Both were cooked appropriately -- the katsu had a fried, crispy exterior with a moist, tender chicken on the inside. The pulled pork was moist and tender as well. The spam musubi was also good! I would recommend against the Kalbi ribs - they're not true kalbi ribs but rather the beef from the teriyaki beef with a kalbi sauce. Would come back again! read more

Based only on one visit but I was not all that impressed. Okay. I was impressed w the guava cake, super fruity. Aside from that I felt it was all average. The Mac salad did have peas and carrots but pretty plain. The katsu chicken was pretty disappointing. It was pounded thin and overcooked. The breading was probably thicker than the chicken itself. I would go back to try something else if katsu isn't their thing but I'd rather hit one of the other Hawaiian places a few miles away. read more

They brought their food truck to our wedding and everybody loved them! The event was way out of town, but everything was ready, fresh & delicious. They were super accommodating to our guests' special requests. They even had veggie bowls for the non-meat eaters. We're still getting great comments from our guests. Food was good. The katsu was a little over done but the portions were good and the flavor was good. The service made me feel like taking an order was a burden. The person receiving orders seemed like they rather be anywhere else. Cups were held against their clothing and grabbed by their hands right at the rim (no straws with the cup) . I really wanted to like this place. I've driven past frequently and never had the chance to stop in until tonight. I got the teriyaki beef, vegetables and Mac salad. My husband the kalua pig, teriyaki chicken, Mac salad and rice. Since they were out of guava cake we got an order of malasadas. My first bite of broccoli was straight garlic. It was barely parboiled-so next to raw-but had been swimming in the sauce from the beef and almost choked me. Nothing that I ordered should have any garlic in it which is why I was so startled. Sadly nothing got better from there. The Mac salad had also been swimming in the sauce and was like eating raw garlic. The beef was okay. Nothing to write home about. My husband was equally unimpressed with his meal. The kalua pig was dry and bland. His chicken wasn't garlicky-he actually said it was good! Something redeeming! His mac salad was just as garlicky as my whole meal was. His rice soaked up the pool of teriyaki sauce which he enjoyed. The malasadas tasted like they were fried in the same oil as the Katsu chicken. Luckily we have little kids so we didn't have to toss the whole large box of them--they'll eat anything coated in sugar. The kalua pig tasted like it pulled out from an imu (Hawaiian underground oven) and the teriyaki sauce was perfection on the moist and tender chicken. Broke da mouth!!!! While en route to downtown SLC on a recent visit, I stumbled onto Keni's spot after seeing the great Yelp reviews. I've lived off island for nearly four years now, so anytime I'm here I make sure to get my Polynesian fix. My first visit to the Hungry Hawaiian was so amazing, I returned again on my way to the airport! HH so much better than other Hawaiian spots I've tried on previous visits--not only is the food more authentic, but Keni is funny, friendly, and pono. He definitely made me feel like I was back in the islands. On Day One, I had the two-meat plate--teriyaki chicken and kalua pork with white rice and a very ono mac salad. Keni says this salad, which doesn't skimp on flavor with its extra pepper and chunky veggies (peas and carrots), is his dad's recipe. (His dad just happens to be first cousin to the legendary surfer Eddie Aikau to boot!) The chicken is perfectly cooked, the sauces are terrific, and the pork was salty and melt-in-your-mouth delish. On Day Two, I came back for the incredible malasadas, which are Portuguese donuts with the most amazing guava dipping sauce. Helpful hint: If you take these malasadas to work or a party (or to the kind folks at the rental car return or airport), you will be the talk of the town! I made so many peoples' day from the car-rental drop off to security with those addicting fried pillows of heaven. If you know Leonard's in Honolulu, I guarantee you these will NOT disappoint, especially on a cold drizzly day like today. In addition to the malasadas, it was also my lucky day...Keni had lau lau pork (traditional leaf-wrapped protein) AND poi! It doesn't get much more authentic than dis! The best part? When I finally got to the airport after dropping the rental car, I went through security with my plate lunch and totally forgot about the poi, which is a thick dipping "sauce" made from taro. Guess what? The poi was so thick that TSA didn't even question it! Ha! Keni's place is warm and inviting with bright colors and Hawaiian music playing in the background (he has created his own playlist on Spotify, so check it out). They've only been open a few months but already have a loyal following and they also cater (definitely recommend HH for your next celebration!). I'm going to keep referring to this place as the Happy Hawaiian because not only is Keni one of the nicest guys around, but also, this food makes you, your soul, and your belly SO HAPPY! My cousin's fiancé is Hawaiian and he's introduced us to the best food. Not only was the food amazing, the service was friendly. You can never go to a Hawaiian person's house without feeling like family even if you just met them. The owner of the truck was awesome. We got the teriyaki chicken plate and it was great. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the teriyaki sauce, not to sweet, not to salty. I personally love Mac salad, so that made my tummy happy too. I have only been to Hungry Hawaiian's once and it sure gave me such a great first impression! I was craving a spam musubi, and so I got just that, and wow! Just wow! It is some of the best musubi I've ever had!!! But it doesn't end there, the friendly Hawaiian atmosphere right when you enter the door is definitely there. You are greeted with an Aloha and taken care of right off the bat. Even though there was a line (during lunch period), they made sure to tell you how long the wait would be and greet you. We literally live down the street and can't wait to walk there during the summer time to try more of their food! All of it looks super yummy and at a great price point as well. Friendly place, I stopped in for lunch, the menu is very small, just three meats and a couple of ways to order them. Drinks come in a can or bottle, no free tap water or ice. I was wasting the woman's time at the front counter asking many questions, she was very kind and helpful. I ended up ordering the beef combo and sense I had so many questions about the different meats she gave me a small sample of each with my meal (see photo). My opinion; the beef is the bomb! Chicken good, pulled pork good. The macaroni salad is really good, flavored just right. Plenty of teriyaki sauce in squirt bottles to use. The rice was cooked perfect. I guess she noticed that having to pay for a bottle water kinda got my shorts in a bundle she kindly said this bottle was on the house, next time ill bring my own water. This review is for the FOOD TRUCK only. I have not been to their B&M location. Hungry Hawaiian offers what I would easily consider the best Hawaiian food in this state. I haven't been to a LOT of them and can only really compare with Mo bettahs and the like, but I'll be damned if Hungry Hawaiian isn't on a completely different level. The food didn't feel heavy or greasy. It tastes like high quality. It tastes fresh. That mac salad could wake the dead. Delicious.
