I studied and did all the homework. When I took my ACTs I used all the tips suggested by the tutor. When I received my scores back I didn't do better, in fact I did worse. On multiple occasions I heard the teachers in the older childrens' rooms raising their voices…read moreloudly at children who were simply touching things or asking questions (in other words, normal kid behavior that needed gentle guidance & redirection, not an emergency situation of any kind). I could hear this while standing outside the building during pick-up and I also heard it when inside the building in the halls. My child started as a very young infant and the 2 caregivers that worked with her most closely seemed annoyed that she was struggling to take a bottle, or cried, or wanted to be held, or struggled with the texture of some foods when she was later starting on solids. All normal parts of development, learning to eat, etc. Caregiver would make negative comments to my baby in front of me at drop off if the baby started to fuss when separating from me. The 3rd caregiver she had at the school did seem caring and attentive and started to do sensory activities daily. Prior to this, it seemed that there were no books read, songs sang, games played, sensory activities. Staff wanted babies to lay and play by themselves. When I entered the room on a few occasions, I saw most staff scrolling on their phones while sitting on the floor rocking babies in rockers or on their bodies, and with older babies crawling around and not being interacted with. My child seemed traumatized by the lack of nurturing caregiver with whom to bond on her first times away from her mom.

My daughter attended one day at this preschool, and while she did like it and seemed to be well cared for, my issue is with the complete lack of security and seeming protocols this school has. The doors to the building are not locked as there is no separate entrance for the school. During drop off EVERYTHING is wide open and there is no security about who is coming in and out at all. We dropped our daughter off and were loosely told to sign her in and out. We were not shown where to sign a name or anything, or shown anything at all. There was just a place for the time. I put the time and my husband and I left. My husband went alone to pick up our daughter, I have two other children, and he was able to pick her up without 1. Signing her out 2. Saying who he was. He basically walked in, the teacher told him what her day was like and he took her home, ON THE FIRST DAY! They didn't know who he was? What if we had a custody agreement and her father wasn't supposed to be picking her up? To say the least I was alarmed. I called Christine and explained my concerns to her and got response like "well it was the first day" and "well the teachers know the parents from orientation". Just a note, we were not at orientation because my daughter was very ill that day, so they didn't know us at all. By the end of the conversation I told her I thought there practices were out of date and that I'd like a refund. She said she's "never experienced anything like this before" and I would get a refund by the end of the month. I also received an email with individual pictures of every child in the class. Not group pictures, not pictures of just my child, but a mass email of individual pictures to all parents. When I brought this up to Christine she said "well they're not on social media." Well they might as well be because I do not know any of those parents in the class and I did not remember signing a waiver, and even if I did, are you just too lazy to send the three pictures of each child to each parent? To say the least I am appalled at the lack of security in protecting my child and then the unapologetic reactions to my concerns. Times have changed and protocols should be updated.

They always received one on one attention and with smaller class sizes excelled greatly and made life long friends. The staff is amazing and it truly felt like an extended family. My twins are just finishing their 1st grade year of school and they are off the charts academically but even more importantly teacher's have expressed that they are role models for their fellow class mates and I can definitely attribute much of that to their wonderful beginnings at Busy Bear!

