Ambience -My son and I just happened to choose this restaurant by happenstance on our way to Cooperstown. What great luck! We sat at the bar to eat. Each chair has a name engraved on the bar in front of it. From this, I knew this would be a friendly place. This is a family owned and operated business. The dad greeted us warmly and manned the bar. The mom was the chef who made wonderful, homemade food like you'd expect from your grandma. Their son was helping out in kitchen. We met and chatted with them all. The food - yummy!! Local, fresh and made with love. I had meatloaf sandwich. Great taste. My fave was my son's BBQ pulled pork which was smoked for 12 hours behind the restaurant. The side of mac and cheese out of this world I had potato wedges topped with cheese, bacon and scallions. So good. Best part - I had rented a hotel that was 45 Min from Cooperstown. Oops. The dad and two other locals eating at bar helped me tremendously in finding new lodging. They gave me Many options. Turns out I rented a beautiful house on the owners' property up a small Hill. Humphreys is my favorite restaurant in Oneonta. I like the atmosphere and chatting with Don and Ronnie. I usually sit at the bar and eat something on one of the special menus. Tonight was a Polish night and I had a fantastic stuffed cabbage. I took Latkes and Blintzes home to share. And then there is the "Fresh Froze" menu. Extremely disappointing and subpar food. My family and I were looking for a decent place to grab dinner our last night of vacation on a Saturday night. This place was second choice after we were given a crappy time wait estimate by the manager at the Farmhouse up the road. Turns out, we probably should have just waited it out over coming to this place. The menu looked unique and decent enough here; there were mostly several burgers and sandwiches offered, but there were a handful of entrees that made some of our heads turns. Although, we should have been tipped off that things were going to go downhill when we walked in at 7:30 and there were zero other patrons in the restaurant... The establishment seemed well kept, but small. The exterior resembled an old Burger King from the 90's with arching windows as the front. Inside, there was a nice, wooden bar to sit at for those interested in grabbing a cocktail. In fact, it probably took up half of the restaurant. The way this place was set up, they could have fit maybe 15 people at the tables they had. Booths lined the front windows of the restaurant, but were unusually high off the ground; being a semi-short person, only the tips off my toes could touch the floor, yet I had to hunch over the table to eat my food. It was a bit awkward. After the waitress poured her heart out telling us how great the food is, we were sold. She did a great job trying to get us enthusiastic about their food and how it was made. Apparently, the macaroni and cheese is made with 11 pounds of cheese and the chicken tikka masala is created from house raised chickens and freshly grown spices of the owner. The reason for the various cuisines (Mexican, Indian, Italian, etc) is because the owner had mastered each one of the dishes present on the menu. This gave me a spark of interest: having been looking for good Indian food to fill the void of moving away from the great food in Albany, I was intent on trying this homemade masala. Where to begin. Well, the flavor of the curry was appropriate but everything else killed the dish: the chicken was shredded which resulted in the sauce being completed absorbed by the semi dry chicken, there was zero spice which every Indian dish should possess (even if just a little), the rice it was served over seemed more like risotto rice where it not only was undercooked, but had a gross olive oil flavor which did not go at all with masala. Oh, they also had no naan. How do you serve Indian without naan?? It's a staple! It's like serving sauce without pasta! Instead, I received peasant bread: dry and grainy. My dish was also quite cold. It seemed as though most of the dishes we received were popped in the microwave with how inconsistent the temperature of the dish was. We all ordered a side to share of their "amazing" Mac and Cheese. After the waitress built it up so much, I had high expectations. It was bland. It was creamy and the pasta was cooked well, but it needed salt. And even that couldn't save it. Very sad. My family was equally unimpressed by the flavors and quality of everything. My mom and sister-in-law both ordered the Chicken Athena which was stuffed with spinach and a bunch of cheeses served over rice. There was a very off-putting flavor that did not mingle well, they think saffron, not to mention their rice was also undercooked. It was not good to say the least. The waitress was very