Haven't been to Darmstadt Inn for months, surprised to see how much it has declined Waited for at least 10 minutes for a server to arrive to get our drink order, she was the only server there, however she only had two tables and they were both done. Four people at the bar, she (Holly) refused to even acknowledge we were there as she just kept talking to the people at the bar. In other circumstances I would have got up and left and probably should have. Had to use the bathroom while I was there, toilet was "full". Tried to flush it, but it wouldn't flush. Washed my hands with watered down hand soap and left. Stromboli was ok, paid extra for mushrooms, they were not fresh like they once were but canned. A restaurant should have to pay you for eating canned mushrooms. No restaurant that is serious about their food should serve canned mushrooms. German potato salad was microwaved Drank my first beer, had to sit without one while we waited for Holly to come back around. After the bathroom incident, kinda started looking around and the holes in the floor, spider webs, dirty walls. Realized how unsanitary and grotesque the place actually was. Could see on the kitchen when the door was open, one cook had a bandana on, but a boy looked like he had an Afro not hat, young girl no hat. There use to be a few server/bartenders there one with a limp and a knee brace who would never let you sit without a beverage and actually hustle to earn a tip. That didn't happen today. Maybe it was a wise decision onto other for months. Will he months before we go back. Having been in the hospitality industry for a while myself I am a generous tipper. Have even left a $100 tip at Christmas time for server with knee brace, I left 10% today. Probably should have left less. Server only cared about people at bar and running her big mouth. To many good small businesses at to waste money on a dirty, unattended, uncared for out of the way place! I also never leave negative reviews... But this was warranted! read more

I'm solidly at a 3.5, but going to round up since that's not an option. It was OK grub with excellent service. Very casual eatery with what I'd call an old roadside cafe vibe. Sandwiches, fried chicken, pizza, chicken fried steak, etc. Wooden tables with paper placemats, and a bar area with a bit of separation from the dining area. Our server was great. She got to our table quickly and got our drink orders. She was back in a flash with those and jotted down our food selections. The food came out in about 5 minutes! I got the cheesesteak sandwich and my wife got the grilled pork tenderloin. My cheesesteak was right off the grill-piping hot. It had a reasonable amount of meat, a few veggies and ample cheese. Nothing remarkable, but decent and filling. My wife's tenderloin was pounded very thin, tender, and again just fine. We did get a side of German Potato Salad. It was the highlight of the food - very tasty-hot, authentic, with a good vinegary tang. Prices are extremely reasonable, the service great, and if you're looking for a quick bite or comfort food, it's worth a try. read more

My wife and I have been eating at Rick's Darmstadt Inn since we moved to Evansville 15 months ago. It was recommended by a friend and coworker. The fried chicken is exceptional!! It's the best fried chicken that I've ever eaten. 1/4 white chicken with a baked potato and salad is my favorite!! It take awhile to fry the chicken but it's always worth the wait!! While all the staff is helpful, Jamie is particularly attentive and sweet. Whenever we visit on Friday evening, our weekends have a wonderful beginning. read more

Darmstadt Inn. Great old fashioned vegetable soup---the kind your favorite Grandma used to make...only better!And the sort of wonderful, juicy burgers that Dave Thomas could only dream about. An old, old building where the floor shakes when anybody walks by. You might say it was colorful, except it's all brown and very dark. Quaint, maybe. The other end of the spectrum from Eddie Merlot's. Somebody just fired up the juke box and they're playing a favorite -- country. It's a work boots, jeans and baseball cap kind of place...Well worth the drive and you'll want to come back. read more

