until 12am ($1 an hour) or in the parking lot across the street. Also, the actual entrance is on North Street! All in all, being a new escape room, it's a very nice addition to New Rochelle. Only a 20 min drive from NYC or 40 min train ride from GCT, I recommend making your way to HTE for your next escape room adventure. read more

My family & I tried Pandora's Box today. I had never done an escape room before but my 2 teenagers have & they thought this was not as good as the other ones they've done. The decor was mediocre at best & the locks themselves were difficult to open with the correct codes. Kind of boring. Maybe The Illusionist is better. This was my families second escape room experience. The first time was at a location in CT. We absolutely loved the everything about it. Duane and his employees were super friendly and helpful and they took some time to get to know us when we finished. We made it out on time, but it was close. We did an intermediate level room because we had two ten year old kids with us, but my daughter was a superstar and was very helpful, so next time we will do the more difficult rooms. I guess the way to compare escape room companies with each is by their difficulty and creativeness and this had tons of both. The one negative experience we had was a fine for parking in the Stop and Shop parking lot. I would describe the parking experience as a trap, so be warned. There is a municipal lot in the same building, so don't make the same mistake we did. I would highly recommend this business. read more

We did have some trouble solving some of the puzzles but we we were given enough clues to help us along. We did escape with 3 minutes remaining! :) We are definitely planning to come back! I took a group of 11 teens to this escape the room for a birthday party. It was perfect ! For one hour, they had to work together, figure it out and get out. They managed to escape with 4 minutes to spare. They had some help from Dwayne who was watching a monitor to make sure they were all doing ok and would guide them if needed. Pizza and cake in a private room and they all left giggling. HUGE SUCCESS! Highly recommend for a tween/teen birthday. read more

Definitely one of the better escape rooms I've been to! It was such a great experience coming here. Right off the bat the staff was SO friendly and accommodating. You have to pay for street parking here so I was able to give my ticket to the staff and some extra cash Incase my meter ran out and they were willing to add extra time for me! Also super helpful with the hints. While we were in progress of our game one staff chimed in from time to time when we seemed lost and made the experience a lot more fun. I like that it was also a series of rooms to get through rather then just one. It really helped the story lines and I've been recommending it to everyone around me to take the drive down here to give it a try! Me and a group of friends tried one of the harder level rooms and barely made it out with any time to spare. Really helped us work on our team work and was a great experience. read more
