Dr. Mizoguchi is the best Ophthalmologist, and this office has always been pleasant and professional for the past nearly 30 years I have gone here. Years ago, I saw Dr. Davis here. In another practice, Dr. Gibb is amazing as well, but he is retired now. My Cataract surgeries were a total success last year with the amazingly calm and most professional Dr. Mizoguchi preforming them at Mad River Hospital. With Medicare and Partnership Medical Taxi got me there and back home. Now I can see the TV, the computer print, normal sized print and most restaurant menus without glasses. I can see to drive as well, but DMV small print on the eye test says I need to wear glasses. I did get glasses at Six Rivers Optical (Medicare reimbursed about $120), for small print and to see small street signs in advance. There is a shortage of Ophthalmologists up here. If you are fortunate enough to get an appointment with Dr. Mizoguchi, I highly recommend him. Besides being very nice, he explains everything in layman's terms. Years ago, I was diagnosed with macular degeneration in the dry stage. Keeping it at bay with eye vitamins (Ocuvite plus extra C, plant-based E, melatonin, a variety of organic vegetables, Wild Caught Salmon, etc.) has kept it at bay for 10+ years. Dr. Mizoguchi was shocked to see a Macular Degeneration Drusenoid had shrunk as well. He showed me the blown-up picture showing that. I believe Acupuncture helped too, but we need more studies on this. As far as all these negative reviews, I have never heard of any of those Ophthalmologists at this Humboldt Medical Eye Associates practice. Perhaps I was not paying attention or maybe they have this practice mixed up with someplace else. Everyone has ALWAYS been kind, efficient, and knowledgeable with assistants and the office staff as well. Let's hope we get more Ophthalmologists up here, as Dr. Mizoguchi is taking care of 4 counties. This does not affect his ability to be an excellent surgeon, to be kind to everyone and to give each person the personal care they deserve. read more

Dr. Mizoguchi is an excellent, knowledgeable, skilled, compassionate ophthalmologist. He genuinely cares about his patients, and works insanely long hours. His office is constantly slammed, and since he takes as much time as necessary with each patient, wait times for appointments can get long, but I don't mind because I know that when I do see him, I will receive outstanding care. read more

I am not familiar with past ophthalmologist at this association, but I can vouch for the professional services that Doctor Michael B. Mizoguchi has performed on me. I am 81 years old and have had glaucoma for over 40 years and he is one of the 2 best Ophthalmologist I have ever had. The other one is retired. I can't express how happy I am to finally find an MD that is thorough, professional, and is giving me excellent results. I highly recommend him. read more

Dr. Mizoguchi is my hero!! He is the sole opthamologist right now at Humboldt Medical Eye Associates, as other partners have left or retired. He is personally seeing up to 54 patients a day, a number that is not sustainable for him or his health. But the fact that he tries shows how much he cares, as well as what the need is for eye care in our aging community. He even works on Saturdays at times to make up for a day he had to take off. It is no wonder that it is hard to schedule an appointment with his office. The demand is insane! Despite the incredible stress that Dr. Mizoguchi must be under, I have found him to always be warm and gracious, as well as knowledgeable. I hope he is able to find another partner soon, so he can reclaim his own life, and not burn out while trying to help so many people by himself. My mother, age 82, went to see Dr. Mohammad as a new patient on May 10th, 2022 because her McKinleyville ophthalmologist (whose name escapes me) is retiring. Dr. Mohammad was allegedly taking new patients.  When my mom arrived for her appointment, as a new patient, first visit to the office, she was ushered into a room with a man who began speaking to her but didn't introduce himself. After inquiring, he told my mom he was Dr. Mohammad. Most of the visit consisted of him venting about the other ophthalmologists leaving the area and how he had a small practice and couldn't take it all on. He did let my mom know her pressure was up (she has glaucoma), asked her if her previous doctor had talked with her about macular degeneration, and when my mother responded with, "Yes, why, do you see that I have the signs of it?" He snapped at her, "I didn't say that!" He then proceeded to tell her didn't want to deal with her because she has glaucoma. Then he told her to go to Northcoast Ophthalmology. To which she replied, they're not taking new patients and he responded that it was illegal for them to not take her on. Most of this was done with his back to her, which made hearing more challenging. He then left the room without a goodbye, good luck, or parting words of any kind. In short, he scared the hell out of her and left her hanging. Dr. Mohammad's rudeness added insult to injury. While I'd like to give Dr. Mohammad the benefit of the doubt and think, maybe he was having a bad day, I'm having a hard time doing so. We all know the providers in Humboldt County and their supporting staff are stretched thin, but my mother's experience was beyond the pale. It wasn't OK for him to vent his frustrations with his profession, unsolicited, to a new, elderly patient on their first office visit. No doubt, the prospect of having to go to Santa Rosa or Redding for a service that is offered in Eureka, is frustrating. But that isn't the source of our angst. It's purely the lack of compassion, consideration, and congeniality displayed by Dr. Mohammad, that is the motivation for this review. read more

