Take your vehicle somewhere else. even the dealership. I called after reading very good reviews, said they would easily beat the dealership cost of 5500. in the end, with no additional surprises found... 5100. not worth it to me. but it gets much worse. When I get my vehicle back after 3 weeks.... it now has a new issue never happened before. I brought it back and they did not understand what I said the issue was, so another 3 days, problem still exists. other small things... my engine needed major fix (timing chain replacement). got my truck back after 3 weeks, engine cover in the back seat (was on the engine when I brought it in)... no windshield wiper fluid (seems for 5k they could have checked and put some in). customer service there is a joke, man running the office talks down to you. they knew I left unhappy... owner gave me a call... I told him the truth with 4 letter words. he said a bunch of fluff.... about how it's not the way they do business, etc, etc. even with a warranty, my truck will never go in that shop ever again. thankfully the warranty is transferable. overall.. the original issue is fixed... so far. but with the new issue (dies when starting sometimes) and the little things... I have 0 confidence in their ability or management. update after owner's response 7/24 yes, original timing chain repair SEEMS ok. with the little things missed/overlooked and the new issue I now have on start up, I have 0 confidence in what was done and whether or not it will last. a new noise occurred just yesterday... leads me to believe my truck will be back in a new shop soon. I brought it back to them and they not only didn't fix it, didn't understand the issue or even try to understand. regardless of what may or may not be addressed... the confidence is gone and should be seriously considered by any new customers. had I read a review like this, I would have looked elsewhere and not been in this situation. I start my truck up and wonder if it's going to turn over and whether or not it'll break down anytime. read more

Can't say enough good things about HTC Automotive Repair. Fair, honest, and trustworthy. We stopped in after my car started blowing smoke out the exhaust after a hike. We live quite a ways south and were looking to understand if it was safe to (slowly) drive the vehicle home. Despite not having an appointment they immediately took time to look at the car for us. They provided a complimentary inspection, thorough consultation and even diagnosed a different issue with the vehicle that we hadn't been aware of. I am so glad we stumbled upon the shop. Not recommended. I usually get my Hondas serviced at dealers, but as the cars age, I seek out independents. We had our odyssey in for oil change and tpms replacement. I knew we were in trouble when my wife texted they were pushing bizarre upsells to clean out previous oil. When an estimate of $650 to replace the tire tpms monitors ( after a $150 diagnostic charge!!) I told her to get out of there. $240 for an oil change is my lesson to never go back. I was charged $375 for them to tell me I needed my battery and alternator replaced. when I told my friend who is a mechanic he told me diagnosis usually run around $100. i ended up getting it fixed somewhere else for half the price that they tried to charge me. read more

Save yourself a lot of time and money. This place is a total rip off. They did a brake job for me and told me I needed new rotors, I told them they were replaced on my last brake job and should be able to be turned. They told me they don't have the machine to turn the rotors so they have to replace them. What I didn't know at the time was that the auto parts store less than 2 miles away will turn them for $10 each. But instead of getting the turned they charged me $525 for new rotors. Then when I got my car back it had another problem that was not there when I dropped it off. So I had to bring it to another mechanic to get it fixed and Hontoy had to pay for the other mechanic to fix what they broke. There are several other mechanics in Boulder to go to that won't rip you off. read more

These guys are fucking AMAZING!! They have consistently been able to fix up my beater of a 1999 Civic. Most recently my car was having issues with idle fluctuation and stalling out in neutral, to which they tried tons of stuff. It even got to the point where when they called Honda, they told them that even they have no idea how to help. But after all that they somehow still got it fixed! Highly recommend these guys as they're great at what they do, friendly, loyal to their regulars (have given me discounted rates and have saved me hundreds if not more in free labor) and they figured out my puzzle of a car. read more

Loved the place when Jim was the owner. Felt burned by the new owners with my first introduction to them and would feel leery dealing with them again. When I had my last oil change, I was told there was an oil leak and I should get it looked it. Took it to Hontoy and was charged $150 simply to look at it and identify the leak source which was the main seal. Jim would have never done that. The price of looking at it, wouldn't have applied towards the repair either, so it felt like they were ripping me off. I've asked many other people if they thought that was a normal practice and everyone has either said no, or that if there were a charge it should have been much less than that. I'm truly sad to lose my trusted mechanic of several years. read more

My motor and regulator for the power window broke and needed to be replaced. They were very nice and helpful and got the job done but when reviewing the bill I looked up the part they added and they charged me 400% that if the most expensive one I could find in retail. I recognize that I hey need to up-charge some but this is a little ridiculous. read more

