The Egg Rolls were the best part of the meal for me. They were very busy for lunch so we had to wait for a table to be cleaned. The service was so so with only 2 people working the dining room but they were friendly. I think the business could use a good deep cleaning and possibly an interior face lift. This foodstuff does not have a proper taste or texture as servings from a public restaurant. Texture and color were both mysterious, and not in that "date in the dark" way, either. Hot/Sour soup was NEITHER. Mongoloid Beef was thin, dark mahogany colored with a runny soy sauce that was neither spicy nor Mongolian. The token shreds of green onion waste played a hideous joke upon the art of food preparation. I have a sad, sad feeling that if this place served a Bread of Life, it would be moldy. Mind you, my review is in comparison to all the other Chinese restaurants in town. If I had to make a criticism, it would be that the tea wasn't hot and the plumb sauce/hot mustard dispensers looked a little iffy. The restaurant was also unusually dark so if your eyesight isn't what it should be, you'll have a hard time reading the menu. I had to use the flashlight feature on my phone. While the waitstaff may seem a little curt in comparison to other restaurants, I've been on many business trips to China, so I'm used to how they relate to others. We ordered the egg rolls to start. They came out piping hot along with the egg drop soup. The egg rolls were delicious and not at all greasy. The egg drop soup was hot and freshly made. They rudely told me and my friend that we had to speak English or leave their restaurant. They ignored us and sat a white couple who had just came in first. When we were finally seated, they placed us in the back, next to the restroom. The waiter was very impatient with us. Ordered lunch Hunan Chicken plus an egg roll as well. The lunch comes with white rice, egg drop soup and hot tea - no substitutions and to go orders do not include tea or soup. I've been here a dozen times when I lived in Jefferson City. They are a to order rather than a buffet Chinese restaurant. They are consistently really good. The sesame chicken came with wonton strips in the bottom which was a great addition for a crunch with the dish. I met up with a friend in Jefferson City; and, he and his wife took me to Hunan Restaurant for dinner. We were greeted immediately; and, even though the place was quite busy, we were seated with very little wait. My guests knew we wanted the Dinner for 3 Combination, which comes with three entrees, Crab Rangoon, and Egg Roll and a cup of soup. I chose the Hunan Beef, my friend had Sweet and Sour Pork and his wife had the Broccoli Chicken. Everything was cooked to order; and, served hot, and tasty. Everything is served family style, so I got to try a bit of everything. The decor is just what you would want in a local, family-owned Chinese restaurant; and, they have an impressive bar. This is my favorite "foreign" type food in Jefferson City. I have been going there since high school and love the Mongolian beef and the sesame chicken. Ordered delivery to the hotel and it was prompt. The egg rolls were good although not very hot, and that is where the good vibe and taste went south. Best Chinese food in Missouri, hands down. Nothing tastes like it came from a freezer. Genuine authentic American-Chinese. Even their standard appetizers (egg rolls, crab rangoon, etc.) are better than anywhere else. Staff is always very nice and between them speak Chinese, Spanish, and English, all well. Food is always hot and tea/rice is served free beside meals. Since everything on the menu is hot, it makes a perfect winter dine-in. Hopefully everything is back to normal by winter and I can dine in without worrying. They're always prompt with answering the phone, too. The servers treat me like their own grandchild. read more

I hardly write any food reviews from my account so this should say something.**** Coming from a Chinese person, I had decent expectations about the food here and its authenticity. However, the Chinese owners here barely spoke any decent Chinese and that to me, is a red flag. The sad part is, I had asked for mapo tofu (Hot bean curd), a very popular dish in a usual Hunan restaurant, and it was completely butchered. The dish was not only tasteless but resembles little or nothing to any kind of mapo tofu I've had. It was not even "hot" or spicy and the tofu itself was old and hardened when I bit into it. Last but not least, this restaurant failed so hard on so many levels, I recommend you save your money (don't even get me started on the prices here, they were the same as other major cities about $10 per a simple entree). In terms of entrees, Hunan is only slightly above average. For example, the sweet and sour chicken is a little too sweet, but the chicken is always cooked to a delicate crisp; the cashew chicken is very flavorful, but has a sauce so nutty and rich that it reminds one of melted peanut butter (but maybe for some this would be a good thing). The appetizers, however, are what set Hunan apart from its capital-city competitors. Hunan's egg roll is the best in Jeff City by far. Upon serving, the egg roll looks pretty standard but after cutting, steam rushes forth from the fresh cabbage, soon eliciting a delightful crunch in your mouth. Sweet and sour sauce and hot mustard are made available with the egg roll but really both are unnecessary, as this jewel of an egg roll needs little polish. The crab rangoon is also a good choice, although not quite as top-shelf as the egg roll. There is a nice balance between the crunch of the crust and the soft, slightly tart cream-cheese/crab filling. Hunan is well worth a visit, and new visitors would do well not to let the restaurant's dim interior (almost dark) lighting scare them off, as the flavors that await truly are a treat. (As an aside, charging extra for fried rice with an entrée in place of white rice really irks me. Two dollars, really?) read more

