Let me start by prefacing my review: What I don't like about big chains like Guitar Center is that whenever I'm in there... I feel like I'm just being sold, you know? Like I'm talking to someone who's making commission on sales and just wants me to buy buy buy without asking questions or thinking. Now: H&B doesn't feel like this at all. It feels like the entire place is just full of music geeks who want nothing more than to idly chat about music gear and the art of it. Selling stuff seems to take a backseat to the craft of music making. That's something difficult to pull off. There's a good reason that H&B has been in business so long; the service is second to none. I've been to both H&B and Guitar Center recently, and I can say that the selection at H&B is just as good as GC, if not better! What's better, they have a whole other business dedicated to equipment repair. I've heard nothing but good things about their repair service (and if the used equipment in H&B passes through the repair shop's hands before it is sold, it speaks to their skills because all the used equipment is SOLID) So when I have my PA head repaired, I'll be coming here. Take that, Guitar Center! The one thing I was looking for was footpedals. I was impressed with their selection - there's a lot of wacky stuff here that GC doesn't have, and some stuff I've never even heard of - you know those kooky Soviet tube things. But anyway: My best friend's aunt teaches classical guitar, and did so out of H&B for many years. All the back stories I've heard about H&B and the staff doing lessons of all sorts... leads me to believe that it'd be hard to find professionals of quality like this anywhere else in the state. I recently had a guitar serviced here, and I also bought a new guitar and I have to say that the service was excellent! As a hobbyist, I can't justify spending $1,000.00+ on a guitar, and I wasn't looked down upon for buying a $400 guitar. A lot of their inventory is high end, and expensive, but I was given the same amount of attention that the guy that's going to drop $3k on a new Gibson, or vintage Fender would have received. I also just walked in for some electrical work on another guitar and it was done in about 20-30 minutes, at a reasonable cost. I've bought pedals, and strings here, and basically window shopped, but after making my first big purchase, I am ashamed that I didn't do it sooner. Customer for life. read more

I like that when I walk in, I don't get bombarded with salespeople just trying to sell me something to get commission, but have found the employees to be very helpful and knowledgable about the instruments. I am a guitar player and came in to look at Martin acoustic guitars, the guy who helped me gave me so many options of guitars that would best fit my playing style. He openly handed me any guitar, the very very expensive ones and the the more modest priced ones trying to find the one that I liked and the one that most complimented my playing style. I recently picked up a guitar from Huber and Breese and had a fantastic experience. I went in at 3pm on Saturday. At first, walking in, you see an assortment of mostly mid to high end instruments along the walls, from floor to ceiling. Many of them are unique and interesting enough to stand out and require more than a passing look. This is no Guitar Center inventory in which if you've been in once, you have a 90% chance of seeing the same model/colors like clockwork. There are some really nice instruments here. I went in looking for a particular Telecaster and while walking around, the staff were all helping other guests. There was enough going on up at the counter that I opted to just poke around a bit and take it all in. On some items, their selection was broader than GC, some a bit less so, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. They'd need to add a third floor to put much more inventory on the floor. After a couple of laps, I wandered up to the counter and was helped by an older salesman who asked what I wanted and began to look it up in the inventory. At that moment, a younger employee walked up and said that he knew they had what I was looking for, but they had just come in and hadn't been placed in the inventory. He went and grabbed the instrument, cracked open the box then cruised me upstairs to find an amp that suited my taste. He answered all of my questions in an enthusiastic and friendly way and then left me to play the instrument a bit. Turns out that they were running a Father's Day promotion, so I got a smoking deal on exactly what I wanted, and they were nice enough to change the strings and do a basic setup right then. The service from these Cole and the guys over at Huber & Breeze was top notch in every way. read more

During the past 20 years I have spent several thousands of dollars buying tons of guitars and ukuleles from this store including, among them, some expensive Martins, Taylors and Rainsongs. Even a Casio console piano. And djembes, and any kind of stuff. But when I decided to return a 150 dollars guitar that I had purchased just the day before, which I believed had intonation issues, I was mocked and treated by Paul Breese like if I was a lunatic. I hadn't been here in about five years but decided to go on a whim to see what they had in stock just for kicks. I had somehow forgotten about their in-store stage (which is a very good thing) and the fine smell of musical instruments permeates the air upon entrance. In stark contrast to the area's Guitar Centers the staff members here are obviously experienced musicians (whereas GC employs youngish hipster types who all-too-frequently don't know jack about their own inventory or even the basic fundamentals of instrument and amplifier build and design). The usual caveat to music stores with higher-end stock applies here as well--most of the good stuff is behind the counter or hanging high enough that you need Yao Ming's help to try it/them out. Strong selection of Fender and Gibson products here and---even better yet---they seem open to haggling (if'n yer good at it like I am). One of the owners gave me a better in-store deal than anything I could find online for a Fender product with a smile. THAT'S the type of service and professionalism I can heartily recommend. read more