We joined the Sylvan family just before Christmas of 2021. And we're so grateful we did. They say…read moreit takes a village to raise a child...just make sure Mr. Rick Hernandez and his brilliant daughter Nadia, owners of Sylvan Learning of Edison, are a part of that village. Allow me to preface this review by saying that I'm a proud, former math and science student. Playing with numbers are a comfort zone for me. With that being said, being a math geek does not assure progeny with the same acumen. Nor does it guarantee an ability to translate and transfer those math skills to a struggling teen. We're not all naturally born teachers, despite earnest parental attempts. And as a result, my hard-working child suffered from my shortcomings, coupled with the troubled virtual learning experience of the pandemic lockdown. Beloved son was always an A student in his elementary school years, including in Math. But he worked very hard to achieve this. Math was never his forte. His Honors Geometry class in his freshman year of high school only served to highlight his ongoing struggles. By the second marking period, we knew we needed to escalate and find additional resources. After an unsuccessful experience with another learning center, we found the relatively new Sylvan Learning Center of Edison, conveniently located right on Route 1, next to the very familiar Chuck E Cheese. Responding within a few hours, a very pleasant Mr. Rick invited us to come to the center and take an assessment. It was immediately obvious, Sylvan is not like your typical learning center. The center is pristine...brightly lit...with multiple tables reserved for each tutor and his/her one or two dedicated students. There is coffee provided in the front lobby for parents choosing to wait. There is a fun and decorative prize section for the children to choose earned rewards from their sessions. (Older kids can earn gift cards if they'd rather forego little toys!) They even provide drinks and snacks for the children, so that hunger is never an issue. It is a place where children can be comfortable and their learning experience properly nurtured. And unlike other learning centers, there are no generic group sessions comprised of rote math exercises force feeding memorized equations. Rather, Sylvan provides personalized one-on-one instruction with resources hailing from the most applicable backgrounds. (Case in point, Mr. Rick strove to find top tutors from some of the area's best universities to provide instruction. He knew that the knowledge these instructors would have would be the most relevant and current with the latest teaching strategies.) I knew that there were gaps in my son's math education. The Sylvan assessment immediately identified each and every gap of my son's math foundations as early as from his third grade skills up to the most current. Once the assessment data was compiled, Rick could now legitimately design a learning plan for my son, with most importantly, required milestones and an actual end date. (This was a must for us. Unlike with other learning centers, I had no interest in an undefined relationship with ambiguous goals. ) To be fair, Sylvan was not the cheapest option. The other center was almost half the price. But the difference in learning experience was striking. And working with Sylvan is still much more economical than hiring a single private tutor outside. It was the perfect compromise where we were concerned. However, while a learning plan was set, there was still the concern of flexibility. Mr. Rick assured me that they could always work around our ever-changing commitments. And he did. Again and again and again. As long as I could endeavor to give at least a day's notice, he would handle the re-scheduling of his incredible staff so my son could work with the same group of tutors. Along with the instruction, a few minutes per session could also be used for homework help, if needed. But this would not be a focus. Recall, each student has a learning plan in place. To supplement the learning, Sylvan also provides access to its learning website...where students could access homework assistance from home. While we didn't always take advantage of this offering, it was good to know that such a resource was available when not in session. Finally, after a pleasant six months at Sylvan, during an equally difficult time in high school, beloved son is finally confident that he's completely "caught up" in math. He was able to comfortably pass in his class when in reality, Honors Geometry became progressively harder each day. I don't really know what we would have done had we not found Sylvan. If you're looking for additional instruction for your child, whether it be in math, English or even in preparation for standardized exams, including the SAT/ACT, give Rick Hernandez a call. She gets physical with children, resorting to grabbing them, shoving them into their seats if they are even the slightest amount of hyper. The owner is incredibly unprofessional and unqualified to work with children. Educators--and anybody working in the vicinity of children--need to know how to handle all types of behavior. Instead, this Kumon only prioritizes and respects children who are "well-behaved " in their eyes--when in reality, these "well-behaved" children are truly just petrified that the owner will scream in their face and berate them in front of other students. I have witnessed a particular student with clear anxiety berated immediately upon entry. The child would enter clearly nervous and afraid for their lesson, and the owner would rush to them, threatening them, seating them alone in a corner, overall just making the situation for the child worse. Mind you, this child was five years old with confirmed mental disability. The owner has also claimed on multiple occasions that special needs programs are not necessary. On multiple occasions, parents have come to her, asking for her input on placing their child in a special school/special program; she would immediately shut down their idea and say that it "doesn't help" and their disabilities "aren't real". Several workers were not paid their correct salary nor would they get paid on time. Multiple workers reported getting paid every 2-3 months rather than the promised monthly payday. The owner would also pay them $100-$120 less than what they worked for. On the topic, workers were verbally harassed and abused. The owner had no shame in screaming at her employees, especially during training period, where they are bound to make mistakes. Overall, this Kumon is horribly managed. If you have half a brain, do not send your child here.

My child started at M&E and had a wonderful experience there, until the director left, all the teachers followed her out the door. Things went down hill fast and the change was noticeable. Shortly into the new ownership, I came in to bring my child something and as I walked down the hall I heard someone screaming. An adult, not a child, yelling like a maniac. As I passed the class where the screaming came from, I saw a teacher in a child face. The owner was behind me and saw what I observed and said into the class 'You better listen!' Red flag. About a week later, we got a text that some children had gotten sick in the school. Within the next hour, I received 4 more messages that more than 10 children were throwing up and that we had to pick up our children. When I arrived, the owner was cleaning up the school with windex, bags of garbage were all over the school and it was a mess. I'm truly surprised that the board of health wasn't alerted Update: In response to the new owners reply, I'm not trying to hurt anyone. Just protect the children. I'm glad some of the old teachers are back. Our experience was negative and I do believe you were the one I dealt with when we withdrew our child.

Our twins have been attending for 18 months now and the overall development they've shown with English, math, Spanish, music and dance is phenomenal. Well balanced learning with physical activities. I love to hear them sing Spanish songs or teach us Colors and numbers in Spanish too. The recitals, movie nights, and themes are amazing fun too.