They also have the best crab Rangoon hands down. After eating here I no longer like eating at the buffets because Hunan has better quality food. My brother worked at the Godfather's Pizza that was beside hunans for years. I never got tired of the chinese food he would bring home. The owner of the place was always very nice to my mother as she brought in a handful of little kids. I would learn from my Chinese wife that most of it is American Chinese, but it's all very good. Hunan is pretty good for the Midwest, but as a Los Angelino, I wasn't as impressed. The sweet and sour shrimp was only okay. Crab rangoons were unauthentic, but in my experience crab rangoons are often unauthentic. There was one shrimp dish that was good, with broccoli and snow peas, but the name escapes me now. Herein lies my story of adventure at ... HUNAN! I was visiting Jeff City and friends. They recommended Hunan as the best Chinese food in the city. My wife and children accompanied me on our foray to Hunan. We arrived at an ... interesting ... strip mall, but proceeded unconcerned into the dining establishment. We were promptly greeted by ... drapery. Passing through said drapery we found ourselves in what some would call mood lighting. Others may call it darkness; my "friend's" recommendation gave us courage to muddle through! We were taken to a round table. Mere moments later the piece de resistance arrived ... our waitress. "WHAT YOU WANT DRINK," she queried in a loud, belligerent voice teetering on angry. For a moment my senses left me and I was left with an eloquent reply of, "Uh." "I COME BACK," she barked. My children quizzically gazed upon her as she walked away. "What did she say dad?" "I believe she was asking for our drink order." Minutes later she returned with the same warm aura of tough love. "YOU READY?!" "Yes, I think we ..." "WHAT YOU WANT?!" My children, now better prepared, dutifully rattled off their drink order. My wife ordered her drink, but, in the preceding commotion, had forgotten the name of the drink I was ordering. I went back to my previous eloquance, "I ... uh ... will have ... uh ..." "I COME BACK!!" Darn it ... foiled again. She did come back, full of life. Her dulcet tones rang out, "WHO HAVE ORANGE JUICE?" Who did have orange juice? In the 6 milliseconds we were left to consider the question, she informed us, "I PUT DOWN!" Good to her word, she put it down and left us to figure it out. Also, in an effort to relieve us of the other questions we were not prepared to answer, she put down all of our other drinks in a close pile. Lovingly she remembered that I had not yet ordered a drink and made it known, "YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT?" Her eyes ground into my soul, searching for any vestige of intelligence. In all honesty, I had no idea what I wanted. I was trying to figure out which child ordered a Shirley Temple. I just blurted out the first drink that came to mind, "MAI TAI!" I may have said it too loud; perhaps I ordered with excessive joie de vivre. Regardless, I received a hint of disdain when she looked back at me with, what I compassionately refer to as ... the death stare. I now knew my purpose in life. My new best friend made to walk away; the game was afoot. "MA'AM!! MAAA'AM!!!!" I may have said it with a slight vibrato. She returned. "WHAT YOU WANT!" "Potstickers and dumplings por favor!" Finally, food arrived. This time there were no questions. The plates were gently and carefully dropped in the middle of the table. The potstickers and dumplings were good. They weren't overcooked or over-seasoned. The potstickers had just a hint of heat, but weren't so spicy that you were wishing you'd ordered milk. We ordered our dinner. My new friend went to leave before getting my order. You kidder you! I know you want to find out the deep desires of my tummy! I blurted out my order in a vibrato, joie de vivre voice that would have turned the head of an angel. MONGOLIAN BEEF! Somewhere Pavarotti burst into applause. Rice arrived immediately. Apparently, the custom is for rice to be delivered in enough time for it to cool to room temperature ... or less. Over the next 20 minutes, individual plates arrived with our favorite herald. "WHO HAVE SPICY PORK!?" She was wise to me though, she gave no quarter or time to reply. "I PUT DOWN!" Cleverly played. This had now become a game that even my children were aware of. She may have caught me unaware the first three times, but now I was wise. "WHO HAVE KUNG PAO CHICK ..." "YOU PUT DOWN!" Point ... me. My kids were slightly flustered at this point anyway. I was fairly certain they started to sweat as they saw her approach the table with food. Paralyzed with fear, they struggled to remember their order. Another plate arrived. "ORANGE CHICKEN!" There was no hint of question. It was an announcement, the plate placed firmly upon the table. Only one plate was missing ... mine. You minx. The food may have been good or horrible. To this day, only I remember anything about the actual food. I can only imagine that she hand selected the cow, butchered it, aged it, and prepared my meal all by herself. Clearly we had a deep connection. I knew this, because it took about half an hour for my plate to arrive. No matter, I knew how much time she had spent toiling away for my benefit. Finally, our special connection, my plate, arrived . Its name announced, "BEEF!" I took my first bite. I smiled. She had taken a few extra moments to make sure that I wouldn't burn my tongue. In all honesty, is there anything better than slightly warm Mongolian Beef? Not when its made with this much love. We were ready for desert. So was she. One of my favorite Chinese restaurants and the first time I had it was here. I have enjoyed this place for over 16 years. Their egg drop soup is the best in town. I love going to lunch here with my family. They have weird hours but it's for sure a place to stop if you're wanting some delicious food. The prices are about average and you get a good amount of food for the money. They have take-out also.
