It must have been a bad day at the Hunam. Ordered Shrimp Egg Fu Yung from Uber Eats delivery. As soon as I took my first bite I noticed that the shrimp were small and dry. There was also no seasoning, no salt, no white pepper, no onion or garlic, nothing. Bland as hell. And the gravy also lacked flavor, just brown gravy with no seasoning at all. I finally added some 5-spice powder to the gravy, which improved it immensely. But I should not have to do that. It's the chef's job. It made me angry for a couple of reasons, 1) that the chef thought so little of their customers that they didn't think we would notice if the food was tasteless, and 2) that for there own sake, they thought that they felt it was acceptable to serve subpar food to the customer. read more

Brought a friend here to try the lunch special as I had been once before a long time ago. I ordered the shrimp egg foo young and was delish. It was cooked firm and full of veggies and not overloaded with onions or oil. The gravy was smooth and flavorful. I really enjoyed this today. Really great Chinese restaurant! I ordered takeout from here, and it was ready in about 20 mins. I ordered the combo meal with orange chicken and white rice (and it came with wonton soup), eggplant with garlic sauce, steamed veggies with tofu, mongolian beef, and crab rangoons. The entrees come with white rice. They load up the portions of the eggplant, chicken, and beef, and they were all so flavorful! Not too watery like what other people said. My favorite was the eggplant though, such a classic! I would definitely come here again to try some of their more authentic stuff because it was really good! read more

I recently moved here to chapel hill been looking for a very good Chinese place, let me tell you this place IS DELICIOUS! Like damn. And the portions of the food were big I didn't finish all of it. I chose the egg drop soup and delicious and my boyfriend the egg roll he loved it. I would HIGHLY recommend it. Either takeout or dinning in. A small local Chinese restaurant in Chapel hill that I only heard of through a friend. Great Cantonese style cooking. Not incredibly busy or fancy decorations but sufficiently clean and acceptable dining experience. I'd rate it lower in terms of dining experience due to the ambiance if the food wasn't good but I think for Cantonese food in this area this may be one of the best. The boss is very friendly and the staff told us about the fresh vegetables and ingredients they had for the day. We were able to order dishes off the menu and they were delicious. Since moving to Durham I haven't been here in probably twenty years. We come to Chapel Hill a lot, but just forget about Hunam. Today, we remembered. Don't be deterred by the outside. If they'd get a new awning it would look just fine. The inside is bright and clean. Some of the staff is friendly and some seem as though they're new or just don't know the menu. I had the shrimp chop suey prepared chow mein style. I wasn't sure what that meant and when I asked the waitress she didn't know. She went back to the kitchen and looked very confused. She said it came with noodles & rice. Turns out it was noodles, but they gave me rice. That's ok. It was very good and enough to bring home for leftovers. My spouse had the shrimp and broccoli, which she enjoyed and also had enough to bring home for another meal. Neither of us cared for the soup, hot and sour was too much vinegar and the egg drop was just too thick. We would like to come back another time and explore more of the menu. read more

I was weary coming here because of the poor reviews, but it's actually quite decent! You can get authentic Chinese food here, it's also not spicy because of the region of China that the owner is from. The coconut shrimp was really good, big and juicy pieces. If you're a fan of duck - I recommend ordering it! The skin is crispy and the meat is juicy, also full of good flavor. We also tried the seafood noodles, which come with many veggies and it sits on a bed of crunchy noodles that soften with the sauce that the dish is cooked in. While this place looks like a meth den on the outside, it also smells like one inside. The food is unremarkably below average and seems to be getting worse over the three times I've been here. I ordered the brown toilet water with seven pieces of over-boiled gristle (not what it's called on the menu). On the bright side, they served a relatively cold can of coca-cola and the server was friendly. Seriously, these people cannot be trying their best. HCR is our favorite restaurant in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. We had lunch there today, and it was a total delight. My wife had sweet and sour shrimp which she declared to be her favorite meal. But, mine was better -- I had shrimp in curry sauce. We both had an egg roll and shared a pot of hot tea. The price was $25 + tip. We have had many enjoyable meals there, beginning in the mid-1970s. Always found the restaurant clean and well-maintained. The staff are friendly and courteous. Good deal for us, as we live close enough to get home delivery. read more