We have had nothing but issues with them just to get an appt to get checked for fluid behind my eyes. My Dr sent the referral as request by neurology last month (April) the 14th to be exact. As well and insurance approval. I called once 2 wks after the referral was sent as told by my Dr and got no answer. I was in touch with my Dr's office between calls. Then I was told to call back. I called back on May 13th, 3 times that morning. I left a msg on the referral coordinator Vm because according the the secretary the referral lady wasn't there. I waited until may 18th which was a Wed and then I msg'd my Dr's office on their app and let them know I still haven't gotten any response back from the eyes dr.. my drwrote me back a few days later telling my that the referral was sent and authorized last month (april) On May 23rd I got a msg from the referral coordinator at my Dr's office and she told me "I just called over to Humboldt Medical Eye for you, unfortunately I was unable to get through to anyone and had to leave a message as well. I did go ahead and fax another copy of your referral over to them with a note to please give you a call to schedule. If I don't hear back from them I will follow up with their office again." Direct quote from my email from her. June 3rd I msg my Dr's again because I still haven't heard anything from them. June 7th my Dr's office calls them again "I just gave them another call and asked them if they can reach out to you to schedule. I spoke to their receptionist who said she is going to "follow up with their referral coordinator about it." Hopefully they are able to give you a call soon, I am not sure what they delay is on their end". Another direct quote from my Dr's office coordinator stating they have contacted HMEA. Now here we are today. I got a call from a social worker/medical advocate telling me that she called HMEA and they told her a completely different story that they tried to contact me in June and they couldn't get ahold of me and now they aren't taking any new patients. I told my partner this and he decided to call and they told yet another story to him My partners experience from just an hour ago with them Amanda from the referrals department stated that she tried to call in June but didn't leave a message, when she realized what she said she tried to back track and she that wasn't what she meant. Even though she was reading it off of her computer. She also stated the the doctors office never contacted her when I had talked to the receptionist just today and someone had called and left 3 messages just last week and the Dr herself had called after they failed to contact anyone back after the first few weeks. She also stated that it would be best to just go down to U.C. Davis that NO ONE in town would be able to it the eye exam. She was very rude and the phone cut out in the middle of our conversation, I have no idea if it disconnected or she hung up on me. I'm so pissed off right now now they aren't taking any new patients as of right now according to what my social told me on my VM and my partner was just told on the phone. This just makes me so angry because I can't medical travel right now and there's apparently no kther place that takes my insurance and I can't afford to pay out of pocket. I do not recommend this place and they may get butthurt that I posted this review. But if they say anything I have weeks of screenshots from emails from my Dr's and my calls logs as well as a vm from my worker saying everything that this review stated. This review is for Dr. Mohammed specifically. The office staff and medical assistant were wonderful. I took a relative in for an appointment and had no idea who they were seeing. Dr. Mohammed walked in, did not even introduce himself and said, "There's probably nothing we can do for you. I am leaving in two weeks, so I will not be able to do anything, but I'll take a look." He criticized my relative for changing eye doctors and told them they should've stayed with their original eye doctor. My relative only changed because they heard such great things about Dr. Mizoguchi. If they had seen him I probably wouldn't be writing this. Dr. Mohammed needs a lesson on bedside manners and I pity his future patients wherever he moves to. read more

The one star is for her office staff. Dr.,Apte gets zero stars and here's why; Back story. Broke out with Shingles first on my eyebrow. Quickly spread to my eyelid forehead scalp along the nerve path. My eye swelled burned and felt like it had glass in it. Emergency room gave anti viral's and recommended that I see an Eye Doctor immediately because once Shingles enters the eye and Cornea it can cause blindness. My local connections got me into this place which I was thankful for. The office staff was not so friendly but good enough and I was just happy I could see someone. I was placed with Dr Apte. And very sick. Omg what a disappointing experience. She was rude, dismissive, gossiped about her Co-worker in front of me to her assistant, and clearly did not understand how critical shingles is around the eye regarding potential blindness. I should have been give An antibiotic since I had all symptoms of shingles being in my eye. She told me to call her immediately if I had a list of certain symptoms, which I basically already had. I was sent on my way and told it has to run its course. Well, the next morning I woke up sick sick sick with my eye swollen shut and severe pain. Had all symptoms she told me to watch for. I called her on-call number she gave to me. She called me back about 30 minutes later about 8:00 am ish. She made it clear I woke her. She said there was nothing she could do except to Refere me to a specialist out of the area. She somehow, without looking at me, decided I did not have shingles in my eye and she was sure I would be fine. She asked me to look in my eye and tell what it looked like lol. My husband helped me open my eyelid and I told her it was bloodshot, felt like it was one fire, felt like I had little shards of glass in it and it was swollen and purple like I'd been in a fight. She said oh it sounds fine but if I wanted to see her I could call her office on Monday and see her in the Fortuna office. Why did she tell me to call her if she was unwilling to see me? Clearly not in this to help people. Bare with me folks because it's important for you. On Monday I called Dr. Gibbs in Eureka. He took me in immediately. He gave me an exam and immediately said I had the shingles on my Cornea and I should have been given an eye antibiotic ointment. He explained that I was under medicated (St. Joseph's Hospital Emergency Room has under medicated me with antivirals) and he increased all medications. Dr.,Gibbs was outstanding and literally saved my eye site! To be clear, Dr. Apte did nothing to prevent this horrible illness from spreading into my eye like she should have. And she was rude, would ask me a question but not let me finish my answer. I was very sick and she was dismissive and condescending. She is definitely not going to last here. Clearly, she has no bedside manners and must come from a place where people are not understanding or caring. Dr. Apte you are not better than us so stop acting like we are cows to be prodded in and out of your practice in ten minutes. Take time, slow down and at least pretend you care. Fake it till you make it, as they say. It's not just about numbers and if that's what you think then you are in the wrong community. Perhaps your being over scheduled and can't handle it but something must change with you. There is a learning curve while working with the public but you better get with it. Thank you read more

