Hello. This Entity is Extremely Unprofessional. Their staff now or at the time of my interactions with it could not careless to rectify a situation they caused. They'll blamed for their Lack of professionalism it on President Trump, timing, yourself as the patient and so much more. There is no Form of any accountability anywhere at the Facility. They have a number to complain about the service there. No one at that said number even does the bare minimum. I never got a resolve, from the woman who over sees the program, to another woman who talk to me more than the people at the location even did. Both did Absolutely Nothing. All because I had wanted to switch my Dental student. Even at Lincesed Dental offices a patient can ask to change their Dental professional. To be up front, this review is from the perspective of a historian visiting the old site of Griffith Stadium. I was not a patient here and can't speak to that, but if you love history the historic Griffith Stadium stood here back in the day. During segregation, it was one of the few places in the city that welcomed all. There's a sign outside the hospital that speaks to its history as well as signs inside. I am writing regarding my experience in the Emergency Department at Howard University Hospital last night. I arrived severely dehydrated and actively vomiting, seeking urgent medical care. Instead of reassurance, I encountered an environment that was chaotic, unprofessional, and deeply concerning. Upon entering, the individual stationed at the podium was dismissive and unwelcoming. I had to ask if I was even in the Emergency Room. When someone presents visibly ill, the initial interaction sets the tone for trust and safety. That tone was not established. The staff member who collected my insurance information and listened to my symptoms was kind and professional, and I appreciated her demeanor. Likewise, the male nurse who took my vitals was compassionate and respectful. They were the only aspects of the visit that reflected what healthcare should look like. Unfortunately, the triage area told a very different story. A triage nurse was loudly yelling at a homeless woman who was clearly in distress and attempting to get assistance. Regardless of the circumstances, this interaction lacked professionalism and compassion. Watching that unfold while feeling physically weak and ill made the experience significantly worse. The "waiting room" -- essentially a hallway -- felt overcrowded and visibly unclean. The overall environment did not reflect the standards one would expect from a hospital serving the nation's capital. Emergency departments are inherently busy, but disorganization and poor conditions should not be normalized. After being told the wait could extend up to six hours, I ultimately chose to leave because I did not feel confident remaining in that environment. No patient seeking emergency care should feel that staying would compromise their well-being or dignity. I am sharing this not simply out of frustration, but out of concern. This institution carries both community responsibility and national visibility. Patient experience, professionalism, and facility conditions directly impact public trust. I sincerely hope hospital leadership reviews these concerns and takes meaningful steps to address them. read more

2/2 I then requested the information to the manager in charge of the surgical schedulers, to which Belinda was reluctant, Belinda stated "hold on, I'm going to try and transfer you over to her, all of her information and contact information will be on her voicemail so you can get it there" and proceeded to place me on hold. After waiting on hold for 2 minutes she came back and said she would transfer me and that was the end of my conversation with Belinda. Belinda had been reluctant to give me the manager's contact information, and after being transferred over and listening to Ms Lila William's voicemail, I realized her contact information IS NOT provided on the voicemail for me to be able to follow up with her or try to reach her via email or phone again. I have also gone ahead and called the clinic to report the sudden change, and left a message with the director of the Clinic in an attempt to receive some sort of resolution or assistance in this matter. We are not a family who likes to complain or jeopardize the care that is already limited for patients like my Grandmother who are uninsured. However being a medical assistant in a community clinic myself and having had experience with surgical scheduling, I simply cannot continue to allow the disrespect and lack of communication to jeopardize my grandmother's declining health. read more

I hate to be sick or injured like most, but this is one of the best hospital stays I ever had (Lenox hill is the best). This is DC best hospital to me. Even the food is delicious. The doctors are great and the staff truly cares. They gave me every test to make sure my injury was diagnosed correctly. I even have a great view of DC. read more