HonToy Care is terrific. I have a 10 year old Toyota and have taken it to Jim since before the warranty expired. Back then, he helped me troubleshoot a problem with the alternator, which was fixed for free by Toyota (warranty). Just a quick update on Hontoy - 3 years on from this review, an additional car being brought to them and the same great service. I once had a minor snafu and not only was it resolved quickly and easily, Jim went out of his way to make sure I was happy with the result. They take their customers seriously and always deliver great service, quickly and affordably. Very happy to have found someone we trust with our cars. I really like Jim and Bryan's shop. I've been bringing everything there from a Honda sports car to V8 Toyota trucks for service for 10+ years. Both were service managers at Honda and Toyota respectively, know their stuff and give good work. They have early hours to help get your car in before work. And if you have one of those unfortunate "big bills" at least they give you a pint of Boulder Ice Cream (neighbors of theirs) to offset the pain :) Highly recommended. read more

Maybe I should have investigated reviews since ownership changed, since it seems like there has been a drastic change. As far as I can tell, the repair on my car was done as expected, but that remains to be seen. However, when I went to pick up my car, I noticed that the tire pressure light was on and I found a brand new screw in one of my tires before departing the parking lot. I had dropped my car off 3 days prior without any issues, so the screw either came from their test drive after fixing my car, or most likely (considering it's a brand-new screw) from their own shop. I was told that the area outside of the shop is a public driving area and that the Roots Music Project located next door is likely to blame. At least they put air in my tire so I can now go and get a tire replaced. One would think that HonToy would be willing to work with a new customer when they most likely caused damage to my car, but that didn't happen. read more

Total rip off!! I went in for a general check-up and alignment for my FJ Cruiser before pulling a trailer across the country. Due to my upcoming move, I was eager to get any potential issues with my vehicle squared away. My car was making a light but noticeable squeaking sound, which I described to the mechanic, to which he responded, "It's likely the squealer from your brakes." Although I didn't think the noise was metal grinding on metal, I decided to wait for the diagnosis and trust that. They called me back to tell me my rotors were "shot" and i would need a full brake job. I was working and preparing for my move and didn't have time to challenge it. I didn't have access to the former owners records at the time, but I now have the maintenance receipts and the previous owner got new pads and brakes resurfaced only 24k miles ago. No way were the rotors "shot." What's worse, over $1000 later, I pick up the car and the NOISE IS STILL HAPPENING. We drive around the parking lot and after the mechanic finally hears the noise that I brought it in for in the first place, he says it's probably the ac compressor or drive belt making a little noise, either way not a big deal. Then, he proceeded to not fix the issue that I brought the car to him to resolve, despite clearly ripping me off (I now know it's just a dirty serpentine belt. God.) Long story short, he took my brief description of the issue, diagnosed it based off of that without even looking at the car, then proceeded to charge me $1k in work for that initial diagnosis because he knew I wouldn't know any better. I have a Toyota Highlander that I have been avoiding maintenance on since I haven't had anyone I feel comfortable with to work on it. I was really thankful when I was referred to Jim. I took my Highlander to him for the first time today. He gave me an honest diagnosis of what the car needed and didn't make me feel bad for being a neglectful owner. He was straightforward with prioritizing the work that needed to be down. His pricing is competitive and he completed the work in the time he said he would. I took my car here 3 times but can't deal with the owner so won't be going back. Jim Waugh thinks he's a real ladies' man; every single time I came here he looked me up and down and made comments about my appearance - from the clothes I was wearing to my hairstyle/color. Totally inappropriate and creepy. I was very uncomfortable with the way he would leer at me every time I came in. He tried to be flirtatious (I think he's married so what's going on there) and when I wouldn't respond in the way that he wanted, he got testy. Maybe the men who go to him have different experiences but as a woman but I can't recommend this place. There are plenty of other garages in Boulder that treat women with respect and that would be happy for the business. Steer clear of this one. read more

I have a 2002 Honda Civic that needed the front struts and mounts replaced, a side mirror replaced, and some 90,000 mi schedule maintenance. Hontoy quoted the mount and strut replacement at $1,200, the 90,000 mi maintenance at $700, and the mirror replacement at $250. I elected to have the 90,000 mi maintenance and call around for a better deal on the other work. All the places I called quoted me lower than Hontoy, including the mechanic I ended up going to who replaced my struts and mounts in the front for $600. While at this mechanic, they popped the hood and discovered Hontoy had forgotten to put the dipstick back in two weeks earlier and my entire engine bay was covered in oil. Also, I looked around online to replace the mirror on my own and found it for $25. I admittedly don't know much about cars and was totally swindled at Hontoy! read more

I bought a used Honda 2 years ago which needed a timing belt change. The previous owner agreed to pay for it if it was done by his mechanic (HonToy Care) using parts that the previous owner supplied. The timing belt change should last 90,000 miles/6 years, however less than 10,000 miles later the timing belt needs to be replaced. I took it back to HonToy Care and they wouldn't offer any warranty/guarantee of their work since they didn't sell me the parts (they didn't mention this when the work was done) and they wanted me to pay them $600 AGAIN to install a new timing belt. Since they didn't do it right the first time and don't back their service, there's no way I am going pay them $600 to do it again. Poor quality work and no integrity! I'll stick with Hoshi motors in the future. They stand behind their work. read more
