Tried this place for first time tonight. Very impressed with the menu diversity. We had crab Rangoon, Singapore noodles and Szechuan beef. Portion size was outstanding, probably two meals for us. Prices moderate to slightly high depending on the option. Only issue I had was both our dishes were very salty. Maybe we just haven't had authentic Szechuan for a while, but it was very salty, especially the Szechuan beef. My taste buds were numbed and it wasn't spice. Solid authentic Sichuan-style Chinese food, plus American-style Chinese and a couple of Thai dishes. Scallion pancakes were light and crispy, except for the ones on the bottom that got saturated because the lid came off the sauce. Zhong Shui dumplings were fat and juicy, but the sauce was weak. The Chongquing style chicken was tasty, but not as spicy as other versions I've tried, same with the shredded potatoes, needed more chiles. The winner for me was the clear noodles in chili oil, just a great comfort-style dish that I would drive back down for any day of the week. I ordered the Seafood Bisque but I think they brought me Eggdrop Soup instead. There was no seafood or cream! It was chicken broth and egg, but they swore it was the bisque! It was okay, but they still charged me for the bisque, $16. Too much for chicken soup! Extremely slow service, too. I love szechuan village! They have a very wide selection of dishes, and each dish delivers on flavor! I have not been underwhelmed by the taste of any of the dishes I've ordered. The service is very attentive, warm and cordial. The ambiance is neat and tidy! I would recommend the green beans, dry pot beef, beef and onions, and boiled fish (tastes better than it sounds). They cosplay as a more upscale alternative to a strip mall Chinese restaurant, but you'd get better food for less money by going to an actual strip mall Chinese restaurant (e.g. Panda Garden in Cole Park Plaza). The take-out bag was pretty, but the food was at best bland. Even the crispy wonton crunchies were like cardboard! (How do you screw up wonton strips? Answer: completely omit salt.) The tofu and vegetables were just... okay. My sister claimed that her dandan noodles were "inedible." She is an extremely picky eater and not to be trusted on such matters, so I had to taste them for myself. It turns out, she was right! They tasted awful and had an unpleasant texture, so we threw them out. Never going back to this place. read more

I have been searching for a good Asian restaurant since moving here from Chicago 10 years ago. Szechuan Village is amazing! You must try the Shrimp Kung Pao and the stir fried cauliflower in dry pot. They are both superb! The ambience and service is lacking though. read more

Hidden gem in Chapel Hill for Szechuan cuisine I stopped by this restaurant for dinner and had a wonderful experience. The staff was kind and attentive, even though it was a busy night. I was given a complimentary side of fried peanuts, which were delicious. I tried the egg drop soup, which was also very good. For my main course, I ordered the chongqing chicken, which blew me away. The flavors were bold and delicious. I loved every bite. The meal also came with a side of white rice. Overall, the food was amazing. Saw an article on wechat about the newly opened restaurant in Chapel Hill - it's like an hour drive but we are glad we made it. Appetizer - tripe and beef - pretty good. I think the spicy seasoning are in place. Could use a bit of mellowing agent to make it smoother taste. But flavor us pretty authentic. Appetizer - fried dumpling - my 9 year old son ate it all and wanted seconds. Assuming it is pretty good. Ma po tofu - i"d gave 5 star. The texture of tofu was perfectly tender and flavored with mellow spices but with good punch to it. Green beans - 5 star as well. Flavored very and best part is cooked so perfectly that's it's crunchy with sweetness. Cumin lamb - very good as well. Wish more lamb in it. Lol. They also have milk tea and other drinks - I had passion fruit green tea - Love it - not overly sweet and definitely balance out the spices in the dishes. The drinks at 30% off now. Agree with previous post - price is definitely higher than comparable places but the portion is decent as well. Will come back again even with the long drive. read more

I go often and really enjoy the food and service. They are so nice and attentive. The food is very good. I'm always leery of Chinese restaurant's food quality. I think it's rare to find something better than average. So far I've had Szechuan Chicken, Sesame Chicken, Fried Rice, Beef w/Cumin, Egg Rolls, Orange Beef. Some of these I've had a few times. They are very accommodating with requested additions/changes and with spicing. I recommend them for sure. read more

