Pretty darned good for a lunch buffet. Only two steam tables so there isn't a lot of variety but what they do have was pretty good. I did well, avoiding the battered and fried, getting mostly protein and avoiding the sauces. There's even a wifi nearby. Service was excellent and the price was right. $18 with tip for lunch? My husband I decided to grab a late dinner out this evening. Chinese sounded good, so we decided to go to our "usual" spot, Hunan Garden. We normally go through the drive through, but we decided to mix it up and go in for the buffet. It was 7:30, and their buffet closed at 8. We went in and had a seat, per the sign at the door. We were completely ignored by the employees. And yes, they saw us. The woman who I believe to be the owner was out in the dining room, wiping down empty tables, and checking on one of two other tables with guests. She was very obviously ignoring us. This is not the first time we've encountered rude behavior from her. We left, as it was obvious we were not going to be served. We like the food at Hunan, and it's a convenient stop on our way home, but we will not be going back for a very long time. read more

Medium-sized selection for the buffet and a bit devious with pricing. You see the lunch price for the buffet online, but it's $12.49 for the dinner. The waitress did not tell us the price when we walked in and the cashier is tucked away at the back where you can't immediately see the prices. Imagine my surprise when we went to check out. All chicken bits were over cooked except for the plain breaded chicken bits. Almost as if they reheat left over chicken and coat it in different sauces for serving later. Really really chewy. If you want a cheap meal, this might be an option but...I have to say, the buffet is sub par! For a person that enjoys eating a buffet for the variety, this one lacks variety! Every meat dish is a chicken dish....WHY!? There is one shrimp dish and then peel and eat shrimp, but not beef or pork? Seriously a disappointment! This restaurant is average Chinese fair. Not a lot of selections on the buffet. They seem to have their own take on dishes you normally find on a Chinese buffet. Chicken and mushrooms include cauliflower which seems a strange addition. General Tso's chicken is kinda sweet but no spice what-so-ever. Crab rangoons are nothing special. They have fired chicken pieces on the buffet so you can create cashew chicken, just add the cashews and green onion. Or you can add sweet and sour sauce instead. Then pile it on to one of three kinds of rice. That seems like too many rice dishes. I would've used some of that allocated space for some signature dish. Egg rolls are on the buffet. Nothing special though. I don't know if they hand make these or if they are frozen fare. There is also a beef and potato dish I believe. There is a small salad bar portion and also a small desert section. Nothing memorable there though. I'd like to point out that the ice cream is self-serve. Scoop it out yourself. I find that questionable and a little disgusting. I don't want countless people putting there dirty hands in my desert. The restaurant doesn't have a lot of seating. They have a drive thru for take out orders which is nice. I don't find anything here that would draw me back or encourage me to recommend this restaurant. But if you do decide to dine here I don't think it would be a complete bust. read more

The food is above average. Typical Midwestern Chinese Buffet. Everytime I am in town visiting the Family we go here at least once before I leave if not twice. The reason I wirte this is because This place has the BEST hot and Sour soup, and Crab Rangoons, I HAVE EVER EATEN!! I have been living in LA for years now and have yet to find a comparison. I ate here a few days ago and I had the Sesame chicken and it was delicious, the peel and eat shrimp was fresh and ice cold, the crab rangoons were hot and crispy and the sweet and sour soup was very tasty. All in all the service was great our waitress was very friendly and hard working cleaning tables and clearing dishes the whole time I ate. The place is a little wore out but it was a clean restaurant. I would definitely eat here again read more

The buffet food basically all tastes the same. My wife and I ate there for lunch recently and she had diarrhea for the entire day afterwards. I only ate a little bit of chicken and pork because I know better than to eat from a buffet like Hunan Garden. Of course the meat was totally dry and chewy. We apparently got lucky when we ate here yesterday because they had spring rolls on the buffet and were told they put them out "accidentally". They were SO GOOD, we both ate 6 and our 3 year old ate 3! Otherwise, this is very common place chinese for Joplin. VERY fair priced! Peel-and-eat shrimp was good, the "homemade" cocktail sauce was not. They over breaded the fried shrimp, while the same fried breaded chicken was awesome! All white meat and our son ate 3 whole pieces. The noodles were good, the green beans could've used more garlic, but were tender and easy to eat. The teriyaki chicken was over cooked, but good sauce. They had beef and broccoli, very tender, cooked perfect. Small salad bar with desserts and it is a self-serve ice cream, which we did not eat because of the possible contamination factor. Ice tea was just regular. Our son, got stuck with orange soda pop, which he did not drink as he doesn't like pop, so we switched him to ice water. Small dining area. Buffet replenished often! Limited food choices. Waitress was super friendly! Nicely priced. Nothing special, but compared to other places we've been, we would be more likely to go back here. read more

This would never be my top pick for dinner out. But for Chinese takeaway it quite possibly would be. While I love a different local "takeout only" place as much as anyone (and prefer it slightly) I do find the menu at Hunan Garden is larger and quite a lot cheaper. They also have a drive thru, which is handy for some. Tonight was my first ever visit to Hunan Garden though and my husband and I decided to just get the buffet, which is rare for us. It was pretty typical but on the better side of that. I liked the egg drop soup a lot and their stir fry vegetables had some life left in them even after being under the hot lights. All of the sauces were flavorful and hot, tasty rice noodles were on the buffet, and they had the little premade coffee flavored sponge cake I'm a sucker for. Basically yeah, it's your standard Chinese buffet. They do offer the full menu though, as well. I may write another review in the future after trying a more specialized entree. For very inexpensive buffet this was good and the restaurant is cozy and very clean, which goes a LONG way for me when eating buffet. read more

We most always get take out from this business. We order all vegetarian, and often make special requests, and they are always very accommodating. I especially like that they usually will go heavy on the vegetables when we ask them to :) Nice people, great food, reasonable price. read more
