Unlike The Home Depot and Lowe's, they have employees that seem to actually want to work. Although I go to The Home Depot and Lowe's more frequently, it is only because those two are more conveniently located. I get the easy stuff at those locations. But when I have questions or need help finding the right product, I go to Howard Brothers where the employees make an effort to be knowledgeable of what they sell. Prices are a little higher, but you won't find yourself going back-and-forth exchanging what you purchased the first time making a return and purchasing the 'right' product on multiple trips. The Home Depot and Lowe's have gotten so bad, even the employees tell you to purchase 2 or 3 of something, try them all, keep the one that works, then return the ones that did not work. As far as that goes, I may as well just order stuff off websites which give you equally unhelpful knowledge of what you need. Yep, I'll continue to drive past The Home Depot and Lowe's to get to Howard Brothers when I know I need help or have questions purchasing the correct product the first time. read more

Called Customer Service to inform them about a friend who needed to grab some screws a few minutes before closing. The receiver was very rude and harshly snapped "No!" at the request. My Friend still made the drive and was refused service despite having 2 minutes before closing. If you're looking for quality customer service, this isn't the place. read more

Very helpful and knowledgeable people working here! The store has a large selection of inventory for most needs. They helped me cut a key for my 2004 Toyota Camry. Unfortunately, the first key was cut a little too deep and didn't allow the key to turn while in the ignition, but they got me right by having another key in stock and cut more shallow just in case. Key fit perfectly and worked! Charged far less than a locksmith or dealer which was the best part. read more

I have made a few visits and service is decent. It does have the neighborhood hardware store feel to it ... mostly. My last visit I needed a spark plug for a riding lawn mower. The gentleman behind the counter was initially standoff-ish because I only had the lawn mower model / serial and not the engine. He eventually became more accommodating and looked up the engine model based on the lawn mower model and service significantly improved. I recommend they lead with more accommodating service because there is plenty of competition around from larger retailers. I'm willing to make the journey here if they consistently provide that neighborhood feel to service. read more

I received a paid invoice via email from Howard Brothers. I needed information about the invoice that was not provided. So, I contacted the establishment. I asked who made the purchase and they had no idea. I then asked how it was paid and they told me it was paid by credit card ending in a number that I do not have. I spoke to 2 or 3 people before I had any understanding as to what happened. It seems that the invoice belongs to another company with a name similar to my company. At the end of the conversation I was told, "that I was wasting their time". Not a very professional way to treat a paying customer. read more

Again, Howard Brother are always there when the big-box stores are not. I am often working on oddball automotive projects that require odd size fasteners, and I got tired of trying to piece stuff together at two or three of the big places. Howards always has everything I need, and the quantity to meet my needs. I have yet to be let-down by this place, and for the reasons I mentioned in my first review. This location of Howard Brothers continues to impress me with customer service, and the amount of stuff they cram into their little stores, and that stuff isn't crap like the other places. I just need to find the time and intestinal fortitude to purchase a Big Green Egg from them. I am often distracted by their display when I visit. Evil temptress! Their service department is on-par with their showroom as well. IF you can't find something, then they'll get it or it simply just doesn't exist. Deal with it. Very disappointed. Paid $70 more for Presure Pro dirt laser pressure washer than it is listed for on Walmart site. Supposed to be new but not in box and parts missing. Acted like in a hurry to get rid of you after you notice what is missing that they did not mention. Assured they would get parts and send them to me. Nothing, no calls and no parts. They got my money so now i am screwed. Pay first come in and wait in lot and see what you get wheeled out. Once you notice what is missing you call back inside and wait for someone to come out and admit they knew stuff was missing but did not mention. DON'T GET THE SAME TREATMENT. Now I wish I had just bought the Generac online and skipped the miserable Howard Brothers Experience. Now I will let everyone know about Howard Brothers and Pressure Pro brands. read more

Not only did they help me with my decision of mowers but they took the time to discuss options with me, worked with me on delivery in an insanely timely manner, and showed me how to use my new Cub Cadet mower... I texted a question later to Brian who delivered my mower and he answered back! Think you get this at a Big Box?! Personal service?! Talk about your home town hardware store. This is a old town store that seem like it has been there for a hundred years. They carry just about everything that you need for your home repairs. As soon as I found the location of what I needed I was quickly asked if I needed help. Not being able to whittle a key copy by myself I was helped with that. After that task was complete I had to wonder the store to see what they had. I will be building in the area so I did some early project hunting. Terrible customer service. First I alerted the manager that their mower for sale shouldn't be parked in the striped lines for handicap spaces he said he agreed but did nothing about it. Then my mother and I had picked out a few tomato plants and were looking at others to purchase when a teenage girl came up and started watering the area. It was very windy and we were getting wet so we asked her to stop until we were done shopping. She responded that she had to water them and kept doing it. I spoke to the same manager who then came out and asked her to wait, she had a fit and stormed off. He then turned to us and said they had to be watered. Due to the lack of customer service and being made to feel unwelcome, we put our items back and left. As 25 year Duluth residents and Howard bro shoppers, we won't be going back. read more

