Very very unprofessional workers. I went in wanting an application, especially after seeing "We're hiring" posters flagged everywhere. The first cashier I saw saw I had asked if they were hiring and if I could talk to a manger. she told me that I would have to find him myself. The only thing I was told was that he was walking around in an orange vest. She refused to give me his name... the MANAGERS name. After about 10-15 minutes of walking around the entire center and coming back to her multiple times, I found him. He dint say a single word to me, he just handed the paper and walked away. the level of rudeness was very unprofessional and weird. She refused to give me her name or the managers name. I wouldn't recommend seeking employment from here unless you want to laugh at what a joke the employees are. read more

i purchased mulch today from the beltway/vista location and realized when I got home it wasn't what I wanted. 30 minutes later I'm back at the same garden center with the mulch and receipt talking to the guy who checked me out and the guy who helped me load it... I asked to return it. There answer is sorry all purchases are final. Keep in mind I also bought $100 in flowers my wife wanted. lol! Never going back. Keep the extra $50. read more

I looked up the current add for 1/10/2025 for the Houston garden center and the add still says 70% off on most roses, most plants, trees, shrubs and many other plants. I went to get some rosebushes and they tell me that the 70% sell is no longer going on, to me this is miss leading on the advertising of the products they are selling. Went home and thought maybe i looked at it wrong but i did not the add still says the same on the current add for 1/10/2025. Very disappointed. I may have to report them to the better business bureau. I did try calling but they do not answer the phone and it goes to voice mail and it is full will not take messages. read more

They have pretty good plant selection in terms of volume but make sure you know what you're looking for bc these poor workers don't know a thing. They don't really speak English either. I've had to help other customers a few times lol. Bottom line, this place is good for landscapers/experienced gardeners. I had stop by and get something for the weeds in my yard and flower beds. I walked right in and found exactly what I needed. Three were many eight different kinds which made the selecting of the weed and feed easy for me. The people here are always nice and able to assist. There have only been a few times when they couldn't get to me in a timely manner that I wanted; however the service once received was real good. I can tell it's spring break because today the were crowded with Husbands and Wives. The wives doing the picking and the husbands doing the packing. read more

Make sure you look and the grass good before buying. We bought 35 squares one weekend. Put them down right away. Took care and watered. Next weekend we purchased 50 they were from a new pallet. DO NOT got to Houston Garden Center if you are expecting ANYTHING in the way of customer service. I bought $65 worth of bedding plants on 3/23 to go with the $150 dollars' worth I had bought a few days earlier...when I was leaving, my truck completely broke down in the parking lot and I had to call for a tow truck. I brought the plants back to the check-out counter, explained the situation and asked to return them for a credit. The manager came over and said "No Refund. No Credit". I explained that the plants were never more than 50ft from the entrance and promised to come back the next day and repurchase the plants; I just needed to deal with my truck right then. He again said "No Refund. No Credit" and walked away. Fortunately, I had a sympathetic tow driver, and he helped me out. I managed to get the plants home, but not without considerable effort on my part. I could understand someone bringing the plants back the next day and wanting a refund being refused. But this situation was obviously different...the manager did not seem the least bit interested in helping me out of a bad situation. It appears HGC just wants your money, and couldn't care less about helping their customers. Sad. read more

We come here every year to get our Christmas tree, and while the people are friendly enough I feel like the prices keep getting higher and higher. We got a tree that's is shorter than me, and I'm 5 feet tall, that was $50. That's crazy! Maybe that's normal, but I know last year we got a bigger tree and paid less. Tl;dr Do NOT trust any butterfly host plants from this nursery! I generally like the plants available at Houston Garden Center despite the fact that the salespeople are not very knowledgeable and nobody ever answers the phone. I am, however, extremely unhappy about the pesticide laden tropical milkweed they sold me for my butterfly garden. The salesperson assured me the plant had not been treated, but there is no question it is tainted as every single caterpillar who ate leaves or egg laid on this plant has died. Every single one. Plants purchased at other nurseries are doing just fine to sustain the population in our garden. It's ridiculous that the staff does not know that these plants were obviously treated and will kill the caterpillars it is meant to feed. I will never purchase butterfly plants from this company again and will recommend other more trustworthy nurseries to anyone wanting to grow butterflies. read more

