We've been using Steve at Deck Masters and Maryanne, with House Savers (for painting,) for almost 20 years. And I'm happy to say that we've had great success with them. They've rebuilt our main deck and installed 30 yards of uphill stairs in our backyard and have done numerous other repairs and deck cleaning and restaining jobs for us. In fact, they just finished a project on all of our decks and steps, which is why I'm writing this review now... and it was exemplary! The workers were efficient and friendly, and showed up and finished on time. More importantly, they did a fabulous job. I watched them from inside several times, just to check on their progress, and was pleased at the detail and attention they gave to everything, even certain areas where no one would have known about a shoddy job. They went out of their way to keep our surrounding plants clean and save, as well as other walkways or entrances. Even though we've used them many times, I got two other bids on this rather large job for us. Deck Masters were actually less than one and close enough to the other one, that it made it easy to choose them, since we knew the quality of their work from so many previous jobs. Frankly, even if DM had been higher, within reason, we would have gone with them. I'm going into more detail here because I was astonished by some of the other reviews I read. No one person and no company can be flawless 100% of the time, but given a chance, any responsible company should be willing to rectify any problems that arise. With the type of problems and challenges these guys take on, I'm pleasantly surprised at what a great job they do. In fact, back in 2008, there was a dispute about a mystery stain that appeared on our coffee table, near where the House Saver people had been working. While Steve didn't think it was the fault of their guys, he assumed responsibility and stayed with the project until he found a way to neutralized the stain...which he took care of personally. I provided the property management company with quotes from two other reputable companies for $250. If only I could give one star. Look, I won't bore you with a long list of gripes. Don't use this business! Very poor workmanship because they use unskilled laborers under the supervision of one semi-professional foreman. They literally had to come back 7 times to paint or refinish over deck areas they had missed, unevenly applied material too, or had left boot marks on! They fought us every step of the way to fix these errors which they had made. The owner is super unpleasant to deal with as well. I wanted to fire them but my fiancé said we had gone this far let's see it through. 2 years later we have multiple leaks, uneven and cracking finish on our decks, and our ceiling sheet rock is cracking and warping along the tape lines. 20,000 dollars down the drain. Seriously, do your homework and don't get ripped off. read more

My back deck had so much growth and gunk on it I had to do something. Steve quickly came out, inspected the deck and gave me a very reasonable quote. He told me how long it would take and when it would get done. His guys (who were really nice and worked really hard) showed up and the job was done, on time as promised. They did such a great job I had them come back and do my front deck. I was planning on replacing the wood on both, which would have cost at least 5X what they charged me and the decks look like new. They did a great job rejuvenating our backyard redwood deck in Marin County, CA. The work included re-seating every nail, sanding the entire surface, and applying a redwood sealer and preservative. They also replaced some redwood boards that were cracked/damaged. I highly recommend them and will use them again. read more

We're delighted with the work this company did for us. They were careful, thorough and hardworking. At our request they used a newer more low volatile green product called Penofin Verde. We were so pleased with the result last summer. In addition it has held up wonderfully all year! The deck isn't all that young but the work made it look smooth, clean and amazing (including about six new boards - which don't show differently any more.) We are so happy and healthy too with that greener sealing product. read more

We were told by two other companies that nothing could be done to restore our old redwood deck that had been treated several years ago with a pigmented water-based product. The newer boards in the shade were thick with "paint" pigment that had seeped in, and the old graying boards, where the sun baked them, were bare and gray. Matt arrived on time and spent almost an hour just to do the estimate (substantially lower than the next nearest bid), answering all my questions and detailing how the job would proceed. Their workers were amazing: power washing the redwood deck, exposed aggregate around the pool, gate and trellis, picnic table, diving board and all the patio furniture. They created a plastic barrier so that no residue from the stripping/sanding went into the pool, and they left not a trace of any on the surrounding house stucco. They did all this without killing any plants in the surrounding planters. They sealed all the redwood (deck, picnic table, gate and trellis, with a high quality oil based sealer in the perfect color. We stayed off the deck the recommended amount of time and found the dried surface perfectly skid proof, and what a joy to see the rain bead up on it. Deck Masters' hard working employees got this immense job done in just two days. Matt returned at intervals to check progress and answer any questions. We couldn't be happier with the quality of the work, the minimal time it took, and the very reasonable price! read more

Owner Steve and his crew were punctual, polite, clean (they had to access this deck via my family room), and they did a great, guaranteed job: PLUS they brought it in under budget. In SF, we have a large, four-story set of redwood stairs running up the back of our building (typical for SF). We needed them power-washed and resealed/stained. We've had it done twice before since we built the stairs. HouseSavers wasn't the cheapest (especially given the increase in all sorts of construction/home repair costs these last years), but they weren't the most expensive either. (On the other hand, part of the price difference was that others were going to do two coats; HS did just one.) In any case, they did a phenomenal job -- way better than the last two people. The power-wash was the most thorough I've seen (for houses, sidewalks, patios, etc.). The people who came out to do the staining did it quickly and efficiently, but what's most amazing is that without being asked they covered the plantings underneath, sanded all the surfaces, and rubbed in the stain (not just slabbing it on) -- even the balusters (and there are a lot of them!). This is a great, professional business. read more

