My brother has been doing my hair since I can remember so moving to Spokane it has been hard to get to him and after having family pics done and seeing how terrible my grow out was I need to have something done. I called House of Pop and asked for someone who was good with color. I was paired with Jacob and I must say I am extremely happy with my whole experience. He made me feel secure about what he was going to do and made me feel confident. The whole entire experience was AAA+. Not to mention they carry my hair care products! Very reasonably priced considering Seattle prices are almost triple. The salon is well lit and very cozy. Very classy and not super loud. Street parking was easy. I especially loved the scalp massage lol. I forgot about those because my brother never gives them to me!!!! SCORE.. The hot towel on the back of the neck as you're getting your hair rinsed is a total game changer! Its really the little things at a salon that stand out and make you want to go back! My first visit to House of POp was yesterday and it was SO GOOD! Haylee did my color and Douglas did the cut and they were both totally awesome - so friendly and inviting, and excited to be working on my hair. (I've experienced some salons where the stylist seems bored or over it and makes me feel like I'm inconveniencing them.) I went in for a pretty big transformation with both color and cut and LOVE what each stylist did. Douglas not only gave an amazing cut, he taught me how to style it, maintain it, and take care of it. I walked out super stoked about my hair, and also confident that I can manage this cut, which is very different for me! My boyfriend scheduled an appointment with Nick for a trim, requesting specifically to keep his length but even out and trim the ends. he has shoulder length curly hair and after he got home and showered, his hair was a bit past the chin and extremely uneven. When the hair dried out the unevenness was even more noticeable that we now have to fix it ourselves. after paying a $175 and receiving seemingly knowledgeable suggestions you would expect something better than a supercuts level job... on a side note, i do not know the atmosphere of the shop nor have i met the barber, i am simply submitting a review on the horrible result of the hair cut. read more

Ok - so I'm going to start with the POSITIVE parts. The environment is nice and the front desk staff was warm and welcoming. While there isn't a lot of seating available while you wait, it IS comfy! They even have a movie playing on the wall via a projector. They offer you drinks too! Now - Before I go into the reason for the negative review, I want to point out a couple things. First - I had NEVER been to this salon. I chose it solely based on the great reviews and some of my own research. Mistake #1. Second - I chose a stylist based on his bio, photos, videos and reviews. Mistake #2. Third - it was SOLELY MY FAULT for choosing to go ahead with such a drastic change based on the first and second points. Mistake #3. That being said - here's my experience: I chose Douglas as my stylist to cut my long hair into something short. I scheduled a MAKEOVER SESSION, which with him runs about $150 and requires 1.5 hours. I brought in lots of pics for inspiration and told Douglas what I wanted - less weight, something edgy and cool and sassy, something that didn't require much work/effort. I was tired of my long hair. He glanced at the pics (briefly) and suggested to just cut some shape into my already existing long hair. I refused, stating that I was tired of my long hair and that I would just pull it up anyway. What I wanted was short hair and that I was leaving it to his expertise to work with my texture, curls, thickness, pictures, etc. He seemed confident and I felt like we were on the same page. After a shampoo and conditioning (no head/scalp/neck massage btw) I sat in the chair and Douglas began to section my hair off for cutting. Not once did he ask me if I was sure about this - and even if he had, I still would have had him cut it short. After all this is what I came in for (I'm merely stating this as a fact since some people make a hasty decision to cut off all of their hair and it is always better to err on the side of caution for the hairdresser before starting by asking the client "if they're sure". LOL!) And that was about the extent of conversation that happened in the chair. No small talk, no "what do you do for a living", nada. Just - silence. Anyway, Douglas used primarily a razor to cut my hair (the pulling/slicing of the razor left my scalp super tender for days btw). I don't know what kind of cut he envisioned or what even he gave me, but it was something between a bouffant that my grandma would wear and a combover. When he was "done" he remarked "There she is!" and I'm like "Who??" Whatever was dying on top of my head surely couldn't be "the new me"?? I told Douglas that it wasn't exactly what I envisioned. Basically my nice way of saying what the holy hell is this?? I then suggested that maybe the sides being a little shorter would make the top look more punk/sassy/set apart. I knew we were already over the time, but then he walked away from the chair and made this weird gesture to the front desk. Not sure what it was, but it made me feel bad for taking up his time - a client should NEVER feel like that! I apologized to Douglas and thanked him for taking the extra time with me to "fix" my hair. He said, "No worries, we are done when we are done." Well, not sure what "done" was supposed to look like, but I literally left his chair with this bouffant/lop-sided mohawk/wth is this "style" style. He didn't even blow dry it or use a flat iron or any styling whatsoever - again probably because we were running over the time. And he didn't even shave/razor my neck to clean that up. I paid (his time is time nevertheless) and left the salon super upset (and NO I wasn't sad about cutting my long hair - I knew EXACTLY what I was doing and wanted). But here we are today and I have shaved my head - since it was better than the "makeover" I got. A complete waste of $150+tip and a style that couldn't be worked with unless "Jeffrey Dhamer sheik" was supposed to be the "new me". Needless to say, I won't be going back (lol no hair now so don't need to anyway). read more