kind and accommodating, which was the only thing saving this place from a worse review. She made sure we had everything we wanted and even helped by giving us suggestions. Overall, I would never come back. I'm not sure if this place is meant to be visited more for their lunch items, but everything we had was eh. We all left disappointed. There wasn't one thing I thought was worth what we paid for and we spent a decent amount! I suppose if the go was good, the prices wouldn't have been awful, but spending so much on OK food was irritating. My son wanted barbecue ribs for his birthday with drinks and a restaurant I had tried in the past did not have Monday hours, so we gave Humphrey's a go. So glad we did! As always, I'll do my list of pros and cons, but you'll find only one con ... hence, 4 stars. Really impressed though! Just loved being here and completely jealous we have nothing like it in my area ... especially that offers delivered take away! Pros: 1.) The owner! We didn't need a reservation for a party of 6 on a Monday evening and he was so very polite to us all. He even gave the little one in our party, our five year old, two decks of endangered wildlife cards. Kept her busy the entire time! He was always on hand, but never intrusive. .2.) Our server. Attentive, friendly ... suggested her favorites and was she spot on about the drink choice ... Cos-mutt-politan. I need this recipe. Most delicious drink I've had in a restaurant to date! (I got the mango flavor ... perfect balance of sweet and acidity plus you really couldn't taste the alcohol!) Every drink order (from beer to a White Russian were a hit) 3.) Small, but a fully stocked bar. You would think from the website it was just beer or wine, but they have everything you could want. 4.) Comfortable setting, but TOP NOTCH food. We all had something different ... from eggplant rollatini to barbecue ribs (my son loved these, said they were fantastic) to the turkey club with real cheddar cheese slices (not imitation slices ... big plus for this). My daughter even ordered a special vegan order and they had no problem accommodating her even though the menu doesn't have a true vegan option. Portions were terrific without being too much, but those appetizers ... amazing. Hand breaded fried mozzarella squares they make themselves with a delicious, perfectly seasoned red sauce. My son was floored by the chicken quesadillas and the side sauce (another recipe I'd love to have!) Really, it was a great time in a little place and I'm glad we accidentally found our way here because we'll definitely be back. The ONLY con (and I hate saying it, but it's the one tweak that needs to happen) was seasoning. The mac'n cheese needed salt as did a couple of the other dishes. My family cooks like chefs (put the little bit of salt in the recipe and keep the salt shaker off the table. Taste before serving to be sure. I know some restaurants worry about adding salt to certain dishes, but it was the only thing missing from a couple of the dishes. Mac'n cheese would have been the best I had out if not for that ... but the five year old (a budding chef) just cracked some fresh sea salt on top and ate kept on eating. Very good local bistro. Bistro twists on comfort food. Small, intimate setting. Service was good. Food was a little slow. Buffalo chicken dip was amazing. Decadent and rich but with a lot of flavor punch. Humphreys makes their own tortilla chips so were fresh and hot. For entree, had the meatloaf sandwich with Mac & Cheese. Meatloaf was good but a bjlit on the lukewarm side. In-house bread was very good, toasted perfectly. Mac and Cheese was very good with crunchy panko topping. Wedge fries were good, fresh made. All in all a good meal and will visit again. Only complaint was being charged for refills on my soda, and after my bill was already presented to me. First of all, our establishment is not dirty and I take offense at your rude comment. Secondly, our rice- like everything else we prepare is made from scratch- no boil in a bag. Everything I prepare is made fresh and if you had a problem with the amount of asparagus you received, or the texture of my broccoli- maybe Taco Bell or Burger King would be more suitable to your taste.. We work hard at Humphrey's, to bring honest and good food to the table. