Have you ever walked into an establishment (or in my case on to a field) and immediately had that feeling of, this is going to be one of the best decisions I am about to make in my life? Well, that's how I felt during my first class at HRA. My favorite thing about this gym is the community and diversity of its members. After moving back to the area on March 1, 2020 and having the whole world shut down soon after, I was at a loss for community. However, a few months later I was fortunate enough to get connected into HRA because they were on top of their game with Hoboken to get things going in a safe way. They have 3 main types of classes offered: WOD's (CrossFit workouts), RPM (strength and conditioning), and yoga. All of the coaches all have their own flavor and approach and teach with heart, passion, but most of all expertise. This is the first gym I have been to that I do not feel that I have to avoid "that" coach. If you are searching for a gym that is doing things the RIGHT way, and I am not just talking about working out safely during a pandemic, I am also talking about focus on form, positivity, and taking care of one another, this is your gym. From events such as Hero WOD's at a Jersey Farm to raise money for 31 Hero's, to decorating the gym for the holidays, this truly is a special place. Life changing. This is a special place to me that goes beyond just a gym and completely turned my life around. Very happy to have found this gym when I moved to Hoboken. Wow! So October marks two years that I've been doing Crossfit and what I have to say is that the coaches at Hudson River CrossFit are fantastic! Every class feels like I'm getting a private lesson. They are super knowledgeable, attentive and give their hearts and souls to the "family." What a community too! These guys are friends for life! Ready to kill it and be the most encouraging group of people on the planet. So glad I was able to build friendships and amazing memories these past two years. I've grown and learned so much! I am not the same athlete I was when I walked in. Twerking squats? Not any more! If you are looking for a place to decompress after a stressful day at work, look no further! I have been a member here since opening day and can say, without a doubt, that this is the best CrossFit box in Hoboken. The Box: The location (midtown Hoboken) is great and the building itself is awesome for CrossFit (open floor plan, at street level, with a big garage door leading outside - absolutely perfect for WODs). The only downside is that the complaining neighbors restrict the ability to drop weights and play music at a preferred level... but we've all learned to satisfactorily work around this obstacle. It's also super clean and has all the essential weights and pieces of equipment one would need. Bathroom: Complete with showers + towels and a scale, the bathrooms are clean and inviting. Bonus: they are heated during the chilly winter months! The Staff: The coaches are all really friendly, wonderful to work with, and very accommodating to the different ability levels of the members. They will push you out of your comfort zone but never put you in harm's way as they are constantly drilling proper form over increased weight (something that is sometimes an afterthought in CrossFit). In addition, they are open to ideas/recommendations and are always willing to try something new - a sign of a staff, and owner, who cares about their members. Having sampled other boxes in the area, HRCF is the clear stand out. From the location, to the space, to the staff, I really enjoy working out here and am looking forward to a fantastic future. read more

HRCF is absolutely wonderful. I came in to stay fit and complement my training for the Boston marathon last year. The coaches are awesome and workouts always pushed me. After coming back post Boston PR, the gym was offering a nutrition challenge, even though I did not partake, it was great to try different recipes and think about nutrition in a new way. Being generally physically fit, the coaches knew that I could push myself just a little bit harder. This encouragement and guidance was super helpful and paid off. HRCF has a great community where everyone works together to workout and have fun - would suggest anyone on the fence to join! Hudson River CrossFit (HRCF) is Hoboken's secret treasure in the fitness club category. I haven't been to a gym in 2 years and needed to exercise badly to boost my tennis results. Local gyms in Hoboken seemed unattractive, overcrowded or too far from home. Few months ago I noticed a sign on the corner of Clinton & 7th advertising an upcoming fitness club opening. Since it was only a few blocks away from home I decided to give it a try. After emailing HRCF I received a prompt response, signed up for a trial (they have a very simple, "no surprises" cancellation policy) and began to receive thoughtful emails preparing me for the first class. When you join the club, HRCF will assign