Here at HUH for the first time for a dermatologist appointment. When I walked in the front door, the man behind the information desk called me over and gave me a sticker/badge to wear inside the hospital. I said it was my first time here and was looking for Suite 4300 to see the dermatologist. He mumbled something under his mask, and I asked him to speak up as I couldn't hear him well. He mumbled again and I had to ask him to speak up a second time. Finally, he spoke loud enough for me to understand I needed to walk to the back of the building and take the rear elevator up to the 4th floor. Once I got to Suite 4300 it wasn't much better, unfortunately. The two ladies behind the check-in counter looked up when I walked in and then looked back down at their paperwork. I walked over, said hello, and said "I'm here for my appointment to see.." and was immediately cut off. One of them said, a bit curtly, "We'll be with you in a moment" and went back to her paperwork. I stood there for a few minutes until one of them put her papers aside and asked me for my name and ID. I got checked in pretty quickly after that as I filled out all my info online ahead of time and was brought into the back within a few minutes. From that point on, it was smooth sailing with a really great nurse and doctor experience. Solid appointment overall, but the first two interactions I had with the information & check-in staff both felt awkward. It was like I was bothering them by just being there doing what one is supposed to do when they come in for an appointment. First impressions matter, and I think it's important for any hospital to staff those frontline positions with friendly and helpful folks. read more

At Howard physical therapy department they'll double book patients and turn away the one that comes in second. They gatekeep the care needed even though the billing staff drops the ball reaching out to your insurance provider. Their motto must be PAYMENT BEFORE CARE! The doctors are great quality but they hide behind a group of hustlers. Now I see why Howard has a bad rep; it's about the quality of the office staff and how attentive they are with their patients.(they're not they talk to you like they work at the DMV) You have better luck as self insured...but they'll let you bleed out before they let you see a doc without swiping the credit card. Patient experience was the most abysmal I've ever seen. Have to wonder if they are even looking at their ratings in whatever system they use to measure it. I witnessed one staff member call for another patient. The family member with that person replied they needed a wheel chair. The staff member responded "I don't have one." Family member told staff member "she can't walk." At that point the staff member walked off without saying anything and came back and stated "there's none available." And left. It was about 25 minutes later before that individual was finally wheeled back. After having waited already for several hours and seeing that we decided to go elsewhere. read more

I have called five times and they have transferred me and the people who have assisted me have been talking on the phone with relatives while they had me on line waiting listening to their conversations and then taking my information and telling me that another person will call me to give me the appointment. read more

Dangerously egotistical and incompetent medical care. My fiancé and I came to Hoaward U Hospital ER this week because my fiancé was experiencing a kidney stone. The doctor told him he needed a CT scan immediately to rule out appendicitis. This is not my fiancé's first kidney stone, so he knows how it feels, and he knows the usual procedure. He asked the doctor about doing a urinalysis, which is the usual first step before moving to a CT scan. My fiancé was reluctant to do a CT scan at all because they are extremely expensive and he always reacts horribly to the reveal dye they use. The doctor, whose bedside manner was already extremely brisk, became immediately condescending and dismissive. "And when the urinalysis comes back and doesn't show blood, what then?" My fiancé responded they usually do a blood test or ultrasound first, and if nothing shows, my fiancé said he would go home and wait another 12 hours to see if the pain persists before agreeing to a CT scan. The doctor said that he would have to sign something stating he agreed to be discharged against medical advice and left. About two hours later, after regularly asking about the status of the urinalysis and having to prod anyone to do anything, one of the nurses came in and handed my fiancé four sheets of paper - the results of his urinalysis. I asked if the doctor was going to come in, and she seemed almost surprised that I expected the doctor to come in and explain lab results to us. Another half hour passed and I went to find the doctor myself, who also seemed surprised we wanted to see him again. He walked in the room and said, "yeah so there was some blood in the urine" [the test result was "LARGE" for blood, when it should be negative]. Stared at my fiancé. My fiancé asked about another indicator that came back positive in the test, and the doctor said "oh, is that in there? yeah, that can mean kidney stones." He then walks out of the room. I had to go and find a nurse to confirm we were even discharged, or what the hell was going on. We didn't sign anything, my fiancé wasn't prescribed anything, he wasn't even really diagnosed. This doctor clearly just wanted to bill our insurance for a CT scan, and when it turned out he was incorrect about the appendicitis, he just decided he was done providing care. We are lucky that this was not a more serious situation, because this man's egotisitical approach to providing medical attention could have extremely serious consequences. read more