Best Asian food we have found in Chapel Hill since moving here from Asheville. We love, love, love this place! Reminds us of Red Ginger and Mizu back in WNC. This place has a wide variety of food, decent pricing, and is delicious. I will say the only critique is the sesame chicken was a bit on the sweeter side. We have ordered take out at least twice in the past and thought the food was pretty good. We love to get sesame chicken and chicken lo mein. So I ordered the same thing this time. 2 orders of sesame chicken and a large order of plain lo mein and chicken lo mein. I was at the restaurant when the to go order came out of the kitchen. My total was $90. Got home and opened the sesame chicken, took a bite and it was like mush, had no chicken consistency. So tried another piece, same thing. At the same time I see my husband spit out his first bite. He says, it's like all breading! So I decided to cut the pieces open to see what was going on. On the inside it looked like all breading and the smallest bit of chicken. Some of them I couldn't find any chicken in. I was so disappointed because you know how it is when you have a taste for sesame chicken and you send so much money, drivers to go pick it up and then get home to pure disappointment! At this point our dinner was completely inedible. I wanted to drive it back up to the restaurant but decided to call first. The woman that answered sounded like she had never heard this before, she tired to tell me the chicken they use is very tender. I explained that there was no chicken in some of these pieces. She asked me to email them the pictures and said she would discuss with the chef and refund me for the 2 orders of sesame chicken. So I did and they did submit a refund, which I appreciated it but was still left in disappointment and the craving was not fulfilled. Needless to say I will never be going back. read more

Great authentic Szechuan cuisine. I ordered takeout from this place, and wow, the presentation and packaging was good quality! I know presentation isn't everything, but it's one of the only Asian restaurants I've seen in NC that actually put effort into their delivery/takeout packaging. It includes a small paper container that holds napkins, chopsticks, and other utensils with their name and logo on it. The container of the food was also sturdy and large! I ordered the dry hot pot beef and it was amazing! They gave a large portion of beef and the container was HEAVY. A lot of food and so worth the price. The addition of the cauliflower, lotus roots, and other veggies inside were a great touch. So spicy and filled with flavor! This place is definitely an authentic Sichuan restaurant. Some of the appetizers were so spicy that we had to eat lots of rice. With the peppercorns, I was still feeling the numbing effects after the meal. The waitress who served us was awesome and accommodating. She even offered to remake one of the dishes to be less spicy for us! I would be wary of the spice levels, and ask them to reduce spice if you can't handle too much spice, but there was something exciting about trying the dishes as the chef had intended as well! read more

Best selection of Szechuan menu items I've found in the Triangle area - I especially like their dry pots with real Szechuan peppercorns; eggplant with ground pork was good, too. They have a scattering of other Asian options, if you want Thai, Hunan, or Peking cuisine. Service was quick and friendly, though our server had a cold which we came down with 2 days later. Decor was traditional Chinese restaurant style. I could do without the folks clearing tables bringing a rolling cart into the dining area and shoveling all the dishes, glasses, etc. into plastic bins - I appreciate that it's efficient, and they weren't noisy, but feels less respectful of the diners than hand-carrying the dishes back to the kitchen. read more

The food at Szechuan Village has a great variety and I have yet to have a bad meal there. I typically get more uncommon meals there like the roast duck, braised pork belly, and black pudding beef and tripe and always find something interesting and tasty. Could have been much better. The online ordering went OK. I did not receive notification when the food was ready. I showed up at the time it was supposed to be ready and found it in a bag on the bar with other take out orders. So far so good. I got home and found a note inside the bag saying they were out of brown rice and substituted fried rice. Hmmm. I do not eat fried rice. They should have notified me, asked me perhaps. I called to ask them to refund the extra $ I paid for the brown rice. They did they could not do it immediately because of the 3rd party service they use for online ordering. As of now (next day) I have no indication that I have received a refund. The tofu and vegetable soup was bland. The vegetables were overcooked. The stick was essentially flavorless. The family style tofu lacked vegetables. The sauce was mostly oil and again, lacked any real flavor beyond some salt. There was plenty of tofu, but that was pretty much it. And without rice, it was a box of oily protein. I tried to complain through the ordering website but received no reply. So the food ended up in the compost and I threw $35 into the wastebin. Best Chinese option in Chatham county! Cucumber w/spicy chili sauce is a great starter (there are peanuts if allergic), then I always love a mapo tofu which they do a great job at. And I'm not a vegetarian. If you have a group to feed try the ma la spicy hot chili pot if you like some heat.
