I just wanted to let you know I'm about to write a skating review. I came to Houston Garden centers on Highway six and West New York on Monday purchased about $250 worth of different kinds of monkey grass. Well when I was planting on there were these little Mondo I guess miniature monkey grasses that were embedded in the flats and I didn't notice it because the big leaves were everywhere and it looked like they were all the same thing. so today I came back to buy another $250 of monkey grass to be told no I couldn't exchange these or return them because the person at the cash register who couldn't speak English just kept pointing to your no return sign no return no return no return. I said I'm going to exchange them for the right thing and buy another $250 worth and they said no no no. so I left I'm going to Home Depot. Kim whatever your name is, your service SUCKS! read more

Probably better to spend a little more and get a better quality plant and some type of service. The cashiers will also add items to your bill that you do not have in your cart. There is no recourse when that happend. Clear profit for Houston Garden Center. They will not acknowledge the mistake, No sabe nada. I went to Houston Gardens in Pearland this morning and needed some help. I ask the cashier and she looked at like me like she had no idea what I was talking about. Come to find out she didn't speak English and didn't even respond to try and find someone that did. I thought this was America where everyone should at least make an attempt to speak the language but I guess not. Great prices! Ridiculous exchange/return policy. I love hgc. They have good prices, great selections, and usually their product lasts without fail. The only "beef" I have with them is their return policy. I purchased one too many roses (the wife put one on and I didn't see it) and I literally was loading them in their parking lot and realized error. 6 literal minutes since the receipt time stamp and try said "nope. All sales are final". It wasn't a big deal due to it being a rose, but what if you bought too much mulch? Or the tree died? It's really a shame. So like I said, it's a great place with tons of selection, just a silly return/exchange policy. read more

Frequent often and typically have great service. The last 2 visits were horrible. In April, I needed flowers for a birthday celebration and arrived right before closing. Young employees watched me park and walk up, then told me they were closed and I had to leave. Missed out on a big sale. Left disappointed and went somewhere else the next day. Yesterday my mother and I (nor any other customer) was offered any assistance as we walked around for almost an hour. When approaching the register, there were 2 cashiers. I asked if we could check out with the cashier who was available and she said she wasnt open and to go to the other cashier (who was checking out a customer). When it was our turn my mother asked for a price check on a plant (neither cashier knew the answer). They then come up with a price of $16.99, the plant looked half dead. My mom said it was overpriced and left it. The available cashier was rude to her counterpart and belittled her as she trained her on the spot. Another customer appeared with the same amount of purchases and she left us with the inexperienced cashier, stating the other customer had a big purchase, so she would assist him. As we left, I realized my babys cup was misplaced, so I went back to search for it. Both cashiers were on their phones and neither looked up to address me or offer to assist. I searched the grounds, but did not find the cup. As I walked off, one mumbled under her breath and they both laughed. The only employee that did any work and actually offered assistance was Thomas. It seems like younger employees have no customer service skills or manners and do not want to do any work. I will not be returning to this location. read more

I have been going to Houston Garden Centers for years. They always have a great variety of plants and flowers. Last week I was helping a friend with some landscaping. I asked if she had a shovel and she said no, buy one and she would reimburse me. When I purchased the plants I picked up the shovel which was $20. As I was driving to her house she said never mind, I have one. I went to take the shovel back and the cashier said ALL SALES FINAL and showed me the sign. I had seen the sign before but assumed it was for plants, not everything. I could have bought a shovel anywhere else and taken it back. Lesson Learned! Will never buy anything but plants there again and may not even do that. Lowes and Home Depot have a great variety too and you can always return a shovel or any other tools you buy there. Very bad business practice in my opinion. read more

Bought a Christmas tree last Friday and here it is a week later and I have to throw it away. $80 down the toilet. The tree would not suck up water. They nailed a stand and water bowl to the tree and probably forgot to cut off a portion of the bottom of the tree before nailing it to the stand. After a day or so of having the tree the needles started falling off. I found myself sweeping up needles 8 times a day. It was too dangerous to even plug in the lights because it was so dry. Stay away from this place if you want your tree to last through Christmas. My kids wanted a real tree this year, in lieu of the artificial tree we always use. Their mother died a few months ago and we wanted to do something different. They are very disappointed that I have to throw the tree away. I'm glad I have an artificial tree that I can put up. Our Christmas tree is completely dead and has been painted green to look alive. We've made sure it had water every day. The needles fall off like crazy if you even look in it's direction. There are A LOT of Houston Garden centers and they all seem to be just about the same. This particular location has very awkward parking. If you have a large truck, park in the lot immediately to the left when you first pull in. Mulch is more expensive at these garden centers. If you have the helpers help load material for you, be nice and give them a tip. read more