So, so HAPPY with my purchase!!!!! I usually buy all my heirloom seeds, plants and trees online. And I wasn't interested in going to a garden center that might put who knows what chemicals on the plants. Saying that, I've had some pretty bad experiences ordering online, the only online place I trust is Baker Creek for my plants and heirloom seeds. I was planning on making an online purchase of two 4-5ft y'all loquat trees, about $100 each with shipping. However, I went to Dave's Garden online to check out the online nursery's reviews and was like, hell no! I have had dead plants/trees and major problems with getting a refund or replacement from online nurseries. I gave Houston Gardens Centers a try, already knowing I would be disappointed. But, I got two 6-7ft tall loquat trees for a total of $18.00!!!!!! I was about to lose my sh&t with happiness!!!!! 70% off my purchase, will be going back before December 2018 ends to buy more plants!!!! And get ready for this fall and spring planting next year, meaning I will already have my plants for Spring. Really can't believe the money I saved. FYI no refunds all sales are finals, but with what I saved I don't mind having a dead tree or plant in the future. This purchase was specifically for loquat trees, if you grow for food or bees/butterflies/hummingbirds be very careful where you purchase plants, it's better to grow from seeds or buy from someone you know will not spray with chemicals. These trees are very young and future bees should be okay, when enjoying fall flowers in the future. read more

This is the third time we've gone here and needed a little bit of advice and assistance. (Green thumbs we are not.) Each time we can't get anybody to help. And, each time we have asked for assistance and are told someone will be with us in a minute. Then they never come back to us. Everybody's walking around without assistance; you just have to fend for yourself. The third and last time we went here, we asked for assistance at the counter as soon as we walked in. We were told the manager would help us and the manager was pointed out to us as she approached the register where we were talking with the clerk. As the clerk said this the manager was walking up and spoke to the cashier in Spanish (we were taking to the young lady in English when the manager interrupted and spoke to her) and then she walked away without speaking to us - despite the clerk saying we needed assistance. We stood there a few minutes and finally asked whether or not the manager was going to come back and help us. The clerk then told us the manager had told her it will be a few minutes. It is unclear why neither one of them told us that until we asked. We left and will not return. Obviously the saying about insanity is true - doing the same thing the same way and expecting a different result...so, after three try's there won't be a fourth. read more

After moving into our home we wanted to do some landscaping. We were actually on our way to Lowe's when we semi got lost and ended up here. We were making a U-Turn and we saw all these flowers/plants outside and the selection was bigger than at Lowe's. The prices are pretty darn good. The service is to be desired, many of the people maintaining the plants don't know where anything else, but if you can find it yourself, you'll find some decent savings. read more

I don't know where to start. I'll start with their service. I'm semi-new to gardening. I went in to purchase soil for a raised garden bed. I gave the lady the dimensions and she recommended I get four bags of a particular brand. They were $7.99 ea or 2/$12. Turns out I only needed one bag, but now I'm screwed because they don't accept returns or exchanges. Then, a day after using the one bag of soil I went to Lowe's and found the exact brand for under $5. So, I could've purchased the soil from Lowe's for a cheaper price AND I would've been able to return what I didn't use. So, service and prices suck. I gave them 2 stars because they do have a huge variety, but even then they didn't have Citronella plants that were in their ad. Smh. read more

