Discrimination against people with disabilities. I brought my van in for several things They agreed to do 1 hr Diagnostic service for $185 with an engine issue. After 10 min it became clear they needed to get into the doghouse I have a conversion van so this meant moving a lot of stuff around. I also have a musculoskeletal disability, and it took me about 20 min to move the vast majority of the stuff which needed to be moved, which was a lot for me, I'm still in pain from it, but I did it because that's what needed to be done, but then I always need help with the 70 lb RV refrigerator. 2 min to do for an able bodied guy. mechanic agreed to do it Then they came back and said they couldn't get to the diagnostic stuff that day. And that if I came back: 1) They'd charge me $100 extra for moving the 70 lb RV fridge in and out. 2) They'd charge me twice as much as they had quoted for 1 hr diagnostic. When asked why the front desk drone blathered something about extra time getting in and out of the doghouse. which takes 5 min. I've taken this van to 6-7 mechanics over the years. When the doghouse has needed to be accessed, this has always been the process. It's never been a problem before. I go out of my way, even injuring myself, to do what I can. And then they help with the RV fridge, which only takes a minute. The Americans with Disabilities Act explicitly states that "reasonable accommodations must be made for individuals with disabilities" To charge them more than twice as much is to punish them for having a disability. The fact that most people with disabilities are socio-economically impacted makes this doubly unethical. Whatever good qualities this shop has, Discrimination agains people with disabilities makes the difference and earns them a 1 star review. read more

Top technicians in troubleshooting! I have been going to Pellman's for several years now and highly recommend their services for 'any' vehicle you may own. They have done a fantastic job in diagnosing several unrelated issues with my 1986 mustang GT. With a car that is 38 years old, it is extremely difficult to pinpoint failed components because of the age of the car. When I arrived in the Colorado, I didn't know about downshifting and blew out my front brakes. I took my van to Pellmans. They charged me $2100 to fix my brakes and a few other minor repairs. I contacted other mechanics both here in Colorado and back home in Maryland and found out that they definitely overcharged me. The same repairs at the other shops went for $500-$700 less than what Pellmans charged me. I also talked to locals who cringed when they found out I took my vehicle to Pellmans. "Yeah, they overcharge," is what the majority of people I talked to said. But the story doesn't end there. A short while later, my right front brake locked up. The caliper was bad. Now Pellmans didn't work on or replace the caliper which I found out to my dismay after I had the van towed to another mechanic who accepts the Technet warranty that Pellmans offers. The other mechanic didn't accept the warranty because Pellmans didn't touch the calipers. Now I'm not a mechanic, but after a severe brake blowout, I would think that you would check and see if one of the most important parts of the braking system was working properly. So in summary, Pellmans is not above taking advantage of travelers in desperate need of help and will severely overcharge you given the opportunity. Response to the comment below: Yes, looking back it seems you did try to call me...once. Guess I wasn't important enough to leave a message, huh? As for the premium parts being added due to the weight of the vehicle, my van is still well below the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Translation: you upsold me on the parts you did not consult me on. You never recommended premium parts to me, you just added them. Also "just to be clear," I mentioned above that there were other minor repairs done above that you suggested and made it seem that I absolutely needed done. Pellman's is great- but for a price. I've always experienced top notch customer service for the oil changes and other services I came here for. Three stars because they consistently charge significantly more then other auto shops in Boulder. To change my spark plugs they quoted $500- I called another shop (with equally great customer service) to compare and they quoted me $300. All in all, a $1700 total bill at Pellman's was quoted at $900 by another reputable shop in Boulder. I would recommend because they do great work- but understand you may be paying 30-40% more for the same quality of service. read more

