Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building, Louis J. Lefkowitz State Office Building, US Court of International Trade, Jacob K. Javits Federal Building and Surrogate's Court of New York County. The Supreme Court building is just like you may have seen on TV or in movies*, tall Corinthian columns with a short flight of stairs leading up to the front entrance. Architect Guy Lowell won the contest for design on the building in 1913, its exterior modeled after a Roman temple, and work started 1919, with initial intent to be a circular building. Due to WWI, the plans downsized to a smaller hexagonal structure with a rotunda, and completed in 1927. The court is open to the public 9am-5pm when there are cases proceeding and you are able to sit in, though I have not personally done this before. A security scan/metal detector is required when entering the building. It's divided into six sections depicting pairs of historical figures important to the history of Western law: Assyrian / Egyptian, Hebraic / Persian, Greek / Roman, Byzantine / Frankish, English / early colonial, with the final section portraying George Washington / Abraham Lincoln. If I get to the point where I am selected for a case I am dismissed by the attorney and one time the judge. My health just doesn't allow for inconsistency in my eating habits and I often can't focus or think straight because of my blood sugar. I found if I obtained a doctors statement with my diagnosis I could ask for permanent excusal. That's what I did. I still have anxiety that I will be called once more. The security at this courthouse is more stringent than an airport. You are sitting in close contact to other potential jurors. Everything is a process including names being called and individuals being questioned. If you are lucky you are dismissed after a day. Usually three days of the agony is the most. Once you get off that floor, you go through the security check (unless you're an attorney with a valid Secure Pass). Definitely not the most fancy or ostentatious court building you'll come across but it's small enough to not make you feel overwhelmed or as intimidated. I've also found security here to be helpful, informative, friendly, all that good stuff. Just make sure if you have a proceeding at 2 to get here no earlier than maybe 5-10 minutes before since they do not let you in early & you have no place to sit or hang out. After I learned more I decided to put in the effort. If you're interested check on line for a location near you. I went to the New York Public Library on 40th Street early one morning when the IDNYC Department opened. I came prepared with my documents. If you read and follow the instructions on their website it's a smooth process. After I completed the application, provided the documentation, and had my photo taken, I was out of there. My ID came in the mail in about two weeks. Over the next couple of years I had Free year long memberships to the Guggenheim, The MET, MOMA, and more. Additionally I had discounts at the museum shops and cafes. They have Sports discounts too and so much more. Every Year a new list of free or discount activities is provided. You can check their website. My ID was Free and does not expire for five years. I'm not sure if it's still free. They make renewal easy using an online renewal process. I advise my retired friends to get the ID. The savings is well worth it! My screen shots are from their website. Check it out. It's definitely not as much fun since COVID. I hope it will return to its usefulness soon.

I brought all of the documentation I…read morethought I needed according to their requirements: My valid NYS drivers license and a copy of my renters insurance invoice as proof of address since I've moved after I got my license renewed. I also brought along a copy of my lease just in case, thinking it couldn't hurt even though I only needed one piece of address proof. Boy was I wrong. The woman doing the pre-screening looked at my license, ignored my renters insurance invoice, and she honed in on the copy of my lease. She told me that they didn't accept copies and that I couldn't use the lease as proof of address. She asked me if I had a paystub, credit card statement or bank statement. I explained that I was enrolled in paperless statements, and that's why I brought the renters insurance invoice. She said she couldn't help me and that I needed to come back again with some better form of address proof. Okay, fine. I printed out copies of all of the things she mentioned because somehow statements that are printed out don't count as copies. I came back today, handed her the renters insurance invoice again, she ignored that and went to my paystub and said "You can use this". Then there was some complicated chair/line system were everyone needed to switch seats every two minutes. When I finally got to the person actually entering my information for the ID, I gave her my renters insurance invoice and asked her if I could use that as my proof of address, she looked at and said "Sure, this will work." Everything went smoothly from then on and I was done in about five minutes. TL/DR: The person doing the prescreening either doesn't understand what's acceptable proof or is too anxious about doing her job to do it correctly. Don't bring copies, it will set her off.
