After a long workday, I was in the mood for sushi. And I wanted to try a new restaurant instead of relying on my tried-and-true places. After a quick search, I was on my way to Kabuki. It is located on Ford Rd, with IKEA, Carvel, and Buffalo Wild Wings serving as landmarks. The restaurant is dark, which always makes me a bit uneasy. Some chefs/owners may claim that it sets a mood, but I feel that it hides dirt and makes it challenging to discern ingredients. I quickly reviewed the menu and then carefully read all the ingredients to ensure that nothing I ordered contained salmon (an unfortunate allergy) and cream cheese. The latter because, after many, many attempts, I just don't like that ingredient in sushi rolls. I ordered the Tiger and Sunflower rolls. The Tiger roll starts with shrimp tempura wrapped with cucumber strips, crab stick, and eel, topped with more shrimp, avocado, and eel sauce. I also ordered the Sunflower roll and requested that the salmon be removed. It contained a mosaic of fish: white fish, tuna, yellowtail, escolar, (cooked) shrimp, crab stick, as well as avocado, and tamago. So very pretty. The Sunflower roll was, sadly, very bland. I don't think it was because of the missing salmon. I did like the Tiger roll, though. The mackerel sashimi and tamago also hit the spot, as they always do. Service was lovely. The servers were friendly and responsive. They quickly got take-out orders for the steady stream of customers. read more

After our favorite sushi place went under new management and everything changed we were on the look out for a new sushi place. We've often driven by and overlooked the location but I'm SO GLAD we finally took a chance and went inside. It's a bit dark, small and intimate but the service is great and love the sushi. The seaweed salad is delicious! The eel is my favorite here and the fill dragon roll is the best!! Really nice salmon and yellowtail. It has been a long time since we ate at here. We moved hours away and do not frequent this area often. The interior has not changed -- dark black painted walls. I did think it was arranged to get only one set of menus to share It wasn't busy I know there are enough to each have our own menus. The prices have increased quite a bit. I was surprised not to get a soup or a salad with a $30.00+ entree. Again it's been a long time since we ate here and we used to get both. Actually I was quite disappointed in that. Been coming here for years. Wife loves the Bibimbap here. For me, today was the combo Korean Entrees of Soon tofu soup and Kalbi. The Soon Tofu cone with a side of white rice that I add in. It helps to diffuse the heat for me. This is a spicy dish but one that after you are done eating, you feel good. Not bloated or heavy. Flavor is great and I love the egg that gets cooked in the hot pot. The Kalbi is awesome here and consistently good. Our waitress was a bit overwhelmed at times but managed us just fine between the carry out and dinner rush. Went here for a quick lunch. Service was fast, food came out pretty fast and fresh of course. There was a mix up with my soup so I didn't get that on time. I got the yum yum roll and miso soup. The yum yum was very delicious and had everything that I liked on a sushi roll. To be honest, I did not like the way the restaurant was set up. On the request of my middle son, we went to Kabuki for lunch as it was his birthday. We arrived kind of late, and the restaurant was about 45 minutes before closing time for afternoon. They are closed from like 3-5 pm. After quickly looking through the menu, we got some Miso soup to start off as appetizers. Soup were very tasty. We also ordered the yum yum roll for the birthday boy. I still don't know what that is as I haven't tasted it but he seems to love it. We also ordered a combination of other sushi such as spicy roll, spicy salmon, spicy tuna, California roll. My oldest son wanted a bimbimbap beef bowl. We did enjoy our food as the sushi was very good and the beef dish was flavorful and full of seasoning. Too bad we kind of had to rush as they were about to close for their afternoon session. A lot of my family members are big fans of this place, so I decided to tag along for dinner. Glad I did. We ordered a bunch of different soups, sushi rolls, main dishes, and just had at it family style. Sushi rolls were made well, the soups were very flavorful but not overly salty. Tempura shrimp and veggies were awesome. Oddly enough they had Korean kalbi and bulgogi, but for a Japanese restaurant they were still very good. I'd come back just for the kalbi alone. I dine in here/get takeout very frequently from Kabuki. Usually everything's great but today's experience was less than pleasant. I arrived around 8:30 on a Saturday with my sister and it was so busy we snagged the last open table. Someone took our drink orders when we sat down but never returned with our drinks. We then ordered food. 2 miso soups, 1 edamame, 1 salad, 1 California roll with spicy sauce on the side, 1 double climax with no masago, and 1 snow corn roll. Our appetizers came out first and then there was a super long wait for our sushi rolls. Their California is is always good. I didn't really care for the snow corn roll, and the double climax had masago in it (even though when she dropped it off at the table she specifically said "double climax no masago"). So I was not pleased at all about that, I wanted to tell the waitress so she could either take it off have them remake it, but my sister said she would eat it. At the end I noticed something in my soy sauce dish - it was a black hair. Mind you my sister and I have blonde hair, so this was clearly not mine. The rolls were pretty good, except for the fact that we asked for no masago (fish eggs) on one of the rolls... and there defiantly was, on the inside and very heavy in the center. Kabuki is hidden from the main road... it's not easy to find, unless you've been there before. It's behind the VerizonWireless Store, next to Jimmy Johns, right after Chili's (going west on Ford Road). When we got there (Friday night around 7:30pm), it was busy... luckily one of our party members got there early to get a table for five. We were looking around to see what others were eating and we noticed that lot of the tables had this hot plate dish... we asked what it was and found out it was Spicy Seafood Mix on hot plate... $19. We ordered this to share... for myself, I got the Tuna Sashimi. Other foods we ordered, rolls, Chicken Teriyaki, Soontofu & Bulgogi Combo and seafood soontofu. Tuna Sashimi - it definitely was not top grade... but it was okay... 10 thick slices of Tuna for $14... while we waited for the hot plate, I tried the Chicken Teriyaki... they should rename it to 'Dry Chicken Teriyaki'... yeah, the chicken was overcooked and dry. OKAY, we got out Spicy Seafood Mix - it's a mixture of squid, mussels, salad shrimps, shrimps on shell, baby scallops, mixed with Udon Noodles along with onions, green onions. The taste was on the sweet side, however it helped to tone down the spiciness. I liked this dish and would order it again... If you go and order Korean food, do the Soontofu Combo, it'll allow you to try two dishes at once. While I didn't pay attention to all the prices for the Korean food, some of their items are pricy... I've always been a fan of kabuki for sushi. Unfortunately, the Dearborn location closed so this was my first trip to the Canton location. The staff was friendly. They took the time to greet us and check up on any needs from time to time. It's not very big inside. Luckily there was no wait and we were seated right away. We ordered miso soup, 2 California rolls (one spicy and one with caviar), a dragon roll, baked shrimp and crab roll, and a dragon roll. All rolls tasted fresh and were very good. My favorite was the dragon roll with the baked roll coming in as a close second. Definitely will be returning. Reminded me so much of the Dearborn location before the big move to the other side of Michigan Ave. All you Dearborn people know what I'm talking about. read more