I have never been so burnt by such a miserable company, I have wasted money on 8 tows, over 3 years because of an ongoing issue I have spent multiple thousands of dollars on. In the end the service manager told me that I have a "Problem car" but the point of the matter is that they put a defective fuel pump into my car, that ended up profusely leaking from the bottom. Both my sales tech, and the service manager we're rude and unhelpful in getting this situation resolved, and after 8 months of having my cars check engine light on, and them RESETTING THE CODE AND TELLING ME MY CAR WAS FIXED. I am still not able to register my car or legally drive it. Not only would I not suggest this company. But I would also like to make you aware of DAN and MARK'S absolutely poor service and communication consistently through out this terrible experience. If my car was/is a "problem car", that is a dialogue you should have had at the start of fixing this problem, not 8 months after the fact. I will be reporting this company to the better business bureau. My car clearly had over 200k miles on it. and you have been servicing it for the last 3 years, any dialogue about my car being a problem car would have held any value at all, if you would have told me not 8 months into trying to fix a single problem on my car. Went here to here to get an alignment and new tires/rims installed. Got a quote on the phone prior to arriving. I was apprehensive since the quote was a bit on high end. When we got there, I noticed the shop was more like a business office, which isn't typical of an auto repair shop. You don't even see the repair side. I'm thinking, "This place is gonna be $sspensive!" Was greeted by Dylan. He remembered me from our convo for the quote. Since we didn't have a ride after drop off, my daughter and I had to sit in the waiting area. Dylan was conscious of the wait and squeezed us in to get my car tended to next. The staff was very courteous and offered us donuts and drinks. They even gave us a separate space for social distancing, which was very nice if them. Dylan came to me for things he wanted to point out and kept me notified of all charges. At the end my car was well taken care of and the pricing was fair. I was happy with my experience here. Quoted me an asinine price for basic work on a 1996 Ford Ranger. Pellman would not incorporate diagnostic charge into repairs if I selected work to be done, which is industry standard procedure. I did not even need a diagnostic, as my father was a Navy mechanic and I already knew what was wrong with the vehicle. I live in an apartment currently, so I could not do these very basic repairs myself due to apartment regulations. Quoted me $1950 for front and rear shocks, replacing filler neck and putting in new fuel sensing unit. The lady that quoted me was incredibly rude and acted as though I was wasting her time by asking for an itemized list of charges. Long story short; Pellman Auto is clearly trying to exploit the residents of Boulder based on their perceived affluence by over charging them. I went to Louisville Tire and Auto and had the work done for $900 less than Pellman quoted. My truck is now running tip-top and I am glad I shopped around. I gave one-star because I value excellent customer service and honesty; Pellman provided neither. read more

EITHER INCOMPETENT OR LYING MECHANICS. PLEASE take your business elsewhere unless you want to be ripped off and have parts incorrectly replaced. They priced my friend's low-beam replacement at $800 and said it was going to take 2.5 hours to replace her lights. Very confidently stated she had "ultra-expensive" HID lights when in fact she did not. She was ultimately able to replace both for $35 and 15 minutes of her time. Either incompetent or trying to rip her off because she is a kind, soft-spoken women. Either way, you don't want to do business with them. They should be reported to the BBB. read more

I brought a 2002 Toyota pickup I had just bought in to be inspected and repairs recommended. I was suspicious when the recommended repairs were to cost me $3223! So I shopped around. Comparing just one of the recommended repairs (timing belt replacement) with two other shops confirmed my suspicions. Both shops (including the dealer!) quoted much less for the same repair: $900 vs the $1200 Pellman's wanted. I ended up going with a repair shop in Ned who has the reputation of keeping old Toyota trucks going, and paying only $381.96 for the repairs he recommended, including an important problem (U-joint) Pellman's missed. The truck is running great, and I am very relieved to have found an honest and competent mechanic to keep my old truck running! My advice would be to get a second quote if you've chosen to try Pellman's. They may do great work, but their quote for me was definitely MUCH higher than it should have been. You only get to try that on me once. All three of my vehicles will be serviced elsewhere from now on! read more

