CERAMICS review - I would say for the price you're paying... you really can't beat it. But there is a lot of room for improvement here... For one; they have an inconsistent firing schedule and a lack of visibility to it at times... additionally, its only one type of firing Cone 5/6.. and the only expertise really available for you here as a beginner is handbuilding either via slab or other Coil/Pinch. There is one wheel, but wheel throwing classes are not available. Additionally, people tend to leave the tools in the sink all the time.... or leave things out...... The community is fine. Wouldn't say there's as much expertise sharing as in other communities; this is a great mostly beginner/intermediate level community. For hand building being the main thing this place has to offer I believe it needs more items that compliment hand building such as, more foam in different shapes, Weight scales, sand paper to level the bottom of an item, drimmels, etc. a lot of items that compliment hand building are missing here... read more

TXRX Labs has active black mold growing on the ceiling of their ceramics room. Seems like the roof has an active leak anytime it rains. I spoke to the instructor and staff member of TXRX Labs and received a refund for my ceramics class, which I appreciate. They blasted the air conditioning in the ceramics room but I did not feel safe or comfortable breathing in black mold for a 5 hour ceramics class in an enclosed space without windows. Please be advised of the black mold before signing up for another ceramics class. I hope TXRX can resolve this issue soon for the safety and health of their staff and customers. read more

I found out about TX/RX in passing on r/houston. I went to their website and saw they had some amazing classing for really inexpensive prices. I decided to take some classes to check it out and see if it was something I would be interested in long term and boy am I glad I did. Classes: The classes at TX/RX aren't meant to make you an expert in a day. But they provide you a great opportunity to get an introduction into something new and determine if you would like to pursue it further or if you're bored its a great place to try out something different and meet new people. Membership: There are several different levels of membership to meet everyone's needs and budget. And what you get for the price is AMAZING. TX/RX has a huge selection of tools and machinery allowing you to do just about anything you could possibly want. People: The people here are great! So many talented and smart individuals that you can learn a great deal from and are just about always willing to help in any way they can either with talking out how to do something or show you how to do it. If you want to know how to do something, there is probably someone at TX/RX who knows how to do it and would be happy to show you. Space: Huge and continuing to grow. They have a large machine shop, woodworking shop, electronics area, 3D printing, computer lab, light fabrication area, and they are about to open up a new arts space called ArtX. Took the mig I class. It was awesome! I had a great time learning the basics of mig welding.

This is a Houston treasure for DIY and carpentry/ metal work enthusiasts. We took a carpentry class and it was a fabulous experience. The instructor and her assistant were knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. They explained various tools and let us use a variety of tools through the two days of the class. Safety and good working habits were clearly defined and expectations set. The other folks were friendly and accommodating. The Labs have a diverse set of tools and just about everything that a woodworker would need. The fees were the cherry on the top, a bargain Would definitely recommend TXRX read more

My wife and I enjoy doing different things for date night (or at least that is what she tells me.) So, we have had some pretty interesting dates. This week, my wife and I went to TX/RX (both last night and tonight) for the intro to woodworking classes that they hold. The classes were a lot of fun. We got to learn or take refreshers on a lot of commonly used shop tools, learn about basic wood joinery and make cutting boards. This place has practically every tool for any project you could possibly think of, wood, metal, leather, 3D printing, doesn't matter. The staff has always been great to deal with and have readily answered any questions I had or to teach me how to use a new tool. The classes give a very basic working knowledge on how to operate a machine or to complete a task, but many of the things that they teach are skills/trades that take hundreds to thousands of hours of self study to master. This is the only place where I've felt the only thing holding me back was my skill capacity and not a lack of equipment. read more

I had a very rude instructor, Summer, this weekend. It seemed to me they didn't want people who take the classes to use a lot materials and supplies. You could only have one sheet of paper in this class, no extras, no time to go back and redo or touch up. Class was very hot, instructor did not model what she was talking about, instructions were unclear. The model poster was a space scene. We were told to come back with stencils to cut. No one was able to use what they brought from home. I'm not sure if the class was about stencil making or airbrush technique. Again, it's like we smashed two pictures together. read more

Less than positive experience every time I reach out to them. The "President" of TXRX gets abrasive and borderline emotional if you suggest something or have a question about why a class isn't offered. I'll give him credit for trying to answer, but he's ineffectual at best and ridiculous at worst. They let you sign up for classes up to a few days before-but don't bother to tell you if the class is in danger of being cancelled-don't try to plan a weekend around one of these classes, it'll probably be cancelled. It's a shame-I really wanted to love this endeavor. I still love the idea-but don't count on them to deliver; they're run more like a haphazard business than a co-op space. Maybe it'll get better over time-I'd still love to try some of their classes, but NOT until they adjust their processes. My advice: go somewhere else or contact an artist directly to learn-it's usually cheaper too. read more

