I first came here in 2006 and got first-class treatment from the famous Dr. Loren Azevedo, who taught me the word anisometropia (having very different corrections needed for each eye). Since then, I moved away and came back, and came here again yesterday. They're still excellent! Dr. Appy addressed all my questions about my odd couple of eye conditions. They still had my records from 2006. He knew all about epithelial basement-cell-membrane corneal dystrophy (where the outer layer of the cornea bunches up), and was able to advise me on where to get the right stuff to keep it from flaring up. He also explained how the ointment works--something my previous eye doctors never had time for. Then I sat down with Jeff in the front room to see about getting new frames and lenses. He said, "I'm not a salesman." He was just there to advise me. And sure enough, we found that he was able to adjust both of my last two pairs of glasses so that I had really good acuity--no need for new lenses! Then she left a message saying she can't send my glasses off till she gets the full amount, and she said she did all the math wrong. So I had to pay a lot more money. Not cool. My husband & I came here for our first eye exams and were very impressed! A to Z is excellent with communication and gave us several reminders about our appointment. They were very helpful over the phone with an insurance question, too. Our eye exams went smoothly and every single person that helped us was highly professional and personable, as well. When it came to getting glasses, A to Z helped us patiently every step of the way and had tons of frames to choose from, at all different price points. Even checkout was delightful, with a very lovely coordinator. My mother has been coming here for years and also has nothing but great things to say. I have very good vision insurance, new to me this year and I was surprised to learn I have a $500 allowance towards lenses and frames. I called VSP, the insurance provider, prior to my appointment to confirm my benefits. I made an appointment with A to Z Eye Care in Arcata, CA and asked at that time that they also confirm my benefits (prior to my appointment). I was assured by staff at A to Z of the $500 allowance. I arrived for my appointment and asked reception to confirm the benefits once again... which they did by pulling my plan up on-line, so I proceeded to choose frames in keeping with that amount. After choosing frames, the man helping with this informed me that I actually had only a $300 allowance, and I'd be charged for the difference (over $200). I asked that they call VSP but was told by the person in "billing" that "we deal with them all the time, $300 is all they will pay". So I paid the difference, that day, almost a month ago. Arriving home that day I called VSP again, and was assured, again, of the $500 allowance and that A to Z was mistaken in charging me the additional $200. I called A to Z and was told I would have to wait for the claim to process, about one month before they would do anything. Today, I called VSP claims and found they just received the claim yesterday, and that they are allowing the $500 frame/lens allowance, and they will call A to Z to correct them. This was stupidly ridiculous, and I've had an unnecessary charge to a credit card for over $200 in error that A to Z absolutely refused to do anything about even though they could easily have called VSP themselves at any time. I should have refused the glasses that day, in retrospect, and I certainly will not return to give them any further business. read more

The appointment was very organized, the workers kind and respectful, and the overall business is high-tech, which led to decreased wait times and more efficiency. I was visiting the Arcata/Eureka area for a week on vacation. As I was getting into my rental car one morning, I bumped my head into the ceiling of the car, causing my prescription sunglasses to detach a piece of the eyeglass frame. I looked around for an optician shop to see if someone could assist me - and re-attach the piece that came off. I made my way over to "A to Z Eye Care" - an eye doctor/optician shop located in the Sunny Brae section of Arcata. The receptionist asked me what I needed, I told her, and she asked me to take a seat, and someone would be with me shortly. Within 10 minutes or so, a young lady came out and called my name. I told her my tale of woe, and within 5 minutes she had "fixed" my frames! I was prepared to pay for the repair assistance - but they weren't having any of that! They sent me on my way - very happy that my sunglasses were not broken for the remainder of my vacation! Super nice folks! This review is the story of a business that provides a service, one in which we all will have a need for at some time. Specifically, it detail's my experience as a 1st time customer. Sadly, and perhaps because of this, it might explain why I was treated in the manner that I certainly did not deserve with regards to the CUSTOMER SERVICE I received. This business provides eye exam's and has employee's who then assist customers in finding & fitting eyeglasses [Opticians] as it also sells eye wear. Mr. Abby and Mr. Johnson are optometrists who do the examinations. Having not attended medical school, these individuals cannot call themselves eye doctors but rather, a doctor of optometry. The difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist; the latter must complete many more years of medical training than optometrists and opticians. As such, an ophthalmologist is the most qualified among eye care professionals to diagnose and treat a wide range of eye diseases, beyond the routine eye and vision care provided by an optometrist. Since this business has but optometrists providing eye exams and selling glasses, why then does it want to model itself off as if it's some full-blown medical practice? I saw no employee's wearing medical scrubs, and I don't believe they perform any out-patient surgery of any kind. But yet, it seems as if they can't be bothered to help anyone who comes into this business right off the street. And that's because they're REAL BIG on appointments, even just to look at eye glass frames! I came into this store "unannounced" to look at frames. Found 3 but 2 of them were beyond my budget. Met with an Optician [Ms Sheila] who gave me pricing info [there was a sale on sunglasses] on the 3rd frame. I spent 12 - 15 minutes with her and during this time the receptionist came over and interrupted me as I was speaking to inform this employee that another customer was waiting to speak with them over the telephone. As I was attempting to end our conversation as we got up from our chairs, Ms Sheila, without any warning or explanation, very abruptly and sternly says to me, "excuse me Sir, but I have another customer waiting on the phone for me!" I replied, "oh right, sorry." An appointment was made for me the following week and I was given a card with it's info from the receptionist. On a Friday before my appointment the following week, I received a voice-mail msg [missed the call] reminding me of it which was followed shortly afterwards with a text-message. I called and confirmed that I would be there. On the day of my appt, 2 hours before it was scheduled and I received an E-mail message reminder. Despite being over the age of 60, having not yet lost my marbles, I felt