Located off the beaten path on River Road and set back from the oaks, is a true old school treasure to be discovered if you haven't been there already. With consistent hours, they're usually open whenever we pass by which is key if you're going to shop local. Our last visit focused on shopping for collard greens (which are grown right there), watermelon, yellow squash, plums and some spicy pickle spears which punch a kick of heat. Inside is well organized, clean, and prices are well labeled - so you plan your purchases accordingly. Throughout the year they have a changing variety of produce grown locally and some that is brought in to make it a decent spot to get more than just a thing or two. This is the only commercial tea plantation in the continental USA. Privately owned initially,…read moreBigelow Tea purchased it in 2003 to provide the plantation with the financial security to continue business indefinitely. Although Bigelow owns it, none of the tea grown here is used in other Bigelow teas and it remains an independent producer of Charleston Teas. I had no idea how tea was grown or turned into tea bags, but after a wonderful Trolley Tour of the plantation and the factory tour, I now feel very well versed in the process! This is a working farm, so the grounds are not manicured for visual aesthetics. Still, it is fun to see. Added recently is a special breed of sheep that they use to "weed" the tea fields. These sheep apparently love the taste of weeds and hate the taste of tea plants, so it's a nice synergy. The tour guide was delightful and extremely informative. They have a nice-sized gift shop, and the staff is very friendly. There are also samples of each type of tea, hot and cold, that are free and plentiful. Even though I'm more of a coffee drinker and rarely drink tea, I thoroughly enjoyed spending a few hours learning about the process and tasting the final product. If you're ever close by, I highly recommend you stop by!

It was about a hour Drive away from Charleston. I recommend arriving early so you can check out the store and sample Some tea . They also do an inside of the factory store. This trolly style tour was just of the fields and greenhouse. There is no AC on the trolly so be aware if you are going in the hot summer months. The tour lasted about 45 min or so. They have a detailed history of how the tea farm came to be and how they grow the tea. Very informative and interesting. If you like learning about history you will enjoy it.