My wife gave me a very nice chain saw for Christmas she had bought from Howard Brothers in Duluth. I was planning on having some men come over this weekend to clean up some trees back in our woods that fell in some of the storms we had last fall. I went to start up the saw just to make sure it would start and I could not get it started. I took the saw back up to Howard Brothers. I explained to the gentleman that offered to help me the above story. This was Johnathon Murray. What a class act. He took the chain saw apart, checked it out and then we had a Training Session. Johnathon said they usually give training sessions when a customer buys equipment but equipment that is given as gifts are a challenge when it comes to training. Thank you Johnathon. Seriously, terrible customer service. Don't even get me started on their service dept. they literally sold me a brand new two thousand dollar paperweight. My exmark mower has broken down after only a few months of use, and then they blamed me for it even though I took care of the machine as recommended(filters, spark plug, oil change, blades, ect), they only honor parts of the warranty they absolutely have to. On top of that my machine broke down again after being out of their shop for only 3 days, This time oil and gas is leaking out of the air filter, seriously WTF. Bought a Scag walkbehind one year ago NEW. 4800 bucks. I am a 1 Mower operation for 10 years and very busy, Hydo knob will not engauge blades. I took it back last week and explained my desprate cituation. They didnt care . I called the manager of the store . Same responce. Stopped by today and was told it would be next week. I have never written a review, but after my experience today I was completed to post this one. This is the second time this has happened, so shame on me. I am a residential homeowner, not a commercial lawn company. Each time I have taken my mower in for a backlap service for $70.00, but after a few days I get a phone call. Sorry, but you I really need a full blade grind ($140). Both times when the mower was returned the bill was over $225.00. "Oh, you also needed new chains" or today "Oh, you also needed a new back plate". No advance noticed, nothing. Today, when I got hoodwinked, I asked them to point out where this new plate is located. It was clear to me, they removed the old plate, filed it down a bit, replace the screws so it appears to a replaced. BUT, IT WAS VERY CLEAR THIS WAS MY OLD PLATE. NOTHING NEW ABOUT IT. After discussing it with the counter rep, it was clear I was getting nowhere. My little residential account means nothing to them. I also get the sense they think the residential customer is stupid and will pay whatever they say. Like a dishonest mechanic looking at your engine. read more

They wasted 1.5 hours of my time and 40 miles of driving. Their website says they repair pressure washers (and specialize in Honda small engines). I call and tell them what model I have and confirm closing time and I'm told to come on. When I arrive, the service manager announces that they only work on equipment you buy from them!! Common courtesy would be to advertise this fact. They'll never get my business for anything, ever. read more

We bought our Honda mower from them, always had it serviced here. Recently, we had some work done to it, got a quoted price. Got a text saying the work was done and the amount had doubled. Went in and spoke with the manager, Murray Johnson. Without hesitation, he apologized and said that was not right how it was handled. He took off EVERY single additional charge (even though the work HAD been done and did in fact need to get done.) This is what I call superior customer service. I look forward to taking our mower back for its annual service, and I highly recommend them for their honesty and quality service. The force is strong with this one. read more

Was helped immediately upon arrival, explained my Stihl blower wouldn't start, they could have checked-in the blower but instead smelled the gas, dumped it and put in fresh gas, and voila it started and runs fine. Besides my embarrassment for such an easy fix, hats off to Howard Brothers and the guy working the service counter (Fr, 12/2 @ 2 pm) for great customer service. Just excellent customer service! I had a brand new chainsaw I received as a gift that just wouldn't start right out of the box, and the manufacturer (a "BlueMax" chainsaw from North American Tool Industries) was completely unhelpful when I called their 800 number, saying it was a bad ignition coil (basically told me I needed to take it to an authorized dealer, the closest of which was 2.5 hours away, and pay to get it serviced to work - - right out of the box! or they would sell me the part for $12 plus shipping, and I could try to figure out how to replace it, without instructions). I'd taken chainsaws to Howard Brothers before and knew they also serviced them, so thought I'd give them a try; even thought they didn't service my brand, the service guy (believe his name was Jordan?) still tested the spark plug and ignition coil for me with a tester he had, and figured out they were fine but there was a problem in the fuel line. He tinkered with it for 10 or 15 minutes and got it running, but wouldn't accept any payment or tip! I was so happy with Howard Brothers I bought a few other things while I was there, and would recommend them to anyone. read more
