Spelt Pancake with Poppy Seed ice cream dessert
    Jessica S.

If I'm being honest, there were two points where I thought to myself, "I might have chosen poorly, when booking here." The first was when I had to change our reservation time - I went back online and saw they had openings pretty much all day long. (My cynical mind went, "why?") The second was when we arrived, and walked in to a tiny and packed bar area. I'm happy to report that any doubts or fears were promptly squashed the second our waiter led us to our table, in the dining room, through the bar area. The dining room isn't large, but it was modern and bright, and very comfortable. There were only a handful of parties already at tables when we sat down, but by the time we left, they were packed to the gills. Our first point of business was - you guessed it - beer! I went with a Stiegl-Goldbräu, because it was known to me and because the restaurant didn't have a Dunkel (apparently Dunkel Bier isn't as popular in Austria as I'd hoped). The entree I chose was the Austrian Cheese Dumplings, mostly because it came with a side green salad (thank goodness). My husband went with the Veal Goulash, and also got a side salad. The spaetzle was good, but way too rich. It was also served at the same time as the green salad, so it had a chance to cool and congeal as I finished the starter. It's unfortunate, because allowing it to cool meant it lost that ooey-gooey factor that was so appealing. Was the dish good? Yes, it had good flavor and the dumplings themselves were soft and retained the bite of the cheese. Would I order it again, or would I recommend it as an entree for a friend? No, I don't think I would. Or, maybe I would recommend it to those that enjoy these kinds of stick-to-your-ribs hearty meals, but I would suggest that they request the salad to be served ahead of the spaetzle, to ensure the dumplings are served piping hot. Or maybe you just need to eat the dumplings first, and salad last? The dish has a smattering of fried onions served on top, and I will say that the crunchy texture of those onions helped break up the creamy richness of the dumplings. The salad, by the way, was de-freaking-lightful. I don't know what it is about simple green salads in Germany and Austria, but they know what the heck they're doing with those dishes. My husband's goulash, meanwhile, quickly disappeared from his plate. He said that the meat was the best he'd had since the start of our trip, and was able to enjoy his small spaetzle serving, as he at least had the goulash sauce to help break up the cheesiness factor. My second pint of beer a Stiegl-Paracelsus Bio-Zwickl, at the recommendation of my husband. He was right that it had really good flavor - both toasted and malty - and that I'd enjoy it. In fact, we wanted to take our time with our drinks, so we ordered a dessert. Of course. Why we thought a Spelt Pancake with Poppy Seed ice cream was a good idea, I still don't know, but before we knew it, our waiter was bringing the plate to our table. The pancake was similar to a crepe, wrapped burrito-style around a couple small scoops of poppy seed ice cream. That sounds weird, right? It is, but it also really worked. Neither element was overly sweet, and the poppy seed ice cream added a nutty, earthy flavor that we both really enjoyed. We would have stuck around a bit longer to take advantage of the warmth and atmosphere, but the restaurant was filling up and we had tickets to a concert at Hohensalzburg that we had to get to. Our waiter was incredibly friendly, and extremely apologetic when cashing us out, as he'd been run ragged by all the parties in the dining room. The poor guy was working that whole space by himself! He also negotiated his tip *down*, for crying out loud. We tried to tip him really well - both for his service and for the fact that he was working on Christmas night - but he wouldn't hear of it. We tried arguing at first, but I made my husband stop when I realized we were making the waiter a bit uncomfortable. He chose the tip amount that he felt good about, and we were on our merry way. My husband was still in shock, but I reminded him that we couldn't impose our American way on that sweet Austrian waiter. This was a great find. We would absolutely come back the next time we're in Salzburg.

Was here for dinner. Ordered the Wienerschnitzel (Organic pork) with the cranberry sauce with potatoes; and Blueberry cheesecake for dessert. Everything was DELICIOUS! for the price itself was worth it! The place was cozy as well.

Hip little spot serving good Austrian food, also has vegetarian offerings. We stopped for a beer and stayed for the food. Thank the gods for blessing us with room for two in the small, crowded dining room; the food was fabulous. I had venison stew with red sauerkraut (it's like candy to me!); my friend had pork loin (with a crispy crust -- pork fat candy!). Food the way it's supposed to be: fresh and prepared with passion for detail you can taste. The venison used sweet notes to tickle my tastebuds; the pork was juicy and fatty (the candy skin sweet), with a cabbage salad that leaned toward horseradish to balance things. Delightful. The hip atmosphere didn't hurt our experience: original artwork and good tunes rounded out the best dinner I had during my weekend in Salzburg.

I came here for dinner with two friends, and I ordered a meat dish that came with some sort of pasta (gnocchi maybe?). The meat was okay, and it was honestly way too much food. I didn't want to eat it towards the end of my meal. The flavor was okay, but I think it could've been stronger. It reminded me of Chinese beef stew a bit. The noodles were good with the sauce! I'm not a big meat eater, so I wish the dish came with more vegetables (there were no vegetables at all). It was okay though; not superb, but not bad.