What a gem of a place stopping here to get off the beaten path used Yelp to find a little place to grab a bite. Damn this place is perfect old school bar restaurant with great food and the service was so very friendly. Had the sirloin steak and it was done to perfection! We had the shrimp basket and it had way more shrimp than one can eat the shrimp was the popcorn variety fried to perfection. And the breaded tenderloin was of their own batter and not bought with a thick piece of tenderloin. Had the German potatoes and they were just like grandma made! Will come back for sure! This is a tough one. I love the Darmstadt area, and when I eventually (someday) move back to Indiana, this is where I'll live, as I refer to it as "God's Country." Unfortunately though, the new ownership has employees that don't resemble the typically friendly demeanor of Darmstadt residents; therefore, this 5 star establishment (if based on food, beer prices, and ambience) is now a 3 star joint. Everytime I'm in town, my Dad and I generally come in, exclusively to sit at the bar. Fishbowls of draft beer for just south of 3 bucks. Uh yeah, sold! Good comfort (and bar cuisine) food, that will match any bar in town, as far as quality, and price. Yep, sold. Darmstadt Inn. A real bar, with character. Really good food, decent liquor selection, and damn good beer prices, makes this place a rare gem. If only they could hire decent servers, and bartenders. Whenever visiting family, I try my best to make time to visit the Darmstadt Inn - and I am greatly disappointed if I am unable to do so! I lived a couple of miles from this neighborhood bar/restaurant for several years, and my family and I had many good meals and drinks here. On a recent visit to town, I was able to take my kids here for the first time since we had moved out of state, when they were small children. Neither of them remembered much about eating here when they were kids, except they remembered all of the mounts on the wall, and the old hard wood floors! It was fun to take them back now that they are adults. On the evening we were here, they had a live band playing.....something I don't remember them having several years ago. The band was quite good, and did a great job of engaging the crowd. The place was packed....people waiting a long time for seats. Our party of ten was lucky to hit two tables just as people were leaving. The food was great, as it always is. I had the fried chicken livers and a spinach salad. they are known for their spinach salad with warm bacon dressing, and it was just as I remembered it. Fresh spinach, onion, hard boiled eggs, plenty of fresh bacon bits, and a wonderful homemade bacon dressing served warm and on the side. The chicken livers were perfect.......crispy and not greasy, with cream gravy on the side. Others in our party had the german bologna sandwich and cheeseburgers. All had excellent reviews. This is definitely a neighborhood bar - most of the regular patrons live in the Darmstadt community. It has a wonderful cozy atmostphere, where everyone is friendly. Oh, one more thing - in the past they have had a WONDERFUL Christmas Eve breakfast. We went one year when in town, and it was absolutely fabulous. Sorry to say, we just left the Inn and were very dissatisfied. The soup I was served was cold (bean soup) I asked that it be returned and warmed. After waiting a ridiculous amount of time i had to ask for it. When they returned with it, it looked like it had been in a dehydrator, (I could not believe the server had the nerve to place it in front of me) I refused it. I love the old time atmosphere of this place. Interesting history: a hardware store in the first half of the 20th century and a tavern since. Authentic feel. Too bad the food is lame. I came in for lunch today with my mother, and we both ordered the catfish fillet. It was a piece of fried, bland, undercooked fish. Really not good at all. The green beans seemed clearly from a can and simply warmed up, and the mashed potatoes were quite institutional and fake. Just poor quality food all the way around. However, we were entertained by one of the employees who went to great lengths to share an endless story of her family with no seeming awareness of burdening us with her personal problems. The food was great, but the waitress could have used an attitude adjustment. We came after the lunch crowd and we think she had had all she could handle. Not very friendly at all. We had asked if they had jalapeño cheese fries and her reply was no! So we asked if they could just add jalapeños to the bacon cheese fries on the menu and she said yes! I went here on New Years Eve 2013 with some members of my fraternity (Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia) who were in town at our national headquarters that is located just down the road. This was my first time here. The restaurant has an old-timey charm, from the big game trophies on the walls to the peanut shells on the floor. The waitresses were nice and very accommodating to our large group. As for the food- I had the second best pizza I've ever had in my life (2nd only to one I had in New York City)! I got beef, pepperoni and mushroom. The beef comprised an entire layer of the pizza with the pepperoni and mushroom as another layer on top, and with the cheese as the top layer. The ingredients therefore become more than just "toppings" on this pizza. I split a large with a friend, which only cost $9.50 total! I would normally expect to pay $16-$20 for a pizza that good! I plan on visiting the fraternity HQ again, and will certainly be back to the Darmstadt inn! read more

I dont know why meg v only gave three stars... she really didnt say anything negative. the wildlife on the walls are left from the previous owner. the only item on the menu that i would stay clear of would be the gizzards.. tried them twice and not good... everything else i would say is great for the price and the location. normally have great service unless happen to hit right after a large groups comes in. I would highly recommend if you can deal with plain tavern setting.. its not ruth cris or mortons so dont expect it. read more