If you come here, you must get the soondoboo and kalbi combo. It used to be around 16 but now it's 20. I would say it's still a decent amount of food, and the soondooboo is definitely one of the best. The kalbi is a hit or a miss. The meat sometimes can be a little under-flavored. As for the other items on the menu, their sushi is nothing to die for, and the bento boxes are on par with what you would find at other places. The teriyaki chicken is quite dry. It tastes like a boiled chicken breast that was topped with teriyaki sauce. The sushi that comes with the boxes sometimes have rice that is dry. I would really only come back for the soondoboo. read more

Korean food is a newish love of mine. I had a Korean suitemate in college whose mother used to bring her happy nosh and she was a sharer. I discovered an intense love of kimchi and because of a lack of people to share this love with afterward, I no longer ate Korean food. Long into adulthood I found out what I had been missing by not just eating out alone. Terrific food. Happy bowls. Soups, rice dishes, marinated meats and all manner of deliciousness with little sides of fun to accompany them. A bit of sweetness with a sassy kick of heat. In other words, I had been a moron. This is a lovely and rather inexpensive place to explore. Very tasty seafood soondubu, one of my absolute fave Korean options. Thats enough to make me a happy camper. The seafood pancake was quite tasty too. On another occasion the bibimbap and hwedupbap were happy. The only sushi we explored was the spicy bowl of hwedupbap but going by that, the rest should be decent. I definitely plan on indulging in that chirashi that Kris recommends as I am a fan of the dish when it is done well too. Portions are generous. Service is fine. I have no complaints at all. I recommend giving it a whirl for Korean for sure. read more