I engaged then to waterproof my exterior deck and couldn't be more pleased. Matt provided the estimate on a timely basis and the work crew headed by Lalo was efficient, respectful, and as pleasant as can be. When a portion of the work had to be redone, partially caused by unexpected rain in early September, the company accepted responsibilty and did whatever was necessary to make the job right, even working on the weekend. read more

Mixed review. Work Completed was fabulous. Attention to detail incredible. Five stars for the guys who did the job. For those who plan their budgets based on written quotes and expect to pay what you were quoted, pay close attention. We signed a bid that included fine print that read if the project was underbid, we were responsible for the excess hours of their workers plus 20 percent fee. Job finished in the 3 days projected, employees turned in time cards for 29.5 hours each instead of regular 24 hours. This resulted in overage charge of plus 33.3 percent over quoted price. I paid in full since they said it wasn't negotiable. In fairness, the bill was at 10 percent overage not 20, but it's still a huge number to donate to their bottom line. Overall this experience sucked all the joy out of getting my project completed. In addition, they triple charged my credit card for the work which caused its own set of complications while being sorted out. read more

I cannot comment on how these folks do with the average job, as mine is a bit unique. I have a deck which is covered with deck 70 from Universal Protective Coatings. We originally had the deck done six years ago. After five years it was still in great shape but fading from constant sun and weather. So we hired Deckmasters to redo it last year. After they were finished we noticed that it was dangerously slick. Like glass. If wet it was treacherous. They claimed it had been done properly and were hesitant to come and see for themselves but finally did and had to admit there was a problem. So they put on a sand coat and it was great. Then earlier this year I noticed that the sand coat was discolored and large patches had peeled away all over the deck (this is less than a year after the work). I emailed them and they asked me to send pictures which I did. They then came out and looked at it. When they emailed me their response they said the problem was that my house smelled of pet urine and my dog was urinating on the deck and ruining it. I have had the dog for nine years - including during the first five years of the deck's life - and there was never a problem. The dog does not urinate on the deck as she is rarely out there unless we are sitting out there and she is with us, and it would be very hard for my little 9 pound dog to urinate on enough of the deck to make it the mess that it is (not to mention that most of this period was winter/rain so the deck got washed off by the rain or my house helper very frequently). They want a couple thousand to fix the problem. I think the problem is they did not prep properly when they finally applied the sand coat. In any event, I do not want them doing any more work for me - EVER! read more

Crooks!! The worst experience I've ever had with a contractor. Steve Hance had 2 workers install a floor for our women's locker room April 2014. The workers were fine, except that they blew the dust from the sanded floor out the door all over my facility instead of vacuuming up. Steve did not check on the quality of their work. The next week we had several people slip on the "non skid" surface and one girl had to go to the hospital with a concussion. Steve's response was that it needed "curing" time and would become less slippery. It is still slippery after 2 months and has peeled up in so many places, exposing the old floor underneath. I have called Steve and sent him pictures of the peeling floor. I have asked him to come inspect the floor to suggest a remedy. Steve will not return my calls or emails. I am being forced to take them to court even though I've never sued anyone before. Stay away from this company unless you want a headache and an empty wallet. read more

Thin skinned contractor can't be bothered when his quote is questioned. We have used house savers twice in the past on our deck and then shingles. On the last job we had some issues that were minor but never resolved. we asked for a quote for additional work and noticed it was twice what we were quoted two years ago. We inquired why and got an email stating Steve was insulted. Wow, maybe a bad day, but no way to respond to an honest inquiry, imagine if something went wrong. Very disappointed that after using this service in the past, we would be berated and basically told not to question the quote. We are all in the service business at some level, we'll maybe the deck business is so hot, that Steve can afford to turn away good customers. Watch Out, something seems wrong with this approach to customer service. read more

I cannot attest to the skill-level of the company. I can speak to the level of difficulty we had trying to communicate with them. Their bid on our job (construct two decks) was by far the lowest. The problem was that at our first and only post-bid meeting it became clear that their bid could and would be revised to an amount far higher. The question was, by how much? And after nine days there was still no answer. There was much confusion over acquiring our building permit, the company claiming they could not give us a revised bid until after the architect drawings were completed and they did not know when that might be. Today, when we mutually terminated our non-contract, we were told that we should have paid them a deposit. But without an estimate we could rely on, and without a contract, what amount were we expected to give as a deposit? I am speechless. What I can say is this. Should you wish to hire Housesavers, sharpen your communication skills. And insist on concise, clear answers from them. read more

Matt Evans came out to see me after scheduling an appointment and gave me the right advise regarding my issue with the garage outside wall that was damaged from inside due to the last storm which I thought had damaged the foundation as the water had got in and mold had started to build up! This was important to me as there were several other contractors that I consulted with gave me some horror stories about my garage wall and the floor that I will have to face some major repairs.