I went to Urology for an appointment and sat for 2 and a half hours waiting to be seen. Once seen I was sent to labs to have blood drawn. Completely different experiences, because of Corie McGhee in labs. She was awesome! Kind, wasted no time in ushering me in and through the process. All staff in this area were great. Made me decide Not to report the Urology Dept. Doctors for their inability to effectively communicate with their patients. Very unprofessional!! Where do I start? Admissions barely knew how to register my information. I almost missed my appointment because of how long it took for them to enter everything. Once I finally made it to the department I needed to go to, all the ladies at the front desk seemed to have an issue with me being there. It gave "mean girls." I asked one of them a question and they scoffed as if I was already supposed to know the answer...I wouldn't have asked the question if I knew the answer, lady. Anyway, I was the only patient in the waiting room and once the nurse came out to get me, all of the ladies at the front desk gave me the nastiest look...you know, the kind of look where they look at you from head to toe and once you leave the room, they talk about you like a dog. I made awkward eye contact with all of them before I just let out a nervous laugh and followed the nurse into the room. I got through my appointment, which seemed rushed and when I tried to ask the nurse questions about my results, she cut me off and said "I'm not a doctor, I'm just a tech." I understood that but her tone was so rude. Fast forward a week later, I called my primary doctor to see if they received my results yet and to my surprise, they hadn't received anything. My doctor faxed them TWICE about my results with no response so I called to see what the issue was. I was on hold for 30 minutes when a receptionist finally clicked over. Once I finally began to speak, she cut me off and told me that there was still somebody else ahead of me. I had to wait another five minutes. When she finally clicked over again, I began to express my issues and YET AGAIN, she cut me off and told me she was going to transfer me. When she transferred me, the phone rang twice before getting sent to voicemail. I left a message, and I still haven't received any information about when I'll be receiving my results. Overall, this experience was super ghetto and I don't see how this place could pride themselves in being called a hospital when all the staff is rude and nasty as if this is still high school. If I could give this less than one star I would. read more

My daughter had a 14hr surgery with on 10/28/24. Prior to coming from out of state, we read reviews online and did not find anything positive. While we knew Dr. Hayes-Dixon was the best, we were a bit uneasy about HUH. We prayed a lot and God gave us peace that HE was taking care of our daughter and the situation. We got here 10/27/24 for admission, and from the moment we walked through the doors, we have been met with the best! Everyone has been friendly and helpful. Our daughter has had top notch care with excellent nurses and staff. As a nurse, I love that even the charge nurses are doing bedside shift report and all of the directors/managers are rounding on patients. This is something I would love to see happen at my hospital. I believe it truly improves patient safety, care, and satisfaction. We are so grateful for everything and everyone! read more

I received amazing care from the Howard emergency room. I came in with a broken and dislocated arm. The orthopedic doctor did an incredible job resetting the bones with his own hands. I was truly amazed by his strength, compassion, and precision. I was there for about 5 hours, but that didn't seem unreasonable because there was a lot they had to do, including two rounds of X rays - before and after the resetting. All of the staff I interacted with were incredibly kind and supportive. My only complaint is that it took an hour and a half between the time they took my vitals and gave me any pain meds, but I do think there were some patients in worse shape than me. read more

Criminal hospital. Nonexistent care, incompetent staff, building is in shambles as well as unsafe and unsanitary. They have almost no in house proper care, so there's no reason to come here since most types of care are not supported. They also seem to be body stacking and cutting corners to milk extra money - alot of extremely unethical and illegal practices. Stay far away. read more

My visit to HU Hospital was increadibly disappointing. The security personnel were unhelpful simply directing me to take a ticket and wait without any further assistance. There was no proper intake process, leaving me to wonder how long it would take for my number to be called, only to face more waiting once checked in. Given the negative experience right from the entrance, i wasnt willing to risk enduring further poor service. Consequently, I left and sought care at MedStar Emergency, incuring both time and expense to get there. HU Hospital, please imporve your service standards and reputation because you suck. read more

It's heartbreaking to witness the level of care the staff provides. I've had family receive care here and every time I've come the wait is 2 plus hours. I'm listening to the physician read from the chart and it's evident they're unfamiliar with what's happening. Doctor Conn keeps coming in interrupting with other cases without giving attention or acknowledging the patient in the room. It looks like an intern or volunteer run situation. I'm thankful for what they're providing to the community but the level of service is not good at all. read more

