I am glad that the City has facility to recycle electronic and rechargeable batteries with different times and days open, so go online to check. I had an old TV and printer I needed to recycle. Arrived on North Branch Street and there are big signs to at lease tell you where to drive up to but there are no exact way to know how to park. It seems depending on who you see first, they get a bit offensive on the exact way you park to drop the electronic off. I had a few motherboards to recycle and was told they do not take those even if they were off of a TV. Looks like if the parts look like a TV they take it and if they are just boards off a TV. The workers there were great. I don't understand the other reviews because these guys were eager to help, friendly, and even lifted a heavy printer without me asking. I dropped off electronics and chemicals and both experiences were wonderful and quick. Also, they were open when their website said they'd be open. Old electronics, oil based paint, other items you know you shouldn't put in the trash? Yes, at some point we all have these things and should want to safely dispose of them. I learned about this place several years ago when I needed to recycle a tube TV and places like Best Buy no longer accepted them. It's pretty simple, you drive up and drop them off; generally no questions ask. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: 1) Check out the drop off schedule, it's very limited, especially if you want to drop off on a weekend. Assume that over a holiday weekend any Saturday hours that might otherwise occur are cancelled. 2) Review the list of accepted and not accepted items. I've seen folks try and drop off latex paint, which is promptly handed back to them. Three stars because while it's great to have a place to bring this stuff, it's stunning that there's only one location in the whole city and the drop off hours are extremely limited. read more

I've been here three times in last couple of months and every time the guys working there are complete jerks. They are very concerned that you're not dropping off things they don't recycle, but they aren't smart enough to be able to identify what they are looking at, so they hassle you with ignorant questions. I had been planning on doing an electronic dump for months with a big pile of stuff from the last several years: computers, TV, cables, tablets. It's not easy to get rid of this stuff responsibly, I had googled about this service from the city. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was very nice: there are two entrances, one for chemicals, one for electronics. Woohoo. I had a old can of stain that when opened, reeked of spoilage (didn't realize staing could go bad). Luckily, I just installed the iRecycle app on my iPod Touch and found out this place was open until 3 on Saturday. I rung them up and they said they were open the first Saturdays. I rummaged under my sicks to grab old chemical cans and put a bag together to take there. I was expecting a long line of spewing CO2 autos like the facilities in the suburbs. No line! Dropped it off and was done within 3 minutes of getting there. Someone mentioned that they don't accept latex paint. Well, none of the programs run by suburbs (Schaumburg or Kane county) accepts latex paint. I'm glad I know about this place. I have a bunch of electronics that I slowly take to Best Buy (and very slowly because I never shop there so the only time I go there is if I go to Target next door). read more

I got a small grill with a 1 gallon propane tank, when I finished using it I thought l just had to traded it in for another one , but that's not what happens. I took it to different stores but they just laughed, because you only trade in larger propane tanks. I couldn't just throw it out because it was hazardous, finally someone told me about the recycling center, by that time I had used my grill so much I had 3 more little tanks in my growing collection. So I took my household chemicals , including the propane tanks along with an old computer to the 32nd and 42nd and Sanitation Ward Yard. I had some trouble finding the correct location of the recycling plant on North Branch, I had to make several calls to different city offices. When I did drive up to the location there were large recycling bins on the street, the problem was they said not to put hazardous materials into them. The first time I came to the recycling center it was closed, but the second time I went around the back of the Streets and Sanitation building, on North Branch, where I found a large royal blue and canary yellow building with large glass windows, located on the edge of the Chicago River. I drove up to the first entrance and turned in my computer equipment, then I proceeded to the second entrance where I turned in all of my propane tanks! The gentleman who work at the recycling center were very helpful taking the larger items out of my car for me. At last I was free and I did the right thing for the environment. As far as I'm concerned, there were only a few concerns I had and still have, the recycling center is only open a limited number of hours each week. People can bring items to be recycled on Tuesdays mornings 7 AM until noon, Thursdays 2 to 5 PM, and on the first Saturday of every month open 7 AM to 12 noon. It would be nice if the center had additional hours to have these hazardous materials recycled. People might be tempted to place items in the recycling bin outside of the center even if they don't belong in that recycling bin, because the facilities are closed most of the time, and people don't want to take their unwanted items back home. For those reasons I am giving them 3 1/2 stars, which will show up as 4 stars, since Yelp only allows reviewers to give whole stars. **** Many people would ask why not just throw the tanks away. My answer is, if we want to have a cleaner environment for ourselves and our families then we must participate in recycling. It's everyone's choice the city, state, country, world will be uninhabitable in the years to come, if we don't take care of it now. read more

