Gorgeous place, horrendous service. Food was average. This is one of the most beautiful bars in the area. The bar staff are pretty unfriendly and weirdly enough, there is no standing room inside to grab a drink while you wait for a table. Also the music is strange. The hostess was very soft spoken, and didn't seem to be enthused to be there. She reluctantly let 2 of us sit and the other 2 stand. Maybe there was some issue that day that we don't know about? The bar area inside is relatively small, which I think adds an extra layer of coziness. The bartenders didn't acknowledge us at all, and when we finally we able to grab their attention, the female bartender didn't say so much of a hi, but said well did you talk to the hostess. We said yes, she reluctantly made our drinks. The cocktails are gorgeous. But we wanted some shots of dark rum. I kid you not, it was like they were refusing to give us these. It took 20 minutes -we counted- to get this. The food- I grew up in Hawaii, and this by no means is Hawaiian food. With that said, I loved the loaded fries. Everything else, hush puppies, coconut shrimp was just ok. The lobster rangoons were just terrible, they were overwhelmingly lemon-y. My sister had the burger and she said it was really good. A tiki bar should have a welcoming vibe, and this just isn't it. I might give the patio another shot if it's open, but for now this is a pass. read more

My first experience with Huli was during the pandemic- delivered food when I was craving chicken and rice. I've gone back in person a few times, and I repeatedly find myself consuming their chicken and rice. It's simple and delicious. Served with a simple salad and macaroni salad - it's not over the top (but no tuna, I crave that in tiki bars' macaroni salad!) The mixed drinks are varied. Some have the flavors that kick you in the teeth. The other knock you off your chair. They have variety here, but I think the use of orgeat is to the point of over-use. Plain and simple, I've enjoyed coming here. Summer - the back bar is awesome (when the weather is nice). The issue's I've had - the service and food can vary wildly. Sometimes, they're checking in on you, refilling your drinks, grabbing another mixed drink, your food comes out hot and fresh. Another time, you feel like you have to physically jump in front of your server, or be loud to get someone's attention (not rudely loud, just "excuse me? Excuse me?" as they fly by - and it's a narrow space, so you're not yelling across the bar. They just have some rough edges still as they evolve. They clearly have the passion and the theme down, it's just those little "extra" things that every restaurant goes through in their journey of highs and lows. I no longer love this place. Boyf and I went to have a lobster roll on a Saturday afternoon. We got a parking spot right out front. There was no one at the hostess stand, and I tried to make eye contact with the ladies behind the bar but to no avail. I suggested we go to the patio bar, and we did. We sat and were ignored. Then a guy saw us and I smiled. This is how he greeted us: Did you check in with the hostess? This should have been our cue to leave. We said there was no hostess. He said nothing. We finally got menus and he took our order. No friendliness at all. We split an order of lobster rolls and fries. I had a Painkiller. Boyf said The Walrus' same entree is much better. Plus they have sweet potato fries. There was another bartender who was friendly so that helped a bit. We paid our check and went elsewhere for drinks. As one of the long standing restaurants in Powell, this place definitely caters mainly to locals. However, I have heard it draws a cocktail enthusiasts crowd from all over Columbus. I find their drinks whimsical and fun, but always a tad sweet for my taste. They do wash down nicely with some of their tapas-like foods. The fact that even their entrees are served in disposable containers makes you feel like you're never really having your main meal here lol. It feels more like a happy hour, before dinner drinks place. I can also see families having a quick dinner before or after a sporting or school event. Mostly, I think this is an adult restaurant. The food is decent, although nothing extremely extraordinary. The Bang bang broccoli is quite yummy though, & having Spam on the menu definitely gives them some Polynesian street creds. I do also like the idea that something like this exists in a mainly homogenized, American fare, suburban town center. It is convenient if you are antiquing or visiting in Powell. Started of with the Fries which are tossed in a tiki dry rub topped with pork, bang bang sauce and pineapple salsa. These were so good I kept going in for one more bite, then they were gone. Last was the Kale pork sandwich, slow cooked pulled pork on a toasted brioche bun. With lettuce, tomato and of course bang bang sauce. We really wanted to love this place but unfortunately we had some disappointing factors. In short, the service was extremely disappointing and rude. They were not apologetic about the mistakes. It was very over priced for average food. The waitress missed a main dish ordered. We requested the item to be removed due to being brought out late/forgotten. The manager removed the item and another item but added a gratuity charge, that was not on the original receipt. The manager stated this is because of our party of 6. But it ended up costing more than the original reciept. We tried a lot of items; coconut shrimp, pineapple bbq wings, tiki fries, aloha bowl, and a lobster roll. My favorites were the tiki fries and aloha bowl. The drinks were ok, as well. They were out of some of the options and also out of a beer on draft and did not communicate that until after ordered. My wife and I started going to Huli Huli about a year ago, where we'd find consistently good drinks, good food, and recognizable and friendly staff. We'd visit the place about once a month, and even got acquainted with Rick, one of the owners, to the point that we'd show up on slow days and he'd always stop by our table and chat. Around the time the new year started, we noticed there'd been some changes in staff, but the food and drinks were still good, so we kept coming. Springtime started and the food quality took a hit too- but the drinks were still good. My wife and I would still take friends there to introduce them to the place. Now that the Summer's here, however, we noticed that it wasn't as busy as it once was same time last year, and we wondered why, then we ordered our drinks. I'd compare what happened to this place's drinks to what happened with Fruitopia- anyone remember that beverage? When it initially released it was really good, but then coke bought them out and something about the ingredients changed. Wasn't the same after that. Huli Huli is like Fruitopia- I go there expecting the same nostalgic feeling I had during my initial visits, only to be greeted by new, young, and while well intentioned seemingly inexperienced staff, food that's taken a substantial dip in quality (the pork belly has really gone downhill), and now the mortal sin of drinks that are SO iced down that you're basically getting a quarter of the quantity you would have at the same time last year. If my wife and I would have visited this place this year for the first time instead of last year, we probably wouldn't have come back. I've come to understand that there's a new spot in downtown Columbus that's opened up, and while it's great to see the business expand, it really, really sucks that a place that was once my wife and I's favorite little getaway in Powell has taken a substantial hit across the board when it comes to quality. The ice to the top of the glass in every drink we ordered was enough to make us just go to one of the many places on the Powell strip that still cares about the quality of its product. The mighty Huli Huli is now a watered down chumpy bar that feels too corporate now to bring about those same vibes we got from it just a year ago. We both thought this place was awesome, but time, changes in staff, changes in food quality, and mostly changes of drink have dropped our opinion of it being awesome to being just meh. read more