Top notch specialists and doctors. Horrible nursing, staff, amenities and overall facilities. I only chose this hospital because I wanted to be seen by a highly recognized surgeon for my extensive ACL repair surgery. My encounters with the amenities and the majority of the staff outside of the surgical team, were very disappointing. The hospital bathrooms, cafeteria, and waiting room appeared less than sanitary. The nursing staff/administrative staff were incredibly dysfunctional. For such a nationally recognized hospital, we expected more. I went in for surgery at 2pm. At 4:45 my mom told me that all the staff in the waiting area got up and left to go home. The receptionist told my mom that if the surgeons needed to get ahold of her they would call the desk phone and that she can go back there to pick up any calls. That is outrageously unprofessional! After no updates around 7pm she had to call the general hospital front desk for any updates. When I woke up, I felt the nurses were very aggressive in my handling and seemed rushed. There were several moments where I started sobbing after the operation. I was super parched and hadn't had water in almost a day. I would ask for ice packs for my sore arms and no one was listening to me or helping me or even looking me in the eye. People were talking at me but no one was listening to my immediate needs. I was constantly asking to see my mom because I knew she would advocate for me, and they kept saying she was on her way or that the surgeon was talking with her (which was not true, they lied) and time kept passing. Finally, when I was about to get released, the hospital pharmacy was already closed but were we instructed to take pain medicine that evening to help me get to sleep which was very frustrating. If they anticipated surgery to end before the pharmacy closed they should have given me a few pills to take home or given the prescription to my mom to fill while she was waiting. After we got home, my mom spent two hours running around DC at night trying to find an open pharmacy that would give her oxycodone at like 1am. Again, for a highly recognized hospital, we expected more. We paid so much money for this procedure. I recommend going to a cleaner facility where they have a proven record of showing respect for patients and their family members. read more

I use to work at the hospital. It was embarrassing to work at this hospital. The staff in some departments like patient registration are very rude and unprofessional and so is the cafeteria staff. My future mother in-law came down with a UTI.. it was late at night so we decided to come to HU hospital.. please don't make the same mistake we did. The patient intake procedure is equivalent to something out of the movie Blood Diamond or like you'd see in rural Afghanistan. There is absolutely no privacy.. two non-English speaking rude nurses lazily take your information in between their dinner break. After about 2 hours of waiting with the most downtrodden citizens of D.C. cozied up next to you... it'll be your turn. Maybe they'll diagnose you correctly.. or maybe they'll tell you to come back tomorrow if you don't feel better. They should burn this Soviet era building to the ground and start over. Seriously.. a prestigious University like Howard should be ashamed to have their name associated with this facility. read more

AVOID HOWARD UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL at ALL COSTS Had I known what a terrible healthcare organization it was, I would have asked the ambulance to take me anywhere else! Wish I could give a minus score. Howard University Hospital has got to be the worse hospital in north america. Business trip in D.C. ended with taking two ambulances to get to a nearby hospital. That was strange enough, but to arrive get placed in an empty hallway with no medical attention is worse. First 7 hours was just waiting to be seen! At first I was put in a gurney - which helped elevate my broken leg. But within 20 minutes, they move me to a wheelchair. At least I could put my swelling leg up. But then they took that away an hour later and told me that another patient needed it. They put me on a regular chair with a box to balance my leg. 7 hours like that! The halls, walls, and every room I was placed in was dirty and smelly. I saw one nurse for 5 minutes during my first 7 hours. No vitals taken, and it was 6 hours before I got a blanket in a chilly hallway. I did find a manager, Mr. Ramirez, who apologized that they were busy, but still no help. Can't find anyone to help you go to the bathroom (I never got there) X-rays after my 8th hour and finally, handed crutches and informed that I could leave. No help to the exit -- as I was told to practice my walking with crutches while going out the door. Damn hard if you don't know how to use them - and no instructions from the staff. What a shame to have such a dirty and mismanaged hospital in the US, let alone in our nation's capital!! read more

Ward 4 North has the worst nursing staff. Howard could be a good Hospital if the nursing staff was better. WHAT THE CALL BUTTON FOR? WHY DO YOU NEED A PATIENT TO SAY INEED ASSISTANT AND THAN IT TAKE AN HOUR TO COME AND SEE WHAT ASSISTANT THEY NEED. It could be something simple that take one minute. I spent three weeks in this hospital and was discharged twice in worst shape than I was when I was admitted. I fell down due improper installed equipment and I lost my hearing. So I was deaf and unable to walk. read more