I don't usually post feedback, but I think our experience at Pellman's demands it. Initially, we went to Pellman's for a diagnostic, confident that they would get it right because of the good reviews we found on pages like this one. We planned to accept repairs from them once we returned from a quick road trip too. In short, we did not return to Pellman's after receiving a second opinion. In fact, we were shocked and dismayed to learn that they both misled us and failed to catch two critical issues with our car. Just to list a few surprises here: -Pellman's said that we would need to purchase new bump stocks for our Jeep. Apparently many Jeep owners don't even use bump stocks because they are essentially unnecessary given the build of the car. -While deciding when to get our repairs done in consideration of our time restraints, Pellman's said that if we didn't get a wheel bearing replaced soon, it could last another six months, or we could see our wheel flying off of our car, down the highway in front of us. A trusted mechanic friend in Washington informed us that that could never happen with a Jeep--it was literally impossible due to the structure of the bearing. -Pellman's uses a digital profile page to document all of the issues they diagnose, and they diagnosed a whole lot of 'em with our car. One issue that they documented was that our dislocated shocks were so bad that they had burst through an underlayer of the floor of the car. They posted an image to support this claim--one which was utterly false. In Washington, our mechanic friend let us look under the car at the area where there was supposed to be some kind of gaping hole. Nothing but a scratch. I don't know where Pellman's got that picture, but it wasn't from our Jeep. -Pellman's didn't catch the significant damage that our rear end's worm gear had sustained due to low differential fluid/a differential fluid leak. We could see the worn-away teeth of the gear with our own eyes. This was a serious (and dangerous) problem that could have resulted in *non-functional* rear breaks and certainly would have brought us back for many repairs if it hadn't been addressed. -Pellman's also somehow didn't notice that the brake line for our rear left wheel was twisted downward, cutting off brake fluid circulation. If I saw them again, I'd ask them what the hell they were doing. But I don't plan on seeing them again. I was not impressed by Pellman's. Their staff is very friendly, but I cannot recommend their quality or professionalism (unless we're talking about quality professional crookedness). read more

Sadly, Pellman's service has deteriorated, and I will go elsewhere. I have been going to Pellman's for over 20 years, with several types of cars. While a bit on the pricey side, they had been very thorough and rarely had to return for a job half-done. My latest (and last) experience was with brakes, where I was very explicit about weak and unreliable stopping. I was told all was OK, only minor adjustments were needed -- oh and by the way you may need a whole bunch of other unrelated stuff done, on the order of another $2k. I left assuming I might be overly picky -- after all Pellman has never failed me before. I returned, again explaining there is something wrong with the brakes, they are not as responsive, uneven and pumping is required. Again the same answer was given, including more work should be done unrelated to brakes! I did specifically ask about the possibility of failure in the master cylinder, calipers and brakes fluid. In retrospect I should have been much more insistent they check certain parts of the braking system. I had a close call in Gunnison a month or so later, so I went to a local shop asking them to look at my brakes. Low and behold, I had a stuck caliper on one side and uneven pad wearing on the other! After the work was completed it was a 'night and day' difference, as braking was even and solid -- no more pumping and corrective steering. Pellman fails to listen to the customer, and in the case of THE MOST important feature of an automobile -- the brakes -- they dropped the ball. I hope Pellman reads this review and takes a serious look at their protocols and thoroughness. read more