you to the fundamentals classes first. They are important from two points of view: learning how perform basic moves avoiding injury; and understanding the CrossFit concept. After completing the fundamentals I was excited to begin the classes. HRCF allows to take as many classes per month as you please - there's no cap. Each class is 1 hour and up to 14 people. Small group size means you get much needed attention from the coach. We warm up, stretch, do various exercises and finish the class with more stretching. The best part is that on the way back home I feel energized and happy. This is a very different experience compared to my previous gym memberships where I killed myself with boring repetitive routines and used to come home drained and tired. Results began to show after only two months of training. I feel stronger, fitter, my tennis is better and I know that I found a great way to keep myself in shape. HRCF coaches are true professionals. They program great classes that combine strength, gaming, agility and cardio exercises. They teach you how to keep track of performance and work towards your goals. More importantly they really care about CrossFit and you. Hudson River CrossFit is very friendly. In fact one of the club's goals is to ensure that all members feel like one team, know each other and form friendships. It's a wonderful idea. People of all ages and fitness levels are welcome. I LOVE HRCF and I would recommend it to anyone in the Hoboken area. The gym is great for both CrossFit newbies and veterans. I've been a member to other CrossFit gyms and this is by far my favorite! The group of coaches really know what they are doing. They foster a culture of support and the morning and afternoon workout groups are a welcoming and supportive bunch. This is no cookie cutter workout---HRCF knows how to customize a workout to meet the clients needs so that you feel like you've put forth your very best effort, but at the same time you aren't walking away injured or discouraged. I started working out with the owner, John, at his weekly free workouts in the park (while his gym was under construction). After the first few times, I really didn't want to return, but I just kept showing up and punishing myself. When I learned that his gym was opening, I decided I had to join and see what Crossfit is all about and I am so glad I did. It seems this box is smaller than others, but what that means is smaller class sizes and more personal attention from the coaches. All of them are outstanding and make sure that you are performing he WODs correctly and at your max potential. I can say that in the month and a half that I've been at HRCF that my body has changed and I have been able to perform better. The camaraderie and family atmosphere is remarkable. I am so happy I joined. I hadn't worked out in ages before I joined HRCF. Had never done CrossFit seriously. The staff is so wonderful, brilliant and supportive. I got an overall good vibe when I walked into the gym for the first time. The classes are very small, allowing personal attention, which is so rare for a gym in Hoboken. The coaches know everyones name, and after a few classes, I knew everyone too. As the sister gym to Bowery CrossFit, my glowing recommendation of Bowery extends to Hudson River as well! The coaches are the best and brightest in the business. As someone who was initially intimated to try Crossfit, my expectations have been far exceeded . I was worried about becoming bulky, or not being fit enough to keep up in the classes. I used to be extremely fit, dancing classical ballet 30+ hours per week, but after a serious injury, I "let myself go" and was worried that the classes would be too intense. Boy was I proven wrong. With individualized attention, there is no worry of getting injured or pushing too hard, yet you still get a great work out every time. The gym and exercising have always been a constant in my life. I moved to Hoboken almost 4 years ago and I found myself consistently going to the gym and consistently bored with my same old routine. I wasn't pushing myself nearly as much as I did in my early 20's, so I joined the only Crossfit in Hoboken at the time. The workouts were challenging but something was still missing. The classes were always huge and I never truly felt like I fit in. After a year I noticed Hudson River Crossfit was opening. At first I was interested because it was much closer to where I lived. I joined shortly after they opened. The owner, John and I had many conversations before I made the switch and he always answered all my questions and concerns promptly. The classes were much smaller than I was used to and I felt like the coaches showed me and everyone there so much attention I felt like I knew them in a past life. If you don't excel in a particular area or you are having a sluggish day they have no problem scaling the exercises to fit your personal needs, injuries, weaknesses, etc. I have done a few drop in classes