EXTRAORDINARY in every respect! Late January in Kauai is not noted for runs of any sought after species of fish. However; with Captain Matt and Co-Captain TJ, we boated 8 keepers. Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, MahiMahi, Aku. Caught fish belong to the boat, but Matt's generous nature prevailed and he filleted us dinner. The Captain and mate work extremely well together. A coveted skill set these days. Funny at times, all business when warranted. I'm a lifelong boater. I chose Hunt& Fish because they had a Hatteras & Bertram in their fleet. We fished on the Hatteras 35. It was a clean fishing battle wagon. Shimano Gold 150 reels and custom rods. New turbo diesels that made me a bit envious. Could not have been better. Although the seas were lumpy, we knew eventually we would find smoother water and we did. I will most definitely return! read more

Don't waste your time and money!! I totally understand Mother Nature and that you can never guarantee where wild animals (including fish) may be. However with knowledge and experience you can certainly increase your odds. Hunt Fish Kaua'i was a total disappointment. Our day started with the "captain" introducing himself for 5 min and then disappearing until we had to "settle up" at the end. Not surprising since he had to drive the boat, however when the 1st mate or deckhand (Noa) also disappears for the entirety of the trip and vapes and plays on his phone the entire time that is unacceptable. While we wasted $1,100 for our trip since we not only did not catch any fish, nor did we even get so much as a nibble....some visits from the crew, maybe a story or two or providing some level of interaction, fun and customer service would have take some of the sting out. The instructions form the company indicated that "water, juice and soda" would be provided and while 5 small micro sized water bottles were in an ice chest and did constitute water provided, that was it. Had we known we would have brought our own. When we shows up no one even asked our names verified our booking or anything. We could have been anyone. We basically drove around for 4 hours trolling at 9mph with the 6 lures bouncing on top of the water. Perhaps this is how you fish in Kauai....I don't know. I expected they knew what they were doing. I would have thought that we would find a spot and drop the lures into the water and then maybe move around slowly for a while? Maybe not, but either way what they did clearly didn't work. Interestingly the "captain" mentioned 4 times in the 5 min intro that the day before they caught 2 yellowfin and 1 marlin, but the two trips since then got nothing...so not to fry our hopes up. Yet, we went to the same spot where nothing was found the last two trips. Probably best NOT to share that with guests. I would preferred not to have known that as it just added more pain to the experience. I think many people here in Kauai just don't like people from the mainland. Many have been unfriendly and seem to want our money, but would be happier with us not here. This was definitely true with Hunt Fish Kauai. Don't waste your time with this charter. Waste of time, money and effort. read more

Hmmm ... I'm a first time hunter! And my companion is an avid hunting enthusiast. We both had a blast! From pick-up to arriving at Mike's shed, target practicing, and then traveling in his pick-up to a private area where feral pigs roam. Was fun to learn about Hawaii from Mike's experiences. We both appreciated what it all takes - which is quite a long-term commitment - to pull this off as an offering. In advance, I wanted to make sure that this was a fast kill and not cruel to the animal. While Hunt Fish Kauai does not guarantee that we are to be successful, we succeeded which meant Mike then had to skin the pig and vacuum seal it on-the-spot for our travel back to the mainland. (In our case, we called in advance to our hotel top chef who had a special freezer for us, probably it's where he places fishes caught by vacationers.) Mike assured us that he could keep it in his freezer until we were ready to pick-up it for our flight home. We were so happy about our experience, so thanks to the pig that gave us its life and also to Mike! read more

It's so nice to know that I can reflect on more than a handful of deep sea fishing expeditions, in a variety of locales (Bahamas, Baja Mexico, Australia) to pen an informed, somewhat experienced review for this company. I've caught some big fish, been skunked, and observed some janky/questionable business practices on the open water, and I can confidently report that Hunt Fish Kauai is a legit rig. Why? Well, for a little while, there, I thought we might get skunked. That's when they went to work and earned it. We were lucky that juvenile yellowfin were spending the winter off the coast of the island, and that's what we were hoping to catch, but during the first two or so hours, nothing was hitting, bottom or near the surface. With Austin navigating, Duke used a method I'd never witnessed before -- probably a local trick -- wrapping bait fish in fishing line and gently lowering it to the ocean floor where, time after time, he managed to set the hook. Near the end, we also picked up a nice catch when the fish were feeding on the top of the water, a pretty amazing experience to simply watch. Every one of us landed something, many caught a couple, and our 70+ year-old patriarch came up with the memorable ahi: a 60 pound beast that tasted incredible raw and off the grill that night. read more