These guys are ripoff artists. Here's one example: They wanted to charge me $250 to replace the thermostat in my 2000 Jeep Cherokee. I happen to know that this part is easily accessible at the front top of my engine and takes 2 bolts to remove. Yes, you do have to drain the cooling system fluid and replace it and bleed the system after, but the thing is, they already had to do those things because they were fixing a job they already botched a couple days earlier (which left me stranded). So $250 to easily install a part which coats them $10 (itemized as 35 on the invoice proposal)? Okay, fine, make a profit on the part, no problem, but where is the rest of that proposed $250? There's a reason that Pellman's has the highest star rating in Boulder. They feel like a great old-timey honest garage that you can trust. Our little family had both of our cars refuse to start on the same day and Pellman's came through to get my wife back on the road in time for her work the next day. Their system for communicating with the customers vie email or text makes things very smooth and when you call them for an update (and you're frazzled from juggling a baby and no working cars), they're great at talking you through it. Over the past 20 years of being a car owner, Pellman's has consistantly given me FIVE STAR SERVICE. I have used multiple car repair services and I know that they are top notch. I have been taking my 2002 Jeep Liberty to them for 3 years, now. Pellman's is keeping the art of service alive through there attention to detail, follow through, and follow up. MY MOST RECENT EXPERIENCE: The last time I was there, it was because my engine needed to be replaced. Being faced with having to replace my engine was overwhelming, especially since we were still recovering from the Colorado Flood which destroyed everything that we owned but the clothes on our backs. They were caring and understanding of our personal circumstances. They really worked thru the process with us. Since then, they have called to check in on how the car was performing and to schedule my follow up appointment to check over the work. I have been to Pellman's twice and was impressed with the customer service both times. On my first visit, I was trying to get something fixed before heading out on a road trip. They couldn't schedule me for an appointment before I left, but said they could try to fit me in between appointments, but might not be able to. Since that didn't work for my time frame, they recommended me to another mechanic and called to make sure I could get in there. Awesome. The second time, my windshield wiper quit turning and, when I called to schedule an appointment, they said that I could just drive it by and they'd check it out for me righ then because it was probably an easy fix. It took just a minute or two, and they sent me on my way for free. While I was waiting for my turn, however, I heard them talking to another customer who had a much more difficult problem on his hands. They believed they had found his problem, but couldn't reproduce it to be sure, despite having driven the car one hundred miles trying to figure it out, and the fix was a pretty expensive part. Before making the pricey repair, they wanted to be sure they knew what was up, so they told the customer what to do if it happened again in order to get the car running so he didn't have to call for a tow. After all their time and effort that went into finding the problem, they didn't charge the guy anything. Awesome again. I totally recommend these guys if you're looking for a place that won't rip you off. read more

I was visiting from Pennsylvania when my headlights went out due to a bum combination switch. I've a 22 year old Isuzu Trooper, and the first good sign was seeing another Trooper awaiting repair in the parking lot. Since Isuzu hasn't made Troopers in a long while, this was a good sign that they had experience dealing with this older vehicle. And, sure enough, they were able to identify the problem and get me on the road with prompt, friendly service. The owner even went the extra mile to help identify a problem with a burnt out 12v system. (What they used to call a cigarette lighter in the ancient days.) We weren't able to resolve that problem, which was OK since that was not on the original work order. But the information I got should prove helpful for me to take a crack fixing it myself when I return home. Though I didn't take advantage of it, I did see that they were doing a very Boulder thing of having loaner bikes available for customers. As an East Coaster I thought this was brilliant. read more

I've been a longtime customer of Pellman's Automotive and recommend them to my friends as a place you can trust to fix your car. (Now a lot of my friends go there too) I moved to Denver some time ago but still drive to Boulder to have them work on my car. What can I say, when you find a good mechanic, you stick with them. I really appreciate how they give me advice on what needs to be fixed now and what I can wait to do later. One time I did go to one of the big chain stores for an oil change because I was having trouble getting into Boulder and they tried to sell me a whole bunch of work I didn't need. I'll never do that again. They also do a great job explaining what is needed in a way that I can understand. I have also called them to ask some questions over the phone regarding my car and they are very helpful providing possible solutions for my problems. Here are some other things I like about Pellman's - they have free wifi and a really comfortable waiting room with a table I can work on. I often go to lunch with friends when I drop my car off for work and they do a great job calling or texting me to let me know what work is needed and when it is done. They also have a buy 4 get the 5th free oil change program. My last visit there was free because it was my 5th oil change which is always a great treat. I had some concerns due to my car making strange noises. The glowing reviews this place has in addition to the comments on how honest they are, made me go to Pellman's. I was charged over $400.00 which seems excessive for a "Courtesy Visual Inspection". The $400.00 + was the pricetag for the inspection only, nothing was fixed. In the digital inspection, they noted that I needed an Engine oil change but my oil had just been changed a few days prior to bringing the car into Pellman's. The computer of the car wasn't updated to detect the oil change, however, Pellman's did not inspect the engine oil manually to make sure the computer was correct (not inspected correctly for the paid inspection). So pretty much they told me the same thing I could see in the dashboard. I did not bring my car in to get fixed after the inspection for fear of the astronomical cost. If a regular inspection costs over $400.00 imagine actually fixing the car. They might be good mechanics but I'm doubting the honest part. This is a business for people with extra cash, point blank period. If you are a normal working family or person, this place will hurt your pocket just like mine was. I wish that there were really honest, desent, and good mechanics out there but sadly greed is too powerful. read more

