I made the mistake of going somewhere else for a haircut (I won't name names, but it rhymes with "Scrim Sheen") and one of the ladies there really messed up my haircut bad. I had asked for a simple fade, but she left it way too long in top and didn't blend it well at all. I had family photos in less than an hour and was starting to really worry that this horrible haircut would be immortalized for all time. I ran to House of Flair in a panic, and the guy there got me in the chair right away. He did an amazing job of fixing my previous hair dresser's mistakes, and had me out the door with a wife approved haircut in no time at all. And at about 75% of the cost of my previous cut! Come with good intentions. This place may not be upscale, the most modern or smell good but it sure does the job! I came in for a relaxing cheap haircut and that is exactly what I received. This is a nice local certified hair stylist who has served the area for many years. Based on what the owner/hair stylist says she has been in operation for 50 years!! This is very impressive considering the fact that stores tend to change over time. The lady was born and raised in Humboldt. She claims to be Portugués from the Azores area!! Incredibly awesome!! The reason why this was a divine haircut was because for $25 the owner ended up washing and cutting my hair and was willing (if you ask) was willing to blow dry it and cut what you wanted off. The barber appeared serious and when asked questions he answered with simple responses and hardly looked my direction as if I was an off putting sight! Believe me I can be that way too but I will go out of my way to make small talk in return or voice that I am tired etc. Eventually the haircut was complete and I paid, (debit) headed out the door and when I turned over to look in the barber's direction he had the BIGGEST smile (whereas earlier he was dead Pan serious) on his face and told me "it looks so good on you" I smiled and said "thanks, it was hard to choose but I did it" strange, but okay. Update: My female partner came here and the owner told her many religious God related comments. We were not offended but for those who do not wish to discuss religion keep this in mind. I got a fantastic haircut from Vivian, who was sweet as can be. Would highly recommend getting a haircut here to others in the area.

So we were looking for a good barber that can provide a stylish San Diego cut for my son. After looking at several Yelp reviews we were scared, very scared about the lack of barbers and styles in the area. We bit the bullet and gave this place a shot.. When we walked in it was like walking into the 70's wait maybe the 80's including the cute little older woman's hairstylist outfit... After talking to the barber Danny he was very honest on what he could do and not do, which we totally appreciated! We showed him a picture and he did a great job! We walked out happy! When my son attends Humboldt in the fall I know he can go to Danny to give him a great haircut! Lesson learned "Don't judge a book by its cover". So we came back to get a haircut and the barber was clearly unhappy and def not looking to be bothered by work- He had one person in his chair and another waiting. I asked how long could we come back and he replied you can try... we called an hour later was told to come in now and when we walked in he rolled his eyes??? This place is a hidden treasure. I didn't have an appointment so I walked in and she penciled me in for that same day. When I came back she was finishing up cutting a man's mohawk and talking about surfing with him. She greeted me & asked me how I'd like my hair, gave me suggestions, and ultimately gave me the look I wanted. She asked about the length, style, how much flair I wanted, etc. The best part of this beside the service was the price. $20 for a shampoo/conditioner, hair cut, and final styling! She takes credit cards, cash & local checks. She has been at this location for 40 years! Great service, experienced, and absolutely the best price. Give her a try. read more

I finally found a place to get a great short haircut in Humboldt! Yay! I've lived here for 9+ years now, and never been to House of Flair. Vivian is the boss, and she has been cutting hair for 51 years! She told me today that she had a customer who lived to 100 who just passed away last year, but that she had been cutting her hair for 50 years! Wow! Vivian was a pleasure to talk to, and even better, she is the fist hair stylist who understood what I was talking about when I explained the cut I wanted. Debbie at the House of Flair is AMAZING!!! I have been having her do my hair since 1995. I moved up from the city and was lucky to find her right away. She does incredible color... and I have been most of them. She also will cut my hair the way that I want no matter how outrageous! She does great waxing too and eye lash tinting. She is both fun & professional! Ooooo and the hair wash is so relaxing! She give the best scalp massage! I was looking for an unpretentious hair salon that was conveniently located and not run by people with multiple piercings, tattoos and dread locks. I just moved into Arcata and was desperately in need of a hair cut and color. I made an appointment with Vivian, a little old lady with her white hair pulled back. When I walked in, the place seems like it hadn't been remodeled since it opened 40 years ago. It was clean, though. I was skeptical, and I took a seat in the chair. My favorite stylist is Debbie, she listens to what you say, works with you and is very talented. She loves to do color and it shows in her work. I came here with the reviews from yelp being great, well being a girly girl and loving doing hair i thought she would be understandable as to what i wanted. Totally not!! I asked for a layered a-aline and she gave some horrible cut that i only hope i can fix asap! She has no style, no flavor, no poise, the atmosphere smells like a hospital and its dirty. I called on short notice for an appointment and was given an 11:00 that day. When I walked in I almost turned around and left...the place looked like it hadn't been changed in many years. I wanted a modern cut and wasn't sure the woman that was going to cut my hair could or would do it right. I sat down and 10 minutes later I had the best haircut I'd had in many years. I got 5 buzz cuts from him in past, we talked, it was great until today.....he finished guy, got paid and invited me in his chair.....but he didn't clean....hair in chair, on armrest, all over the floor....i asked him to clean the chair, he did, but i had to walk in the mess on the floor....this is health issue...Sad.I will go and try to find someone else.