I attempted to purchase several pieces of grass this afternoon. I made my purchase and drove my truck to the grass loading area. There was ONE guy loading grass at the time. He was loading one piece at a time into a pickup. That customer had purchased an entire pallet of grass. There was another customer who had also purchased an entire pallet of grass. There were several other employees standing around in the parking area waiting on an 18 wheeler to get into position to do something. After 30 minutes of waiting, I went back in side and requested a refund of my purchase. I had to explain to three different people why I was requesting. She got on her phone/walkie talkie. When I returned to my vehicle after the refund was processed, there were 4 people loading grass. All the people expressed apologies, except the guy loading grass one piece at a time. Really disappointed with my Christmas tree. Not sure where they source their trees, but BEWARE. My tree must have had eggs of a small fly and now have hundreds of flies in and around my tree. They don't last long, but still disgusting and will undecorate my tree today (Dec 21) and toss it out. I tried to find customer service contact info to simply let them know that they need better due diligence on how they source their trees, but nothing to be found. This is definitely a business that should be reported to The Better Business Bureau. They dont treat or pay their workers enough for what they have to put up with. 12 hours shifts with a 30 minute lunch and sorry excuse of a lunch area. Their manager Walter likes to run his mouth to customers but won't man up to the consequences of his actions. Register ladies are nice but I see alot of needing improvement in their business. Calls to ANY location results in being hung up on after continous ringing or hearing store hours. They have no real experts and the only people who speak english dont possess enough knowledge which isnt their fault.The company hires easily to fire you when its so convenient. I wish I could give this place 0 stars. I stopped by on March 3rd and made a purchase of 3 items. One was $9.99, another was $3.99, and the other one was $4.99. My total with tax was $20.49. On March 4th the payment was processed and when I logged into my bank account the charge this place put on my account was $50.24. The receipt I was given was for $20.54. I am disgusted at the fact that either the cashier that rung me up or someone higher up on the chain of command like a manager a that place went back and increased the total I was billed for. Not only are employees at this location always really rude but now they're committing credit card fraud. If you go here and use a credit card or debit card be really careful and make sure you hold on to your receipt and check your bank transactions because I'm sure this wasn't the first time they've done this and it won't be the last. read more

where do I start. I am so disappointed I was really hoping for a better experience the second time around but it got worse. First time around, spent around 100.00, second time almost 400.00 No help around to ask questions, employees standing around cash registers and hanging out near exit gate. Tried to use coupons for 20.00 off of 120.00 purchase and 10.00 off of 60.00 purchase. A total of only 30.00 to help a customer with purchases of nearly 500.00. Checkout employee stated that it would require too much effort to help with the request. Another employee hanging out near the register said that they don't do things like that. Go see the mgr. Went to see the manager. Stated that he was only the assistant assistant. Explained the simple request to the assistant assistant. Terrible service and knowledge. Cashier appeared annoyed that she had to get off of her personal phone that she had been texting on the entire time I was there. After a irritated sigh along with the unwanted physical force it took her to push herself up off of the pallet of fertilizer she was leaning/half laying on and texting while she walked toward me and said "yes?" I recently bought almost $500.00 worth of plants, both flowering and greenery. The next day one of them of TOTALLY DEAD! I tried to take if back and they said NO REFUNDS! I told the girl I had bought almost $500.00 and they would not replace a $5.99 plant that died OVERNIGHT. She said no..................call this number. I wasn't going to waste any more of my time calling a different phone number. If they cared about their customers they would have the replace to plant. WARNING DO NOT BUY MILWEED FROM HERE IF YOU ARE RAISING MONARCHS!! IT WILL KILL YOUR CATERPILLARS! I've bought plants at Houston Garden Center in Pasadena, 3600 E. Sam Houston Pkwy South. I've never had a problem. I raise Monarchs. I tried supplementing their feeding with milkweed I bought from this location. About 30 caterpillars are now dead because of the 2 plants I fed to them. I tested it to make sure that it was the plants, and not some other outside source. Every single caterpillar that had started eating on the plants started to get sick and die within a couple of hours of them eating. When I bought the plants less than 48 hours ago, I informed the salesman of what I was using them for. He said they do not use pesticide. When I spoke to a manager, she said they grow their own milkweed and they do not use pesticide. I spent almost $40 on two plants that are absolutely useless to me. They would not refund me my money, and the manager couldn't have cared less. I will NEVER shop here again, and I will continue to let everyone know about their poor business tactics of lieing to customers and stealing their money. read more
