    Garlic cream soup

We stumbled into this place to escape the cold for a bit and are so glad we did. Our server was very friendly and we enjoyed chatting with him. The service and food were both great. I got the garlic cream soup, which I have never ordered anywhere before but it was amazing! Perfect for a cold day. We shared the veal schnitzel which was also very good and big enough to share. The environment here was warm and cozy. We came right at opening so it was quiet at first and then filled up throughout the day. You can tell it's a popular spot. If I'm ever back in Vienna I'd love to stop in again.

My family and I had a great dinner. This is a very nice and charming restaurant. The place itself is just great. The outdoor sitting area is very cozy as well. The service was wonderful and food was just great. We had a couple of drinks including a local beer, both the pork and veal schnitzel, the cheese spätzle, the pulled pork burger and the Kaiserschmarren (local dessert). I definitely recommend this place.

This was a random Yelp find, as we were wandering through the streets of Salzburg. Actually, the restaurant we had wanted to dine at was closed when we got there (even though they were supposed to be open), so Zirkelwirt was an on-the-fly find. The downstairs dining room was packed when we stepped in from the cold, but a waiter told us there was seating upstairs. "Upstairs" in this case meant traversing their very tight spiral staircase to get to a moderately-sized dining area on the second floor. We were given two seats at the end of a long table, sharing the space with a family of three. We placed beer orders after we sat down (predictable of us, I know); I got the König Ludwig Dunkel, and my husband got a Stiegl Goldbräu. For my main, I tried to order the Spaghetti Bolognese, but apparently they were all out by that time. Instead, I ordered the same thing as my husband: the Oven-fresh roast pork in Weissbier-Kümmelsaftl, with sauerkraut and homemade bread dumplings. To this we each added a small side salad. It took a bit of time for our food to arrive, but I know that they were busy, and the food had to make its way up from the first floor kitchen. It gave us a chance to sit back and enjoy our beer, while chatting about what we wanted to accomplish the next day (our last day in the city). Though the pork dish wasn't what I'd originally wanted, it was very good. The meat was flavorful, and the sauce didn't overpower the dish at all. I barely touched the bread dumplings, but the sauerkraut had a nice tang to it, that helped take a bit of an edge off the sheer meatiness of the dish. The salad was also particularly flavorful and filling - their small side salad was anything but! The dressing was light and flavorful, and the vegetables were fresh and crisp. I took a star off the rating just because our waitress was kind of rude. It wasn't like she was taking anything out on us - she seemed to have a chip on her shoulder and took it out on all her tables - but it went against everything we'd experienced in the city, as far as service goes, and took a bit away from an otherwise lovely evening.

The service was quite honestly worst that I've ever experienced, had to ask multiple times each to get simple things, such as some drinks, the menu, to order, to get a table, and the check. The outside was full, but we were sitting on the inside so maybe this made the difference. Food wise: We got the kaesespaetzle and Goulash, they were alright, but the Kaesespaetzle was too salty. Unfortunately the service and effort to get the food took about 1.5 hours even though it was a Monday night, so it was hard to enjoy.

Always 5 stars. Also to be noted, the host here is hilarious and amazing. Tried to get in with a group of 11 which was pretty much never going to happen, but he tried his best. Food is always excellent and the vibe is even better. I come back here every time I visit Salzburg!

This place was fantastic! We didn't have a reservation, but they were able to get us in pretty quick, even though they were packed. The waitress was nice and helpful. The food and atmosphere was so good. I recommend the spinach dumplings and the poppy dessert. We tried to go back the night before we left, but wasn't able to. If you don't go here, you're missing out!

First time trying goulash and I love it! The potato dumpling perfectly balanced the slightly salty goulash with beef. Definitely what I needed on a chilly day exploring Salzburg! My boyfriend got the spaghetti and it was very good as well. The place is incredibly cute. Kinda looks like a hole in the wall from the outside, but they have an downstairs and upstairs when you walk in. They are constantly busy so they won't be able to tell you the wait. But tables turnover fairly quick, so if there are no free tables, just wait a little and they will come up.

Interesting decor. Good food good beer

Spinach dumplings are great. I had the beef goulash with dumplings also very good. Great value. No air conditioning but that usually is not a problem

Came here for dinner and had to wait a very long time, but it was worth the wait. We sat upstairs (it was very hot up there!) and had very traditional austrian food that we thought was excellent. My wife got some meat, sauerkraut, and a potato ball. I got goulash with a potato ball. Would absolutely come back.

This is a 2 part review as we dined at Zirkelwirt for dinner one night and lunch the next day as part of Bob's Sound of Music tour. Zirkelwirt came up in our Rick Steves Tour Europe book so we decided to try this place one night. This place is a quick walk from Mozartplatz with some traditional dishes such as schnitzel and dumplings. There's a lot of options to choose from and we were recommended to try their dumplings and schnitzel. We tried the dumpling and the pork sandwich. The spinach dumplings were posted on the menu containing butter but we decided to try it without it which still made it tasty to eat. The pork sandwich was a little dry and was the equivalent to eating a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw with a kick (mentioend as wasabi coleslaw on the menu) with french fries. Overall, it was okay and would not mind coming back to this place; however, I would have preferred to try somewhere else if given the option. The next day we dined at Zirkelwirt for lunch but decided to try their schnitzel. We tried their pork and veal schnitzel this time followed by the apple strudel. The schnitzel was alright to me but apparently it's popular at this restaurant. It's a little dry but was still good as I described it as the equivalent to a chicken/pork parm without the marinara sauce on top of it. The strudel was okay as it seemed to be a little warm but not as fresh as we would have thought. Overall, this isn't a bad place to try and eat while in Salzburg. However, after dining here two days in a row, I would probably go and try somewhere else since I was able to try a few of their dishes in my two different dining experiences here.

