After a meeting with my mother, and clear explanations of what we needed and her mobility issues, we got a quote from Cam at Careful Cut. After a few days of working on the project, Cam told my mother the work was done. Being a trusting person, my mom paid him. The work was not done. There was a large gap between the house and the railing (unlike the railing that was replaced) which was a major safety hazard for an elderly person. See picture. The railing that was there was splintery and not sanded. He also missed a number of spots when painting. We contacted him and asked him to complete the work. At first he said he would "see what he could do about the railing and that the door was in the way". Note that the door was only in the way because he forgot to account for door opening when building the steps. When, a few days later, we asked him again when he could finish the job , he sent a rude message then ghosted us. We had to hire someone else to finish the work. With Dean, however, billing was a nightmare and he did everything he could to extend his work -- is he hungry or something? He arrived promptly to give me the estimate, and I told him we would like to go ahead get the work done. First, he told me he would be here on Thursday and it would be a 1 day job. On Thursday, late in the morning, I called him and asked him where he was. He told me we had an appointment for Wednesday (the day before), but his other job ran late. I didn't ask him why, if that was true, he didn't call me on Wednesday and tell me he wasn't coming. Anyhow, at that point he told me he would be there on Friday (the next day). On Friday he called me and told me he couldn't make it because he "had to take his wife shopping and forgot about the plans they already made together". He told me he would come on the next Tuesday. So, on Tuesday he didn't show up. In late morning I called him and asked him where he was. He told me the forecast was calling for rain later in the day, so he could either come and do the inside stuff today (Tuesday), and finish the job on Friday, OR he could come on Friday get the job done or finish it on Saturday. I told him to come today and get started because he already postponed on us a few times and he has our deposit. He arrives later in the day and removes the old chimney liner. He dragged our wood stove onto our hardwood floor with a piece of plywood under it, by HIMSELF. So you can imagine the scratches on my nice wood floor. He leaves all the crap from my chimney in my garage and leaves a total mess! And says he will be back on Friday. On Friday I sit and wait for him. At 11:00 he is a no show so I call him and leave him a message. At 12:30 I call him again and finally get through to him. I ask him where he is and he tells me he needed to order a part and it should be here in 5 days or so. I compose myself and ask him politely and professionally why he didn't let me know that, because I had to take a day off of work to wait for him. His answer is "I don't know what to tell you, maybe you should just find someone else to do the work". So here I am, with a mess in my living room, a mess in my garage, a 600 lbs wood stove in the middle of my hardwood floor, and he still has my deposit. Not to mention he wasted 3+ weeks of my time so there is probably no possible way for me to get this thing repaired the right way this winter. HE was the one who was unprofessional and unreliable. He left a mess in my house, dirty pipes and crap in my garage (that he was supposed to dispose of), and major scratches in my hardwood floor.
