House of Umami is a must-visit spot. The food is absolutely incredible. The ramen has a rich, deeply flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles. It is ultimate comfort food. The sushi rolls are equally amazing, tasting incredibly fresh and expertly crafted with generous portions. The service is attentive, and the atmosphere is welcoming. If you are craving authentic, high-quality Japanese comfort food, do yourself a favor and check this place out. I will definitely be back! That is all. First time here and it was great! I love how this place is a scratch kitchen, so all of our food was freshly made. My family and I wanted to try something new and this restaurant popped up for us when looking up places online. Safe to say, House of Umami didn't disappoint. Special shoutout to our waitress, Maria! She was amazing! Maria graciously helped us with the menu and was very attentive. solid vegan options! we ordered the tofu bao buns (sans special sauce), vegan potstickers, vegan ramen, fancy vegetable roll, and avocado roll. the sushi was good quality. the avocado roll was maki (nori on the outside) which is perfect to keep the roll all together as our 10 month old ate. the fancy vegetable roll was crunchy and the pickled veg was prominent. the bao buns are 1 per order so we ordered 2. the buns were large and fluffy and the tofu was cooked well and flavored. we ordered without one of the sauces which i believe is mayo based. we just wrote that in our online order notes to make the item vegan. the tofu in the vegan ramen was very good too and the broth was flavorful and salty. the vegan potstickers were good - nothing special. those came 4 in an order. online ordering was easy and the vegan items came clearly labeled in the bag. our order was ready fairly quickly too. read more

We had a lovely meal here! My husband, baby, and I stopped in for a bit of an early dinner so we were able to be seated immediately. We were in the mood for some good ramen, and that's exactly what we got. We started with some steamed dumplings that were pretty solid. For our entree we split the tonkotsu ramen and a few rolls. Made no reservations on a Sunday night. Requested for a booth table. Was seated after 5 minutes of waiting. The servers were very courteous and always smiling, looked nice in their all black shirt, pants and apron. Modern interior ... elements of wood, vinyl red upholstery, and lots of japanese lanterns hanging by the sushi bar and kitchen area. Lots of elbow room and proportional height of the dining table. And in each table, they would place on top of each sushi plate a thick paper napkin, and chopstick with their logo printed on the front. Very hot water is served in a ceramic sake cup. For a group of three, we ordered the highly recommended Tonkotso Ramen $18, Stir fry noodles $16, and Chicken Katsu Curry Bowl $17. There was a strange smell of the bowl used to served the stir fry noodles and it tasted bland .. but for Ramen noodles, I very much enjoyed enjoyed eating the thin noodles garnished with chashiu, soft boiled egg, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, nori and corn - the only downside is the broth was easily absorb by the noodles so you might need to order extra broth for additional $5. The breaded chicken breast is good in proportion enough to feed three and the curry sauce was ok ... maybe a few pieces of carrot would have been great. I do commend how they prepared the egg and created a very nice plating of it on top of the rice. At first, we hesitated to dine in because of the reviews like slow service but actually it seems that the food and drinks were served more or less 10-15 minutes. Just about right when you want your food to be prepared by them the right way. Free parking. Dining area is warm so don't bother wearing a thick jacket inside. read more

House of Umami is a great option for Sushi, Ramen, and coordinated drinks in Canton, MI. I recently stopped by while catching up with a friend, and we both ended up getting dinner and a drink -- both cocktails were delightful (way too tempting to get more than one!), and we both left happy with the food as well. The sushi menu is robust and has lots of familiar favorites - the servers were also really helpful in pointing out some of their go-tos. I'd recommend asking them for some options based on what you usually gravitate toward! The atmostphere inside the restaurant is casual, but you can tell it's poppin' because there seems to be quite the crowd at peak times. The only (minor) complain I have is that the location right on (very busy) Ford road makes getting out of the parking lot a challenge at peak times (especially if you need to head eastbound on Ford road), but this isn't a restaurant problem so much as a Canton issue! Have came here a few times since my first