Well, Mads G. filled you in with all the key information, so all I need to do is rave about the free paint you can pick up there. People drop off both partially full and full cans of house paint, and there is quite a nice selection. They give you an opener so you can see the actual colors, and a really gnarly paint-spotted mallet for closing up the cans after you've snooped. I got three gallons plus a couple of quarts of good quality house paint, which would have cost me $50-60 at the nearest big box store. Also, I dropped off some computer equipment. They come to your car and transport it for you. I need to add this to my favorite freebies list! read more

I've been trying to get rid of my old broken LCD TV for months. My options were paying someone $150 to pick it up from me or driving an hour out to the suburbs to drop off the tv AND pay a fee of $50. Thankfully after numerous google searches, I came across this place. The location is so close to the Chicago downtown area. They also let me drop off my TV for FREE!!! The drop off hours are limited but I'm so thankful the option was even available at no cost to me. Dropping off was easy. We drove up to the site and someone came to us with a cart for us to easily place the TV on it. Fantastic service! read more

Today 11/114/2019 we made this journey. After not being able to recycle our electronics locally we drove from the Beverly neighborhood to the northside to check out this place. We are seniors and the two gentlemen there told us to just watch and not try to lift anything. They removed a 50" tv, 3 smaller tvs, 3 laptops and a printer in less than 5 minutes . This. Your electronic equipment that is old and outdated. It's easy to access this facility from the Kennedy going east a block and a half past Elston. The place was easy to see once you got on Branch Street. The people came to my car got the equipment out and we're very pleasant it took no more than 5 minutes to get the stuff from my car to the recycling plant. A five-star operation for sure read more

I am just a bit confused...... I have several cans of old latex paint, and computer cables as well as phone cables I wish to recycle. According to the name of this place "Household Chemicals and Computer Recycling Facility" you would assume you could bring your old computer cables, and chemicals such as old cans of paint, right? Well, when I called they would not accept any of the things I wish to recycle, and they sent me to Office Depot, and gave me the number of another facility which would only accept paint that is oil based. If a recycling facility says that accept "Household chemicals" but then they don't accept the old paint you wish to get rid off, where can you go? I am confused about this one. Please, can anyone suggest other facility? Thank you so much! Please, also, I would suggest for everyone to read the latest reviews of this place and not the ones from 2007. No water based paints. No latex paints. No real service. No businesses only household use. Don't waste your time. They were hesitant with the electronics too. They started getting picky. The way I see it, if you say you recycle electronic parts, doesn't that mean any electronics. Not just the one's you like most. Since the last review here on yelp says the HCCRF is closed, I created an account just to report that it is open again (I visited 4/2/2019). The building area has been cleaned and improved. Just as before, there are no queues, and the staff is courteous and efficient. They took my household chemicals and fluorescent light-bulbs. The folks at the Goose Island Recycling Facility are awesome. The other reviews already layout pretty much everything you can recycle here. But I wanted to add that the paint exchange room here also has other chemicals available, such as motor oil, cleaners, etc. So, you can bring in any of your unwanted chemicals and they will offer it up to others. Last time I was there I picked up a full bottle of Murphy's Soap, and about four large tins of quality house paint. read more