at other Crossfits as well and Hudson River definitely had a different vibe. Some may describe crossfit in general as being cultish but I never felt that from these guys. If I missed a few classes or even a week at HRCF I didn't feel like "that guy" coming back. If I didn't attend a particular event outside the gym, no one cared. They welcomed me back each time as if I never skipped a beat. The coaches are all down to earth and if you want a friend they'll be that too. HRCF is crazily awesome!! Had been with HRCF for a year plus and it is a great box! Being a member at HRCF will always keep you coming back for more, and before you know it, going to the gym will be a seamless part of your daily routine. When I first began my membership, my goal was to make it to three classes per week. Now, eight months later, I find it hard to miss a day. The workouts are never boring and you learn something new during every class. The gym itself is no frills and makes for a great atmosphere to work hard. The coaches really know their stuff, and help keep the athletes safe from injury while still pushing you to reach your goals. One of my favorite things about HRCF is the community of people. As a former college athlete, I swore to myself I would never wake up early to work out again. But I am now a regular 6:15 am class member and I attribute that directly to the crew that is there with me every day. read more

I took a beginner class here last weekend. It was AWESOME. They instructor was super knowledgeable and passionate. The workout was incredible. I did 10 pull-ups in a row for the first time since before I hit puberty. They pumped classic hip-hop during the time trial portion, which is always a bonus. Outstanding! I could not be happier with the crossfit family that is Hudson River! This gym has taken my crossfit abilities to the next level. I have been a member of other crossfit gyms, but Hudson River is the real deal. The coaches are very knowledgable providing excellent instruction and inspiration. The attention to details in each workout and particularly complex movements, Olympic lifts, make it an environment where good form leads to safe gains. The coaches push you to achieve in the gym, but they all make each make the workouts, even the most taxing ones, fun. Coach Ashley will have you laughing with his creative warm ups, crossfit quidditch is quite entertaining, and his music choices are wonderfully unique. He's a PT to boot, his knowledge of mobility and the body in general is doctoral. Coach Ash loves to give out laps, a joke, and no sign in burpies! His presence makes you want to push yourself harder. Coach Allison is a former college Olympic weightlifter you cannot top that experience. She also speaks a half dozen languages. Coach John will work you in a class, but you want to perform for him. He provides excellent crossfit/Paleo lifestyle advice in emails and blogs. Oh on the Paleo note, this gym doesn't end with your workout, but provides you with the tools to live a healthier and fitter life. The nutrition knowledge from our first challenge left me 6lbs lighter, 3 inches smaller in the waist, and with a loss of 6% body fat! The team approach to the Paleo lifestyle keeps in fun, motivational, and manageable. You will see results at HRCF! The other members, so welcoming! I have developed some awesome friendships at HRCF. How do I even start... This is the greatest gym I've ever been a part of!!! I've never been in a place where the coaches and peers GENUINELY CARE about your success and want to help you achieve in every way possible. The atmosphere is full of INFECTIOUS ENTHUSIASM, and although I've only been working out for about 3 weeks, I'm totally hooked! The coaches are brilliant and have a PLAN and PROGRAM to help you become as fit as you've ever been in your life. Listen... I thought I gave 100% before during a workout.. but you have no idea what you're CAPABLE OF until a coach is in your face asking you to give EVERYTHING you've got for the last 5..4..3..2..1 minutes/second/reps and you beat your 2k time on an erg by 45 seconds or PR a shoulder press by 15# in your first few sessions. Started Crossfit about 6 months ago at HRCF and it has truly been a great experience. I was not in great shape and still am not where I want to be, but Hudson River is pushing me to it. I've been with HRCF now for about 3.5 months and I couldn't be happier with the coaching and people that make up this community. The WODs are always challenging enough to get your sweat on and modifiable to those with injuries or just beginning. I came from another gym that had separate class times to focus more on Olympic lifting and strength, offered it as a suggestion, and now they're incorporating it into their weekend programming. As a new(er) gym, they're definitely doing things right and striving to improve. I am not new to working out, but am new to crossfit, and was a little intimidated by all the hype when looking into crossfit. I