time and the flavors are so well balanced in the ramen I have ordered. Tonight I ordered the tonkotsu ramen with added tufu & naruto and it was so tasty and came out nice and hot. It just needed alittle more broth since I added more ingredients. My hubby ordered the chicken shirt ramen and he enjoyed it as well. We grabbbed the adorable sweet heart rolls that were not disappointing at all and oh so cute just perfect for Valentines Days . The soup dumplings were yummy as well but we didn't like the dipping sauce that came with it and instead ate them as they were because they didn't need anything added. Now our server was very nice and when he came to our table immediately suggested items to us to have for the night. He was very attentive and kept out table clean. I loved that. We were recovering from a cold and just arrived in Michigan, craving some ramen. For context, we have ramen probably every 1-2 weeks back in NYC. I had the tonkotsu and my husband had the miso. Overall, very satisfying. The chashu was clearly good quality meat. I normally don't care for the chashu, but finished it here. We both did have to add hot sauce to our ramen. My husband doesn't normally prefer a spicy broth, but thought the miso was bland. My tonkotsu broth was salty and creamy - exactly what I needed. The place is very open and organized. The noise level was quiet and they were full and had great music playing in the background. I would like whoever's playlist they had on. The staff is always very friendly and everyone you pass greets you. This time we had an exceptional server Addy. She was very attentive made sure our water glasses stayed topped off, if we needed anything, asked how the food was. Explained how to best enjoy eating the soup dumplings without getting a burnt mouth and to use the sauce. She checked on all of our dishes if we liked them. We ordered the crispy Rangoon, loaded fries, soup dumplings, shrimp tempura and the curry ramen. The loaded fries were great, the fries stayed crispy outside soft inside the sauces were so good. I especially like the spicy mayo. The soup dumplings were okay. The soup didn't have much to it. I have had better and worse elsewhere. I want to mention before reviewing this restaurant that I did a take out order and did not actually eat in the restaurant. I placed a large order with a variety of items for my family to get a good feel of what was being offered. We got a dragon roll, a chicken shio ramen (substituted udon noodles for ramen), 2 bao buns, crispy rangoon and stir-fried noodles from the kids menu. When I picked up the order I noticed after looking at the receipt that they only charged me for one bao bun. Since I paid for 1 and not 2, I decided to just leave it at that because I didn't want to wait for them to make another. When I got home I noticed that they didn't give us the stir-fried noodles even though I paid for it, so I had to come back to get it (thankfully I was less than 5 minutes away). First impression wasn't good based on the miscommunication, but I found the food to be very good overall. Nothing I ate was spectacular compared to simple Asian restaurants I've been to, but I will give them credit on one thing. Their stir-fried noodles were easily my favorite thing on the menu even though they were advertised for children, and everyone loved them. My son and daughter could not get enough, so I am happy the portion size was generous. When I come back for more food I will make sure to get 2 orders, one for my wife and I as well as one for my picky toddlers. I made a mental note to visit House of Umami on my next trip to Michigan as I noticed its presence during my last visit. The standalone structure on Ford Rd has seen many businesses pass through its doors after the original tenant of Elias Brothers' Big Boy closed decades ago. The exterior facade was neatly decorated with hanging red lanterns that are common in Asian cultures because they symbolize prosperity. The inside was refurbished from the last enterprise (coney hot dogs) to a modern izakaya setting. We arrived for dinner and sat at one of the booths. The menu was a potpourri of Japanese offerings. Ramen, donburi bowls, small plates, sushi rolls, nigiri/sashimi, and desserts were the categories. My friends started with the Bao Buns containing chicken while I settled for the Bang Bang Chicken from the small plates. Each of us then ordered a ramen bowl. Mine was the Miso Ramen that had chashu, molten egg (soft boiled), bean sprouts, sweet corn, seasoned bamboo shoots, nori (seaweed), and sesame seeds as components to supplement the noodles. For the Bang Bang, the chicken pieces were coated with a breading and then fried and served with a spicy sweet sauce topped with green onions. They tasted like breaded nuggets. I wish a light starch batter would have been applied to the meat and then fried like karaage. The noodles in my ramen bowl were cooked just fine. The broth was a little off-point for my palate. The liquid was more on the heavy side while a lot of corn kernels were added. One large piece of tender chashu pork was placed in the center. The prices were reasonable for the amount of food we received. taste and quality could have used some improvement. For our dinner experience at House of Umami, I gave a rating between three and four stars. read more

