It's crispy, sweet, savory, and this one is the star of the show! Most importantly is the food is good! It's made to order so there is a bit of a wait but that's ok because it's worth it. We came an hour before closing and the guys were very friendly. Willing to answer our question and got to making our order immediately. Our mini special came with a drink but their ice machine is broken so no ice w/ our soda! The boys did say they only have ice at lunch time !! Wish they had said something about no ice situation! The restaurant could use a good cleaning both tables & floors - next time we'll do take out! It's really too bad more care isn't done to keep this place clean as their food has a ton of potential. Really the food is worth the wait - Mac salad was tasty and served cold - chicken teriyaki is really one of the best - chicken katsu was also freshly fried and served juicy and crispy ! The food itself was disappointing, too. I ordered the two-meat platter with teriyaki chicken and beef short ribs. It also included macaroni salad and white rice. To drink, I ordered their special fruit drink with watermelon and mango. Everything was just OK, with nothing outstanding or commendable about the meal, the restaurant, or the service. Great and Professional Employees. All the food was cooked well and temperatures were correct. Food was prepared and cooked to almost perfection. The presentation and taste were pretty damn good. The white rice was a little clumpy but it was good for a sticky rice dish. Very nice and not over done decorating in the restaurant, good music that was not too loud and the place was very clean especially the public restrooms. We would have liked a little more menu items such as some Asian noodles and something with curry. But a to big menu is not a great thing for a small business, and I can appreciate that. I would recommend that everyone give this place a try as well as a fair chance as there are not too many Hawaiian or Island restaurants out there. read more

Way better than Mo Bettas .. I did not know this business sold garlic shrimp. Came here 2 days ago because I was feenin for some chicken katsu and ended up getting a half plate of katsu half shrimp and it was DELISH!!! inside is pretty run down I hope they end up renovating the inside because it looks like its been thru some storms but other than the looks, the food is delicious. the service was great.. person at the register was really friendly, I came back again after picking up my HS boys because they smelt the food and wanted some lol. this place also has the best Mac salad by far, very seasoned and not too salty. portions are pretty good although my boys did order only rice no Mac salad in their katsu plates and they only got 2 scoops of rice. not sure why when an original plate with Mac salad already comes with 2 scoops of rice so my boys should've had 3 scoops of rice to replace the Mac salad... not a huge thing to gripe about but still my boys love rice and it would have been nice to have the extra scoop plus I am still paying full price for a missing item. overall, the place was not busy at all around 4pm which is surprising to me. needs to have more business!! will come again read more

Found this place on yelp while i was in Salt Lake City for work. Now the caveat is i only tried two things the Pupu Chicken plate and I he chicken skin appetizer. Ordered the infamous PuPu Chicken with Kalbi short ribs - in my opinion, is the best 2 meat plate combo they have! Both were so tasty. The PuPu chicken is probably the best (Hawaiian) deep-fried chicken I've ever had, while the kalbi ribs were soft, packed with flavor that makes you want more after every bite! My new favorite. I have been wanting to try Island Grinds because I follow them on Instagram and their food always looks so yummy. Well they did not disappoint. I ordered a double meat mixed plate with pupu chicken and beef kalbi, the flavors were 100% there. The mixed plate also came with large portions of rice and macaroni salad, I ate so much. I also tried the katsu chicken which was crispy on the outside and juicy tender on the inside, fried perfectly! They also have a $5 combo plate that is a smaller portion (still decent size) with a drink and chicken only option- such a great deal. If you have a Tongan appetite and cannot get to a Tongan food restaurant this is easily another great option. Large portions, comparably priced, and excellent customer service. We always order the pupu chicken. You can't order that anywhere else and even if it was available elsewhere, this pupu chicken is tough to beat! I love their kalbi ribs! Their food is rich with flavor! And for a snack we get their yummy musubi. Garlic shrimp is delicious as well. There are beautiful bright murals on the walls which really give the place an island vibe. They also play good music. The tables are clean but the texture to them is a little sticky which I don't love but it wouldn't keep me away from this place. Also drink selections are yummy we always get the pineapple soda. I used to go there 3-4 times a week. But now they cook a batch of chicken and let it sit until a customer orders it. So for three times in a raw I was given a cold teriyaki chicken.