Trendy, friendly but spendy. The staff have a certain je-ne-sais-quoi attitude about them: competent, inviting, chic, down-to-level but eclectic. Nick cuts my hair and he is quite competent--especially considering I give vague directions such as 'I want something trendy,' 'I don't give a damn' or 'like this random guy's picture' upon his initial inquiry into my oft inchoate styling inclinations. The primary downside is the cost. However, it's only a few dollars more than the higher-end chains, although it varies according to the cosmetologist, and as far as I can tell, the staff are trained in all the modern techniques--something I can't say for previous salons. The cherry on top is there's always a Diet Pepsi while you wait and a lollipop or some similar sweet when you go. I handily recommend this as the place for anyone that wants an experience, and a cut, that diligently defies the prosaic pilosebaceous prosody of Spokane's straggly soliloquy. read more

Do not go here! I had the worst haircut of my life last week. I walked in with long hair, asked to have 1-2 inches taken off, told her that I wear my hair up in a clip or a pony at work since I am a nurse. She cut 4 inches off and cut the front so short that I can barely put it behind my ears. I am so upset about this. Not only is it not what I asked for, it is a total hack job. This is the first salon I've visited since moving up to Spokane and I'm so glad I did (reminds me a bit of the place I used to go to down in Cali). It's cool and modern and has a fancy good hair salon vibe to it that can intimidate shy folks like myself but it's cools, just means they know what they're doing!! The stylists are actually really friendly and really take the time to listen to you and make sure that the style you pick will actually work for you. Mellisa helped me get the perfect long pixie! She really knew what she was doing and completely understood my needs and wants. As far as price it's a heck of a lot cheaper than in long beach! Haha so that was a total plus!! She is relatively new to that salon but experienced and professional in the industry. She listened to what I wanted and didn't upsell me on any products or services. I have long, fairly straight hair and my only requirement for my haircuts is that I'm able to shower and walk out the door without doing any styling or use of fancy products. Where to begin. I booked an appointment on Saturday 03/19 and they called me two hours before to cancel it saying they made a mistake. Whatever. Things happen. They said they'd add a 20% off my next visit. Again whatever, I don't really care for $10, but ok. They rebooked me with the same girl on 03/23 at 11pm. I re-irritated to then that I have really long, thick hair and that they should take that into account when booking the time. But she said It was just adding some face framing, not a full cut so they should have more than enough time. I show up at 11:03pm, and waited till 11:25pm. At which point I asked them if I should reschedule because they're clearly running behind. I wasn't a brat about it, because I'm the one on a tight schedule here. I simply said let's reschedule. They said "she'll be a minute longer". Ok cool. I told her what I wanted, and everything was going great till she left my hair half wet, and one of the most awful "blow dry" jobs I have ever seen. Seriously felt like I was at a beauty school. She didn't even bother to comb the knots out of my hair. When I went to check out the girl ringing me up asked if I wanted to reschedule and I said "absolutely not". Because this isn't the 1st time that they've left me with half wet hair. I've had long thick hair all my life, and it's second nature to tell front desk to allot time for it. Honestly between the rescheduling and, the delayed time, add the wet hair I never want to come back here. I seriously look forward to treating myself to a haircut and it absolutely sucks that I walk out of there feeling and looking like a scarecrow with the amount of frizz because they can't be Bothered to actually do what they're being paid to. 2 starts because she did a good job on the cut and seems like a good person. I've been growing my grey hair fro 2 years, was down to my butt. Here are the issues. When I made the ppointemtn I asked for an experienced hair stylist, I was assured Nelson was, he is not. When Nelson was done with my hair it was a little below my shoulders, which I wouldn't have minded if it was a good cut. One side was noticeably longer than the other and there was no attempt at any type of haircut. I called to let them know I wasn't happy, they offered to have the owner fix it. Douglas immediately noticed the difference in lengths, attempted to fix it but now th side he "fixed" is longer than the other side. I had katelyn-eylar do my hair. I asked for some blonde tips on the ends of my hair. Not a balayage, not highlights, just some lighter tips with a slight fade. So some foils if anything. Her and Julie hovered over me the whole time! I noticed she started putting foils all the way up to my head, which she shouldn't have been doing if I just wanted my tips done. She then decided that because I didn't come out blonde enough to put in gray (remind you I was blonde all over and hadn't even know yet) I turned green / yellow. I could see she knew how it looked and stopped talking. I went and cried in my car, it wasn't even CLOSE to what I wanted, not at all. The service was not only bad but I feel the environment is unprofessional, and when I left, they told me how much to tip her like it wasn't an option. I cried, people. I hope people see this review and know that sometimes people don't listen and have off days. But the fact that no one offered me to come back or at least tell me what she was doing to my hair, made me understand that she was 1. Not the stylist for me and 2. I was never going back there. *this was in December right before Christmas. ( I recently have downloaded yelp - but also reviewed on google) I saw nothing but great reviews on this place and went for it, was suggested katelyn, and she even told me she had just started doing hair. I wish I had had the guts to refuse the pay (170.00 - cut & color) And because of this experience I have yet to get my haircut since, mostly because I'm so nervous to try someone new again and get someone like this young lady. She was fun and spunky and cool, that's why I wish she would've been more up front with the color and actually listened instead of over foiling and putting in colors that were never asked for. read more