This place is my favorite Ramen spot in Canton. I am a huge Ramen fan and I moved into a new area and I was looking for a Ramen spot that I could frequent. Upon looking for restaurants in yelp, I came across House of Umami. So I drove to the restaurant and placed an order. While waiting on my order, I sat at the bar. Me being a person that loves scotch, they had a variety and they had my favorite, which was is McCallan 12, 18 & 25! Everything is top-notch in this restaurant, yet you will feel completely at-ease whether you are dressed down or dressed for business. My teenage son and I stopped here for a late lunch after spending time at the nearby Secretary of State, reading the reviews just prior. It did not disappoint!! In not a fan of charging for extra broth as there wasn't a lot in the original order; way too many noodles in my opinion. Price was higher than other places but I think it's priced for the area. First time here and first time having ramen. This used to be a American Coney Island and I was unaware that it had closed and reopened as House of Umami. Decor is very Asian with lots of lattice work in black and red. Makayla was our server and she was very polite and friendly. WE started with the spring rolls. You get four with a god portion of dipping sauce. They were very small but came out very quickly and were crispy and hot. My wife ordered the Chicken Shio ramen and she loved it. Chicken was very tender and she loved the broth. The molten egg and the bamboo shoots were also very good. I had the Tokyo Shoyu ramen and can only say it was ok. Broth was not very flavorful. Chasu was very good and I have a aversion to pork belly. Also loved the molten egg. I think they forgot the scallions but maybe next time. Overall it was a ok visit. I think we will go back and try a different appetizer and some sushi or a bowl. I need to get a lot more experience with ramen and am willing to give this place another try. We went here on Sunday night with a group of 8 of us an hour before closing. The servers and host were very nice to us despite this. We ordered quite a few appetizers to start. I got the Crispy Rangoons and the Chicken Bao Bun. Both were fairly good. Nothing crazy. My sister and her husband got the pork Bao buns, the spicy edamame (not pictured) and the bang bang chicken. The chicken was very good and tender. For the mains, I got the mango tango roll and I absolutely loved it. Very good mango to fish to spice ratio. I will say, I'm not the biggest fan of yellowtail so I got shrimp instead. Didn't make the biggest difference so I wouldn't do that again. (I want to say that everything pictured I tried despite it not being my main meal) I tried the chicken shio ramen from my sister and it was a very plain ramen. The broth tasted like cup-o-noodles in my personal opinion. The tonkotsu ramen was the best ramen of the night. As a ramen enjoyer, I value a good bowl of tonkatsu ramen. The ramen is satisfying. The broth is warm and rich, and chashu is nicely cooked and delicious. However, the broth is way too salty for my taste. Broth, not noodles, is the SOUL of a Japanese ramen. You want Ramen to be soupy. So costumer can order extra noodles to eat with it. Also "watering down" the soup would probably bring out the "umami" flavor more, otherwise the pork boney flavor is overshadowed by the saltiness. The broth-to-raman ratio is a bit too low. Lastly, the bamboo shoots were prepared appropriately. There's at least one has non-chewable stems that I have to spit it out. I also ordered two nigiri. They are nicely made. So far the best sushi I had in the SE Michigan region. Great services. This chain has lots of potential, but still have many room to improve. It gets 3 stars because it's acceptable in places like Michigan. It would be 2 stars at most in places like NYC or LA. read more

