Our first stop in Salzburg, and one that really set the tone for food, beer and service. We got into Salzburg early on a Monday morning, and after walking from the train station to the hotel, we realized we were famished, and set out to find somewhere warm to sit with something good to eat. And drink, of course. Gablerbräu wasn't technically open when we stopped in (about five minutes before their official open time), but the awesome waiter at the door invited us in from the cold, and told us to grab a table at the dining room in the back. Once settled, he came back to our table to offer menus and get our beer orders. I went with a Gösser Märzen, and my husband ordered their Hausbier. After a bit of menu perusing, we both decided to go for their Schnitzel. The scents coming from the kitchen as we sat there, sipping our beers (the Märzen initially disappointed based on the color alone, but I did enjoy the malty flavor and the hint of a hoppy bite) got my stomach grumbling. I don't know what they were cooking up, but the scents of roasted meat, fresh bread, garlic and spices had me practically drooling in expectation. The schnitzel did not disappoint, though I do wish I'd chosen another dish - only because I now wish we had sampled more than one of their offerings. The breading on the schnitzel was crisp, never got soggy, and the meat was juicy and flavorful. The potatoes were buttery, and the tart bite provided by the cranberry-like sauce added another nice layer. We finished our meal with a second pint (I went with the Hausbier for my second round, following my husband's glowing review of it. I did enjoy it - it had an unexpected dark flavor and a bit of hoppiness) and a lot of fun conversation with our waiter. This was one spot we considered revisiting before leaving Salzburg, but the timing didn't work out (the next day was Christmas Eve, and they were closed up through the 26th). We had the lasagna and the salmon pasta. We both found our pasta to be cooked perfectly. We both thought our dishes to be delicious. It was served quickly for the area and the waiter was efficient and pleasant. The bread and spreads appetizer could be skipped. Great little restaurant that partners with tours so you know it is good. We ordered the BEEF GOULASH, SALAD, and some type of FISH but I forget. The beef was really nice and tender and the bread dumplings were absolutely delicious. I paired the leftover sauce/remaining soup of the goulash with the pretzels (which were more expensive here at 1.60 but they were still delicious) and it was perfect. The salad's dressing was amazing but I was not a big fan of the prosciutto on top which was a bit too salty for my taste. We ordered the bitter chocolate soufflé with passion fruit and vanilla ice cream for dessert. Wish we ended the meal without it because the cake was really dry and overly sweet. It wasn't like the usual soufflé with a melting chocolate center and their chocolate drizzle was too overwhelming. The sourness of the passion fruit balanced it out but it didn't help that much. Overall, nice quite clean place. Only problem we had was with the service. People didn't pay much attention to us when we walked in and it took us forever to find the only one server they had for the day. Good food, lovely ambiance, affordable prices, friendly staff, but slllloooooowwww service! If you're "hangry", or more importantly your impatient lover is, don't eat here. But if you're cool, got time, and want to sit down and relax over a long meal, this is a great place. I think its known as the oldest restaurant in Salzburg? €11,70 daily special: Roast pork with dumplings, and a side of kraut. Cheap,filling, and good! There's a wide variety of entrees ranging from €10-30+, so you could splurge if you wanted to. There's also a selection of draft beers for €3-4. Our poor friendly waitress was hard at work...she was working 9-12 tables simultaneously at any given time. After a day of Salzburg highlights we were ready for beir and food. Took advantage of Rick Steeves suggestion and went across the Salzac for a pub crawl. We got as far as this lovely restaurant and settled in for a scrumptious dinner and beverage. I order the chicken breast with spinach in a mushroom cream sauce. They love to cook with mushrooms here und Ich love to eat them! My daughter had the ravioli and my sister-in-law the veggie pie. All ist gut, in fact really really gut. Just off the main tourist area but enough out of there to be reasonably priced and not too crowded. Highly recommend. read more

A very enjoyable, well run, efficient restaurant with very good food. Many tourists seem to eat here, but that's really neither here nor there in terms of evaluating it. There is the indoor restaurant and two outdoor eating spaces. It was a warm evening and everyone wanted to be outdoors. Finding a table was difficult but when the Maitre 'd saw us looking he immediately took us to a "reserved" table and removed the sign. He figured they just put out reserved signs when they don't want to be overwhelmed with patrons as several tables had them. We ordered some Austrian wine, a Gruner Vetliner, and it was excellent. These Austrian whites are simple yet very dry and refreshing. Not as complex or deep as a Chardonnay or even a Pino Grigio. I had the chicken dish and it was wonderful, succulent and tender. I have to wonder what Europeans do with the chicken preparation as it is never dry and cooked to perfection. The only downside is how busy the restaurant gets at peek hours, yet they seem to be on top of it. read more