This place isn't too bad considering it's Chapel Hill and I'm grading on a curve. I had the black bean paste chicken and vegetable lo mein both which were pretty good. The sauce was good though could have been a little spicier and the vegetables were fresh and not cooked within an inch of their life which I appreciated. I did not like the mix of dark and white meat chicken and would have preferred white meat but I ate around the dark pieces. I would probably only order tofu or vegetables here next time though to avoid this. The lo mein wasn't too greasy and had the same fresh crisp vegetables making it one of the better versions I've tried around here. Portions and prices are good, better than a lot of other places. Worst Chinese food I've ever had. My family ordered chicken and broccoli, there was no sauce on it.... we got fried rice, and it looks like just plain brown rice. The broccoli is crunchy and takes forever to chew. Did they accidentally give us someone else's order (diet option), is this genuinely what they serve people? People who turn away because of the restaurant's looks might not know how to recognize a proper hole in the wall, authentic chinese restaurant! The americanized chinese food here is fine too but ask for the black color menu. The restaurant is simple looking, nothing special, but the food is AMAZING. The pork and squid are perfectly flavored and the crispy tofu just melted in my mouth. On my recent trip back to Charlotte... Yes, we drove 2 hours up north to check it out. Word in the restaurant business was that there was an authentic chef that recently set up shop in Chapel Hill at this restaurant. So my parents convinced me (of course not me driving) to come up and scope this place out to make sure it wasn't some rumor. And the verdict: it isn't. Now, saying that I'm sure you wonder: why such a low score then? I'll be sure to answer that burning question. Out of all the restaurants out there I'm absolutely positive that Chinese restaurants have the hardest time with keeping up with the right taste that will be liked and be competitive along other restaurants. I mean look at the history of Chinese food and I'm sure you question yourself, why is it so cheap? "Hey! So if you're saying its so good, why the low/mediocre score?" That's because people are not ordering the correct dishes. So, what should you order? Well, here's what I ordered: 1. Stir Fried Cantonese Style Lobster with scallion and ginger. 2. Beef Stew Hot Pot 3. Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice 4. Eggplant with Salty fish chicken Hot Pot (I believe we added more from just the Eggplant Hot Pot) 5. Stir Fried Garlic Chinese Broccoli 6. Stir Fried Garlic Shanghai Cabbage (usually mistaken for baby bok choy) 7. Salt and Pepper Pork Chops If you truly want Chinese. Try these dishes out. Ask for the Chinese menu and order off of there. What did I think? I thought all the dishes were great. None of the dishes had any MSG, which is amazing. The only small thing that stood out to me was that the salt and pepper pork chops weren't spicy. That dish calls for some heat, and without that it lacked the fun and exciting factor for me. Still all in all, I hope people in Chapel Hill/Triangle area appreciate what they have... Because, honestly I thought it was worth the 2 hour trip. We have been going to Hunam for the past five years and it is slowly getting recognized for having the excellent food that it does (it was voted in the Top 100 Chinese Restaurants in the US). The sign and outside appearance look like any one of the generic Americanized Chinese around here, but ignore that and go in! On Sunday's this is the only place in Chapel Hill that has dim sum, which is cool, but the real kicker here is that they make their dim sum in house - delicious! This also means that if you are vegetarian/vegan they have a solid number of dishes for you. One thing to note is that it does not come around on a cart - you order form the menu and if you come at a busy time (Chinese New Year) it may be a wait (again with the "hand-made"). They also have one of the rare Chinese menus to order form and the dishes are delicious and authentic. read more

We ordered off the Chinese menu not American and had 6 dishes(fish maw soup, beef chow fun, salted fish fried rice, salt and pepper squid, fried fish in sweet and sour eggplant hot pot). Hunam is underrated. To the casual observer, it's just a neighborhood Chinese restaurant, but to me - it's the place I crawled to for warmth and sustenance during the big ice storm of 2002-2003, the place where my now-husband and I went to celebrate our engagement...well, you get the picture. Hunam has a lengthy menu - a lot of the usual favorites (the best hot and sour soup around, in my opinion), as well as some more unique offerings, like their excellent chow fun. They also have generous lunch special combos for a reasonable price. Another great thing about Hunam is that it's one of the few places in this area where you can get Sunday dim sum. It's not served from carts, but from a menu, so if you like the fun of pointing and ordering from the carts, then you may miss that aspect of the meal. Still, the food arrives at your table fresh and delicious - I recommend the pork dumplings and the fried taro. read more

Two of my friends and I opted for takeout from Hunam, and the food was subpar at best. The chicken with garlic sauce I ordered was dry and essentially flavorless, without even the typical MSG and soy sauce and corn starch flavor that I've come to expect from Westernized Chinese restaurants. I was surprised because the restaurant seems to be owned by legitimate Chinese people; I think there's an authentic Chinese food menu somewhere that we failed to try. The second time I ordered takeout from Hunam, I asked for a Sichuan chicken combination and received a General Tso's chicken instead. The crab rangoons I also ordered were too dry, with the filling being almost solid, and I also received an extra container of fried rice for some reason. The next day, I had the worst and most painful food poisoning I've ever experienced. I'd be wary of Hunam. read more
