I've been going to Switch a little over 2 months now. I'm a complete beginner, overweight, almost…read more40, and had absolutely no experience in any type of MMA, team sports, or group exercise, so if I can do it, you can too. Switch offers a wide variety of classes. They have a gym on one side with strength and conditioning classes, and MMA and boxing classes on the other, they sell gear, the bathrooms are clean, the music is great, plenty of parking, and I think they have a shower. The classes are consistent and run throughout the early morning into the evening, which makes it easy to find something that fits your schedule. The best part of all is the people, the coaches and the students. You really do run into every type of person there, and everyone is welcome. I genuinely feel that. You just have to show up with respect and a little dedication. I've had the pleasure of learning from Coach Marvin, Coach Andre, and Coach Rob, who owns the gym, he is definitely doing something right. They all have so much to offer. The 7am Muay Thai Coach, Coach Marvin has an incredible eye for detail and can explain or show technique in different ways depending on what clicks for you. He doesn't just explain how to do something, he explains why, which shows how deep his knowledge really is. He also has thoughtful things to say beyond technique and understands that everyone comes in for different reasons, which makes his perspective really valuable. Rob and Andre have also coached early morning Muay Thai, and they're both extremely talented and give you personal pointers. It's cool getting a mix of styles, but what stands out is that they all build off each other's teaching and give each other credit. There's a lot of respect there. All 3 make it fun and motivating. It's a perfect balance of work, discipline, and even humor. You walk out feeling accomplished and better than when you walked in. The environment stays positive. I haven't met one rude person. Everyone has been cool, understanding that I'm new, and willing to offer support or advice. Watching the more experienced students drill together gives you something to work toward. At first there may be disomfort like youre slowing people down but everyone starts somewhere. Many great things in life take the most effort. They offer free trials, what do you have to lose?

From the day I started, every coach was patient and attentive, even in the larger classes. They taught me fundamentals very patiently and offered encouragement every step of the way. As I improved, they gave me more advanced, tailored guidance. It's clear that they encourage kindness towards others, hard work, AND fun. Coach Rob often has a large class with varying skill levels, yet he makes time to help everyone individually. In just one hour classes, he still manages to give every person a bit of personal attention. He even took extra time after a couple of classes to give me pointed, informed direction that made a huge impact on my progress. Coach Toby is the best, and I feel lucky to get to learn from him! He's super patient, pays great attention to technique, and pushes me in a way that's kind and constructive. Coach Panda is a smart fighter, sees exactly where I need to make improvements, and is super encouraging. Coach Marvin is also super helpful, hardworking, and patient. The entire staff at the gym has positive vibes, and all the coaches push you without putting you down. Every class I take (which is every weekday!) I feel like I gained something, and I get excited about the improvements I'm making. I've never been this excited to go to the gym every day, and it doesn't hurt that everyone else who goes there is kind and supportive, too! Will be going for as long as I can.

I'M BACK! My journey began in 2010/11 when I moved to San Diego and wanted to find a boxing gym to…read morejoin. I came to American Boxing because it was close to where I lived and I stayed (for 3 years!) because of the coaching I received. I boxed with Coach Dave for about a year before he recruited me to try Muay Thai. The rest of my time there I trained 6 days a week in both sports! I loved every second. Coach Dave is legit. He's a good trainer, doesn't take any bullsh*t, and pushes you to be your best. My goal was to advance in the sport, improve my technique, and get in the best shape of my life. And I accomplished all of those things with Coach Dave. I personally like his teaching style. He's big on technique and explaining the "why" behind it and giving you great insight into the bigger picture of what you are learning. But what I liked most is he has this ability to push me and remove any obstacles (mostly mental) I could come up with to not push myself. It's like he knew what I was capable of even though I didn't. It also helped that Dave walked his talk. He's a champion, he can do all (and more) of what he is asking you to do. For years he pushed me and for years I excelled. I was strong, slim, fast, conditioned, and had abs for days. Then, I had to move away. :-( Through the years I have trained at other Muay Thai gyms always searching for a new "Dave." Trying to find a gym and a trainer that actually TRAINS me. Not someone who just goes through the motions or puts me through an aerobic workout class. It's been years since I trained with Dave and just recently he reached out letting me know he is offering on-line training and I didn't even blink. I was training with him the very next day! I am back with my favorite trainer to TRAIN the sport I love and get back into fighting shape. I have a ways to go but I honestly don't trust anyone else to help me get there the way I trust Dave. I feel like I lost a part of me when I left American Boxing and I now have a second chance to get it back!

I tried a free class to see if I wanted to to join a while…read moreback. I chose not to join. My interaction with the owner, Dave was exactly like many other reviewers. He's a walking, talking ego. His behavior was rude, immature and actually quite irrational. Not sure why he would behave like that toward people who were going to be longtime members of his gym, but now that I've read some of the other reviews it doesn't surprise me at all. Don't waste your time even checking this place out. With an owner like that they'll be out of business soon anyway, and you can be sure there won't be any membership refunds when they do.