Waitress was friendly, the soup noodles took a few, middle of day- ramen came quicker. Soup noodles were special app, they were hot and steamy. I liked the sauce they brought for them. We ordered tonkatsu ramen next and it was a lot of delicious noodles, pork, and egg. Unfortunately lacking broth to cover as well as it being other than like warm in temperature. I did eat a significant amount of it still- it was good. Perhaps lots of sodium resulted in my gurgly and friends gurgly stomach later- and still good . We ordered both the traditional tonkotsu ramen and the black garlic ramen, but both were served with an unusually minimal amount of broth--more like a dry, soaked-up noodle dish than ramen. Because of this, we requested additional broth simply to correct what appeared to be an issue with the dish. At no point were we informed that there would be an additional charge for the broth. The menu had already been taken away, so we had no way of knowing or verifying that this would be charged. Despite this, we were billed full price for it. We explained that the ramen was initially served lacking proper broth, which is why we requested it. Madison, who did not introduce herself until we asked for her name, who appeared to be either the manager or head cashier, was apologetic but did not demonstrate a clear understanding of the situation or offer an appropriate resolution. As Asians who regularly eat ramen, we are very familiar with how this dish is expected to be prepared and served. Unfortunately, this did not meet even basic expectations. Additionally, the noodles were excessively salty to taste. Overall, while the restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere, the food quality and service were disappointing. Being charged extra to correct what was clearly a preparation issue--without any prior disclosure--is not acceptable. Based on this experience, a restaurant that does not reasonably address customer concerns would not be one we would recommend to others or choose to patronize again. read more

Just tried this place out, it is located on ford road on its own standalone plaza near Raja Rani. As soon as I entered I was in awe of the beautiful decorations and the upscale ambiance in here; it is really nicely done and sophisticated with accent colors of red and black and yet, feels unfussy as in you can walk in dressed up or down. My friend and I got the yellowtail sushi which was a special ($11 for five pieces) to try first which was a special on the table, it's nice how they have pictures on the table of the specials too! The yellowtail special was really tasty and I'm not usually a raw fish type of lover but it had a good taste to it. We also each got a chicken ramen bowl which presentation wise looked great, I did feel the portion of noodles was a little less for all the broth but the broth was tasty. I dont have ramen often but I did not find it salty. The broth had a nice depth to it and the chicken seemed to be cooked well. I do feel the portion of the ramen bowl could be increased with at least more noodles. My friend was mystified by the big bamboo shoots in the soup which were tasty and seasoned but they could be cut down a tad size wise. We split the crepe cake for dessert which came in three flavors: mango, taro and strawberry. We got the mango cake and it was a nice light dessert that didn't feel too heavy and was not too sweet either which I prefer. This place is definitely worth a visit for the great service and ambiance. I would just suggest for the restaurant to add a few more side dishes / appetizers to the menu like others before commented, I don't think I saw a miso soup option. read more

We got some ramen, a sushi roll, and a couple of appetizers. Service was relatively quick and the meal was paced well. Best bite was the ramen. Fresh noodles with a umami bite was a highlight. The egg was perfectly poached and the black garlic was mellow and sweet. The sushi roll was prepped well, properly seasoned rice, fried to crispy. But the cream cheese overpowered the other elements. The angry edamame were not spicy at all. I had to get them "furious" by dunking them into shiracha. But they were cooked. The avocado bomb was good. The hot fried avocado and the ice cold crab played nicely on the pallet. The pork belly bao was a stellar bite though. Rich, meaty, little sweet and spicy, on a soft but spongy bao bun. A very nice little bite. Pricing was a little high, but the quality matched the price. It's good but kind of basic sushi. We went for lunch, around 1:30pm, we got the following items: - Tonkotsu Ramen - Tokyo Shoyu Ramen - Bao Buns - one of each (tofu, chicken charshu) - Rolls: Spicy Salmon Roll, Crispy Spicy Tuna Roll & Dynamite Roll The service was good, walked in, got greeted and seated right away. The place look very nice, but that's all "good" things that I can say. $18 for Tonkotsu Ramen? Nope! The broth was brown (first time ever seeing a brown broth for Tonkotsu) and salty. The Shoyu was just that, soy sauce diluted in hot water with lack of seasoning. Rolls were decent, but you can buy the same rolls at your local grocery store that taste the same. Boa's were decent as well, the Tofu was very salty. The place offers no Miso Soup or salad, two essential items at any Japanese restaurants.