Dr. Mizoguchi is an amazing doctor with that rare combination of incredible skills AND a kind and caring bedside manner. He spends as much time with you as you need in order to get all your questions answered. He performed cataract surgeries on both my eyes. Both were easy, painless procedures with stellar results for my vision. In addition, Dr. Mizoguchi is extremely thorough. He diagnosed a close friend with a serious, non-eye related problem requiring immediate surgery at UCSF. The doctors there kept saying, "Your ophthalmologist caught this?" Yes, he did, because he's really smart and he cares. I wish I could get all my health care from him. read more

1. I called to make an appointment and the girl that made the appointment was either training or just didn't have a clue how to do her job. 2. I had to wait close to an hour to get into the room. 3. The staff is just odd and socially weird. 4. Dr. told me my eyes were fine and that I just needed some artificial tears for dryness. I knew my eyes were not fine, went to a different Dr. for 2nd opinion and ended up with 3 medications to combat the inflammation and other issues that were previously missed. The Dr. is no longer there so hopefully the other Dr's. are more informative. read more

Dr. Dipali Apte is rude and rough. She refused to even look at me when I had waited over 90 minutes to be seen. She came into the room looking only at the computer while mumbling "sorry for the delay." While taking measurements she shoved the equipment into my eyes so it hurt. I reacted and she said, "Don't pull away." My eyes were streaming and she didn't even offer me a tissue until she noticed I was fumbling for a kleenex in my pocket. I won't go back to this doctor. Dr. Mizoguchi is kind and friendly and efficient. He needs a new partner, and needs to get rid of this one. She is damaging his practice. read more

I took my 5 year old to Dr. Mizoguchi yesterday for an exam. He was SO wonderful with her and made her and I feel so comfortable! He had the most amazing warmth, sweetness, and silliness that completely eased any anxiety she came in with. He took the time to explain everything to me that was going on, drawing it out on paper, and looking up information to show me on the computer. Then he wrote out a prescription on his notepad for me to take her out for an ice cream treat, complete with a sweet drawing for her. I don't think he's specifically a children's optometrist but he sure has a special way that is so rare. I adored him and was grateful for his clear information and his time. read more

I was so pleasantly surprised by how wonderful my experience at this office has been, and especially with Dr. Mizoguchi. I have had wonderful doctors in the past, but none have been more clear, more caring, and more encouraging than he has been. First time here, I had to wait an hour past my appointment time to be seen. My eyes were checked and diagnosed my a technician NOT a doctor, they then dilated my eyes and sent me back to the waiting room for another 20 minutes. When I was finally seen my a doctor all she did was shine an extremely bright light in my eyes and told me all looked well but I wasn't producing enough tears so I should take drops, meanwhile tears were coming out of my eyes since I have extreme light sensitivity with out eyes being dilated. I asked multiple times what my prescription was since they didn't use any technology other than a technician using different lenses and relying on my response to reading letters. My eyes hadn't changed in years so I was surprised by the fact she finally told me they changed but not by much but I still didn't get an answer to what had changed. I was then told I could leave and checkout at the front desk to receive my prescription for glasses but I would have to go elsewhere since they are not an optometrist. When I checked out after paying a $55 copay I was asked to pay another $48 to receive my "refraction" or eye glasses prescription. I refused since I was not informed of this and did not have to pay however I was even more upset when I got the paper and noticed they changed my prescription by 3+ points and my eyes have always been the same but this prescription said each eye was a different prescription. I will be getting a second opinion and never returning here. TO TOP IT OFF I WAS NOT PROVIDED ANY GLASSES FOR THE DRIVE HOME WITH DILATED EYES. THIS CAN CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE. LUCKY I HAD SUNGLASSES AND ONLY LIVE A FEW BLOCKS AWAY, STILL HAD TEARS ROLLING DOWN MY FACE TILL I GOT HOME. GET YOUR PLACE TOGETHER THIS WAS A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. read more