Pork two ways with grilled cabbage and dumplings. Amazing!

Spent a week traveling around Bavaria with a quick day trip to Salzburg and this was without question the best food we had the entire time, and that is saying a LOT. Visited for lunch and loved the comfortable, "ski-lodge" feeling in the bar area where we grabbed a table and were immediately set up with drinks and friendly servers. The service overall was stellar. But the food is something truly special. In our group, two dishes in particular stood out - both daily specials: the beef goulash and the pork and grilled cabbage. Highly, highly recommend this place - it's not crazy expensive and it will be an unforgettable experience.

Yelpers so…read morerecommended this place that we tried to go our first night in town, and were advised that it might be a 30 minute wait -- but the staff *also* told the 7 parties ahead of us that it might be a 30 minute wait for them, too. So we went elsewhere. We went back the next night at an off-hour and while the food was fine, I would have been highly disappointed had we waited in line for 30 minutes, let alone 2 or more hours. This restaurant has a prime location and a strong online reputation. And perhaps our experience was impacted by the fact that we went at an off-hour. Still, there are much better options, with equal character, available across the city. Consider branching out -- and check my other Salzburg reviews for other alternatives.

We came in around 5pm for an early dinner before our train back to Munich and was able to grab a table for 4. We got incredibly lucky because the restaurant really filled up and by the time we left, there was a long line down the block. Of course we had to have their Original Wiener Schnitzel, which was so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We also had a Salzburger Nockerl, which is a classic Austrian soufflé dessert that is considered a culinary symbol of Salzburg. You do have to order this about 20 minutes in advance, so we ordered it when we made our entree orders. This was really good and honestly, more than enough for our group of 4. I also highly recommend their house beer, which was one of the best beers I had during our 10 day trip.

We were sat at the opposite end of the table from another couple in a little room. The servers were plenty friendly and spoke good English to assist us. My husband got a burger and I ordered the Mac and cheese and a salad and we shared. It was a lot of food! We also ordered the pancake shredded dessert which came with a jelly type of sauce. Everything was good but it was sooo heavy. I certainly recommend sharing so that you have enough room in your stomach. We would return next time we were in Salzburg.

He recommended the Bärenwirt. Returning to Salzburg with our 11 adult children and grandchildren, we wanted them to have a similar authentic experience so we made a reservation at our old haunt, which has been in operations since 1663. Things have changed over the last 16 years. On our first visit, the menu was only in German and our server spoke to us in German until we threw in the towel and admitted, "Ich spreche nicht sehr gut Deutsch. Englisch, bitte?" (I don't speak German well. English, please?) Now, 16 years later, English has become the default and today, the menu is presented in four languages. But the food is still just as authentic and delicious. Taking grandkids who range from 10 to 15 years of age, we were bracing for a few refrains of, "I don't LIKE that! It's weird!" or similar rants, but we heard none of it. All the kids (and parents, too, for that matter) dove gamely into the menu and found things that were to their liking. The menu is large and varied. Main dishes include roast pork, pasta, sausage with roasted potatoes, dumplings, goulash, schnitzel, fried chicken, boiled beef and (of course) bratwurst. The food was good, there was an excellent variety, and it was brought out quickly. Prices for main dishes were quite reasonable, with most under €20. Wiener Schnitzel was the most expensive, at €28,90 but it was an outlier. The only issue I had was the price of the soft drinks. Between our grandkids, they had 10 Cokes - at €5.90 EACH. That was €59 for sodas; more than we paid for all of our beers. My wife was determined that, for dessert, the kids and grands would all taste Kaiserschmarren mit Zwetschkenröster - cut-up pancake with raisins topped with powdered sugar and served with a jam for dipping. A truly Austrian experience that everyone enjoyed, though some more than others. On the night we visited, we encountered several other parties of Americans. I have no way of knowing whether the place has become that popular with visitors or management simply corralled us into the same room. Regardless, it was a very pleasant evening and one I'm sure we will repeat the next time we're in Salzburg.

We ordered a couple of appetizers to share. One that stood out was their trio dip and I particularly liked the pork belly crackling dip that was served with sourdough bread. It definitely is not the most healthy as it was greasy, but super flavorful with great texture from the cracklings. Another one I enjoyed was their Regensburger Wurstsalat. The sausages were thinly sliced paired with a crispy, tangy vinaigrette which was refreshing especially in a hot summer day. The scallions and red onions added another level of flavor and texture. For main, I ordered their braised pork belly and was pleasantly surprised. Th meat was tender, skin was still crispy and the sauce was hearty yet not too salty. My kids tried their schnitzel and they enjoyed it. However, my husband ordered one of their beef dish and I was told it was dry and salty. I honestly would recommended to just stick with pork when in Germany/Austria and stay away from beef because ever beef dishes we've tried were not good. Overall, this is your typical Biergarten with plenty of outdoor seating and tv's available to watch any sports. Our servers were all very friendly and relatively quick Austrian standard. The only thing is some tv's streamed ahead of others so the people who's watching the slower tv were a little upset as they would've heard the reaction of others before they can see the actions.