looked at all of the Hoboken crossfits and HRCF is by far the one that delivers on what it preaches; pushing yourself, supporting eachothers, keeping good form, and holistically being healthy through exercise and eating correctly. Personable coaches, responsive staff, flexible times, what more could you want? I've been a member since February 2014 and it was first recommended to me from a friend. I've been to a couple free introduction classes from around the area but decided to start my membership here, and have been going ever since. The coaches are great and often help out with my own personal fitness goals. I feel like every class I'm learning a new cue to perfect form and improve performance. The staff is very responsive, with regards to any questions or requests with my membership, everything has been resolved the day of. They offer a variety of different times for classes and I'm able to add a workout to my morning routine before work. I would highly recommend it! read more

It's been about a year since my last review (which was written shortly after I started in Nov. 2014), so I feel it's fair to write an update as to how everything has been. I will say upfront, I've seen TREMENDOUS results: -First off, I've lost 50 pounds since joining and just about cut my body fat percentage in half! I partook in one of the nutrition challenges and a number of the habits I picked up stuck with me. The gym now also offers members access to Kettlebell Kitchen services, which many fully utilize. -I now have enough energy to make it in 4-6 times per week, as opposed to barely 3 in January. My primary sport is softball, and I ended up having the stamina to play on 6 different teams throughout the spring, summer, and fall sometimes playing as many as 4 games per day and 7 per week, including with HRCF's own championship team. To top it off, I had the best stats of my career in 2015. -I've noticed my sleeping habits have drastically improved, as has my overall mood. Between the workouts, new found energy, and nutrition improvement (all directly attributed to HRCF) I was able to overcome a bout of depression I was dealing with. -The amount of weight I'm lifting compared to when I started is astronomically higher...not to mention I do it with better form and more flexibility. -A couple new coaches have come on, but are just as knowledgeable and approachable as those who were there when I started. I really can't say enough about how good these guys are- absolutely phenomenal...and they really do care about everyone who walks in. On a number of occasions I've gotten e-mails from coaches asking about my progress. -I joined just after moving to Hoboken, and I have made some great friends here. You get to know the people you work out with well, and through the gym's social events, you even get to know the people you just see in passing before or after a WOD. Everyone wants everyone else to succeed. In summary- joining has been one of the best decisions of my life. The price might seem a bit high, but once you factor in what you're getting I believe it is totally worth it. I fully stand by the 5-star review I gave a couple months in. Having crossfitted for over 3 years at boxes throughout North Jersey and NYC, Hudson River Crossfit has some of the best coaches and best programming that I have ever seen. Just joined this gym and I am very impressed by the holistic approach to fitness. The first session taught me everything I need to know about the class with a big focus on form to build strength without injury. He also discussed nutrition in a reasonable way. And he focused in building a sense of community that will get you to the gym and encourage you to give it your all and get more fit. And it feels nice. I really like it. What's not to like? Centrally located (about as central-Hoboken as central-Hoboken gets), tons of classes, great coaches, flexible membership at a reasonable price.... can't complain at all. The coaches and community amongst the members is wonderful - everyone supports one another, introduces themselves to new members, and the coaches are always giving suggestions and offering help to encourage improvement. The staff is knowledgable and enthusiastic, and the workouts are killer. I would definitely recommend HRCF to anyone considering a box in Hoboken. HRCF is super great. I have been crossfitting for a little over 3 years and joined HRCF a few months ago when I moved to the area. Unlike other boxes, HRCF provides the opportunity for other classes and training such as yoga, OLY classes, and personal training. The personal training sessions are well worth it and have drastically improved my form and performance. Additionally, the programming is challenging and the facility and equipment are excellent. On top of that, the members are fun and the coaches keep you going. From new to very experienced, I highly recommend this box to anyone looking to get in shape and have a good time in the process. read more