these "reminders" were bordering on the verge of STALKING. If I have a card with a date/time on it for an appt, rest assured I don't think I'll forget it. So on a Tuesday afternoon after Memorial Day, I arrived a few minutes before my appointment time. After informing the receptionist of my presence, I sat down and waited for the Optician. So what happened next? Exactly; 14:30 became 14:35 and then 14:40, and then 14:45 and finally 14:50. At this point I wondered, "if this business is so BIG on APPOINTMENTS, then why have I been kept waiting for 20 minutes?" No mention was made when I checked-in with the receptionist that they were running late. Two woman were sitting in the lobby and eventually were seen by an employee(s). Since I HAD made an APPOINTMENT but it didn't look as if it was going to be honored, I got up and went to the counter and informed one of two receptionists that I had other commitments that afternoon and would have to leave. As to why I was treated the way I have described here, well, the answer to that question might be: I walked in off the street, WITHOUT an APPOINTMENT [to just look at eye frames] and to add insult to injury, I used a different eye care facility so I already had an eye prescription in hand. So at this point, this eye store hadn't made any money off of me at all. OH the horrors of CUSTOMERS like me!!! More specifically though, as to why I received such PATHETIC CUSTOMER SERVICE, perhaps it's because of what I overheard one of the receptionist's say to someone who had called in. I heard nothing from the person who had placed the call to this business for the receptionist was using the telephone handset. But I did hear the last words the receptionist said to the person on the other end of the line, and those words were: "I can place your name on our 'new customer wait-list' if you'd like?" Well there you have it folks, this Eye store which pretends to want to consider itself some sort of "High-Falutin' medical establishment" replete with all manner of nuisance appointments [that they can't seem to keep themselves!] had little o' me just walk in off the street. Never impressed with this place. They always seem to act like they are doing you a huge favor by selling you expensive frames and making you wait. I've had good experiences with the doctor, but the front desk and optical staff is often rude. They seem to forget not all of us can afford $500 frames. When I tied to explain what I could afford based on my insurance they seemed annoyed. I came in months later when said frames broke and they couldn't find the time to fix them. I have been seeing Dr. Appy now for over 10 years. He is a great optometrist and takes his time making sure that my eyes are healthy. All of the staff at A 2 Z Eye Care are friendly and helpful. My only complaint is their phone situation. It is really hard to get through to anybody as it seems they don't have enough people to answer the phone and take care of walk in customers. This place is aces in my book. Super hands on and great communication skills. While everyone else was super professional the tech was a little rough around the edges but not in a bad way. She is clearly a diamond in the rough. She was super fun and made my experience over the top. Even when I had a question from three years ago they found someone who could sit and explain the details. Even if the staff did not know the answer they found someone who did know the answer. After ordering me the glasses I wanted (not on display) in a short amount of time they sent me on my way confident that all the bases were covered. Warning: The cost of this place is way too high! Be sure you ask about their prices before making an appointment. This place, while providing a good eye exam, is much more expensive than other offices that provide the same services. For example, they quoted the cost of replacing one bifocal lens as $250. The cost at a comparable optician's was $58. To emphasize it: Other place: $58 This place: $250 That represents a 431% markup. That's not just higher, that's "insult your intelligence" higher. Similarly, the eye exam was $161 compared with my last eye exam somewhere else of $65. My optician told me similar stories of big price differences. Why are they so expensive? They have a lot of people in their very nice office, with high-tech machines and room-to-room communications systems. So, don't make the same mistake I made. Awful experience from the start. I was forced to pay double the going amount for a contact lens refitting, despite this place being listed as an in-network provider by my insurance. The billing woman was curt, rude and had no time for explaining my exorbitant bill. I then wanted to try a different brand of contact lens that they did not have when they gave me trial lenses. Their answer is that I need to pay them for another "refitting" in order to change my prescription. So let's get this straight: I chose the lens that you put on my prescription and now I have to pay to try a different lens? So now I'm stuck with lenses that, while the best out of the ones they let me try, are inferior and less comfortable than other options out there. Thanks A to Z for making this so difficult. These people are happy to cite "FDA regulations" in order to forgo premium customer service and make their money. I recommend checking out other options before this money mill. read more

I should have heeded the warning from Al M. that reads "The cost is WAY TOO HIGH!" I did not. Now I sit here with my disposable contacts that got $20 dollars more expensive per box without any notification. This comes after they were "back ordered" and are three weeks late. I tried ordering online, calling A to Z, and I still had to chase my lenses down. It turns out my old contacts are still available online for $40 bucks as opposed to the $90 A to Z charged. I am in such need of contacts, I have to eat the extra expense. A to Z owned up to the lack of communication and are getting me extra pairs, which is nice. However, everything they sell is price gouged and I no longer trust them. As said by Al M., they give a great eye exam (in spite of the feeling of being herded through their place). STOP THERE! OK, after my previous NIGHTMARE (with another practice), I returned to my old eye care office = A to Z... I was never happier!! My experience was AWESOME! Maria is AWESOME & so helpful (as is all the staff). I was able to "checkout" (like the library) several pair of frames, so I could take them home and try them out before buying...Isn't that a great option???!!!??? I have never been to a practice who allows you to checkout the frames...I loved it! I was able to wear each frame for an hour (to get the feel, etc...) and I decided on a pair... I have now been to this eye care facility twice and they are better than anyone other place I have been to before coming here. They are so caring, understanding the needs of there patients. I have an old pair of glasses that I love and they where able to find the exact pair for my next set of glasses. Even though they are pricy its worth every penny, I would rather deal with high price than have somewhere very cheap and not have a great exam. This place really looks deep into the eyes to make sure everything is healthy and no issues have risen that could cause problems. They really have a caring heart and that is why I enjoy going there.