Mattie did ahmazing work! I haven't had a haircut in about 8 years. It was long and splitting. I went in with an idea of shorter length of hair about the length of half boob. A few coworkers suggested a few layers in front. I went in and told Mattie I wanted it shorter and she also suggested just one length which was exactly what I wanted in the first place. She was very knowledgeable about hair and textures and styling. My hair has always been very flat and she used the Dallas thickening spray to create some volume. My hair has never looked better. I loved all the products she used. And even showed me how to get nice loose curls using a curler size that I have at home. I got exactly what I was hoping to come out of this experience. House of POp is all that. I've walked by this spot downtown and noted the chic hair boutique. A friend recommended it and her hair always looks great. So I booked an appointment online with Mattie. Online booking is a huge plus, IMHO. Walking in, this place is tidy and has great lighting. It was hopping with trendy customers from hipsters to lovely older ladies. I was offered water, tea or coffee upon checking in and I have to say the coffee was tasty. I'm always hesitant to have a new stylist take on my curly hair. Mattie offered some curl education to make the most of what I have. She listened to what I wanted, came up with a plan and explained everything clearly. The shampoo smelled nice but wasn't overpowering. If I was a cat I would have purred through the massage-y shampoo bowl goodness. Mattie is a masterful conversationalist (but not over-the-top) and was able to find common topics to chat about as she cut and styled my hair to perfection. I didn't go home feeling like I had to style my hair all over again to get it to look the way I want...a new sensation for me. The H+Co products smelled great and my curls have never looked better. Will be taking my business elsewhere. After reading a few reviews I decided while in Spokane for the day I would see if I could get in for a haircut. I call and was happily told that three stylist had openings that morning. I explained that I had not been in before and that I had very fine curly hair. The receptionist cheerfully told me she would suggest Julie. I quickly took the appointment seeing as she was the one recommend. I arrived for my appointment and was cheerfully greeted by both the receptionist and Julie. Julie took me back to her station and I started to explain that I wanted a Lob. While I was undoing my ponytail and getting situated Julie pulled up a few pictures on her phone. I was excited to see they were the exact same photos I had been looking at before . Julie then took me back to the shampoo area and applied a warm towel to the shampoo bowl neck rest. So deliciously relaxing. So at this point I'm personally congratulating myself on choosing such a great place. Julie is nice and she seems to know what I want. After the shampoo. She starts the cut. We are chatting away and she is telling me she is new to living in Washington state and just started at the salon a couple weeks before. Now about half way thru my cut, what I assume is , another stylist starts sweeping up my hair and watching the haircut closely. I start to wonder what's going on. Julie is new to the salon so..?? I try to ignore it. Then at the end of the hair cut I realize I'm not going to be leaving with the haircut I wanted. My hair is cut now cut in a stacked bob. Which is several inches shorter then I wanted and it doesn't look even close to the pictures Julie had shown. I'm bummed but I know I can rock it so I shake it off. Then I see Julie take thinning shears and cut my baby fine bangs with them. Which just makes for frizzy bangs. Julie then