Coming out during winter knowing that it wasn't peak season for fishing has turn out great for us. It was the experience that was worth it. We caught some fishes better then nothing. Taught us some salt water techniques and the types of fishing and good quality equipment's. 8 hours on the charter wasn't bad the day flew by fast. Crew was helpful and knowledgeable info. Of the few times I've gone on a charted fishing trip, Hunt Fish Kauai tops them all. Great refurbished boat, lots of space, top of the line equipment, and as clean as a fishing boat gets! Alapai captained the ship while TJ crewed, and these guys had their jobs down to an art form. Efficient only begins to cover their skill level. The most exciting part of our 6 hour trip was the endless energy of these two, from 5:30am until the bitter end. They were more than willing to answer ANY questions we had about the boat, fishing, and the island. Hunt Fish Kauai puts their customers first. They're all about making their guests comfortable - ask about the bean bag! - and are extremely generous with each trip's catch. We had the fish gods on our side; on our 6 hour charter, we caught an Ulua (within 20 minutes of leaving the harbor), Mahi Mahi, and Stripped Marlin. Alapai and TJ have a tight charter going on here. Me and the wife are regular socal anglers both local and san diego pulling yt, wsb, yft and bft when their out. Wife thought why not fish while we're on the island of kauai and who can say no to that...we booked 6hr trip with huntfishkauai right away based on good reviews. 5:30 sharp the boat and the crew were cocked and locked and ready to shoot out the harbor. The boat was clean, the head was clean which my wife appreciates and plenty of room for the three of us (college nephew). TJ and the deckhand went over the safety and the goodies. 1:40 in kodi lets us know that there are good piles of birds up ahead....few minutes pass to position the boat just right TJ says...anytime now...and BAM!!! The transom troll starts peeling line with the clicker on and FISH ON!! Nephew takes the pole and due to inexperience or ripped lip, the hook comes off 2 mins into the fight. Plenty of time and birds around us we chase em down again and 35mins later BAM!!! The shotgun troll goes off and this time its a hog...all the mono is peeled off and the fight ensues with the hollowbraid visible. Wife takes the pole and winds like its nobodys business...out of gas...she passes the pole on to the newphew who never fished in his life and he's quickly out of gas fighting whatever it is thats on the hook. I get the pole and about 25mins into the fight we bring in the deep color...its a 120#+ yft. During the entire time we were switching out, Alapai TJ and the 2 additional crews kept the boat in position, held the pole, switched out the harness while making sure everyone was safe and the fish stayed on the hook...the coordination of the crew and the entire operation is a cut above. We let the trolls out again and i joking asked kodi "lets get a wahoo next" he smiled and said lets do it. It must have been less than an hour before BAM!!! Again, the sweet sound of the clicker going off and the engine idling is still ringing in my ears... Nephew took the pole this time and he made a good fight of a 5' wahoo!!. Time really flies when you're having a good time and before we knew it, it was time to head in. On this day we targeted big game and thats exactly what we wanted. For those that are unfamiliar with this type of fishing as with any other type is that it's still fishing and there are no such things as guarantees. Private charters targeting big game are not for the light of heart...especially if you're on a tight budget but if the fish are out there and willing to bite i'm confident that Alapi and kodi and the crew will put you on the fish and make sure you land them. We had 2 boats competing against each other- the brides boat & the grooms! Oh IT WAS ON! We had instant bites on both boats- ours 2 and the other 4 at once. It was ridiculously fun and total adrenaline rush! We ended up with Skipjacks, a short-bill Spearfish and a 250lb MARLIN! We are still battling over which boat one- Of course my boat caught the Marlin- is there really any question??? Another bonus: we had the best fish of our lives for dinner!!! Not worth the price. Very expensive 6 hour boat ride. Didn't catch a single fish. Not even a nibble. I understand that is how fishing goes but this was ridiculous. Not a single boat was as far out as we were and the boats closer to shore were catching. The crew seemed more focused on catching the less common large fish in deep water than the smaller more plentiful fish near shore. In fact the deckhand stated "we're going out to this buoy. It has been dead lately but I'd like to check it out to see if I should come here tomorrow". You're kidding? Check out a buoy for tomorrow? We're paying you (a lot of money) to catch fish today. Give me a break. The crew was weak and didn't really interact with us much, they didn't seem too bothered by the fact that we didn't catch anything, and still charged full price. Not once did they ask us what we wanted to do. We were a private charter but they never asked us what we wanted to fish for. The deckhand was literally on his cell phone all day long. I mean all day. We tried asking him questions and he gave short 1 word answers. They did give us a piece of day old tuna to take home and eat. Nice gesture but not like catching yourself. Also the website will tell you that the water on this side of the island is much calmer and the wave heights are cut to a minimum. In my experience this couldn't be further from the truth. I've been in rough waters all over the pacific and let me tell you this was extreme. All in all a very disappointing trip, for as much as they advertise catching big fish it sure seemed like we would get at least a bite. Wouldn't recommend Hunt Fish Kauai at all. Probably the worst fishing experience I've ever had. Should have looked at all the review before I booked because it seems this kind of thing happens with them often. If you're looking for a deep sea adventure I would definitely recommend looking elsewhere. read more

They took us to multiple locations and we even got to see different types of whales that were around us. At the end of the trip, they gave us part of a tuna that was caught the day before. As the wife on board, I can say that TJ is a fabulous deck host and gentleman. Pi (Alapai) was our captain, also very nice. The cool thing about both men is that they get as hopped up about "fish on" as their fishing clients. It makes the experience that much better. He was very attentive and instructive to my husband-fisherman as well. He had a blast. We caught a nice mahi mahi, which we left for them so they could sell it, and in return, they gave a couple of nice fresh steaks from a previous catch. What an AWESOME outfitter! We were just recently on a vacation in Kauai and decided I wanted to go do some fishing. I showed up to the boat at 530am and Alapai & Kodi (Hunt/Fish Kauai) were fired up to get out on the water and catch some fish. One of the best parts was that the Hatteras was completely overhauled and looked like a brand new boat. The boat was set up with top of the line rods and reels. I have fished several places around the US and Mexico and I can say that these two guys worked harder than most to find the fish. We ended up with one nice ahi on the trip, but just talking with them was the most memorable. Having grown up on the island of Kauai they knew so much history about Kauai and I heard stories I am sure you will not get from any "tour group". Thanks a lot guys. Just got off a charter today with Alapai and Kodi. Had a blast even though weather conditions lately have been miserable! I originally was supposed to charter a couple days ago out of Nawiliwili harbor in Lihue. I drove ALL the way down from Princeville for an hour only to be turned away by the charter company due to heavy seas. I called several companies and no one was going out...except these guys! They gave us a great private charter and taught us a lot about the local fishing knowledge. It was pretty slow for the first few hours but caught a couple beautiful Mahi Mahi towards the end. They even made sure to go over our time limit so we caught fish. I come back to the island every year so I will definitley be giving them a call again.
