As the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover. That is certainly true of House of Como! One review I saw said that if you see it when it's not open, you'd think it's an abandoned building. I can't argue with that. The blown out sign out front, dingy looking building and year-round Christmas decor can make you think twice about going in. But trust me - you want to go in! Once inside the kitschy Christmas decor, dining tables that are slightly too high for the blue-vinyl-covered chairs, and generally '70s feel make the place feel charming and comfortable rather than dated. Ok, so what about the food? We were thinking of sharing a t-bone, but our server, Denver, said it's about 2 1/2 lbs and we thought that would be way too much steak for 2 of us, so we opted for the "2 thick cut pork chops". Denver recommended that we start with their Arabian salad, so we did. We also ordered lyonnaise potatoes and green beans as sides. The salad was great. It comes with flat bread and is dressed with a lemon garlic dressing. A great start to the meal. The pork chops - "thick cut" is definitely an understatement! They were gigantic. They were also nicely seasoned and cooked to perfection - just the slightest pink inside, almost imperceptibly which left them incrediby juicy but with an amazing seared crust. They were easily the best pork chops I've ever had! The lyonnaise potatoes were golden, brown and deliciously crispy on the outside and pillowy soft inside. The green beans were probably the weakest part of the meal. They were pretty much typical mid-western cooked to death veg. But actually that was somewhat comforting in a way too. We both had very low expectations going in. House of Como far exceeded them and is easily now one of our favorite local restaurants! read more

Evansville Indiana has some real gems but House of Como is my favorite go to while traveling. It's filled with Christmas decorations, served on paper placemats, and cash only. If you order steak medium well or well done I wouldn't recommend it.....they serve ultra premium cuts of beef and pork and they should be cooked to highlight the quality. Well is you like old hole in the wall places with a Christmas theme year round then Como is a must try. Serivice: Well it was slow, I mean slow. Had to flag the dude down a couple times to get first drink, 2nd drink and forget about another. Oh, then paying I had to track him down. Also, this place is cash only. which is crazy now a days. Food: Very good, the salad with flat bread; different, but amazing. You roll it up like a burrito. Salad taste similar to Olive Garden. I also had the bacon wrapped filet mignon. They put a crust on top of the steak, I think a mayonnaise base, but added a very unique texture and taste. I'll be back for the food for sure and we can revisit the service. read more

It's just great to find a restaurant with as much personality as House of Como when chain restaurants become ever more dominant. I had a great meal here--a very tender filet mignon, baked potato, and at the insistence of the fabulous waitress, the house salad with Como's famous dressing and Arabian flatbread. Delicious. No, it doesn't look like much from the outside situated as it is on a rather forlorn strip of garages and such, not too mention its larger-than-life sign with several missing letters. But on the inside, the ambiance is warm, friendly, and inviting. And the meat is high quality. I wish I'd gotten the name of my waitress (the slim woman with the bright blonde curls); she made this first-time visitor to the restaurant feel right at home. If you prefer a cold, sterile environment where you could be in any city at all, go seek out someplace like Ruth's Chris. But if you want great food and service and a one-of-a-kind memorable experience, House of Como is for you. read more

I'm not sure if this restaurant is trying establish itself as the greatest prank of all time, but if so, mission accomplished. I mean, wow. Where to even start? Brought my wife her for her birthday tonight. Our waitress was an elderly lady. Very sassy. Could not have been any less helpful. Ask for recommendations. Her: "I don't know, I don't eat that!". Before she left the table after taking or order, she asks, "Would you like to try some of our world famous salad?"... uh, sure? Spoiler alert: worst up sell of all time. The salad was literally tiny diced onions, teeny bell peppers, lettuce and a ton of dressing that really didn't belong in the mix. It was served with "bread", more in the shape of a wrap. Total disaster happening to my taste buds. Whatever, we await our meal anxiously. She ordered ravioli. What she received was ricotta cheese, the blandest, most watery tomato sauce I've ever tasted and garlic bread that was hoping the butter on it would cover up for its lack of taste. My strange meat patty smelled almost worthy of rancid and tasted disgusting. Like outdated, heap meat. By this point I was pretty discouraged, but then two more cherries on top of this disaster-shake. We ask for the check and in (literally) 15 minutes it took her to write it out, the couple next to us, comes to a realization that we came to just as they did. They don't accept card. Cash or check. What the heck? Whatever, I'll drive to an ATM. I leave withdraw cash and get back. Guess what? Still no check. We finally receive our check and then the final ball drops. That "world famous salad"? NINE DOLLARS! The garlic bread you assumed would be complimentary? FOUR DOLLARS! The two cans of Coke you went through because we aren't a real restaurant and don't have an actual soda fountain? Arabian Specials Two friends and I decided to go here for dinner last Friday night to celebrate my birthday. This use to be the place my family and friends went to celebrate special occasions. I moved away in 2008 and returned to Evansville in 2016. I realize the original owner (George) passed away a long time ago and thought his wife and daughters had continued to run the place. I can hardly express how disappointing the food was. We ordered the ever popular Arabian salad & bread to start. It was plain iceberg lettuce and did not taste the same. I had the Stuffed Cabbage which was very bland. Both my friends ordered the same thing, a shrimp dish they were told was like Scampi. What they received looked like a commercial breaded shrimp that was cooked, then tossed with some butter and garlic...which kinda took the breading off the shrimp. That was then just placed on top of some spaghetti noodles in a bowl. Perhaps their steaks, chops and lamb chops are still good - but we weren't willing to pay their high prices. Needless to say, it is no longer a place I consider "special" and I will not return. read more

The House of Como is a solid option for steak and pork chops in the Evansville area. The place is old and has Christmas decorations up year round, all of which adds to it's charm. My visit to the House was business related. So, when I arrived, I parked up at the bar to await the rest of my party. The beer and liquor selection is very limited... a few of my first options were not available. I ended up settling on a bottled Bud light. On to the food... the waitress described the filet as being very similar to what you would get at Ruth's Chris. That's all I had to hear... filet it was for me. The rest of my party had the lamb chops and the rack of lamb. The meal began with a salad... the house special here is the "Arabian" salad, which is pretty tasty. It's a pretty basic salad with a vinaigrette dressing, tomatoes, etc. I thought it was good, but not worthy of heavy praise, contrary to how a few of the others at the table felt. The filet is a fantastic value... I opted for the "large" which is about 9-10 ounces or so, in my estimation (not indicated on the menu)... for only $26. The big ole piece of meat is served atop a slice of white bread, which soaks up the juices and tastes delicious later. As far as the steak goes... it wasn't a Chris's steak. It wasn't sizzling in butter and had a different array of seasoning on it. I enjoyed it well enough, and found it worthy of a $26 price tag, but it doesn't rank up there with the premium steakhouses I frequent in my travels. Then again, those places charge at least double for the same cut... Now... the lamb chops. They looked FANTASTIC. I was very sorry that I didn't get them. For this reason alone, I will be back to the HoC on my next visit to Evansville. Another interesting quirk... when it came time to pay, we were told that they accept cash only. On a $300 bill, that left us a bit surprised... it just doesn't occur to me anymore that there are places out there that still don't take plastic. The owners were very accommodating and worked out a deal for us to be invoiced for the dinner and pay later by check. They should probably tell people before they order that it's cash only. BOTTOM LINE: Cool place... apparently, an Evansville establishment. Medium steak, GREAT lamb chops, cash only. read more