applies some volume foam in my hair and round brushes me dry and the hair cut and style is over. No finishing my haircut with personalization techniques. No finishing my style out. Just round brush and go. At this point I'm totally bummed and feel like I must have actually walked in to the beauty school next door and not the highly educated salon I thought I had booked with . I'm actually sad to post such a low review, but I just have to share about my experience. I've heard nothing but good things about this place, and even the reviews on here are all positive. Maybe I'm the only person who feels this way, but nonetheless I want people to know, my experience was disappointing. I first want to say that this place is super cute and the customer service was great, everyone was nice and friendly from the moment I called to make my appointment, so they definitely have that going for them. However even after 3 weeks of trying to adjust to my "new" hair, I really am so disappointed with it. I went in with a blunt bob, and a blonde ombre with my natural color on top. I felt like my hair was more brown than it was blonde and I really wanted a pretty drastic color change so that my hair would be almost platinum with an ashy tone. Considering I already had blonde in my hair, and my natural color is light brown, I didn't think this was too much to ask. I came in with pictures of what I was wanting and repeated myself over and over to make sure it was clear what I was going for. Jerrold was the one coloring and cutting my hair, and he assured me that highlights were the best route instead of all over color-which I was open to, thinking I could trust his professional opinion. Then after over 3 hours of highlights, my hair was dried and styled and it was not anywhere even remotely close to what I was looking for, in fact my hair looked exactly the same to me. I was honest with him and told him everything I felt, he was very understanding and made it clear to me that he wanted me to schedule a re-do to fix it. So I did schedule one for the following week. I came back and spent another 2 hours sitting for more highlights, and when it was finished, I once again felt that it looked exactly the same, literally there was no improvement. My hair still now looks like it has a blonde ombre, and the majority color is a light brown. My hair also still has the yellowy tone, which like I said in the beginning was the opposite of what I was going for. He must have know that I was going to be disappointed with the outcome, because when it was finished he told me that in order to get what I originally wanted that I needed to do an all-over color, which in his words would be "$40-$50 an hour, with two sessions, at 3-5 hours EACH". Ummmm what?? So you're telling me, that to do what I originally asked you to do, it's not only going to cost me more time, but upwards of $500? When I've already given you a big chunk of money and 5 hours of my time to look like I never even got my hair done. Sorry, but no way. Unfortunately for this company, I have 3 friends who are looking for a new salon, and were eager to hear my feedback about House of Pop. And though the atmosphere was great, and the people were kind and friendly, they simply did a poor job with my hair and I would not recommend them. One other thought, I don't know if it's customary for salons to do "add-ons" without telling you how much it will cost, but when I got my bill it was way more than I expected because he had done extra things to my hair which he failed to communicate would cost more. I honestly probably would've complied but at least I would've had the option if for some reason I couldn't have afforded it. Will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