While there are many places to buy plants, flowers, and trees for your landscaping, Houston Garden Center has consistently offered high quality items at a fair price. Each year when I need mulch for my beds, I load up on bags of mulch and soil at Houston Garden Center. When something whithers from the heat, and it will, this is the first place I go to find a replacement. In the fall, Houston Garden Centers offers almost every live plant on the lot at a 70% discount. With Houston's long growing season, this is a great time to get plants and trees for a fraction of the original cost. Although there is no guarantee on anything you buy, I still like to go here to find Houston tolerant plants that go along with my survival of the fittest philosophy to gardening. read more

The 2 staff members on the inside both had their masks covering their mouths with their noses exposed, and would tug on their masks to speak with customers...hello, that's the way the virus is spreading! On top of that, the service is UNACCEPTABLE! We went to the Hwy 6 location of Houston Garden Centers on Monday, 4/12/21 @ approximately 16:00 with 5 eager little ones, as our 3rd grader has been learning about compost in Science Class, and we were ready for the next step; planting some fruits and vegetables using our compost. We told the African American female with the dread locs that we had seen the commercials regarding the large selection and needed assistance. She proceeded to point with her finger in the direction of a fence and white truck, rather than moving from her spot and actually providing assistance. When I made mention that the store was nothing like the commercial, with the friendly, knowledgeable staff, a tall older Caucasian male chimed in explaining that the commercial didn't mention anything about service. The other customers were as shocked as I was. I redirected my party of 7, along with my $1,000 budget to replace the things that died in our yard during the 2/14/21 freeze, and started heading back to our vehicle. The two snickering, rude staff continued their inappropriate remarks, so I turned around and explained to them that I too work in customer service, as a Registered Nurse at a local hospital since 1996, and although our commercials don't promise great customer service, the employees working alongside me know that is the BARE MINIMUM that is expected from us. Patients and garden center customers both have options, but we do our best to keep them coming back. These two employees lost business and several customers that day. The other customers who left after hearing the two employees met up with us in the parking lot, and were of the same opinion on the situation. I refuse to reward such rude customer service with my hard earned money. More importantly, I want these 5 children to participate in building relationships with businesses in the community who strive for 5, and at least make an attempt to have great customer service. read more

I went to this place twice. Once on thanksgiving night with my mother and the next day with my boyfriend. Each time we were greeted while entering by 2 different employees. The woman behind the register answered my mother's questions about their Christmas tree special and she and James showed us the different sized christmas trees based on price. We weren't ready to buy without my guy picking up the tree so they thanked us for stopping by. Next day i went back with my guy about an hour before closing and he picked an enormous 8.5ft tree for under $120. No one rushed us and James helped us wrangle the tree to my suv and the beast has been doing well ever since. Not sure why they got such terrible reviews but my experiences were quite enjoyable. read more

False Advertising. Change price at register. They advertise 70 percent off selected plants in store. Had one row of blue daze and yellow Lantana clearly marked 70% off on multiple signs. Told at register that those plants are not 70 percent off. Showed checkout person the 70 percent off aisle signs. She said sorry still not going to honor the sale. She called store manager. Store manager would not be bothered to come up front to review and discuss. Horrible place to work. 12.5 hour day with 30 minute lunch break and no other breaks. The phones don't work at any location, so you can't call in. If you miss a day because you're sick (and can't call in because there are no phones), you get fired. So if you're in the hospital because your appendix burst or you were in a car accident, first you get fired, THEN you show proof that you were unable to come to work, and You might get your job back. read more

Went to the garden center between Westgreen and Mason on the Katy Freeway. I wanted to buy a pomegranate. What they had looked worn and perhaps dead at the top of the plant. I asked a manager there if the plants were dormant because they were only sprouting at the bottom of the plant. I asked the manager if I bought one, and it did not sprout out at the top, could I bring it back and get my money back. He said oh it will bud out at the top of the plant. If not you can get your money back. We bought one and after several days it did not sprout out at the top of the plant. I brought it back and was told I could not get my money back. Don't do business with people who can not keep their word. I will never do business with them again. read more