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. We stopped for a quick meal that turned into a dining experience with new friends. My wife had the beyond burger which she enjoyed. I was jonesing for meatloaf a couple days before we stopped here and they had a meatloaf sandwich on the menu!!! I ordered it with gravy and fries with the same gravy. The meatloaf was flavorful and juicy. Fries with gravy are a must. Dessert was homemade flan and upside down pineapple cake. Each tasted like they were made with love. Didn't know what to expect. Passed by on a whim while visiting colleges. Walked in and didn't expect a bar but the two gentlemen working were friendly enough and even offered to change the music but I happen to like 70's easy listening. The place is dog themed. There are salt and pepper pups on the tables and the drink menu revolves around dog breeds. Surprisingly enough, the food was quite tasty. I got the BBQ burger, served with potato chips and a pickle. Oven baked fries would've cost $2 more. I thought it was a little pricey but what the heck. My daughter liked her pricey baked macaroni and cheese but she LOVED the mashed potatoes!!! It's going to be interesting to see where this one ends up. I want to give it a 1, because I am appalled that in this day and age, this type of food can pass for good -- anywhere. Here we go. Food: What we ordered is as follows...Chicken Athena (2), St Louis Ribs, Chicken Tikka (2), Mac + Cheese (2), Spinach, and Cous Cous. That about rounds it out. All of it, ALL OF IT...tasted as if it was made previous to us sitting down, and reheated in the microwave. Maybe the oven...but most likely the microwave. If I wanted an eff'ing Lean Cuisine, or a Frozen Hungry Man entree, I would have gone down the street to Price Chopper, walked to the frozen section, and spent $5. Instead, I went to a well-reviewed restaurant that boasted a farm-to-table experience with farm-raised chickens and homegrown herbs, spent $50, and walked away pissed. There is NO WAY that this was cooked fresh to order. From the seemingly reheated rice that was underdone (and tasted weird -- in a 'make me vomit' way), to the texture of all the meats that seemed a little too chewy to be freshly made, to the molten hot plate that the mac and cheese was on (a sure indicator that something was microwaved), to the cold-in-the-middle spinach, the only thing that the 'chef' showed me, is that he knows how to push buttons on a microwave -- and not very well at that, because nothing was hot. Let's get down to the flavor. The Tikka Masala was good, but I could have gotten that flavor and freshness from an ethnic frozen entree for 1/10th the price. The Ribs were good, and the BBQ was good. Highlight of the meal, for sure; but even that tasted reheated. The chicken Athena was bland/under-seasoned, and did not even remotely live up to the lofty description on the menu. The rice in every meal was under-cooked and had a bad flavor. How do you screw up rice!? Oh yea, not microwaving it long enough. Wrong button 'Master Chef'. Ah, you know what, I bet the 'chef' forgot that when you have multiple items going into a microwave, that you have to increase the cooking time. Guess he didn't pass Microwave 101 when he went to cooking school on YouTube. My guess is that someone precooks the meals for this 'chef', either in the morning -- or days earlier, and they just reheat for dinner service. If this isn't true, the food tasted like it... AND THAT'S WORSE. Eff-it...this food doesn't deserve more than a... 2 / 5 (and that is generous -- no basmati rice or naan for the masala ... come on!) Service: Honestly, at first, I thought the server was extreme bubbly, passionate about the restaurant, and was very knowledgeable about the menu. Now, in retrospect, I see her as diluted, uneducated in her industry, and ignorant to the fact that this food shouldn't pass for 'good' anywhere...let alone 'OK'. For all her positive personality attributes, I now feel like she was like a wolf in sheep's clothing. Like a trained sales manager assassin -- one you'd find in a used car dealership. ...wheelin' and dealin' the first horse crap story that comes to mind about a sub par product to try and trick diners into thinking this is good food. Service: 2 / 5 Atmosphere: Clean, but had the feeling of a man-cave...and not in a good way. Though, maybe the reason for the cleanliness is the fact that nobody else was in the restaurant when we arrived, or when we left. It's easy to keep a restaurant clean when there are no customers. Atmosphere: 2 / 5 Price: For what we paid, this was highway robbery. As mentioned, I would have been happier going to Price Chopper and paying 3 for $5 on Hungry Man then eating here. Same quality, 1/10th the price. Price: -1/5 (yep, that's a negative number) Final Thoughts: If I could go back in time, the first thing I would do is make it so that I never met my first girlfriend. The second thing I would change? Choosing to eat at Humphrey's. This was, by far, one of the most disappointing experiences I have had in years. My fiancee and I decided to check Humphrey's out on a dreary Friday night. We were hungry and didn't really know what to expect. Initially, our decision to go to this restaurant was based on the fact that it was the closest establishment to our house. However, after trying this place out, we feel compelled to share a couple reasons why we will be coming back to this restaurant. 