Incredibly rude, and don't care at all about customer service; specifically the manager. Spend your money elsewhere. Spent around $100 on a Saturday evening. Went home and realized when the cashier took out one of our $3 plants to scan, she never put it back in our cart. Went the next morning to retrieve the forgotten plant, and we were told "tough luck, you left, and once you leave there's no refunds or exchanges." I asked what I'm assuming the manager where they had Merigold's were and he looked at me and said "over there" and just pointed in the direction. One of my favorite places but the prices this year are outrageous! Are you serious? $39 $49 for one small shrub? I see a lot of people walking around but next to nobody leaving with plants! Who can afford this? OK I get it about the freeze but I didn't know Florida was affected and that's where all this dirt comes from i thought. Seems like price gouging. Not gonna buy nada until you make it more affordable. And when I come back hopefully the staff will help a little. You will recognize their red and yellow umbrella logo from their various locations around town. However, just like fast food restaurants, each location might not be on the exact level. The one here by Southwest Freeway by the Fort Bend Toyota Dealership is the one we visit, if we go. First, the place is big and have a large varieties there, there are also occasional coupons like $5 (or was it $10) off when you purchase $50 or more, and the number climbs as you spend more. They would gradually try to get rid of their inventory by having sales, like 50% around July, and 70% off by October/November. Sometimes they have built-in volume discounts like buying 10 for the price of 9. One thing about this location is that you really, have to know what you want and know a bit about your plants to be able to shop and get out in a timely manner. Reason being, unless you are looking for perennials (they are in the front of the store) or common shrub/bush like roses, azaleas, gardenias, etc. that are relatively easy to recognize, the workers you see there tending to the plants are probably not going to be of much help because they don't speak much English, and if you have something special/uncommon and specific you are looking for, they usually point you somewhere hoping you'd leave them alone, or just shake their heads. You would have much better luck asking your question to the ones wearing blue shirts (believe they are either team leaders or managers), they can better tell you where to find what you are looking for or if they have them in stock. We usually come to HGC if we have something that had died in our yard and we needed to replace it(them) really quick and we know exactly where to look for the replacement plants. read more

All the staff were wearing their masks and working hard. If you are moving stuff all day you might not be in your best mood but yet they are helpful and nice. But it is not a restaurant or a high-end store, don't expect them to babysit you. They have plenty of parking, have good variety of plants and ferts. We went to this location to buy a Christmas tree We paid 60$ of a blue spruce. The moment we got it home it started shedding needles like the Charlie Brown Christmas tree. On closer inspection, this tree has been painted (or dyed) somehow to make it appear new. Check out the green trunk in the picture. It is as crumbly as a tree in January but it is only three days old to me. I tried calling the number for this location but there was no answer and no way to leave a message. Kids are sad..... However, good luck finding anyone that speaks English. We are in The United States and I should not have to spend 30 minutes trying to find someone who can speak English. I asked one guy if this particular item was a bush or a tree and he said yes. What? Yes to what and he said something in Spanish and ran off. He brings back a lady who knows 9 words of English. I am not a fan of writing 1-star reviews. It makes me feel like a jerk and I am going out of my way to let other Yelpers know that a place is horrible. But I guess all of Yelp can't be rainbows and unicorns. To branch off of Brian B.'s review made in 2010, nothing has improved. The workers aren't willing to help you out, so if you're not a plant person...don't even bother asking for help and look around on your own. I asked for help to look for plant start kits for newbies and simple things like mint leaves, thyme, etc. The worker looked at me with a blank stare, and just said - "it's toward the front" - then continued to pretend to be working. I wanted to inform the manager, but I thought it would be useless and a waste of time waiting for him/her. The products seem okay. Like I said, I am not a gardener and I am not sure what I was looking at, but a lot of the plants seemed to be withering. Maybe it was the lighting? Every year I purchase my Christmas tree from HGC. I have always been pleased on how long the tree stays fresh and looks full until the first week of the new year, when I take it down. This year was a different story. I paid $59.99 for what I thought was the most beautiful tree on the lot. Unfortunately this year the tree began to lose needles on its own, causing my ornaments to fall off the tree. By the time Christmas day came around my tree looked sick and had a lot of dead spots, where the needles had fallen. I am very disappointed and will never purchase anything from HGC. They stated over there not offering to get me one. so I go to back of store and see what I want but unable to reach it. I drove there (35min) with baby in tow, they don't sell Bermuda grass only St Augustine (which is why I tried to call first to ask). Yellow & purple mums on sale for 50 cents per small pot. My wife and I went to buy a bag of fertilizer for the lawn and saw the mums on sale. She brought 6 pots for her garden. Houston Garden Centers has a good varieties of plants, flowers, shubs, and trees. Prices are very reasonable. There is always somthing on sale that is not advertised in the newspaper. Houston Garden Centers - Well folks - last week we took a chance to buy 8 of the 1/2 price hanging baskets for $5- each ~ the baskets looked like they needed help ~ so we asked the cashier if they did not make it if we could exchange them for new plants if they did not make it ~ if not, we were not going to buy them ~ she said of course you can exchange them ~ but no returns. A week later I returned home and 6 of the 8 baskets did not make it ~ so I went back to Houston Garden Center store #29 in Richmond, TX. and the cashier called the manager over and he said that "all sales are final - no matter what dies" - he was kind enough to give me a number to call their management - and the lady who I spoke with said she would check with the cashier who told us we could exchange the baskets - but before we got off the phone - she changed her mind and said the same as the store manager "all sales are final - no matter what dies". I am posting this because there are 2500+ new homes going up in the Veranda and as words of caution - all plants and shrubs do not take too well in this soil and environment in our area - so make sure you work with a Garden Center who will take exchanges & returns and guarantee what they sell. Several of our neighbors and friends have had GREAT experiences with: Enchanted Gardens, Franks Nursery and Big Tex Tree Nurseries. read more