This place has it going on. They specialize in guitar and drums, but have a good amount of piano music, and some other general music items as well. Instruments (used and new - and you can test anything out in the store), instrument accessories, books and sheet music, tuners, music themed gifts....they have it all! I took some guitar lessons here years ago, and had a great teacher. Since I don't live as close, I don't make it here as often anymore. But recently I returned to purchase a drum set, and it was a flawless experience. Got hooked up with a great set, some sticks, and some books for a price that was more than fair. You can call the folks at Huber & Breese anytime and the knowledgeable musicians on staff are more than happy to talk to you about a book recommendation, troubleshoot a technical problem on your instrument, or make a time for you to come into the store where they can help you in person.since it is a local shop and not a chain (like Guitar Center), they know the specifics of various venues, are friends with all other local musicians, and are generally just up to speed with everything about the Detroit music scene. What else is great about this store is that all the people working there are musicians themselves, and This place is a playground for guitarists and drummers...and even if you're not either of those two, it's still fun to poke around and channel your inner rock star for a bit. read more

Huber and Breese is the best guitar shop in Metro Detroit. They are a showcase dealer for Fender and Gibson. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. If you can't find what you're looking for, then just ask. A couple of times they didn't even carry the guitar line I was looking for, but still found a dealer in the area and got the guitar for me. Whether you're just beginning or looking for a Fender Custom Shop guitar hot from the NAMM show, H&B is the place. As far as selection, GC might have one nice guitar in their dinky showcase room while H&B has more than a few nicer guitars for you to play...try their whole back wall! read more

I have been doing business with Randy Jordan at Huber and Breese Music for over 30 years. I can tell you that you won't find better anywhere. They have the best prices AND the best customer service. Being a drummer, Randy is the man in the drum department, period, end of story. The man knows every part number from every manufacturer by heart, no need for a catalog. Seriously, it is mind boggling. He is a wonderful person and honest as the day is long. I have purchased dozens of drum sets and probably 3 times as many snare drums and cymbals throughout the years... Every buying experience has been perfect. Whenever a company screwed up an order, they stood behind me and made it right. EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! I have known the owner Paul Huber even longer and he has always been great and done right by me. The man knows guitars and carries handmade gems that you won't find anywhere. He and Terry Breese (deceased) started the store over 40 years ago and became THE music store in the area through great pricing, great service, great private instruction, and bring pillars of the community. We all miss Terry dearly and he was a wonderful man. The rest of the staff at H&B Music are top notch and second to none. It simply doesn't get better than this. They carry high end, mid range, and beginner lines... Something for anyone at any level. It is very rare to find a store with this kind of inventory today anywhere in the world. They are a family run business who has survived through all of the years by being the best. Even when I lived out of state for a number of years, I still dealt with them exclusively. That says a lot. The salesman/worker.. was a total douchbag and pretty much treated me like as if I were a tenage(Iam 33) who wanted to kick tires around at a used car lot.. The bag even talked down to me after I asked the price on the cab, which the tag was missing.. I will never stop in that place again. To the Owners of H@B you guys lost alot of buisness. Of course - go there if you find an instrument you like - but don't assume you'll get great follow-up. That being said I have personally found that one of the best guitar teachers (and players) named Paul (not meaning Mr. Huber the owner) seems to be the one employee who consistently behaves as if he cares about the customer - is very engaging and relatable, etc . That is why I don't really think of H&B as a mom and pop store (vs Guitar Center) at all but more as a love of money focused kind of place. I'm sure it's not that way with everyone there - but the owner has shown himself to be quite wanting in many respects. My daughters had appts. for lessons. One for guitar, one for ukulele. The ukulele instructor was there and there was no issue. The guitar instructor was not. He was there apparently just before we arrived, but was not there for the lesson. Al Fontyn. My 11yr. old daughter was really disappointed. Several issues came to light. Huber Breese had no idea what was going on. They did not know who had lessons or when or with who. Then, one of the guys working there said "it's not us, it's the instructor". I disagree. It is you. Huber Breeze gives lessons, they should be on top of this. If you go to Huber Breese music for lessons, make sure you keep track of every detail. Never had a problem with the staff. All musicians and knowledgeable and helpful. I have purchased new equipment and found their prices fair and somewhat competitive. I was really disappointed when I recently purchased an sound cabinet and head only to find out they were way over priced than G.C. I chose to use Huber Breeze because I have always been treated fairly in the past and I want to support a real musicians store. They were at least over a hundred dollars more expensive than their competitor on each item and that was after some haggling. Therefore you may want to check pricing before you hand over your hard earned cash. The only reason I am giving them the rating of A-Ok is because this is the 1st time out of 4 or 5 transaction where I feel I wasn't treated fairly.