Yeah, it's got issues. But, it also has - much to my pleasant surprise - some great docs. Do whatever you can to avoid calling the main line. You will be placed on hold, you will overhear conversations, you will be ignored, and you will be disconnected. Find a direct number and keep it handy. And yes, sadly, if you are white, you're going to feel all kinds of out of place and may, well, basically, experience reverse racism. However, all that said, there are some really great, pleasant, caring doctors here. And that brings the rating up significantly. Overall, the hospital itself is just a-ok. There are worse and there are better. It's not as rundown as others in the DC area. And it's actually pretty easy to navigate. Waiting areas are rather unkempt. But patient rooms are just dandy. read more

A good friend of mine was taken by ambulance to HUH and spent a week in the SICU. Initially I was quite worried of the care that he'd be receiving based on their given reputation but I have been nothing but ecstatic with the overall care and interactions with their medical teams. Don't get caught up with the negativity when it comes to trauma. This hospital is one of the best and would go there immediately - if I knew the SICU team would be watching over me. read more

This review will be short since there are too many details to explain, but basically I went to their ER for food poisoning and something more severe. My ER nurse was HORRIBLE and wouldn't help me unless I said the "right" things. I was undeniably in pain, and when I didn't answer her questions, she said she couldn't help me and would come back when I could answer her. Therefore, she didn't give me anything to settle my stomach or any type of pain killer. I had to notify a doctor to change my nurse before something was done. However, I must preface that there were some nice people who did make an effort to make my stay somewhat pleasant. I will also say that once I was admitted into the hospital where I stayed 3 nights, the staff was okay. read more

I went to this ER four weeks ago because I thought I had a UTI. I got there at 5:00pm and sat in the waiting room for six hours, after they told me I would be seen WITHIN THE HOUR. While I rotted away in the ER (& peed 8 times in the five hours), there were multiple instances of entire police squads coming into the waiting room to fight off drugged out patients. There were so many cops that i briefly questioned if I had mistakenly arrived at a police precinct. Maybe, if there were as many doctors as cops, the quality of my care would have been better. Regardless, when I was finally seen at 11:00p.m., they administered a UTI test which came back negative, gave me a prescription (that I couldn't actually get filled), and sent me home on the last green line train of the night. Then, four weeks later, I went to my primary care doctor because my problem got so much worse. The UTI test shockingly came back positive, and I got the prescription I needed and feel much better. Hopefully, the infection has not spread to my kidneys by now. The bill for my 7-hour Shaw-Howard ER visit was $1900. read more

This is the most DISGUSTING facility that I have ever entered. Filthy, smells horrible, dirty and unkept. The staff gave minimal information to locate the person I was looking for in the emergency room. Their service and communication was not helpful at all. We were harassed by other patients that appeared to be under the influence, and security was no where to be found. By time I made it back to the persons room, I was absolutely disgusted by the lack of upkeep in the room. She's sick for crying out loud. After only 5 mins of sitting with her, a nurse escorted me out the room (and was very rude about it). And don't get me started on the parking. The ONE visitors lot was locked. We were told to try to park at the back of the building and had to walk all the way around in the pouring rain because of course, the back of the building was locked. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. read more

My daughter entered herself into the hospital at 11:10 am and was not seen by a professional until 6:30 in the afternoon, was instructed to use medical instruments on herself when performing an internal ultrasound, and was not seen by a doctor until 10 on that night. Staff was difficult to operate with and very rude. When first arriving doctors said she needed to be seen immediately for the severity of the instance, recommend 2 hrs minimum by the doctor (She was not seen till seen till 6hours later). She did not exit the hospital until 11pm after being seen by the appropriate doctor at 10. Overall assessment was did not find anything when, but when seen by a doctor days after results tending to the patient came back as assumed. Overall very unprofessional would not recommend coming in need. read more

I feel bad for whoever is staying in this hospital right now. I went to go visit a friend there and I saw a ROACH walk across a hallway! The nurses are polite but VERY slow, they take there time with everything even when someone is in pain. If u want good medical care send ur friend or loved one somewhere else. UPDATE!!-- This hospital just gets worse and worse. My friend was suppose to get a minor procedure today just to remove something attached to his kidney from a prior surgery. They told him to come back today at 10am. They won't do it!!!!
