During a recent 10-day hospitalization at St. Francis Hospital, I had Dr. Tawfik for the latter…read morepart of my stay when he took over for the physician, from his same practice, who had provided most of my care from day one. I believe the reason for the change had something to do with the upcoming holiday and the other doctor's vacation. To be fair, Dr. Tawfik had a tough act to follow. I really appreciated the other physician. She was warm, communicative, thorough, and always seemed to be advocating for me throughout my stay. I felt like I was in good hands and I appreciated that she took whatever time I needed to be sure I understood what was going on and her recommendations. While Dr. Tawfik kept largely the same time schedule and did communicate, it was more abruptly and without the warmth and detail of the previous physician. He spoke in "lingo" rather than in simpler terms that those from outside the facility or from outside healthcare would understand. He wasn't cold, but he just lacked the ability to communicate compassion as easily and I didn't feel as comfortable that he thoroughly understood me or my case. Dr. Tawfik ended up overseeing the end of my inpatient stay and my discharge from the hospital. I must say that for a hospital stay that had been filled with so much compassion and quality care, the final day was filled with chaos and a remarkable lack of clarity. I put much of this on Dr. Tawfik, who came into my room in the morning and informed me I'd been denied one potential option for discharge. His question to me was "What do you want to do?" He offered me no other options and the only thing I could think of was going home, though I certainly didn't feel ready for discharge and he gave no impression that discharge would literally be that day despite the symptoms I continued to have. He also stated that he intended to appeal the denial, but appeared to have not done that. Within an hour, my discharge order was written with no clear explanation of options or what was to come. Unfortunately, both my nurse and aide for that day were new to me and didn't quite grasp my case and weren't sure how to advocate. They offered to suggest that he pursue the peer-to-peer review, which he had assured me he was doing. I also later learned there were lesser level of care options we could have pursued, though he explained none of these things. It just felt lacking in the compassion that had so defined the rest of the stay and left me going home into a home where I would be alone with no clear options given the holiday weekend that was coming up. It felt like poor discharge planning and very weak patient care and advocacy. Overall, I don't believe Dr. Tawfik to be a poor physician and I don't think one rough day completely derailed what had been an overall positive stay. However, given a choice, I definitely would not be followed by him and should the situation arise again I would definitely request a change.

My first appointment, they were very thorough and made sure to explain everything that would be happening. I was able to ask questions and get the answers right then. The treatment I had took much less time than I expected. The endodontist was quick but does quality work. My dentist praised their work when I came back for follow ups, saying they did a great job--and usually do. My second appointment, they seemed less inclined to explain everything and more interested in getting things done. I had a mishap where I wasn't given enough numbing and felt a jolt of pain through my tooth while they were working. I'd told them I needed more than most people--genetic thing, unfortunately. He said he would give me more than he usually did, but not as much as the first time since they weren't doing as much invasive work. They said they didn't want me numb all day. But I'd rather take longer for it to wear off than feel that in the middle of a procedure. I was a bit miffed since I told them my needs multiple times. I mentioned I could feel something uncomfortable as they were propping me before the endodontist got started and the assistants made it sound like it was normal to feel it because of the type of tool they were using. It obviously wasn't because I then had the jolt of pain during the actual procedure. If I have to come back at some point, I'd advocate more forcefully for myself in that regard. But again, that was my only problem. They were very professional, kind, and didn't mind me bringing my weighted blanket or wearing my headphones the whole time. The end result was good according to my dentist. So I'd still recommend them.

Now that it's over I fell like a goober for how scared I was this morning. I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to the dentist...going to the endodontist would be a nightmare. Let me tell you, getting a root canal is not bad at all! Or maybe it's Dr. Ramsey and Annie! They brought me in and took great care of me. I was in and out in an hour and most of that was X-rays because Dr. Ramsey wanted to make sure the packing was perfect. I hardly felt a thing! Even now that I'm not numb anymore, I don't have any pain! None. I've always heard horror stories about root canals. Mine was a piece of cake. Seriously, I've had fillings that were worse. I cannot recommend Dr Ramsey enough!

The practice is located in one of the office buildings directly adjacent to St. Francis Hospital on Indy's southside right on the Indianapolis/Greenwood line. The multi-level building is easily accessible, though as I recall it did not offer the valet services common to Franciscan. There's a load/unload area as parking in the Franciscan parking lot is pretty much a nightmare, though the parking lot is well lit and I've always felt safe there. The doors to the building are power doors, though the doors to the practice located on the fourth floor are not (as is usual for medical offices). I found the door a little heavy, but mostly workable. The practice recently located to this space on the fourth floor of the building. From what I understand, the goal was to expand and better serve. In other words, this was an upgrade from the previous setting. However, as a new patient of Dr. Webb's I had no experience with the old setting. I arrived in the waiting room early - as I'd not yet been released to work, I'd gotten a ride and wanted to make sure I'd arrived on time. We checked in and were seated in the waiting room. If there's a physical weakness to the practice, it's that the waiting room is dreadfully inaccessible. I mean seriously. There's basically one or two spots you can sit if you're in a wheelchair and I could not wheel through the aisles to get out of the way of the door. This could easily be made accessible, but they're not there yet. As people started to arrive, it definitely felt small. I will admit I kind of wondered how this could possibly be an upgrade. Our call back was close to on time - the nurse did the usual check-in activities. She was professional, though you can always tell a difference in the personality of surgeons' offices versus other specialties. I think they like to feel like it's "professional," but it definitely lacks a personal feeling. I was taken into a small exam room - barely room for a wheelchair to turn around. There were no lower tables or anything that would allow for exam. This was especially weird in my case since I'd had an amputation and would have had difficulty transferring if needed. The doctor examined me in my chair and took out the stitches. It is worth noting that five stitches were actually missed - which could be a big deal and would have been avoidable with decent exam equipment. The exam was quick, though I covered most of that in my physician review. As healing was largely positive, I did not require a second appointment but would, of course, follow-up if further complications would arise. My visit to Vascular Surgeons of Indianapolis was perfectly fine. It accomplished the task, but I couldn't help but feel like greater attention to accessibility would be helpful - in both the waiting room and exam room. As I was certainly not in every exam room, I can't speak to whether or not a better option is available - just what I was offered. I appreciated that billing was prompt and accurate. As someone facing a lot of bills due to a recent amputation, prompt processing has allowed me to maintain a clear picture of my responsibilities. I had no issues with the financial aspects of this visit.

DISCRIMINATION!!!!…read more I've been coming for years and up until January '23 I have felt discriminated against. I've been scheduled twice in the past 3 months for a cleaning and a tooth extraction and they have done neither! They claim things will take more time so they can't do it, like my cleaning in January. At that time I also scheduled a tooth extraction for March, did I receive that? No. I guess they take blood pressure now unbeknownst to me and couldn't give anesthesia because my blood pressure was "too high." I was given a referral to go somewhere else to get a root canal even though they have an Edodontist on site because I looked it up. They'll do all the x-rays in the world, but won't treat me. A complete waste of money. Just ridiculous. I'm sure they're happy I won't be returning and the feeling is mutual.