I had the worst customer experience here today. I walked in to sign up for membership. There is a staff member standing by the door. He has a staff id card on his collar. There is some filming going on in the background. I cannot see anyone else other than this staff member. Here is our conversation. Me: Are you open? I am here to see if i can use the collaborative space. Staff: You can after filming is done. Then he turns his back. Me: Well, I am not a member. Staff: Why would we let you use the space then? Turns his back. Me: That's why i am here. To sign up for nembership. Staff: You can't do it here. It is done online. Turns back again. Me: Well i can do it while I am here. Silence... Well, is there anyone else here who can help me or at least willing to help? Staff- Looks around for someone else. Cannot see anyone. Says ok I will show you the studio. His tone is patronizing. "Walk here. Don't trip anything" I leave tx/rx after that. I have had a nice experience meeting the staff at the open house but this person (who had his picture on the wall across from the kitchen area and claimed to be a volunteer???) ruined it for me. read more

I found out about TX / RX by looking up Houston Hackerspaces a few years ago, and I've been here ever since. Once I found this place, I sold my house because I no longer needed a garage, now I just come here and use all the tools whenever I need to build something. read more

I stumbled upon this place while browsing on yelp and I'm glad I visited the location and actually got to take a class. I did a woodworking class and made a chopping board. For less than $100 bucks you get a class and you take the project home with you. They have all the equipments from saws to sanding paper, clamps and glues and the list goes on. I mean they offer other classes but I haven't got to them yet so I will limit my talk to the woodworking. You wouldn't find this chopping board in your local store. They also offer various membership with reasonable prices. For $50 and above you get to use the items and of course it's after you've taken the class. Safety first. You wouldn't want anyone to handle your tools without knowing how to. Would you? So if you have personal projects you can go there and do them. Awesome shop! I've taken a half dozen classes here and they're an awesome value for the price...there are other makerspaces in Houston that do not have a quarter of the tools and resources, but they cost more than twice as much for a membership! You can't allow one person to ruin an opportunity to learn new things. I have taken several classes here and most of the people I have met are great. This is the only place I know where you can have access to so many different high end pieces of equipment without paying a fortune. The different labs are clean, well organized and maintained. It also helps you figure out what you want to buy for your own shop. I probably should have already joined because you get a 10% discount on classes. I will probably join soon. I think I'm ready to start some projects on my own. Considering some of the classes I've taken from other organizations I actually feel like I can do some of this on my own. The good thing about this is that there are people here who can help you. Take a class - it's worth a shot. You might actually learn how to do something you always thought you wanted to do but we're afraid or didn't know where to go. Good Luck!! read more

I'm just putting my honest opinion, so please disagree with me if you wish I do understand. I'm currently a Senior Mechanical Engineering student and my team and I are building a cnc plasma table for our capstone project. We reached out to TXRX to see if they had space available for rent, as well as if it was possible to meet and discuss our design with them and get some input. Unfortunately they didn't have space for rent which was fine. However, the hilarious response I got for wanting to meet was that they had a $100 consulting fee to meet with their engineers. This is the first company of dozens that we have talked to who wanted to charge a local school project money just to talk. I would have been less offended if they just said their engineers were busy and didn't have time. Who charges students money for advice? Yes in the engineering world there's entire businesses who charge consulting fee's but meeting with students who wanted advice on their finalized design for a local school project is not the same. Just for reference Hypertherm met with me, gave me a tour of their entire facility in Lebanon NH, and told me if I ever needed any help or had any questions to reach out to them. I don't expect every company to be that supportive and we've had plenty just tell us no, they don't have time, but charging students money for advice on a project is a joke. I definitely understand if your engineers are busy just say it. However telling student's their only worth your time if you pay money because you're busy is a joke. read more

Really very disappointed in the way the staff treats students. I was unable to make it to the second half of my class, and when I contacted them about what I should do (re-take the class, if there was a way to finish my project, if I could move on to the wood II, anything!) I was simply ignored and no one ever followed up with me or answered the phone. This facility does not care about their students. Furthermore, I was disappointed by the very minimal instruction and engagement with the teacher. He seemed to be almost disinterested in being there at all. I appreciated his attention to detail regarding safety and a few instructions regarding wood and grain etc. but I still don't know if I could operate a table saw by myself or set a planer to the correct measurement. Although it was a very basic, introductory class, everything I learned here I could have learned from a YouTube video. They did not explain anything about TXRX Labs and the dynamic in the class was stiff. I do NOT recommend coming here for a class unless you are a youth and/or have ZERO exposure to the class topic. I really wanted to love this place but I walked away feeling ripped off and just another customer. It would have been one thing had they at least responded and worked with me to finish my project or even a suggestion to re-take the class, but they simply do NOT care about their students. read more