When picked out a tree with my children spent 60 dollars our first live tree. 3 days later tree is half dead and will not make it to Christmas. And then when they bring the tree out , you tell them you don't need their wooden legs base and ask them to take them off and cut the trunk so it drinks water !! SURE FOR $3.25 more. Please go in and pay cashier prior to us doing it !! Really I have never been anywhere in multiple states where they didn't trim trunk so tree will drink better and last longer. I've been buying my trees from here for over 7 years. So disappointed and angry that my tree is dead. Especially when I hear it's happening to soo many people. It's not the heat or other poor excuse given. My friends and family who buy trees form Lowe's, Kroger etc. are not having this issue. It's plain out horrible product. Thank you for ruining our Christmas. The tree didn't make it. So sad that they are not making this right. People shouldn't have to call to complain. Purchased a gigantic Christmas tree a week and half ago and even though I told them they did not cut off enough from the trunk, they said it was fine. Now the tree will not drink any water at all. Took less than 30 minutes to get the tree at home in water. Now its fully decorated, and gigantic there is no way to make another cut and Garden Center corporate was no help when i called today. Only rudely let me know there is no exchanges or refunds, when i wasnt even asking for one, I just wanted some answers on whether or not this was normal or what I can do to remedy the problem. They are after all supposed to be 'gardening experts'. Bought plants from them all summer, which by the way, did not flourish. My ajuga, which is supposed to be hardy and spread is barely surviving, and the mint, another hardy plant also died, meanwhile the plants I already have and some that I bought at buchanans are doing fine. Terrible customer service. I will not shop with them again and I encourage you to shop elsewhere also. read more

Christmas Tree down! Bummed #houstongardencenter. Bought tree Nov 25. Paid for fresh cut. Tree never absorbed a drop of water. Now a complete fire hazard 12/11. One ornament down due to drooping limbs. Only gave two stars because years past have been ok. Not sure if this is a supplier issue or not, but certainly not happy with spending $100+ on something that belongs in my firewood stack. read more

If you are buying a Christmas tree from them..DON'T get the $9.99 bowl they suggest for you and put on for you. When we got home and put it in our living room (with carpet) we then filled the water bowl and decorated the whole tree. Later we saw the tree looked a bit crooked, but we weren't able to readjust it bc they nail wood to "try" and make it straight. So we tried to fix it ourselves soon to realize we had a giant wet spot on our carpet from the bowl. Because what they are really doing is nailing the wood to set it "straight" to the bowl, causing the water to leak!! Went back to exchange for something else, but realized..NO EXCHANGES, NO REFUNDS! when we told them what had happened they all just stood around and just didn't really care! This place has a great selection of plants. We have a vegetable garden and their veggies are much cheaper than Lowes or Home Depot if you find them on sale. They also have much cheaper potting soil. I got out of there with 10 vegetables, two packets of seeds and three bags of potting soil for under $25. That's amazing. My ONLY problem (but its a big one) with this place is that almost NO ONE speaks English. I don't have any problem with that, but at least the cashiers and customer service representatives should know how to say more than 'debit or credit' for sure. It took forever to check out because of the language barrier. For that reason alone, I will probably not personally return to this Houston Garden Center. read more

They are so rude if you call to ask a question. I am simply trying to send someone to the store to make a purchase. You get a rude person on the phone who all but acts like she is doing you a favor by answering the phone. There are LOTS of better places to shop where you are treated like a human being. RUN go to RCW or go to Plants for All Seasons or ANYWHERE but here. Customer Service is a thing people. My kid showed up there to pick up a couple of items with coupon in hand that was mailed. They tried to deny the coupon. WELL within expiring timeframe. They had a copy of the coupon posted by cash register. Why did they mail the coupon if they were going to try to deny? Planned on getting our Christmas tree from them. Tried to call to get their hours and got a recording. The hours on the recording were their "Spring" hours.....on November 23rd. Many reputable businesses will make an adjustment in your original purchase price if they lower the prices soon after, often 30 days, your pruchase. On March 24, 2013 we purchased over $400 worth of plants at their Pasadena store and the next day they had a coupon in the Houston Chronicle for $50 off for purchases of over $250. So we hopefully went back to the store with coupon and reciept in hand. Unfortunately, the very polite and personable cashier said she was not allowed to make adjustments for purchases from the previous day. You know we won't be giving them any further business. read more