The vibe in this salon is cool, open, and fashionable. I went in for a basic trim and chose Jerrold as my stylist, after reading a little about each stylist from HoP's website. I can afford a salon haircut about once a year ($60 is a lot of money to spend on hair!) but I was not disappointed! I asked for a trim, and to have my self-buzzed sidecut cleaned up, with a fade added into it. Jerrold told me more about my own hair than I ever knew before (in almost 30 years of life on this planet) and was extremely helpful with various tips on how to care for my hair type. I was opposed to layers, having had bad experiences in the past, but he asked me to trust him, and I did--and now I don't know how I could've ever forsaken layers. Layers are a great, great thing for wavy hair. Anyway, all in all I had a great experience. There was one small hiccough, in that Jerrold wasn't satisfied with the fade he did and we both agreed a more dramatic, defined fade was what I wanted. He asked me to come back in two weeks so he could do it over, free of charge. I scheduled my appointment and came back in two weeks, he cleaned me up, and then they charged me $10 for it. Not a huge deal, but for someone who can only afford a salon once a year--at best!--I was dismayed. Especially since I tipped quite generously the first time around--spent more than I had budgeted for, simply because the service was so good. I do plan on going back in the next few months, as it's been about a year since my last cut, however! And I do recommend this salon in general. read more

Finding a talented stylist in a city with multiple cosmetology schools can be tough; the market is flooded with new graduates and people who figured it would be a nice interim career. The trick, I have found is to reach out to educators and find out who has really done the work. I don't just mean "got their license and is now doing some hair." I mean has sufficient passion, conviction, and dedication to personal improvement that they are constantly researching methods and taking time out of their personal lives to get extra training. For me, that person is Mellisa. Mellisa is super excited about her job and is ALWAYS going above and beyond to improve her technique and skills. She is such a hardworking woman. I really admire her devotion to the craft. My hair is not for everyone. Everyone in the industry has strengths and weaknesses, and fine curls are not everyone's cup of tea. Because of the above, Mellisa NAILED it. In addition to her many professional talents, she took the time to listen and heard exactly what I was saying when I saw her last weekend. We had a true conversation about my hair and she was able to bridge the divide between what I was asking (as someone who is not apprised of industry language) and what she needed to do. She was generous with her time, and let me explain all the things I didn't love about my last haircut (one which she did NOT give me), what my short and long term hair goals were, helped me understand what our options were, and together we chose the best solution. Because of her attention to me and my needs as well as the unique texture and growth patterns of my hair, she gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had. I'm so grateful! read more

(Everytime I had made an appointment it was scheduled for a 30 minute session instead of a 3-5 hr time block, making for further rescheduling. Very inconvenient). Other than that the atmosphere was nice and everyone was friendly. But.... if you happen to forget about your appointment and they call to remind you...... They clearly stated they could still fit me in, so I arrived a little late for my appointment as they said it was ok. I was expecting to get my hair colored and cut but once I began speaking with my stylist Kat in the salon chair. She began saying how she couldn't style my hair because I was too late for my appointment. I told her that the receptionist said that he had talked to her and they agreed I could still have my style done. She said well you took too long (I was 5 minutes past the time I said I'd arrive). Kat refused to service me and was very rude saying that I'm not a reliable customer and she's trying to build a steady customer base. I asked her why she had me drive 30 minutes one way and waste an hour of my time, why didn't they tell me on the phone rather than refuse service once I arrived to the salon. This is a very unprofessional way of conducting business. If a salon expects to be successful, they should at least honor their word and style my hair with the time they have or offer me a rescheduled time that would be appropriate to have enough time. But she stated that the salon could not longer have me as a customer to any stylist because they don't allow late or no show clients. So if I were you I wouldn't be even one minute late to your appointment or they might turn you away like they did me. Also I would like to point out that I spent 100s Of dollars on previous appointments and even purchased extra hair products that they basically forced down my throat.... you would think they would treat me as a previously high paying customer with a little decency. The price of their salon is very high but you do get what you pay for. And I don't think that it's appropriate to treat clients this way. Just because you have a nice "fancy" salon doesn't mean you need to treat customers like s**t! Kat and the House of Pop are a joke! read more

Nick is amazing and fun to chat with! He gives me a stellar haircut everytime:) The place is fresh and modern and all the staff are great.

I live out of town and needed a trim. I found Nick at the House of Pop. He has the same type of hair as I do and did an exceptional job listening to my needs (NO thinning shears) and concerns about my hair. He was precise, conservative with how much he cut off, and explained what he was doing and how it would help my style. I didn't walk out looking like I got a fresh haircut. Rather, I walked out looking more refined. Exactly what I want in a haircut! Nick is amazing. I'll book ahead on my next trip to Spokane! The salon is super cool. This is my go to hair salon in Spokane. Alyssa did a phenomenal job transforming my long dull hair into a really beautiful cut, matching just the style I showed her I wanted. I honestly couldn't even believe how light my hair felt afterwards. Everyone here from the stylists to the front desk workers are welcoming and friendly. Seriously, this is the only place on the planet I trust with my hair. I have been seeing stylists here from the day they opened and even before that at previous establishments. I have super thick dyed blond hair and they always make me come out looking like a supermodel. I have tried to replicate the work that they do at other salons throughout the country, but have been unable to find someone as talented as these guys. Douglas and his staff have been able to create something very special here in Spokane. I highly suggest checking them out whether it's for just a simple trim or a full foil and makeover. This place is not stuffy whatsoever. They'll serve you coffee in a mug from the movie gremlins and make you feel like 1 million bucks. read more
