My husband and I have had take out from here a few times. The food is ok, not great but ok. Well today, someone rude at the checkout decided there was a charge for hot sauce when there never had been before. Ok that's fine if you charge for it, but you hadn't before then you give to different prices on which you're saying it was. It got ugly due to a customer involvement that was not her concern. It's a Chinese Buffet, but honestly pretty good overall. Not all Chinese buffets are created equal. Some have mediocre food. Some are super expensive. I've been staying and working remotely in the area and have visited the buffet many times. The price has gone up by $1 around late Sep. While they do offer varieties of options - be it sushi, Chinese food and hibachi and steaks, one thing that never changes at this place is their offerings. Every time I came, the Chinese food items are always the same. It doesn't matter which day of the week you come, it's the same. Same with sushi and hibachi. I wish they would rotate the Chinese food offerings. For example let says they offer 30 dishes, make 15 permanent and the other 15 - rotate with different dishes every every few weeks or every month. It's boring to find the same food day in and day out. As for the service, it's hit or miss, if you get a younger waitress, service is lacking, however if you get waitresses that are bit older, they are superb checking in on you, making sure your water is refilled before you ask, etc. Here is what I had every time I visited - their catfish, perfectly fried, a lot better when the fresh batch comes out. Then I get green beans, hot and sour soup, beef only from beef and broccoli, fried squid and fried shrimp. I also get one plate of hibachi - with noodles, veggies and beef chunks. I used to get the steak and would ask for medium, but it's always done one way - well done, so I stop getting them. Overall, worth coming few times a year, not once a week thing :) I wish the other place would open up their buffet, because I want to see what the differences are, but they only do order from menu because of the pandemic. This place is incredible and my mouth is drooling just thinking about all the different types of food they have in the buffet. They have at least 10 different types of chicken and the seafood selection is great too. The shrimp was epic and trying new things like frog legs and squid was fun. The food is disgusting! Ate there at noon today, not sure when that food was cooked. There is a lot of food, but it doesn't taste fresh and you would think since they open at 11:00 the food would be fresh at 11:45. You serve yourself except for drink, refills offered. There is no ambiance! The guy taking money literally just held his hand out for you to pay him. The lunch was over priced at $12.99 for buffet. We've stopped in quite a few times and haven't really had anything negative happen. The selection of dishes is amazing. From the usual chicken on a stick to shrimp to soups to mongolian BBQ even sushi. And the sushi isn't bad, it's made quite fresh. The selection for the mongolian bbq is quite nice and, again, things are quite fresh. Maybe we're just lucky to go when it's busy enough that the food doesn't get turned. It's a busy enough place to keep the food rolling and you will find very few warming trays that aren't regularly refilled. The place is tidy enough, no real complaints there. The staff is generally quick to pick up plates and refill drinks. This was the first place that I tried during my 5 days here, it's now my 4th day and this place was the best restaurant for the price. A buffet worthy of 5 stars -- how can it be?? Well, I'll tell ya how!! The food was pretty standard buffet stuff, they had a hibachi station, which I didn't try; maybe next time. I was quite impressed by the selection and the freshness of the food. There was no crustiness on the top of the food -- in fact, they were constantly switching out the trays. All the food was hot, and there was plenty of it. I was most impressed with the sushi bar. There were plenty of selections for someone like me who doesn't love raw fish. I recommend the California Roll. They were quite good. There were several other rolls I tried, which were all excellent. I also felt there was a nice selection to choose from of all kinds of dishes. But, who am I kidding? It all hinhes on dessert. I mean, there was a decent selection of salads and other healthy crap, but I'm all about the desserts. The thing that stood out to me was the cups of custard. Chocolate grooviness that made me so happy! I forgot to grab a spoon, so I had to get creative. (Don't ask -- what happens at the buffet stays at the buffet!) Whodda thunk I could find a good Asian Buffet in Missouri, but I did!! Before I go, I wanted to give a special mention about the waitress who kept our glasses full and our plates cleared off the table. She was so very professional and hilarious. Still a very, very mediocre Chinese buffet. Their food just isn't the freshest. Idk if I'm just super picky but I've had some amazing Chinese buffet experiences. And this place doesn't cut it for me. HOWEVER, their hibachi does have me hooked. It's one of the better foods around this town. And that's the reason why I keep coming back hahaha. Just put all of the veggies you want with your rice or noodles, add minced garlic, the spicy sauce, and maybe some eggs, then hand it to the cook! The hibachi food is great, nice cooks. Safe to eat, but The buffet food is lukewarm especially at 11:00 maybe 100 degrees at most. So, it is not being heated to 165 degrees and placed in warming trays. You can not use warming trays to heat. Maybe by noon it is up to 140 holding temp, but Bacteria thrives between 40-140. This is your typical Asian Buffet with plenty of selections. Everything tasted fresh and it was hot. The Sushi was really go too.... in fact for the price, you cant beat all you can eat Sushi!!! Wanted to give this place 3 stars, but they do more right than other places I've been too. Ocean Buffet is the best Chinese buffet within the Fort Leonard radius hands down. They're not perfect, but they do much better than I have seen at other chinese buffets. Primarily, food quality is generally very good for buffet standards. The hibachi grill is always my first checkpoint during my feeding frenzy (Sadly the consistency of taste is not there. Certain chefs seem to have more experience). I highly recommend that they add more sauces at the hibachi grill for more variety. The kimchi soup was surpsrisingly addictive as well, and the desert was pretty decent. Even the ice cream had alot of flavor! (No toppings though) Customer service is solid, depending in who you get. The Korean lady is the nicest and hardest working we've seen there. Decor hasn't really changed over the past 3 years and the price is still pretty unmatchable (around $12 a person!) for the food you get. If someone awarded Ocean Buffet 5 stars I wouldn't vigorously debate them. It's far above average for Chinese buffets, as well as any buffet catering to a middle-of-the-road audience. What separates it from like restaurants is its size, freshness, and diversity. Located in a former Ryan's, Ocean Buffet takes up every bit of food space as that huge smorgasbord, providing tremendous variety in food items. Chinese selections dominated the food items but there were sufficient American favorites to provide other options. On a mid-week night at 7pm food trays were still being freshened. Deep fried selections were crisp and hot, cool items remained chilled, and maki rolls and sushi options didn't taste stale. The hibachi grill was still cooking customized entrees. That's not to say everything was perfect. Fried calamari was so chewy as to be inedible. Frog legs could be predictably described as tasting like fried chicken. Wasabi, while potent, was dry almost to cracking. However, overall, I believe most diners would feel they got a good value for taste and variety. Then there's the bonus of attentive service that quickly whisked away dirty dishes without removing the chopsticks, and refilling beverages before glasses were empty. For the price--about the same as Golden Corral and similar restaurants--Ocean Buffet clearly stands out. read more