Came to town to visit the zoo and stopped to get dinner. Got the Tiki fry's appetizer and they were amazing. Then for entries my daughter got the Burger and it was very flavorful and fresh. The other three of us got the Hawaiian plate. 1 Michiko Chicken with Pineapple BBQ, 1 Shrimp with Bang Bang sauce and 1 Kaula Pork with the Pineapple BBq sauce. Everything was great, very light but filling. Wife got the Baby Aspirin drink and it was like a pina colada I got the Port South. Highly recommend stopping and getting a bite. read more

The manager was truly appalling, On Tuesday, 6/23, I was with a group of 11 friends, We wanted to put our name on the wait list for a table or two outside. The manager told us that we'd probably be better off going down the street to Kitchen Social. Our plan was a tiki night experience, so that wasn't really acceptable. Then, when we finally were able to agree to get him to put our name on the wait list, he then told us he didn't want us - paying customers- to sit at the bar and take "all the seats" - for the record, we didn't take close to half the seats while we waited on a table. We also were not allowed to stand at the bar, which I somewhat understand, but when some of our party arrived and we got up to hug them and say hello, we were told to immediately "Sit down!"- My friend felt like she had to raise her hand for permission to get up and use the bathroom, It was ridiculous. There were more rude comments by the manager, but I'll leave it at this. This was completely unacceptable, 11 paying customers on a TUESDAY night, and you nearly refuse service. We ended up splitting an entree, but it was still a huge portion. I am not a fan of macaroni salad, but my fiancé enjoyed it! The chicken was tender and the Huli huli sauce was very good (not spicy). Service was okay, they were pretty busy with a larger table and the bar was packed. The Tiki fries with the dry rub, the sweet sauce, and pulled pork was delicious. The Huli Burger was a decent burger, but nothing was special about the bun, patty, toppings, or sauce. Unfortunately the weather was a bit too hot so we dined inside which was also very festive. We each ordered one of the cocktails. They were both good but the same price as an entree. As for the food my girlfriend got a burger and fries, the burger had grilled pineapple and teriyaki sauce on it. I ordered the moco loco. Both the burger and the burger patty on my moco loco were extremely overdone. I really wish they asked how we would like them cooked because they were both a miss.