We were at Konigssee (Germany) and drove to Salzburg for a quick Austrian dinner. We found Zwettler's through the help of yelp but they were so full and we didn't make reservation. It was already late so we were like whatever and just went down the block and picked zirkelwirt and i believe it's as good as Zwettler's Service was great the waitress gave us some good recommendations. We ordered roast pork, Viennese chicken and spinach dumplings. We were not a big fan of dumplings but if you are definitely get the spinach one. The only thing that I could complain was the waitress served us a basket of bread without telling us that we had to pay. Many restaurants serve customers complimentary bread before the entrees come so we kinda took it for granted. But it's only a few euros and tasted good so we just kept quiet.

Great location a couple blocks off the main tourist area, so noticeably quester and more relaxing than the main squares. Still in a pedestrian zone too, so no cars or other noise to distract you from a pleasant meal. We sat outside since the weather was nice, and their outdoor seating area was laid out across a couple levels and with planters to make it feel a little more private. The dumpling soup was a good starter, but the highlight of the meal was the Pinzgauer Kasnocken; cheesy spaetzle with onions and browned in a pan so it gets a little crunchy and a little chewy around the outside, while the middle stays buttery soft. Absolutely delicious!

Yelpers so…read morerecommended this place that we tried to go our first night in town, and were advised that it might be a 30 minute wait -- but the staff *also* told the 7 parties ahead of us that it might be a 30 minute wait for them, too. So we went elsewhere. We went back the next night at an off-hour and while the food was fine, I would have been highly disappointed had we waited in line for 30 minutes, let alone 2 or more hours. This restaurant has a prime location and a strong online reputation. And perhaps our experience was impacted by the fact that we went at an off-hour. Still, there are much better options, with equal character, available across the city. Consider branching out -- and check my other Salzburg reviews for other alternatives.

We came in around 5pm for an early dinner before our train back to Munich and was able to grab a table for 4. We got incredibly lucky because the restaurant really filled up and by the time we left, there was a long line down the block. Of course we had to have their Original Wiener Schnitzel, which was so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We also had a Salzburger Nockerl, which is a classic Austrian soufflé dessert that is considered a culinary symbol of Salzburg. You do have to order this about 20 minutes in advance, so we ordered it when we made our entree orders. This was really good and honestly, more than enough for our group of 4. I also highly recommend their house beer, which was one of the best beers I had during our 10 day trip.

We were sat at the opposite end of the table from another couple in a little room. The servers were plenty friendly and spoke good English to assist us. My husband got a burger and I ordered the Mac and cheese and a salad and we shared. It was a lot of food! We also ordered the pancake shredded dessert which came with a jelly type of sauce. Everything was good but it was sooo heavy. I certainly recommend sharing so that you have enough room in your stomach. We would return next time we were in Salzburg.

He recommended the Bärenwirt. Returning to Salzburg with our 11 adult children and grandchildren, we wanted them to have a similar authentic experience so we made a reservation at our old haunt, which has been in operations since 1663. Things have changed over the last 16 years. On our first visit, the menu was only in German and our server spoke to us in German until we threw in the towel and admitted, "Ich spreche nicht sehr gut Deutsch. Englisch, bitte?" (I don't speak German well. English, please?) Now, 16 years later, English has become the default and today, the menu is presented in four languages. But the food is still just as authentic and delicious. Taking grandkids who range from 10 to 15 years of age, we were bracing for a few refrains of, "I don't LIKE that! It's weird!" or similar rants, but we heard none of it. All the kids (and parents, too, for that matter) dove gamely into the menu and found things that were to their liking. The menu is large and varied. Main dishes include roast pork, pasta, sausage with roasted potatoes, dumplings, goulash, schnitzel, fried chicken, boiled beef and (of course) bratwurst. The food was good, there was an excellent variety, and it was brought out quickly. Prices for main dishes were quite reasonable, with most under €20. Wiener Schnitzel was the most expensive, at €28,90 but it was an outlier. The only issue I had was the price of the soft drinks. Between our grandkids, they had 10 Cokes - at €5.90 EACH. That was €59 for sodas; more than we paid for all of our beers. My wife was determined that, for dessert, the kids and grands would all taste Kaiserschmarren mit Zwetschkenröster - cut-up pancake with raisins topped with powdered sugar and served with a jam for dipping. A truly Austrian experience that everyone enjoyed, though some more than others. On the night we visited, we encountered several other parties of Americans. I have no way of knowing whether the place has become that popular with visitors or management simply corralled us into the same room. Regardless, it was a very pleasant evening and one I'm sure we will repeat the next time we're in Salzburg.