I think Salzburg is one of those tourist towns where it is hard to get good service and a genuine meal. Despite being steps from tourist areas such as Mozartplatz and Getreidegasse, Gablerbrau transports you back in time with good Bavarian food and very helpful service. As with most places in the area, the server spoke perfect english and the menu was well laid out with different choices beyond Salzburg cuisine. My daughter enjoyed her ravioli stuffed with pumpkin and fried in brown butter (it was quite rich, though). I chowed down on bratwurst, saurkraut and fried potatoes (washed down with two big lagers!) and my wife ordered the goulash. I had ordered beef goulash the night before elsewhere and she had had a taste of mine, but this did not measure up. The place is pretty small, or if there are other rooms up or down, we did not see them because we sat in the front. The only other warning I will make is that our cell service went to 3G (and there is no free wifi) when we descended into Gablerbrau - not their fault (although wifi would be nice). read more

Really bad service! The waiter was rude and arrogant. We ordered loaded fries but was given normal fries-apparently a mistake. We asked to change. He said he changed the order to normal fries for us because the loaded fries would take too long and our food would be cold. This didn't make sense. I belive he made a mistake but tried to make an excuse for his mistake. Even he did change it for us for a good reason, he would have asked us first. Later I asked for adding some hot water for my mint hot tea, he refused. At the end, he even asked for tip. We refused, of course. The service was poor and the food was terrible. We ordered beer and wine right away, but our soup and then our entrees arrived before our beverages. We reminded the waiter, who said those came from the bar area -not his job. My pumpkin soup did not come with pumpkin oil and seeds as described. It tasted as if it came from a can or box and was topped with 3 soggy croutons. My mate's hamburger was good and the fries were OK. Excellent, excellent food! A few in our party tried the Wiener Schnitzel and loved it. I went the other way and had the vegetarian Ravioli. So so good! Loved the buttery sauce. The salad with olives and giant feta cubes was delicious as well. Great wine/beer selection too. Our waiter was very helpful too. I didn't think we would like this kind of food but it was awesome! The Wiener schnitzel was fabulous. The breading was so good. The potatoes had a wonderful flavor. Also had the beef goulash. Just like southern beef stew. But better! So tender & wonderful. Wish they served it with those potatoes instead of dumplings bc the dumplings were not my favorite. So, i arrived in Salzburg earlier today for a week of business meetings. Mentioned to the hotel front desk that i was looking for as restaurant that had local dishes, good beer and an overall good vibe and they highly recommended Gablerbräu. I have included a couple of pictures of the restaurant interior if you are curious. I started with a 0,3l of their Hausbier and had the beef soup with crepe strips as a warmup. I ordered the Schnitzel and a 0,5l of the Hausbier for the main course. Again, everything was excellent and will definitely be back. Service was also quite good. read more

Worst service I've ever had, we had a large group when we arrived they only had 2 glasses at each table for 8, from there it took 2 hrs to get our main course. The food wasn't as bad as the service but still lacked in taste, after we received our main course it took 2 hrs to get more water.( for context a member in our group has a really bad nut allergy) they gave here ice cream and us cake the ice cream she ordered contain a large amount of nuts after informing them about her allergy they did not compensate us and they charged us for the still no iced water. This has not only been the worst restaurant in Austria but the worst I've ever been to period. read more

This place was classy and seated us very quickly. Most places cringed when we walked in with 2 toddlers but this place was very accepting of which was awesome. The goulash soup was Delish. I also had the river trout which was a large plate and has some of the most delicious risotto ever! read more

This early century brewery had been remodeled into a friendly hotel and fantastic traditional Austrian restaurant. Most of the original woodwork and the ceramic hearth had been retained and the rather big restaurant are perfect for any big event or intimate gathering. The traditional dishes were fantastic and the new world touch of the fresh salad is mouth watering good! Make sure you also try the soufflé. read more

Probably the best meal of our trip! Friendly staff, delicious food and great atmosphere. It was a mix of modern food with a traditional twist. They served pretzel bread for appetizer, yum! We ordered the wienerschnitzel, oxtail, ravioli and smoked char. All surpassed in flavor. Finally a wienerschnitzel that was not dry! Th oxtail stew was hearty and the oxtail just feel of the bone. Very good. I am pretty much vegan and this place has great vegetarian dishes that was close enough for me to have an Austrian food experience. I had the potato leek soup and eggplant schnitzel and of course a couple Austrian beers. Very good! The feel of the restaurant is great and it has a lot of interesting history that I learned about while here. My wife had the fish and really enjoyed it too. Service was very friendly and English was very good, I try to speak a little German but they quickly moved to English. Highly recommend. read more

Took 20 minutes just to get beer. Very clear that the waitstaff is only interested in being pleasant to locals and German speakers. Generally, I know severs in Austria to be pretty hands off, but this gal was non-existent especially when attempting to get the check. She also brought the wrong entree, forgot a beer and then had the audacity to eyeball my friend that was paying and say "Tip?" Excellent food, service and atmosphere. After being turned away from another restaurant nearby that couldn't fit our group of seven, we were happily accommodated by cheerful staff. The ambiance is warm and pleasant and the decor is a mix of modern and traditional. We all ordered different dishes and everyone was very happy with their meal. This was right behind our hotel - Star Inn- and we ended up here because we were too tired to walk anywhere else. We had the best meal of our trip - service was excellent and food was absolutely wonderful.