1) The food: My fiancee and I decided to go with the eggplant rollatini while I elected to try the St. Louis BBQ ribs. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, with the ribs having a delectable BBQ sauce and the rollatini being excellently seasoned. The portions were very generous--especially considering the price of the entrees. 2) The drinks: It should be noted that the first thing that caught my eye hear was the drink menu. My fiancee was intrigued by the pomegranate margarita and I got a whiskey sour. The drinks were prepared masterfully and the bartenders did not skimp out on the alcohol. 3) The service: We came here when the restaurant was packed, and as I understand it, there are only four staff members working at any given time. Despite the fact that the restaurant was extremely busy, we received our food promptly and our waitress was very courteous and professional. 4) The price: Considering what my fiancee and I ordered: two drinks/two entrees, the bill was quite manageable. What looked like an average joe diner turned out to be one of the best dining experiences of my life. With the jovial presence of the owner by our side, we happily devoured the most delicious BBQ burgers of all time. A giant slab of meat, cooked to perfection, atop a lightly toasted humongous bun that we struggled to fit into our mouths. Not to mention the generous helping of bacon, tomato, bleu cheese, carmelized onions, and barbecue sauce. The service was exceptional - always willing to please and very flexible. I just moved to oneonta and wanted to try some local places, this one was a mistake. I ordered delivery and it took over two hours to get to me when I was told it would take 30 minutes. I called the store to ask if it was coming, the girl that answered the phone sounds like a teenager that hates her job. Very snobby. I had explained to her how long I was waiting and told her I was concerned about my food being cold. She assured me it would be fine. The woman called me back an hour later scolding me Bc the delivery driver was trying to call me. It turns out they dialed the wrong area code. But thanks to the girl who made it my fault. The food finally came and the driver was super nice. She was the only positive thing about this experience. Now. The food. SOOO BADDDD. the buffalo dip was all OIL. GROSS. I'll include a picture. Small place, BOLD flavors. This little gem is awesome. Came in with a group of 5 and every dish ordered was DELICIOUS. I had the chicken club which was probably the best sandwich I've ever tasted. Jan 16, 2016 Ordered from Humphrey's Big Burger which comes with coleslaw and chips. Also ordered ultimate wedges and a drink. Ordered the burger Medium Well, but it came well done and a bit burnt. There was no coleslaw or chips as mentioned in the meal. Wedges were good. A bit disappointing for a an order costing over $30. Apr 12, 2015 Per a request I went to check out Humphrey's. My first impressions are that it feels more like a bar than a restaurant. The first thing you see is the long bar, with around 5 tables behind it sort of tucked away. I can't knock a restaurant for its setup as I know building and construction isn't cheap, but that is the feeling I got walking in. It was a bit loud, but one would expect that from such a small place and it had some families dining. The BBQ Burger was good, the bread seemed to throw me off though. It didn't seem like the average brioche style and didn't mesh well with the cheese (for me). But overall I enjoyed it. There was a chicken salad as well but I missed pictures of that. It had to be remade because of a mix up, but that happens. There was still some bleu cheese left in it when it came back. Overall was a good experience but will definitely choose a table next time, felt a bit like eating at a bar staring at bottles of liquor lol. Have you ever had a birthday completely ruined? Well I have and it's all because of Humphrey's. If there was an option to give this garbage establishment zero stars I would. Not only did they deliver my order an hour and a half late, they also screwed it up royally. Two sides were completely missing, and a condiment was left on a sandwich which I explicitly told them needed to be left off. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING was burned. Up until tonight I didn't think a chef would allow the meals my friends and I had to leave a kitchen. Tonight Humphrey's lost six customers. I would never, ever recommend this establishment and I promise you there are too many good restaurants in Oneonta to waste your time on this shithole. read more
