We hired Howie to paint the exterior of two small 4-unit condo buildings in Royal Oak. The buildings are each two stories high, with a significant overhang around the two buildings, plus attached single-story garages. Quite a bit of brick, which we obviously don't paint, but a fair amount of wood trim, composite soffits, and a total of 8 large (2-car) garage doors. We got quotes from 3 painting contractors in the area; Howie's quote was the low bid, but not suspiciously low. We called three references that he provided, got very positive feedback, and gave him the job. He couldn't start immediately, but did start in about 4-5 weeks, as promised. He brought in a carpenter, who had to replace some wood trim damaged by woodpeckers and the weather. That cost was separately estimated, and his work came a little less expensive than I had expected. Howie and his small team did a good job with the prep work, power washing everything to get the dirt and major paint chips off the building, then a lot of hand scraping. (Fortunately, he didn't try to avoid the scraping step by power washing the heck out of everything.) He primed the wood as necessary, laid down a lot of caulk, then masked off the windows and brick. He sprayed the paint on the prepared surfaces, then (very importantly), back rolled the painted surfaces to ensure the paint was covering well and sticking to all of the surfaces. Howie went above and beyond, painting the interior of our front foyers (one per building) as well as some below-ground windows inside some window wells. No change order for that! The place looks great; he got the job done on time and on budget. Note that his original quote specified what I view as a high-quality Sherwin Williams paint, rather than some cheaper contractor/spec product. He was able to cover most surfaces with only one coat. I'm hoping it'll hold up well. The cost was very reasonable, even with the expensive paint. Howie knows what he's doing and is easy to work with. I recommend him without reservation. read more

John/Howie RULES. He did an incredible job painting several rooms in my Ferndale home (which were formally various colors of the rainbow). Not only is his work flawless and reasonably priced, but he's very knowledgable on the subject and was more than willing to suggest quality brands and pick up paint on my behalf. I scheduled an appointment for a Saturday to get a painting quote for some rooms in my house and roughly an hour before my appointment I was told he got tied up in a job and would have to reschedule. Totally understandable, I was happy they reached out to me and let me know what had happened. She told me they would call back on Monday to reschedule since the office was closed on the weekend. Monday rolls around and nothing-fast forward a week and still nothing. I will not do business with this company because they obviously do not know how to run a business. read more

What an excellent experience we have just had with Howie's Painting. The job that he and his crew did was done promptly, on schedule, reasonably priced, and with such attention to detail. We hired John aka Howie to paint our house's exterior. We had several companies come by the house to take a look at the job and give us estimates. Howie puts you at ease from the outset, as he is very approachable and is happy to answer your questions (however basic the questions may be. This was our case, as we are lay people to painting) and give thoughtful advice and suggestions about the project at hand. In our case, we selected a bold color with custom trim requests. At no point did we feel that Howie or his crew were hesitant about it or not up to the task. They met our project with their own excitement. We were very impressed by the extra time he and his crew took after hours on their own time to research our specific type of house siding to address a particular concern about them. He even called a colleague whose expertise is siding to get us more information. After letting us know our options and what to expect, he left the siding decision to us without pressuring us one way or another. If you have to be away from home at work while the job is being done, he and his crew take extra care. At one point, there was a question of a possible smell of gas, and they contacted Consumers Energy to make sure all was ok. We did not have to take off from work to come home and address the issue. Thankfully, there was no gas leak anywhere. The theme you notice in this review is that Howie's Painting goes the extra mile. We are planning to hire them to paint our interior second floor whenever we get around to it. The enthusiasm Howie has for the job shows. It was pretty cool seeing before and after pictures posted on his company's website and seeing that other people via their comments noticed the quality of the job as well. That demonstrated the excitement and care he takes in his work. Have John out for an estimate when next you have a paint job to do at the house. We highly recommend you hire them too. You won't be disappointed! Also, leave some cold refreshments in a cooler outside if it is an exterior job in the summer. We recently moved into a new house and had them paint the Master Bedroom, Kitchen, and Front Entryway/Hallway/Staircase. We couldn't have been happier with the results and the pricing. They knocked it out of the park every step of the way. The only small issue I had was getting the work scheduled and took quite a while, but it was during the busy spring/summer season and well worth the wait for the pricing and quality. Once they were actually doing the work, everything was done super quickly and efficiently, they had our whole project done WITH wallpaper removal in 4 days. Alas, despite the enthusiastic referral of a friend, and the glowing recs on the internet, we were sorely disappointed. We were seduced by the very reasonable rate (compared with a highly recommended more expensive painter). Given that we had to pay to get things fixed (John insisted on one coat of paint and the previous coat showed through) and also given the damage he caused to our blind system (he didn't record which blinds went where, removed the hardware, and then when it came time to re-installing crammed things where they didn't fit and caused damage to the hardware), we ended up paying the difference. Also, despite his cheerful disposition in the beginning, he was less than straightforward and didn't get back to us to fix things. Admittedly, he was very busy and had a personal issue (which he eventually shared with us) but still he never returned to us after that initial explanation (which is why we went to the more professional company in the end to fix). At the end of the day, nothing tragic happened (it's only paint and walls) and we chalk it down to learning a good lesson about home-ownership. read more