It made me feel really comfortable asking questions and gathering information (I need my cat replaced--an expensive repair that I wanted to find out as much as possible about). After initially being mad and disappointed in Pellmans, I'm happy to say that they made this situation right with us! We drove our Corvette back up to their shop to have the middle console put back in, and to get the door clips replaced that had been damaged... We sat a spoke with Dan for a very long time. He was apologetic and said that they just wanted to make this right for us. I was really happy that they fixed our car like they promised! Dan said that they would replace the door clips, and get the console lock installed and coded at no charge to us! And that's exactly what happened! I appreciate a place that keeps its word! And now I'm honoring my word! Thank you for honoring your word and making us happy customers! I wouldn't hesitate to bring my vehicle here for services! I am new to Boulder and arrived with an old car with a long list of problems. It died and needed a tow. I chose to have it towed to Pellman's blindly, mostly based on proximity to my house. The service experience has been excellent. Most importantly, I've never received so much communication about my car. They texted me a link to a thorough inspection report complete with an overall car health score, a list of inspection checkpoints and their corresponding individual health score, along with photos and a detailed explanation of things that need to be fixed. Not long after I got the inspection report, I received another text to a detailed cost estimate. Each time I spoke with someone on the phone, they were friendly, straightforward and clear. We've been taking both our cars to Pellman's for service since moving to Boulder 5 years ago. Recently we had AC parts replaced on an older Honda CRV, turned out the replacement part was defective. But Pellman's quickly replaced the part and got us back on the road, much cooler! We also recently purchased a new Rav4 and took it to Pellman's to have a trailer hitch installed. It turned out it took much longer than they estimated it would, but they completed the job as quickly as possible and stood by their original price quote. We now have 3 autos in our family and all will be serviced there, as they've always be very reliable, prices are fair and they stick with problems until they're fixed! read more

I think Pellman offers a white glove service. After reading glowing reviews on Yelp, I took my car there, and they performed an extensive examination of the condition of the car. They were friendly, professional and offered top of the line service--including a complementary ride home, beverages, and a comprehensive email report of my car that included excellent photos of the problems they discovered. I trust that they were honest and were capable of providing fantastic service. So why only an "A-OK" three star rating? Although Pellman is top-rate service; unfortunately, I am extremely budget-conscious. Their complete engine check cost $150. I would say--on average--you could expect to pay $100 at other auto service businesses. The Subaru dealership in Thornton offers this service for $50. Moreover, they quoted about $480 to exchange spark plugs. I don't think this quote is unreasonable; however, I called Flatirons Subaru to check what they might charge, and they said this would be "slightly less than $400--all in." That's about 17% less. I ended up spending $52 at Advanced Auto Parts, and put in about five hours of research/car work to do this myself. On the other hand, their quote to change out Axle boots was probably on par for what other places might charge. BOTTOM LINE: If you're OK with spending a little extra on excellent service, I highly recommend Pellman. If you're like me and you're very budget conscious, you might save some sheckel by shopping around. read more
