I was a patient for years in the old location, which was a peaceful haven with quiet closed treatment rooms and also convenient free parking. That changed with the recent move to a large open noisy space, with little privacy. It's geared now to group activities, and having multiple patients going at once, limiting individualized discussiob. Downtown parking is tough. When I pointed out several safety issues in the new space (my field), Mary abruptly discontinued treatment and has left me without any continuity in treatment as I can't find anyone yet who takes my insurance. I cannot say enough good things about Mary Morrison. She is a life saver. In May of last year, I was experiencing debilitating menstrual cycles. Multiple doctors visits concluded that I had an ovarian cyst that could not be operated on. The "best" advice I received was to enter medical menopause -- which would just be swapping out symptoms and pain. I was diagnosed with acute piriformis syndrom. Basically, my leg was in a constant state of spasm. The doctor's recommendation was to walk as little as possible for five to eight weeks. After five weeks of sitting on ice and heat (and too much TV) I progressed a little, but I could barely walk and I was still in constant pain. The persistent pain (and lack of sleep) was a drag on my emotions. I came to Mary's practice after five weeks seeking a better way to heal. Mary is a very positive person and her compassionate energy was helpful from the beginning. After the first two sessions (one week), I could put weight on my leg. My son also commented that my posture improved greatly, a sign my muscles were responding to the acupuncture stimulation. After four sessions (two weeks) I was able to move around and greatly reduce the amount of Advil I was consuming. Even though I felt a lot better, I was worried that the sharp pain in my knee would remain; however, after my final appointment, 6th session( 3 weeks) even that dissipated. Last weekend I gratefully went for a long walk in the park. My injury was serious and painful and my doctor was suggesting steroid injections; I'm very happy that I was finally able to heal and without injections. Mary was my acupuncturist for a season, and she was great, but when I lost my insurance, she refused to provide any kind of concession at all. I asked for the discount she was providing my insurance (they paid her $75 per session), but she refused to do so, and jacked up her prices significantly. She had such a positive experience with Mary that I became interested to gain help with my back pain and general well being. After 10 sessions I wish insurance paid for many more. Mary Morrison came to acupuncture as a second career, and the passion she brings to it shines through. Mary's tagline is "We listen, we treat, you heal," and this perfectly sums up her approach. She starts every session by checking in with you about what's working in your life, and she gently corrects you if you talk about yourself and your body as if they were two different things. She also points out if any of the language that you are using about your life is disempowering, like when I told her I was "under a lot of pressure" at work. In other words, Mary's approach is not only physically holistic (relating to the body as a system, not a collection of organ systems) but completely holistic, integrating thoughts, words, emotions, and physical phenomena. She has even helped me improve my relationship with a loved one who is treating cancer with a different treatment method than I would choose. Mary has the latest training and uses all the traditional Chinese medicine modalities--acupuncture, herbs, cupping, tongue analysis, pulse analysis, and moxibustion. I leave every session much more relaxed and funnier. One of the issues I went in to see her for--tummy fat that I could not shed due to compulsive overeating--has been partially resolved. The tummy fat is gone, although I still at times overeat compulsively, a problem that is decades in the making. The other--digestive distress--is also improving, though Mary has pointed out that my sensitivity is a gift (because it provides information on how things affect me) and not something to be fixed. I've been seeing Mary as an acupuncturist for a couple of years and have been consistently amazed at not only her ability to treat the problems that I come to her to help me with, but also at how much her practice and her skills have grown since I began seeing her. I was skeptical of acupuncture at first, especially since the first acupuncturist I tried wasn't very good. However, Mary truly knows what she is doing. She helps you identify what's bothering you, and is able to help you release those feelings, whether physical or emotional. After each session I feel relaxed and clear headed. Mary has a wonderfully calming way about her and is a natural healer. I've been to other acupuncturists but have been seeing Mary since 2013. Previously, acupuncture sometimes helped me but often didn't. With Mary every treatment brings about some positive change, often a large one. I go as regularly as I can. I was a little apprehensive the first time I came here. Not because I do not believe in alternative healing (I certainly do!), but because I was afraid of being stuck with hundreds of needles. Well, my apprehension disappeared after the first few minutes. Mary is wonderful. For those who have never had acupuncture, the first half or so of the appointment is like a therapy session and the second part involves the needles. Once you've identified some of the issues (for me, it was recent hip discomfort that initially brought me in), the needles activate your body's healing ability and help to purge you of the extraneous things that make you feel unlike yourself. Mary is very forthcoming about when she is about to put a needle in, so there are no surprises (she inserts on your exhalation). There is very little pain when the needle goes in and any discomfort disappears immediately. Mary leaves the room and lets the needles do their work for 10 - 15 minutes. The best part of the experience is how relaxed and present I feel after the session. I feel like my natural self, not the stress and anxiety-laden person I become during a hectic week. Mary recommends doing 8 sessions to start with the option of returning for more sessions when something arises. I can't imagine not doing acupuncture on a regular basis though.
